Citizen Space is a coworking space in the SOMA/South Park district of San Francisco for hard-working, fun-loving: entrepreneurs, designers, web and software developers, social media consultants, marketing professionals, etc. We’re looking for a fantastic intern who loves what coworking is all about and wants to learn more about space operations, marketing, networking, etc.

Internship: 15-18 hours/week (including occasional evenings/weekends for events); hours flexible.

You will gain experience in the following areas:

Marketing Communications: Assist with and lead marketing and outreach projects. From developing web site content, writing e-newsletter articles to designing e-newsletters, data entry, to qualifying networking opportunities and working in social media. This role can grow or change depending on the interests of the intern. Possibility to work on graphic design projects.
Membership/Visitor Relations: Be present in the space to answer resident, visitor and Drop-In inquiries. Help with general physical upkeep of the space. Among a myriad of possible projects: Member Survey, Wiki redesign, Member lunches, misc research projects.
Event Production: Assist with organization and coordination of evening (and occasionally weekend) events. This includes planning, answering questions, promoting, set up and clean up.
Coworking: How coworking works (history and how to), current residents, entrepreneurial practices, small business management, community development, etc.

Terms: Unpaid, but you will have your own workspace or desk (the desk is a $425/month value) to work on your own projects. You will also be part of this community and develop relationships with the 20 professionals that work in this space. There is the possibility to obtain additional paid work/internship opportunities through those connections.
Minimum commitment: 60 days. There is also the possibility for this experience to turn into a paid part-time position at the end of the internship.

Qualifications. Mature, recent or soon-to-be college graduate or similar professional. Experience or interest in communications, marketing, community development or related areas. Must be self-motivated, passionate, responsible. Must be computer literate and have your own laptop. Sense of humor always appreciated.

Our blog is coming alive again

We’ve been quiet for awhile now in the blogosphere, but have been active in other areas. It’s been almost a year now we’ve been in the new space. Currently about 15 full-time residents, plus the always welcome and interesting array of Drop-Ins. I started working here part-time last June, and every day am amazed and grateful for the hard work people put in to make this space successful.

In the next few weeks our new web-site will go live, with easier to access information and new photographs of the space. And February and March promise some exciting events. Next week is Social Media Week San Francisco! Chris Heuer/Social Media Club have been working their tails off to organize this event. More info about that and the morning event on the “State of Coworking Today” shortly…

Changes and expansion at Citizen Space

Tara blogged about some exciting changes underway at Citizen Space, most notably a move from the 1500 ft² space on the third floor to a 3500 ft² space on the first, giving us much better access to the street and providing ample room for larger events and more coworkers.

The transition to this space will take place over the next several months, with the move-in date right around March 1.

This transition also marks a change in management and ownership at Citizen Space. The new space will be wholly run and jointly owned by Tara, Elisabeth Norris and Hillary Hartley.

Personally, I’m thrilled to see how much Citizen Space has grown, and how much coworking as a movement has evolved (and continues to accelerate its spread) since I blogged about the idea just over three years ago. The community owes its success to its inclusivity and diversity, and to the caliber of the people who contribute to its culture, and with that in mind, I’m even more confident about the future of Citizen Space as I move on to my next venture.

Co-Ho-Holiday Party at Citizen Space

The holidays are here once again and we would love to share them with you!

Please join us at Citizen Space on Wednesday, December 17th, 2008, from 6pm – 8pm for the Co-Ho-Holiday party. There will be merriment, munchies and a special guest who is know for his jolly laughter! You really don’t want to miss this.

All are welcome … family, kids, friends, and pets! The more the merrier.

Laughing Squid’s Last Minute Unholiday Party at Citizen Space

We’re apparently not so good at this blogging thing (but I guess that’s what Twitter is for), but last night we hosted Laughing Squid’s Last Minute Unholiday Party, an intimate and great time, representing many of the things that are great about the Bay Area geek/tech community… in particular the spontaneous nature of what are often constitute the best events.

Scott’s got a list of photos from the event and I can pretty confidently report that a good time was had by all.

Dec 13 Event: Co-Hopping!

The group of us who run coworking spaces in San Francisco, including: Citizen Space, The Hat Factory, Sandbox Suites, The Altrupreneur Center and AF83 are really excited to be throwing a conjoint Co-Hopping Event on Thursday December 13 from 6:30-10:30 pm. We are also really excited to have Bio-Diesel Betty (aka Lindsay Hassett) entertaining us between venues in her bus with the Bamboo Floors, pillows and, what else, bio-diesel fuel.

The route map looks something like this:

And can be found on Google Maps. The event commences at Citizen Space (425 2nd Street, #300), but you could potentially begin at any of the spaces on the route and catch up with us as the bus will be making the loop throughout the evening. There will be food and drinks at each of the spaces and the event is totally free.

The night is intended to give people a flavor of the different spaces, meet the peeps who run them, find out a little more about coworking and just generally celebrate. Hope you can come out and celebrate with us!

This Thursday: Finish your %#&*@ drafts

It’ll be remarkable if I get this post out, but if I do, this Thursday, Oct 18, we’re having a get-together at Citizen Space to help others do what I’m doing right now: Finish your %#&*@ drafts!

As for myself, I’ve got countless blog posts that I started, worked on and then abandoned or just never got around to finishing. Heck, I even have a category on my blog called Untitled, unfinished, incomplete.

But, no more!

This Thursday the idea is to come together and peer pressure productivity. I’ll be providing some decent coffee (leaded and unleaded) and light munchies… you bring your laptop and a penchant for finishing what you started… ages ago.

I haven’t figured out how we’ll celebrate the work we get done that night, but presuming that it’s a success, you can rest assured that there will be all kinds of epiphanal blog posts making the rounds on Friday.

Plan to show up between 6:30pm and 7:00 and then working until 11 (or until your CTS kicks in. It’ll be a good time, one way or another.

Citizen Space mugs have arrived!

Thanks to the good folks at Right Sleeve, we’ve received our order of sweet mugs (inspired by Wishingline’s original mugs).

The mug design process was captured, where else, but on Flickr?

For now, Citizen Space tenants will be the first recipients of mugs — and a number will replace our janky IKEA mugs that had been serving us in the conversation room. The rest well… would be perfect additions to coworking spaces around the world!
