I've missed blogging, but I wanted to be able to ramble about things other than movies (and still movies too!) so I have relocated, so to speak, to...

I'm not retiring from blogging for forever because I like it too much, so if you want to read more of whatever shenanigans I'm getting into, head over there!

Thanks for following Cinema Splendor and supporting my little corner of the internet :)
Some people think I'm a major creep because it seems to be that his only role is as Norman Bates in Psycho. Obviously that's his most popular movie, but he also had a really impressive filmography playing NON-serial killer roles. Sometimes.

I watched Evening Primrose on netflix the other night. It was late and I was getting schleepy but I still wanted to watch something before I drifted off, so naturally I went to Tony's filmography page and this looked cute. It was also 50 minutes too, so that was a huge plus.

The opening song...weird, but Tony <3

It was pretty weird.

Tony plays a poet who decides to give up real life and live in a department store. Full time. Never see the sun again. Yep. INSTEAD, he meets a whole group of (elderly) people who have been doing the exact same thing for decades. I can't even imagine. Just the mere thought of spending the rest of my life in a store made me feel claustrophobic. Anyway, these people pretend to be mannequins in order to avoid security. (?!) They've somewhat kidnapped a now 19 year old girl when she was six and fell asleep in Ladies Hats, and she hasn't seen the sky in years. Of course, because of movie magic, she is beautiful and captivating and of course Tony falls for her. Of course.

And apparently, if you try to leave, the "Dark Men" will come and GIT CHA and take you away or kill you or something - I still don't really understand the Dark Men thing. It just adds to the overall wackiness of the whole thing.

Basically, this entire thing is a musical episode of The Twilight Zone. So bizarre, yet cute, but still really strange. PLUS, it's composed by Steven Sondheim. Insane. I totally recommend it if you've got an hour to kill and like odd entertainment. If you are a die hard Evening Primrose fan, I'd check this post out about the DVD and all the goods that come with it.

EDIT: Oh my gracious goodness I just realized the kidnapped girl is played by Charmian Carr aka Liesl from The Sound of Music. Craziness.

a single man, 2009

An older man named George loses Jim, his partner of sixteen years in a car accident, and has tried to adjust to being "a single man" ... but he feels he cannot go on without Jim. He cleans out his office, lays out all of his insurance papers and important documents neatly on his desk, and plans to kill himself.

I had been looking forward to seeing Tom Ford's directorial debut - everyone said that it was such a pretty-to-look-at film along with an AMAZING storyline and I was so not disappointed. Fashion designers need to do movies more often. I feel like they have a keener eye for detail than most, which is probably why me, being a detail oriented person, absolutely adored this film.

When everything goes wrong in George's life, the colors are pretty desaturated and bland. When something goes right however, everything becomes warmer and nicer looking. At first I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me, until one point where it was blatantly obvious what was going on.

Also, Nicholas Hoult from Skins (drool, I love him to death). I've noticed that British actors speaking with an American accent sound more mid-atlantic than anything. It's strange because I don't think that's how Americans/Californians in this case speak. Matthew Goode, who played Jim, is also British and even though his voice is the equivalent to caramel being drizzled onto expensive European candy, he still sounded mid-atlantic. That was a voice rant and I don't even know why I typed that, but I feel it's IMPORTANT INFORMATION that I needed to share with you all. I'm weird.

People say Skins is my guilty pleasure, but I don't think pleasure should be guilty.

There's a ton of close ups of body parts and faces, mainly eyes. These closeups made me feel like I knew these characters more intimately, like they were actual people instead of just characters in a movie. Especially eyes, probably the most vulnerable part of the face, made more appearances than anything.

Let's just take a minute here to look at Julianne Moore and see what a babe she is.
Happy 17th birthday to one of my dearest blogging friends, Millie! I remember back when you were thirteen and we horsed around on the TCM message boards, where I pretended to know what I was talking about (I totally didn't and said things like, "Yes!", "I agree", and "Oh my gosh, lol!" a lot). I'm glad I met another person my age so I wasn't the token teen on the boards, and now look where we are :') I had a blast being 17, so I hope you'll have as much fun as I did!

Also, nothing can beat your birthday video last year, so here's hoping that Steve sort of measures up. ;D

oh geez, new movies (+ a posh outfit)

HEY, here's a newfangled idea! Before you go see Just Go With It starring Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston, how about you first acquaint yourself with it's original, Cactus Flower? Or how about you see Single White Female instead of The Roommate? As soon as I saw the trailer for the former, I immediately knew within the first 10 seconds that it was going to be a remake of one of my favorites. :(

I plan on not seeing it, but I have legitimate reasons.

not a huge Sandler fan. Don't care for Aniston much either.

I feel like the newer version is going to dirtify (guess who just made that up) a sweet, respectful original in order to pass the 2011 viewer seal of approval. I love a tasteful dirty joke every now and then - further evidence that I actually am a 12 year old boy instead of an almost 18 year old girl - but I extremely dislike how almost everything that plays in theaters now has to have a high level of risqué in it in order to succeed at the box office. I understand if it's purposeful (Black Swan - but even then I thought that the scene in question wasn't crucial to the plot and I deemed it a little unnecessary). I just don't think that a film should depend on it's crudeness to make money and gain viewers.

The Roommate is a little irrelevant, because I haven't seen either that or Single White Female, but SAME IDEA, WHATEVER IT'S MY BLOG.

Serious Sarah is serious.

My parents call me Lucy all the time when I do eyebrows like this.

And today is also Posh Frock Friday, yipee, so here's my...school outfit. To see the other participants and submit your own, click here.

The Penelope hat spurred this whole post and series.

Who doesn't love playing virtual (paper) dolls? I'm kicking off this thing with a bang - and two outfits.
Hi.
Posh Frock Friday occurs on the last Friday of every month and it's an opportunity to dress up for no reason, watch a movie, have some cake, and basically have a date night - by yourself.

I'm going to a not-fancy party this evening, so I'll probably just dress up my jeans a little bit but here's one of my favorite dresses ever and me looking like a goon.

I've never really been one for scary movies, but ever since I watched Paranormal Activity last week, I cannot stop watching them. I was so against watching it, but I figured I'd have a good time with a bunch of my girlfriends who get equally freaked as I do.

I LOVED IT.

It was very Blair Witch-esque (oh I also watched that a few weeks ago too) by the handheld, doc style filming. The actors were also very believable as a young couple dealing with DEMONS. Like Blair Witch, they were given the basic plot of the scene they'd be shooting, then while they were improv-ing lines the crew would add the "effects" and sometimes they didn't know it would even happen. Everything was shot in director Oren Peli's actual home...I mean I would never want to live there again afterwards but whatever. The whole film felt very real which made it scary because it was as if any of it could easily happen to you. Although I would recommend the alternate ending instead; the original was a little too unrealistic and not as scary basically while the alternate was just freakin creepy.

Then the next night I needed a thrill fix, so it was The Exorcist on netflix instant. WHICH WAS SCARY. Ughuhuhuh during the ending I was sitting there with my hands on my face like 'what the heck is going on' and then he jumped OUT THE WINDOW UGH WHAT? So confused for a while after it ended but now I get it. Definitely freaky and weird. A++ for Linda Blair.

So now I've looked up and added a few more movies to my netflix queue; I kind of like being spooked :)

Summer Movie Blogathon: What I watched as a kid

When I finally figured out how to work the VCR at the age of 4, it was the summer of 1997. There I sat in the basement outfitted in a Tweety bird bathing suit, sitting in a laundry basket in the dark, watching Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer over and over and over.

...Yep.

That's basically where my movie viewing started. The earliest movie I remember going to see was Flubber, with Robin Williams. My dad took to to Flix and we were the only ones in the theater. I don't remember anything but a few blotchy moments of the movie, but my dad tells me I was freaking out the whole time because I was being paranoid (well there's something that hasn't changed!).

I was also a Disney Princess number one fan. Cinderella, Pocahontas, Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, I watched (and still own) them all. Anastasia was my absolute favorite, and I finally dusted off my VHS about 2 weeks ago and I STILL love it. It's like Doctor Zhivago for beginners. My aunt took me to see Anastasia on Ice, ARE YOU JEALOUS, ARE YOU? :)

I was scared of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, the Oompa Loompas, Ursula from The Little Mermaid, and pretty much every Disney villian out there. Cruella De Vil still freaks me out. I also used to think that I was indeed Harriet the Spy, and wore my yellow rain coat while carrying around my marble notebook taking "spy notes"; I was really just creeping around the living room and kitchen, stalking my own parents.

Aaaand then I watched Bye Bye Birdie and all hell broke loose from a one woman show by yours truly, but that's a different story.

Happy Birthday Nicola!!

Horse drawn carriage, Catherine Deneuve wearing an awesome red coat... oooooooooohohohohoho how wrong was I. I'm not saying that Belle de Jour was bad, because it wasn't at all, it was just definitely NOT what I was expecting. I had to do a little research after viewing it just to be sure exactly what had just happened. Which I still don't. Guess I'll be rewatching this again sometime in my life. I'm making this sound so bad, but it's totally not!! I don't know why I'm reviewing it weirdly; UGH sorry teenager moment, whee I love being indecisive Mainly, I couldn't take my eyes off of Catherine Deneuve tra la la she's my girlcrush. Not to mention she had the sweetest hair/outfits/makeup that I kept drooling over because it was perfection. Except I'm not a huge fan of these glasses because they look like corrective cataract sunglasses for old people. And if anyone could tell me how to do that AMAZING hair up-swoop thing that would be greatly appreciated.

So basically, Severine (sounds much better with en accent francais) (I don't even think that was correct French) is a bored wife who is rather chilly and I don't mean like "oh let me go get a sweater the AC is too high" I mean she's a robot. NOT LITERALLY. Although that would have made a really epic movie about a robot prostitute.... OK I'M GETTING CARRIED AWAY So she's bored and wants to make some extra FRANCS if you will, so she decides to go into "the business" and be a daytime hooker. She meets some pretty actually no, extremely bizarre men with extremely bizarre fetishes, it is the weirdest thing EVER. I'm just going to let you draw your own conclusions by this next cap. Hint: she's not dead. And note the creeper camera behind him. Then, which was probably the biggest letdown for me in the entire movie, I thought Ian McShane aka my "hhhhhhhhh oh my goodness hello you handsome lad" person showed up. From the back I SWORE it was him but then it wasn't. Whatever, he's still sort of cute, I thought. Ummmmmmmm 5 minutes later he has a switchblade in his cane, creepy gold teeth, and an obsession for Severine. CREEPER. ALERT. He's in the back. Then he shows up at her house after she quit her day job (heh heh) and is like "Severine, je t'aime, mon amour, oh la la" and she's like DUDE GET OUT OF MY HOUSE and it's pretty much a party from there except not really because guns are involved and stuff goes down. But I'll let you watch that :)

Breathless, or "meow, JP Belmondo"

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 205px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_dKGUmDwMwb8/TFJbydS6LnI/AAAAAAAAAuE/ugg-1OC4yJE/s400/BR.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5499559017388322418" />I had every intent of "liveblogging" this movie, but then I always get distracted and actually stop paying attention. I took bulleted notes on the first 15 minutes and then got extremely distracted, so I'm going to share some bullets and then talk about them; and I don't know why I felt the need to share that with all of you, ok.

First thing on page:

meow, JP Belmondo
Now, Jean-Paul Belmondo is just hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh very attractive. I mean come on...
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 226px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_dKGUmDwMwb8/TFJWrrhbkrI/AAAAAAAAAt8/ZZfOmL8g_Ew/s400/295739815_1a99b68bcb_b.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5499553403390104242" />(PS: on my quest for pictures of him I found a blog called European Film Star Postcards! very cool)

SPOILERS

JP, dude why did you shoot him?
Michel (JP) has a penchant for randomly killing people, like right in the beginning he just gets out of the car and WHOOPSY pops this dude off. Then later he tells Patricia (Jean Seberg) he'll be right back, goes to the bathroom, another guy comes in, starts washing his hands....Michel knocks him out, drags him into a closet and leaves. No big.
END SPOILERS :)

Newspapers don't crinkle like they used to
Ok, this was just an observation, but has anyone else noticed that newspapers in movies aren't that flimsy weird stuff we now have? THEY ACTUALLY CRINKLE, ugh I've always wanted crinkly newspapers.

I think France may be more beautiful in black and white
Yep.

Jean is so American, but cool shirt
I've always thought Jean Seberg was French, I think it may be that her whole "look" is very European. But when she started speaking (in French) I was like "Oh, um, she's American?" While JP would be calling it "le Clareege" she'd be like "le Claridge" ADFJASDLKFJ that makes me crazy I don't even know.
And yes, I know that this is "the first time a woman wore a tshirt in film la de da de da" so I thought I should take note on that. Also, I kind of want it now.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 225px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_dKGUmDwMwb8/TFJcvUGiuAI/AAAAAAAAAuM/5gFTPMXqvLI/s400/08-ausser-atem-blu-ray-brd-kinowelt-045-41-frame15.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5499560062892554242" />

JP lip rub tally = 7
Jean lip rub tally = 1
Apparently this whole thing was a salute to Bogie, but that's just what I read on Wikipedia because I haven't seen like any Bogey (besides Sabrina) ever. SUE ME. But I definitely noticed this little *suave* caress thing which just made me hhhhhhhhhhh more.

Overall I definitely liked Breathless, I'm just not sure I loved it. I might have to watch it again but hmm. Now that I'm totally obsessed with French new wave movies, I think Belle Du Jour is getting the Splendor treatment next!

Breathless elsewhere: Raquelle's post!

This is a random post

This gif properly describes me since school ended.

For my shelf project I'm calling myself exempt from some movies I own, because I got them as gifts/or whatever and I actually hate them.
This includes Twilight. Although it actually may be fun to write that one...

I've lost interest in everything this summer other than sleeping, Doctor Who, Skins, and painting rocks. I have had a small stack of movies on top of my tv literally for 4 months, and they need to be returned to their mommies (Casey, Millie, and Kate, respectively) because they are not getting any attention while Doctor Who is on the screen below them.

Oh, and check out this blogathon that I'm participating in in the sidebar over there! ->

Oh and I just realized that I'm number four in the Classics category on Bloglovin'

heeeeeey, all you 2 followers

I also have a proposition for the other 97 of you. Would you just completely and absolutely die if I turned this blog into a personal/Scathingly Brilliant-esque blog?
I feel like I would update you a lot more with dumb randomness in my life, AND THEN still keep talking about movies. I need your input!

OH THE HORROR

Being a huge Natalie Wood fan (TCM's star of the month oh my god the yay's), I feel I have a right to make fun of West Side Story. Don't get me wrong, I think its one of the greatest movies ever made, but it's soooo over the top sometimes that I just have to chortle to myself.

As much I love Richard Beymer, and as much as Millie hates him, at certain points in the movie I'm like, "Stop smiling with your perfect little Colgate smile and STOP KILLING PEOPLE." His group, the Jets, are equally redonk. I mean...they are supposed to be a tough New York gang, and they just wear brightly colored tight pants and prance about. "Maria" is one of my favorite songs off the soundtrack, but the scene that contains it is a little snoozeworthy. He's just strolling through some greenscreened "streets" and then WAH-LA the sky turns pink! WOW!

From Tom & Lorenzo; read this post on WSS, you will die.

Anybodys is like the little Jet wannabe, who happens to be a girl with ill-fitting clothes and a botched Mia Farrow haircut. I pity her. Her fake but mighty powerful New York accent makes me giggle.

Graziella. Oh Graziella. She's Riff's number one gal. Then he dies. So she needs to milk her three lines for everything they're worth and sob to the heavens, "RII-HE-HE-FFFFFF" and bury her face in her pal Velma's arms. Then she proceeds to dance it out in a scene that MJ ripped off a few years later.

When Chino tells Maria that "He keeled your brrrother!" the music climbs into some crashing violins as he swoops away leaving the door swinging behind him. I laugh every single time. The line itself is already dramatic, but then it was like someone said "No. Something is missing. CALL LEONARD BERNSTEIN, WE NEED DRAMATIZED STRING QUARTETS"

Then Maria is in disbelief. She runs down the stairs, skirts blooming, and someone offscreen says "Bernardo muerto?" Maria clutches her head and screams. That minute long cinematic adventure is probably one of my favorites ever just because it is SO ridiculous.

I do love George Chakiris in this, though. He can stay.

PS: Thank God for Marni Nixon. This film would have tanked if she didn't step in not only for Natalie, but for Rita Moreno in a few songs.

PPS: I hope you liked my random bolded names.

*barges in*

Hiiiiiiii!!!!

I've decided to actually blog now.

gasp

I know.

It's been a while :)
(Before I start this post, I must thank whoever the genius is who made these screencaps, because they are just utterly incredible. And some of them move!! Many thanks to the person behind this blog!)

I watched Wonderwall the other night for the sole purpose of listening to George Harrion's soundtrack for it. I had no idea what it was about, or just how psychedelic it is, I JUST WANTED GEORGE. He's my favorite Beatle.

There is extremely little dialogue in this film, but the visuals and insane soundtrack make up for whatever's missing.
This is my favorite track from the movie; the whole movie is mainly sitar with a heavy Indian influence, and then BAM this one comes out of nowhere. I'm in the process of trying to make it my ringtone...but that's beside the point..maybe.

This quick clip also gives you a 30 second "summary", if you could call it that, of the movie. Very trippy.

The bottom line is, there's this Einsteiny looking professor who is just dying to know what is going on in the apartment next door. He turns into a bit of a peeping Tom to see what sorts of shenanigans Jane Birkin and Co. can get themselves into. The wacky dream sequences, Einstein's maid that reminded me of my grandma, and Jane Birkin just generally looking awesome was what made me love this. And I like the really weird movies. I watch them so you don't have to. BUT I REALLY WANT YOU TO WATCH THIS ONE! :D

Rules (that I was born to break)
1. Copy the logo and place it on your blog. Like Kate, I skipped this too...
2. Link to the person who nominated you for this award.
3. Name 7 things about yourself that people might find interesting.
4. Nominate 7 other bloggers, and post links to the 7 blogs you nominate.
5. Leave a comment on each of the blogs letting them know they have been nominated. Or a twitter alert!

Welp, I WAS going to post my random facts, but then Blogger had to go alter my plans and create sub-pages on me. (Psh, oh you Blogger, you!) So instead, if you click ^up there^ on "An all-around loon" that is where my random facts will be, plus they'll stay there forever in case you want to be stalker-y and look back! :D

I hereby bestow this very generous award back to Kate & Caitlin! :D

PLUS, Harley, Millie, Merriam, Casey, and Nicola!

It's pretty hard to believe that JD Salinger is gone. The man changed my whole outlook on life in one 192 page novel. He made Holden jump out of the page and into your brain, walk around, poke and prod, and make you think. I recently bought Nine Stories and absolutely cannot wait to read them. The way he writes is unique and I've never encountered anything like it.

Lately I've been watching movies and forgetting about them the next day when I wanted to write a post about it, so I came up with a little Hello Kitty notebook (don't judge me) and will write notes when I watch something! :D

Charly was my first Cliff Robertson movie. I liked his "after" Charly, but I don't think he was able to tackle the difficult role of "before" Charly. {I know that's super vague, but I don't know how I could describe it any other way!}

It was based on the novel Flowers for Algernon, which I read in ninth grade. The teachers thought that Charly wasn't the best movie to describe the book (?) so we watched Awakenings (which has the same basic plotline) instead. Now that I've seen both, I think Awakenings is better in terms of showing it in schools because it keeps a bit more high schooler friendly, but I really enjoyed Charly as well.

The credits start. "Music by Ravi Shankar."
OKAY WAIT WHAT
That was a glorious moment. I wrote "A+ Ravi" in my notebook. The music was good, but I don't feel that it went along with the movie as seamlessly as I'd expected. Also, with Ravi doing the music, of course it calls for one kind of trippy scene that doesn't really fit in the movie. One minute, Charly's a biker on a Harley, then he's somewhat of a pop icon that looks like Davy Jones? I was pretty lost. Oh, and this is all while there's a sitar going in the background.

As for the cinematography, I'm such a sucker for split screens, I was so happy to see them. (dork alert)
I also really liked how his and Ms Kinnean's voices were dubbed over several different shots, it was as if they were gracefully laid over the scenes.
