Next Tuesday, June 25th, join us at Fortune Sound Club for Giraffage, Mister Lies, Noble Oak and 8prn.

Giraffage offers a fresh, sample-rich sound of dreamy pop beats, sensual synths and lush experimental electronica. The creation of 23 year-old Charlie Yin of San Francisco, Giraffage is an exciting new producer with an intuitive grasp of modern music manipulation, delivering beats that are dripping with vibes and accessible to all.

Mister Lies is the operational alias for producer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Nick Zanca. Equipped with a laptop, several controllers and whatever instruments were lying around his congested dorm-room; he released his first EP anonymously before eventually revealing his identity. Zanca’s debut full-length MOWGLI, is the eight-track result of meditation and soul-searching – an aggressive hunt for self-awareness and feral youth.

Giraffage and Mister Lies come together to create an interesting evening of nocturnal pop and modern experimentation. Remember to join us at 9pm on June 25th at Fortune Sound Club! (147 E Pender St, Vancouver, BC V6A 1T5)

The last night is tonight, June 14.

I visited the Hive only briefly this year, so I missed many of the shows: so keep this in mind regarding my humble opinion. And as a format, it is still highly interesting and effective in introducing new theatre goers to new theatre makers. Unfortunately, there was a lack of danger and intensity to these works, a high proportion of which featured women in their underwear. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, but using underwear to imply intimacy – or steampunk to imply oddity or anachronism – is a surprising lack of newness.

For example, a story told while being tattooed was meant, I’m sure, as an exercise in endurance and metaphor; and the tattoo was beautiful. But the story was not original and thus all the weight lay in the performance. Alas, it couldn’t be heard or felt above the drone.

The steampunk wonder machine helmet was most likely the most intriguing, except for a masked man from whom I didn’t have the requisite 10 mins to participate in his experiments. And a heard tell of a tour outside that participants refused to spoil, meaning it was probably an experience worth having.

Hive: the New Bees is worth a chance as event and format; so far in the run it is without a full realization. There was a lack of polish – or edge – to this years event, though the enthusiasm was evident. I so thoroughly enjoyed last year that I will keep Hive: the New Bees buzzing in my heart until next year where hopefully things will be sweeter.

Its 3 years old next week, and you can even check out the new podcast.

But first we’ll explore the patina of sea.

More specifically, we explore IOU at Unit/Pitt Projects. The first show at their new location at 236 Pender, and the unfinished walls and smells of the market next door mingle with the smell of the sea and the roughened exterior of the the pieces.

Kalli Niedoba’s curatorial project brings together works by Steven Brekelmans, Colleen Heslin, Devon Knowles, Ben Raymer, Ian Robert Sandilands and Frieda-raye Green. Their pieces – excluding Frienda-raye Green’s video (click through!) – have been submerged in the Georgia Straight to beautiful and thoughtful results.

(L to R): Ben Raymer’s”Endings and Getaways” cast aluminium cap before submersion. The pieces are submerged. Steven Brekelmans’ “Rudimentary Figures 1.”

Listen tonight to learn why Kalli decided that her curatorial statement would be crated submersion.

Then stick around for Arts Project, in which Mikey Harker presents his full rendering of his conversation with Jesse Birch about Properties at the Western Front. Properties closes this Sunday, June 16 during their 40th Anniversary Open House.
