If you’re dreaming of an epic elopement in the rugged beauty of Northern Ireland, there’s one important thing you need to add to your checklist: an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA).

Starting in 2025, travelers from the United States and Canada (and non-UK/non-Irish citizens) need to apply for an ETA before entering the UK. Don’t worry—it’s a simple process that’s quick and straightforward, and it ensures a smooth journey to the breathtaking landscapes where your adventure awaits.

Fun Fact!: Northern Ireland, is part of the United Kingdom. Ireland & Northern Ireland have no border or physical border controls!

An ETA is an official document that gives you permission to travel to the UK for a short stay. It’s not a visa, but it’s required even if you’re just passing through the UK on your way to Northern Ireland.

Who Needs an ETA?

If you’re a citizen of the US or Canada you’ll need to apply for an ETA before traveling to Northern Ireland or anywhere else in the UK (including Scotland & Wales). This requirement applies whether you’re arriving by plane, ferry, or even a connecting flight. You will still need an ETA if you fly into Dublin, Ireland, and then drive up to Northern Ireland.

UK ETA Exemptions: Who Doesn’t Require One?

You don’t need to apply for an ETA if any of the following apply to you:

• You live in Ireland and are traveling directly from Ireland, Guernsey, Jersey, or the Isle of Man.
• You already have a valid visa for the UK.
• You have permission to live, work, or study in the UK (including settled or pre-settled status or right of abode).
• You are a British or Irish citizen.
• You hold a British Overseas Territories citizen passport.
