Everything is right on track for A NIGHT FOR DYING TIGERS. The post production process is in full swing, looking for music to replace the temp music I’ve put in the first edit. Temp music is such a tough thing to deal with…it’s very easy to fall in love with temp music you know you’ll never be able to use (mainly because it’s from other films!). Still, if we get something that’s very close to the temp score, I’ll be very happy. Then, it’s time to consider the other elements of the mix, and then the colour grading. A little bit left to do…and then there’s the issue of the poster! With an ensemble film like this one, it’s tough to find a beautiful image that can support the seven beautiful leads in this film. But we’ll figure it out.

Sidney, Lynne, Kristine, Sue, Katie, Cam, Lindsay, and everybody have been amazing.

What a team.

Making the move from Micro to ultra Low budget independent filmmaking is interesting.

I’ve long considered the question: Because I don’t write commercial films or write in a commercial genre, and because I enjoy long takes and working in master shots (mainly), how can I make a film that’s (artistically) something I’d like to see AND put a few people into the seats?

I believe I’ve found the answer, and it’s simple. CAST.

Cast interesting professional actors who excel with this type of material, keep them in focus, and get a great sound mixer.

So…that’s what’s happening.

I should be able to post a cast list fairly soon, however, these things take time with the agents/managers/lawyers.

We start shooting January 11th.

LOCATIONS

We’re still searching for the ideal Family Home. Something Modernist or Victorian or Cottage Style or Arts & Crafts or any large family home with Character.

A NIGHT FOR DYING TIGERS

Casting continues as we move closer to our first day of Principal Photography, January 4th. The audition process has been particularly tough, and (as I believe I mentioned in an earlier post) I’m definitely a fan of the “offer.” Just offer the role to actors whose work you’re familiar with. The only issue here is the waiting. However, we have a few really great actors seriously considering the film, and that would make my job as the Director so much easier. Altman said 90% of Directing was casting, and he was absolutely right. The other 10% is fighting all the compromises people push you to make every single day. People want to leave some kind of “mark” when they’re funding or supporting your work, and this can be a challenge if their input runs counter to your clear and persistent vision (of course, this is assuming you have a clear and persistent vision).

So far we have some great cast secured (will announce as soon as contracts are signed) and some great crew as well. We are still looking for a few key roles, but hopefully we’ll have those settled very soon. Locations are another issue…

LOCATIONS

We need the following: A large family house (4 bedrooms or more) – something older with character – for 12 shooting days, A Hospital (waiting room and one “hospital bed” room, A Bar (old school, wood, Pub), A Movie Theatre, Various Apartments/Houses, A modern hotel room.

I’ll be shooting the film on the RED ONE camera. I was hoping the Scarlet would be available by now, but it looks like a while before that particular camera is born. Shooting format is a tough call, so many options. We could have shot on film, but I really like to see exactly what’s being recorded while it’s being recorded. Then there are the DSLR cameras…which would allow us to shoot with more than one camera, however, the codecs don’t seem quite robust enough to handle big screen blow ups, etc…tough call.
