After almost 2 months of the phone being in transit or at the Nokia subcontracted service center, the executive resolution manager came clean. "we don't have the parts for your phone, and we don't know if we'll ever get them." All they could do was send me an agreement to sign so I'll get an E61i in exchange for the e70 I haven't used since late August.

I'm done with Nokia, I'll ebay the E61i as soon as I get it, and I've just bought myself a Blackberry Curve 8310 with GPS. Finally a phone that works with my corporate email system, live GPS, and 4 separate email accounts easily set up. Signed up for side-grade on my IM+ client, and I'm upset ShoZu doesn't support my blackberry...yet.

I highly recommend a Blackberry Curve, I hope it doesn't break within 8 months!

Well the phone started showing problems in the last half of August 2007, just 8 months after I got it. People were complaining that they either couldn't hear me, or I sounded like I was talking through a snorkel. I called it in for service, and had to pay shipping to an authorized service repair place, by the name of Palco. They got the phone August 27th, but did not send it back until September 17th. Of course, the repair ticket said "Fault Information: Software Upgrade", with no repair/parts used listed. I installed the same SIM card that was in it, but the phone comes up OFFLINE with an X next to the time display. After speaking with Level 2 Nokia Support, and wiping out my data, they confirmed the phone has some serious error, and would send me shpping labels. After a week, I STILL DON'T HAVE THE LABELS! I called again this morning, they have NO record of sending out labels, they said they'd recreate the trouble ticket, and to call back in another 3 days to make sure this one went through. I'm so annoyed, I think Palco royally screwed up my phone and Nokia USA Support has done little if anything to make good on Palco's mistakes.

It's been a while since I've had a candy bar style phone, and I forget how important it is to lock the keys prior to dropping the phone into my front jeans pocket. Well thanks to reader Mike who told me about AutoLock which is freely available for our symbian phone. It's a life saver, and I know anyone in my contact list that starts with "a" is very happy!! Thanks Mike, and for those who are interested, here are some other suggestions on Nokia E70 / Symbian OS applications.

All S60 phones are not upgradeable t new feature packs. That means you will have to buy a new phone to benefit from "S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 1" or "2". It will not be possible to get this for the E70, but they may come out with a new E70i (or similar) at 3GSM.

MiniSD Size limitation

In regards to using a 4GB Mini SD Card on a Nokia E70 or any E Series phone... the user manual says that the card will be formatted with FAT16, which has a partition limitation of 2GB on most OS's but 4GB on some.

I just spoke to Transcend technical support, makers of this MiniSD 4GB card, and they told me that Nokia E70 owners are out of luck, we'll have to stick with a maximum 2GB Card!

Definitely keeping the Nokia E70!!

After 4 days of extensive use of the Nokia E70 Unlocked GSM Phone, I'm quite sure, the only better phone out there will be the next revision of this phone. I'll be very upset if that happens anytime soon, but Cell phones, just like the rest of technology are here today, gone tomorrow.

The Nokia E70 phone works flawlessly with the Motorola Bluetooth headset I got when I had my RAZR, which is surprising I've experienced issues with Motorola's bluetooth compatibility.

I downloaded, and am using the supposed ringtone for the Apple iPhone when it’s released… here’s the link to the mp3 file.

I have PuTTY on mine! got it from the Iptel.org tips & tricks website
which allows me to SSH, Telnet, Rlogin, etc.

Install PuTTY . I also recommend to install the addional fonts which you can find in the same directory.The display of E70 has high resolution and the original PuTTY fonts are hard to read.

I have a shell account at my ISP, and this comes in handy for checking my email via Pine.... unix command line via a mobile phone!! It's enough to make a network admin run to the bathroom!!

Cingular 3G vs. EDGE... whats the difference for a Nokia E70 User?

The Nokia E70 is a 3G compliant phone, BUT from what I've found out, Cingular broadcasts their 3G network on a frequency that the Nokia doesn't see it (3G does work in Europe). THEREFORE, if you have a Nokia E series phone on Cingular, it's running on the EDGE network. Here is what CNet says about 3G/EDGE:

"...Cingular's EDGE service is currently more widely available than faster 3G services. With coverage in more than 13,000 cities and towns and on 39,000 miles of highways, EDGE is still among the best mobile connectivity offerings available for hardened road warriors.
Cingular's EDGE service is nice in a pinch, but it's pricey and a far cry away from faster 3G networks, such as EVDO and UMTS. You can use Cingular's EDGE service to send and receive e-mail, run an instant messenger, and browse the Web, but don't expect content-rich Web pages to load with a quick ping. Instead, prepare to watch graphics gradually fill in the page. Video and audio streams are choppy at best. VoIP and Remote Desktop connections are equally disappointing. There's only so much you can accomplish with a typical data transfer rate ranging from 70Kbps to 135Kbps. True, Cingular's EDGE service is nearly twice the speed of poky CDMA 1xRTT connections and about three times faster than GPRS, but EDGE still lacks the bandwidth for smoothly surfing today's Internet."

I would probably call this a clincher to return the Nokia E70 phone; but, in reality, the IM client works great, and the yahoo mail loads fine. In addition, I have also found out that Cingular 3G is very spotty even in Los Angeles. I went to the Cingular store in Sherman Oaks last night, talked to the guy there who has a 3G capable HTC phone, we compared speeds, and the Nokia loaded quicker... reason for this was, the closest 3G area was 10 miles away in Burbank. He also seemed to think that Cingular would be slow to improve the area coverage, so I'll consider it more when I get my next phone.

NO FM Radio on the Nokia E70

On my post last Friday night, I said I ordered the HS-23 FM Radio headset from LetsTalk.com based on the following description:

I just found out that this E70 does NOT have any FM Radio, contrary to the misleading description above. Nonetheless, the dual earphone headset is still useful for listening to streaming media, podcasts, mp3's, etc.

Funny thing is, if you google (adj.) E70 FM, you'll get a number of listings, and from first glance at link descriptions, would make you believe the unit has FM Radio. Again, upon further review of each of these sites, you'll generally see the tech specifications, with no check mark next to the words FM Radio.

Oh well, a function that was more icing on the cake than anything.

Installed ShapeService's IM+ trial software today..

I was happy with the interface on this clever little client which does most of the protocols including, AIM, Gtalk, MSN, Y!, ICQ (who uses that?), and Jabber (and that?).

Issue remains: seems to timeout quickly, and I have to reconnect, sometimes AIM doesn't successfully connect. I may try a different client. Searched the documentation, and the FAQ's, but no mention. How is it possible that a software vendor has a site but doesn't set up community forums?

Interesting, the software doesn't use the usual phone SMS style of IM; instead, it's like your on a regular desktop client. The software runs over the GPRS network, instead of using text messaging. Keeps costs down since Cingular raised their SMS prices.

What were the odds I was so lucky to get myself out of a jam, had to use my phone today to solve a problem of data recovery for my boss? (long story, but I got those contacts parsed nicely into Outlook)... enough said, I had to hard reset my phone 3 times today, mostly to deal with that issue, but I'm getting much better at the initial configuration.

When booting up for the first time, the phone goes right to cingular's network, and is pretty much good to go. Just select the country/city, go to the tools menu>date and time settings, select the Auto adjust for operator, and it sets time/date. Log on the nokia website go to support>settings, and send the Yahoo Mail Plus settings to my phone, and wella, I have email.
Surprised that the data cable being USB doesn't also act as a charger when plugged into the phone; although, the battery has not died on me. Not a huge fan of the cable either, the physical connection seems a bit quirky, a mini USB port would have been a better idea... but you got to sell thos proprietary accessories... right? I will say Nokia does a good job on keeping the same AC chargers, I'm able to use the car charger from my old 6822!
One other issue with the data cable... every time you plug the phone in with the data cable to the computer, don't walk away... you need to select "PC Desktop Suite" on the connection dialog box on the phone itself (otherwise your computer will not see the phone). This is annoying, especially when you reached into the back of the cpu to plug it in!

I would like to ask the designer of the phone case a couple of questions. Why did you put a protruding button on the side of the phone that acts a voice record button? So I can constantly record messages by accident? Secondly, why did you make the phone have such sharp edges? I feel like I have the generation 1 iPod for a phone, in the future you could make the plastics a little more (soft) rounded at the ends. This is my biggest gripe with physical use of the phone; however, the weight of the phone is surpringly light, at least compared to a Treo.
PC Suite program itself is pretty easy to use, and doesn't require much to even post about... it takes about 10 seconds to learn the program, as you can see the main menu below.

I just found this post from another site. The hard reset worked... up comes what country I'm in.

HARD reset you power off the phone. Then hold down the “green” key for
calling, the “*” and the number “3″ key. While holding down all three keys press
the power button. Then you still hold down the three keys for about 10 more
seconds as the phone begins to power up.

After a couple hours I've realized this phone was returned by someone named Ashley P. She configured the phone, and the settings are still in there... my attempt to create a blog of install notes on a fresh unlocked phone are hampered by the fact that I have to undo the settings and delete her data. I've gone so far as to review and remove probably 20+ calendar entries. I will have to call Nokia Support in the morning for some help on completely erasing to factory settings. I didn't see this one coming!

From the Nokia Phone Suite main browser you have lots of options I'll start with a software update.

Downloaded latest Nokia Updater Software for Phone (19.7mb), to install via PC Suite - No need to backup unit, since no real data on it yet.

Software downloads and must also be installed on to PC, then run the application. Software is not actually an updater, just an updating software that allows you to update your phone.

And now it tells me I have the latest software, so thats good news... but odd.

I will say it's easy to see/transfer data on this phone via windows explorer.

Arrived Monday at 1pm - FedEx works wonders!

For 2nd day shipping, ordered Friday night, I'd say this phone came sooner than expected. I'll spare you a review of the phone since plenty of reviews can be seen on my previous post. I will say a few initial things.

Phone keypad digits aren't as nice/ergonomic as my older 6822 model; however, the fold out keypad is very nice, and works great.
Copied my contacts on my LG to the SIM card, put the SIM card and battery in the E70, and it booted, immediately on service with Cingular, ready to make a call.
Very intuitive interface, copied the contacts over, keeps people with multiple numbers as single contacts; however, it labels each number as a mobile device. I'll probably attempt to copy over from my outlook contacts later on.
CD loads, just annoying flash intro, thought it wasn't working... nothing useful on the CD. Nokia's PC Suite Application is version 6.8 on the CD, but downloaded 6.822 off their webiste.

I'm sure I could have gotten it cheaper on eBay, but I wanted a reputable dealer... this is who you buy it from if you go through Nokia's website (at least this is the vendor they list on their return info). I opted not to use buy.com since they tried to stick a 15% restocking fee on the last thing I ordered from them. I also usually go with pricegrabber.com sites if I'm looking for the cheapest, but these guys weren't much more, and I like the return policy.

I was so happy with my cheap piece of s#it LG C2000 (incidentally a great device) phone for a year, and then my buddy had to wow me with his Cingular blackjack... now I have to get a new phone, but not the blackjack (even though I have an upgrade option from cingular and could have got it for 199). I ordered an expensive unlocked Nokia E70 that requires me to hack the s#it out of it, just to get service on Cingular with all the bells and whistles close to he has. Why you ask? I had the older 6800 version a while back, and loved it, lost the phone. I didn't find a lot of info on customer experience with the device, so I'm going to attempt to log all my issues, for future people who want this phone and have Cingular (Orange). Hopefully I'll be back to txt messaging in no time with this bad boy. Going to install 3rd party chat clients, attempt to access MS Exchange server at work, and it does WLAN... that means I can potentially use it as a handset if I had Vonage VoIP service in my house, or for fast web access in my house. And it has a 2 mp camera, which I'm sure sucks as they all do. I also ordered a dual ear headset (with fm radio) since it has an mp3 player on board and takes miniSD, my iPod Photo is looking a little old, and big to be dragging to the gym every day along with my cell phone.
