Fixings and Variations

Ring Binders for Walls come in two variations, with either 4-hole rings or 2-hole rings.

Each is supplied in either magnetic or self-adhesive fixings.

Magnetic versions are suitable for use on most magnetic whiteboards, shelving, and other flat surfaces. In contrast, the self-adhesive version offers a more permanent fixing option on sealed surfaces and where heavier folders are involved (folders not supplied).

Following the previous post about the training for the scientific expedition to the Arctic, Sonia, our ‘sponsee’, has provided us with an update on the completion of the expedition:

After two weeks of preparations in the Arctic, the team set off on the 8-day scientific expedition across the valleys of Svalbard. Anticipation, excitement, and nerves were all high as the team packed final bits into the pulks, adjusted the harness straps, and strapped boots into the ski bindings.

And then we were off.

Skiing out of the town of Longyearbyen (where we had spent the last two weeks) and leaving the lights behind felt good. And thoughts of the week ahead flooded the mind. Would we achieve all our aims? What conditions would we face? And would we all make it?

We would then set off skiing: 2 hours on, 15 minutes off, 2 hours on – until we reached our camp for the night. We aimed to keep our breaks to 15 minutes – in which time we would stuff as much food and liquid into us as quickly as we could, however its length was often determined by how long we could keep warm without moving, often closer to 8 minutes.

We would repeat this until we reached our camp for the night. Here it would be the routine of setting up camp, taking scientific measurements, and boiling snow water to rehydrate meals and fill flasks before settling in to get some much-needed sleep. A similar routine was set for mornings.

The expedition got off to a tough start, and on day 1 two strong team members had to be extracted due to old injuries resurfacing. It was a strong reminder that what we were doing was tough and that we should be prepared to expect anything.

Our route took us into Polar Bear territory, which meant we would have people on the lookout at all times. During the day we would all keep an eye out whilst skiing, and at night polar bear watch would become a rota, and we were each assigned around 2hrs 30min a night each to keep watch.

My polar bear watches made up both my favorite and least favorite portions of the entire experience. Once woken, I would extract myself from my warm sleeping bag and as quietly as possible, so as to not wake my sleeping teammates, would dress into warm down outer clothing and attempt to exit the tent without stepping on anyone in the dark. Here I would meet the previous bear watcher and would exchange information on the surroundings, before being passed a flare gun, pen flares, the rota and a watch – before they would head off for some sleep.

After taking a good look around, I would often start my bear watch with some hot water from my flask. I would then take my first set of scientific measurements – which I would continue until my hands got too cold, after which I would stick my hand in my armpit to warm up before putting my outer layer of gloves back on. Then I’d start doing my daily stretches which had the duel benefit of keeping me moving and warm whilst outside, and preventing injuries from skiing. Whilst continuously keeping a look out I’d spend my watches rotating between hot drinks, taking measurements and doing stretches. Bear watch often went quite quickly and when conditions were good it felt great to spend some time just me and nature, it felt very calming and fairly incredible when the aurora was strong. Bear watch alone and in a storm when temperatures were in the -20s, however, felt less calming, and the complete lack of visibility was slightly unnerving at times.

There were no polar bear sightings during this expedition.

Reaching the waterfall marked our halfway point! I don’t know why I was surprised it was frozen. It was a great moment for the team to celebrate by getting a group photo together!

Throughout the week we experienced drastic temperature fluctuations, completely calm days, extremely windy days, whiteouts, and a mix of precipitation levels. There was one afternoon when the side wind was so strong our pulks would get caught by the wind and attempt to drag us sideways, and a few of us fell over in the strongest gusts. Our coldest recorded temperature was -25°C and our warmest was around 0°C. Other days were calm and the sky was filled with stars, satellites and on occasion, the aurora would come out for us. The weather did fluctuate far more greatly than expected – something which is becoming more frequent as predicted by science due to increasing green-house gases in our atmosphere and resultant climate change.

This reinforced the very reason we were here – to accurately measure on-the-ground weather data, enabling the calibration of the weather station models. The weather data collected during this expedition will be analysed and sent to the Met Office to use for calibration of models. This included Barometric Pressure, Density Altitude, Dew Point Temperature, Heat Stress Index, Relative Humidity, Station Pressure (Absolute Pressure), Temperature, Wet Bulb Temperature (Psychrometric) and Wind speed. We will also inform the Norwegian Polar institute that there were no polar bear sightings on our route – this will contribute towards their ongoing studies of polar bear distribution.

It was overall a testing week with a real sense of achievement upon completion. There were many learnings across the week (for me, appreciating the practical difficulties of collecting simple sets of data in extreme environments was a big one), and the team are all looking forward to the next big scientific expedition.

Svalbard, an archipelago located well within the Arctic circle (78 degrees North), just 600 miles from the North pole, made an ideal training ground for the team. With 24 hours of darkness, typical temperatures of -12 to -18 degrees and unpredictable weather fluctuations, the team quickly learned to have respect for the conditions and take precautions when outside for longer than a few minutes at a time. Following the previous post about the scientific expedition to the Arctic for climate change, Sonia, our ‘sponsee’, has provided us with an update on the completion of the expedition:

It very quickly became apparent that weather forecasts weren’t to be relied upon, and when out in the field we should be prepared for any eventuality. This reinforced the very reason we were here – to accurately measure on-the-ground weather data, enabling the calibration of the weather station models (essential for understanding the changing climate, and the wildlife which rely upon this changing environment).

Our first week consisted of learning polar bear encounter drills, ski practice, tent & other kit repairs and use of pulley systems (often used to pull pulks up steep inclines – but also essential for major incidences such as a team member falling down a crevasse). It was also a great chance to understand what freezing temperatures really felt like – and how to avoid cold injuries.

Our second week focused on practicing what if’s…. What if our tent ripped? What if we had an injury? What if we had a bear attack? What if someone got hypothermia?

We spent the first couple of days learning how to make snow shelters, practicing our bear drills using escalation of force, first aid scenarios with a focus on keeping the injured teammate warm whilst being treated and kit repairs.

We then spent time planning our routes before setting off on the mini 3-day expedition to put everything together before the final expedition.

The 3-day expedition was a great opportunity to work out how much food we were likely to need, what clothing we’d wear and to schedule the bear and stovie rotas. Bear watch had to be done alone for around 2-2.5 hours each night on a rota basis, and anyone spotting a bear would then wake the rest of the team up. The ‘stovie’ job was done morning and night and involved collecting and melting snow for drinks and the rehydrated meals – boiling snow water took a long time, especially on the coldest nights!

The training and the 3-day expedition were great fun, but also exhausting as the full realisation of the size of the challenge sunk in. We had one rest day to recover and pack before the 8 day expedition would begin.

In January 2023, Sonia Evans will be going to Svalbard, the Arctic, with the Ice Warrior project. She will be collecting vital scientific data – furthering our understanding of Arctic processes and the way the Arctic Ocean is responding to the changing climate – which will help enable us to protect it and the species which rely on it. John and Amanda at CiS wanted to sponsor Sonia and this expedition as they are passionate about protecting the environment and vulnerable communities around the world from the effects of Climate Change – and protection comes from knowledge.

The Arctic’s average temperature has already risen at a rate of almost three times the global average, warming faster than any other region on earth. This not only affects the species which live in the Arctic – with Sea ice melt driving global ocean processes and therefore affecting global weather patterns – it also affects the planet. It is therefore incredibly important to understand this Ocean better, so we can help protect it in the future.

Whilst processes in the Arctic aren’t currently fully understood, satellite data has shown us that Arctic Sea ice is shrinking by 12.6% per decade, and has almost halved since records began (1979). The practicality of conducting research in this harsh and remote environment may be the reason there are still so many unknowns surrounding Arctic science, and may be partly why there isn’t more being done to prevent the loss of Arctic sea ice.

We can’t change the past, but the Ice Warrior Project aims to conduct the most comprehensive research possible with the resources available. In January 2023, the Expedition team will be heading to Svalbard, the Arctic, to do just this. It’s a unique place, and for the month that they are there it’ll be dark 24 hours a day, they will carry firearms for the unlikely case of a polar bear attack, and they will experience temperatures similar to that of a freezer!

The Ice Warrior Arctic expedition has 3 main aims:

1. To help understand better the abundance and spatial distribution of polar bear populations. There are 19 populations of polar bears, of which 8 do not have sufficient data to identify whether their populations are increasing or decreasing, so we are working with the Norwegian Polar Institute to better understand this.
2. To help calibrate models for predicting future Arctic warming. As evident by the dramatically reducing sea ice extent, the climate is changing. We have a broad understanding of how the Arctic Circle is warming, however, models are yet to be properly calibrated and so predictions aren’t as accurate as needed. We will be working with the Met Office to do this.
3. To raise public awareness of how the Arctic is changing (due to climate change) and the effects this has using media, public talks, and evidence.

Sonia’s Story:

I’m a 20-year-old Oceanography and Marine Biology student at Plymouth University. I have always loved the ocean and challenging environments; I enjoy dinghy and yacht sailing, wild camping, sea swimming and exploring! I am truly concerned about Climate Change and want to measure its effects and communicate the status so that all stakeholders can grasp the enormity of the situation and make the required changes with urgency.
