Cinemills recently teamed with Paul Crouch Jr., for the The Word Network, at the television studio, in Aliso Viejo.

On Friday, 5-18-2012 Paul sat down with the, young star, Bailee Madison, for an interview on her latest film, "Cowgirls 'N Angels".

This young actress has worked with a number of the industry's biggest stars in a variety of diverse and challenging roles. She won rave reviews and a Critics Choice Movie Award nomination for her powerful work on the feature film, "Brothers" opposite Tobey Maguire, Natalie Portman and Jake Gyllenhaal. She played the young 'Betty Ann Waters' in Fox Searchlight's "Conviction" with Hilary Swank and Minnie Driver. (See full IMDB bio)

"Cowgirls N' Angels" tells the story of Ida, a feisty and rebellious young girl, who has fantasies of finding her father, a rodeo rider. While searching for her dad, she connects with the Sweethearts of the Rodeo, a team of young female rodeo riders run by former rodeo star Terence Parker. Recognizing Ida's innate talent for trick riding, Terence recruits her for their ranks. Cinemills helps production companies streamline their workflow with new LED lighting technology.

Recently, Cinemills Cinesoft Luminaireswas used in a new car commercial. The light fixtures where rigged overhead from the subjects, and color balanced to emulate night scenes.

The Cinesoft has features that allow the user to dial in color temperature from 3800-5600 kelvin. Additional gels can also be applied, to the accessory frame, to create a specific look.

In addition, the units only consume 1.5 A power, in the house hold circuit, you can plug in up to eight units without popping any breakers. See video below for more specs on the fixture.

VSO Media Finds New Solutions With LEDZ Brute Lights

Doug Farris and Duane Hanakeawe, from VSO Media, just stopped by the Cinemills booth C2161, at this years NAB Show. They briefly told their stories about previous obstacles, and now, found new solutions to light their scenes and projects with the Cinemills LEDZ line.

Doug and Duane are happy to pick up four Brute 6 lights from our booth.

VSO Media was originally started by two media professionals who came together to help provide post-production services for a television pilot produced by Balance Vector Productions. Once the decision was made to go ahead and produce a whole season of the show these two men decided to create what became known as VSO Media. The show went on to be titled “Coolfuel Roadtrip” and has since aired in syndication, the Discover Science Channel, the new Planet Green channel and internationally on the Outdoor Life Network and Discovery India.

Backed by one of the founder’s extensive Production experience VSO Media has grown from its Post-Production beginnings to become a full service production company. As the company expanded its service offerings the company needed to expand its facilities as well. VSO now operates three video editing suites, an audio post-production suite, recording studios and rehearsal spaces, all within blocks of the Pacific Ocean in Santa Cruz’s beautiful west side.

The Cinemills 12/18k HMI Fresnel the, "workhorse," of the industry, was lighting the way for a new pilot series. Filming in Silverlake, at one of the local cafes, a couple of the light fixtures stand at the side walk ready to light the interior scenes.

Mark Sawicki On Visual Effects and Lighting

We recently teamed up Masters POV at the Cinematography Conference 2012. Mark Sawicki was one of the special guest speaker/instructor at the event.

Mark covered several topics from the event, and he also touched up on lighting. Before his transition into digital, Visual Effects cameraman Mark Sawicki documented the old style craftsmanship of the traditional optical cameraman. This program pays homage to an exciting craft that was handed down from one camera person to another in the last age of apprenticeship.

In the workshop “Stop Motion” Mark Sawicki demonstrated the cinematography considerations for two stop motion commercials including Green screen set up and exposure, creating synthetic shadows, front light back light and crowd replication.

After the event, we asked Mark a few questions:

With new technology constantly changing, especially, how we acquire images, how important is it to light your projects?

Proper lighting is the most important aspect in the creation of the image. It creates the master template onto which we hang all the rest of the elements that make up the visual aspects of storytelling. Lighting is so much more than merely obtaining an exposure. New camera products touting the ability to shoot in extremely low light conditions gives the false impression that the use of lights is unnecessary. Nothing could be farther from the truth or more damaging to the art form.

What’s your thoughts on story-telling with lighting?

We are surrounded by light every waking moment of our lives. It effects us in so many subtle and invisible ways by creating impressions, moods and feelings that touch us time and again in our adventure through life. The cinematographer orchestrates the music of light to tell stories with pictures that help define and focus the triumphs and tragedies of the human condition.

What would you say to new up-and-coming filmmakers about lighting and story-telling?

Young filmmakers today get very focused on narrow aspects of the movie making process. Many times it is all about directing the actors and and other aspects of the process seem to get short shrift. "Everything" in movie making needs attention starting with the story. Hair and makeup, costumes, set design, acting and camera are all vitally important and it is the lighting that brings all those visual elements together to make an effective photoplay.

This year, the president of Cinemills was part of the Oscars 2012. Carlos De Mattos, and his good friend Brian Ross, walked the red carpet amongst the Hollywood elite.

Carlos has a history with the Academy Awards, in the past, he has won an Oscar for technical achievement.

The Cinemills LEDZ lights was also part of the red carpet event, lighting up the talent from the E! channel.

Karl Walter Lindenlaub, ASC, BVK, has photographed a variety of features from summer blockbuster movies to small, intimate dramas and romantic comedies, known for such pictures as INDEPENDENCE DAY, CHRONICLES OF NARNIA: PRINCE CASPIAN, and STARGATE. He has a lot of experience with complex effects heavy movies and commercials, that he will share with you in his workshop and seminar.

In his workshop “Lighting on Stage for Day and Night”, Karl Walter Lindenlaub will demonstrate how to create different looks for an apartment set. These tools give the cinematographer ways to support a dramatic story by bringing a set on stage to life. Different ways to create sun light, soft day light, as well as Dusk and Night light will be discussed, and as time permits, demonstrated.
