November 17, 2011 - January 16, 2012

LA Live Holiday Ice
November 26, 2011 - January 5, 2012

The outdoor ice rink at L.A. Live at Nokia Plaza provides a modern, edgier setting for this traditional pastime. Huge screens surround the complex flashing a constant barrage of commercials. A high-tech, sculptural metal tree changes color to the music, and icicle lights hanging on nearby trees complete this eye and ear popping scene. The rink is roomy enough (70 feet by 50 feet) for intermediate style ice skating.

2011 Merry TubaChristmas
December 3rd 6:00 PM

For the last 35 years, the holiday season has been ushered in with the sound of tubas at the annual Merry TubaChristmas concert. Literally hundreds of tuba and baritone players ranging in age from 8 to 80 come from all over Southern California to play Christmas carols to the delight of all in attendance.
The concert is free to the public, and the audience is encouraged to sing along.

49th Annual Los Angeles Harbor Holiday Afloat Parade
December 3rd 6:00 PM

With the theme of “Home for the Holidays,” approximately 50 boats of all shapes and sizes (including powerboats, sailboats, tall ships and harbor working craft) will cruise along the Main Channel. The parade, which is sponsored by the Port of Los Angeles, starts in the East Basin near Banning’s Landing Community Center in Wilmington and takes approximately 90 minutes to cover the entire parade route.

Viewers are also invited to enjoy festive pre-parade events beginning at 3 p.m. at Banning’s Landing Community Center in Wilmington.

The Nutcracker
December 3rd 7:30 PM & December 4th 2:00 PM

Returning for its third season, Los Angeles Ballet‘s performs the beloved holiday favorite, The Nutcracker. Set to Tchaikovsky's illustrious score, The Nutcracker follows the story of Clara and her family welcoming guests to a party on Christmas Eve and the magical adventures that ensue.The original production features lavish costumes and sets created expressly for Southern California!

Heritage Square Museum’s 17th Annual Holiday Lamplight Celebration
December 3rd & December 4th 4:00 PM - 8:30 PM

This is truly a unique and original holiday celebration. Victorian homes at Heritage Square are lit by the aura of lamp lights, transporting guests back through Californian history. Costumed hosts take visitors from house to house where the past meets the present to enjoy music, dancing, singing and more holiday cheer.

This event requires tickets and advanced reservations.

Christmas Festival on 8th Street
December 3rd and 4th 12 PM to 10 PM

The Christmas Festival on 8th Street (Festival Navideño en la Calle Ocho 2011) is in the heart of Koreatown, where many residents happen to be Latinos! Live music and entertainment spread over 10 blocks!

Avenues of Art and Design Holiday Walk
December 7, 2011 6:00 PM - 10:00 PM

The Avenues of Art and Design, (a fancy name for the shopping area along Melrose Ave, Robertson Blvd and Beverly Blvd in West Hollywood) will host their annual Holiday Walk, primarily along Melrose between San Vincente and Orlando. There will be carolers, roaming Santas and refreshments, this year with the addition of some of LA's popular gourmet food trucks. Check out the details of 2010's event as 2011 plans are still in the works.

Kids Christmas Spectacular
December 8, 2011

Kids Holiday Party at Dodger Stadium features games, a petting zoo, giant inflatable slides, jumpers, crafts, balloon animals, face painting, snacks, live music, rock wall climbing and TOY GIVEAWAY! All of this is FREE of charge to the children and families who attend. There will also be a Holiday Ham Giveaway on Dec. 15, 2011

Altadena’s Christmas Tree Lane
December 10, 2011 - January 1, 2012 & January 6 and 7, 2012

Every Christmas season for more than 80 years, the majestic deodars on the "Mile of Christmas Trees" are strung with 10,000 lights. Christmas Tree Lane in Altadena is the oldest large-scale Christmas lighting spectacle in the United States. Christmas Tree Lane is located in Altadena, CA on Santa Rosa Avenue between Woodbury Avenue and Altadena Drive. Lights are on Dusk to 10pm on Weekdays & Dusk to midnight on Holidays and Weekends.

Upper Hastings Ranch - Pasadena, CA
December 10, 2011 - January 1, 2012

Upper Hastings Ranch has become one of the most popular areas for neighborhood outdoor Christmas displays. Beginning in 1957 each block in the neighborhood began to decorate their homes with some type of theme icon placed in the parkway, e.g., snowmen, Christmas trees, Santa and his reindeer, Peanuts cartoon characters, etc. Tour by car (with headlights off) thru miles of lighting and other entertaining Christmas displays.

Located in northeast Pasadena in California, Upper Hastings Ranch is bordered by the city of Sierra Madre to the east, the Eaton Canyon Golf Course to the west, and Sierra Madre Blvd to the south.

The Balian Mansion
December 11, 2011 - December 25, 2011

The Balian Mansion has been lighted since 1955 and is arguably the pioneer of home holiday lighting. The Balian Mansion is located at the 5-point junction of Mendocino Street, Mendocino Lane, Allen Avenue, and East Glenview Terrace.

This stop off can be combined with Christmas Tree Lane by turning right on Altadena to Allen. Turn right on Allen and then left on Mendocino. You can’t miss the Balian House. For many, many years the Balian family has decorated their mansion and the three and one half acres that surround it. Park and join the throngs enjoying the sights. There are over 10,000 colored lights, many scenes like Santa Claus with his reindeer, elves, a nativity scene, and many others. Many of the scenes have movement. Live groups sing Christmas carols.

The VCA’s 30th Annual Holiday Boat Parade takes place Sunday, December 11. Be sure to walk the canals! The residents light up the night celebrating the holidays.

Daisy Avenue Christmas Tree Lane's Parade
December 12th, 5:00 PM

The parade began in 1953 by decorating the grass median on Daisy Avenue, and soon many area residents began decorating their homes and Daisy Lane as we now know it, was born! The event grew to include more displays, entertainment and a parade.

Deck The Halls
December 13, 2011 - December 31, 2011

The Los Angeles Philharmonic celebrate the holidays, including Christmas, Chanukah, and New Years Eve with an array of concerts titled, Deck The Halls. This diverse series kicks off December 13th & 14th with Handel's Messiah and concludes December 31st with an unforgettable fusion of Brazilian samba, ’30s Cuban dance and Parisian café by Pink Martini. "Feelin' Christmas-Sea in NewportBeach!"
December 14 - December 18, 2011

The Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade is fondly referred to as Newport Beach's Christmas Card to the world. The 103rd annual parade drifts for five consecutive nights, beginning Wednesday, December 14. The parade starts off Bay Island at 6:30 pm and finishes at the same site at approximately 9:00 pm each evening.

Las Posadas on Olvera Street
December 16 -24, 2011 5:30 PM - 8:30 PM

Las Posadas has been celebrated on Olvera Street since the 1930s. In Spanish, las posadas means “inns” or “shelters,” and represents the journey of Joseph and Mary to Bethlehem and their search for shelter. During Las Posadas, a costumed Mary and Joseph, (or alternately statues of them), accompanied by a candlelight procession of singers, musicians and community members, go from house to house looking for a room, being turned away at each stop.

Free champurrado (a Mexican hot beverage) and pan dulce (sweet bread) are served each night following the procession. There will also be a festive piñata breaking for the children.

5th Annual Merry Merry Movie
December 17, 2011 10:30 AM
The Playhouse District Association hosts its 5th Annual Merry Movie event with a free screening of "The Muppet Christmas Carol." Holiday treats and surprises await all who attend! The movie tells the tale of the Muppet Characters take of the Dickens classic holiday tale of Ebenezer Scrooge.

The screening will be followed by a free holiday concert by St. Lucy's Big Christmas Band in the Vroman's Courtyard. Little Junebugs will be hosting a holiday craft table for children to enjoy making one-of-a kind treasures.

Naples Long Beach Boat Parade
December 17, 2011

The 65th annual Naples Island Boat Parade in Long Beach is themed "T.V. Land Holidays" and features both large and small boats traveling the canals. There will also be "groups of carolers" strolling around Naples Island and singing holiday songs by the bridges. Most of the homes have been decorated for the holidays in accompaniment of the Boat Parade theme. Parking can be difficult and local streets close at 5:00PM so plan to arrive early and stroll around the island before the parade.

Menorah Lighting & Celebration
December20, 2011 8:00 PM

Join this beautiful menorah lighting with blessing and song, led by Downtown's Rabbi Moshe. Enjoy Jewish folk singers, bottle dancers, and dreidel fun. This event is free and open to the public.

51st Annual LA County Holiday Celebration
December 24, 2011

An annual tradition, the Emmy-nominated music and dance extravaganza is L.A.'s biggest holiday show - and it's FREE, so bring the whole family! Or, enjoy it from the comfort of your home on KCET-TV, KCET.org or KPFK 90.7 FM, while you finish decorating the tree or steaming tamales! "Childhood Holiday Memories” is the theme for this year’s Holiday Celebration, broadcast live from the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion on KCET-TV. 24 groups and nearly 800 performers will present music and dance of the season from the many neighborhoods and cultures of Los Angeles.

Tournament of Roses Parade
December 4, 2011 thru January 2, 2012

The Tournament of Roses Parade is "America's New Year Celebration", a festival of flower-covered floats, marching bands, equestrians and a college football game on Monday January 2nd because New Year's Day falls on Sunday this year! Produced by the non-profit Pasadena Tournament of Roses Association.

The annual parade was first held January 1, 1890 in Pasadena, California.

Typically 48 to 72 hours prior to parade day one can view several of the floats being decorated with flowery mantles, in the various 'float barns' that dot the Arroyo Seco / Rose Bowl area in West Pasadena, not far from the start of the parade. It is a rule of the parade that all surfaces of the float framework be covered in natural material (such as flowers, plants, seaweeds, seeds, bark, vegetables, or nuts, for example); furthermore, no artificial flowers or plant material are allowed, nor can the materials be artificially colored. Last-minute volunteering opportunities are often available.

Variety is truly a great thing.

It also happens to be one thing that we Angelenos have an absolute abundance of - Variety! Variety! Variety!

We have a variety of places to go; a variety of things to do; a variety of foods to eat, and a variety of people with whom to do it all.

Even with this variety, I usually go, do and eat the same thing day after day. But not today!

After deciding it was time to stray off the path, today became my "try something new" day.

I decided to change breakfast. My first meal of the day is usually cereal & juice or (once a week) beacon & eggs. Today, I wanted to try something completely new and different, but what?

I turned to the internet for ideas and came upon a site talking about a traditional breakfast in Tokyo. (Here)

It sounded good and completely different. Now I had to find where to eat. Yelp and eyespyla.com lead me to an article about Fukagawa.

Pictures like these below sold me on Fukagawa and on the traditional Japanese breakfast.

I opted for the fish breakfast which is just under $10. My tray looked a lot like the picture but mine seemed to have even more food.

Needless to say, the food was great and so was Fukagawa!

My first "try something new" day was so successful I've pledged to try something new more often.

These are all questions I've heard countless times for several popular destination spots in and around Los Angeles. One of the most popular destinations in Southern California is Disneyland so I'll use it to initiate the Whereabouts ...? posts.

Exactly where is Disneyland?

Disneyland is located at 1313 S Harbor Blvd in Anaheim, CA 92802 - about 26 miles South East of Downtown Los Angeles and 33 miles South East of Hollywood.

It is serviced by (5) major local airports.

They are John Wayne Airport (SNA), Long Beach Airport (LGB), Ontario International (ONT), and Los Angeles International (LAX), Bob Hope Airport (BUR).

Amtrak's Pacific Surfliner transits California's coastline from San Luis Obisbo to San Diego with several stops in between including one at the Anaheim Station, fairly close (about 4 miles) to Disneyland. Catch a cab (about $14) or transfer to the Anaheim Resort Transit Route 15 bus, which will take you directly to the Disneyland Resort.

I was getting a bit scared - thanks for picking me up… I’m late for my curfew, but only two minutes. Blame it on me - tell um the cab driver got lost - hit every red light and… No I can’t - you’re the best.

Wow it’s cold - Paul this is my son, Dave. We need to drop him off at Union station on the way okay. Sure. She goodbye to him and said, “I told you so.”

The Tournament of Roses Parade is "America's New Year Celebration", a festival of flower-covered floats, marching bands, equestrians and a college football game on New Year's Day (but moved to Monday if New Year's Day falls on a Sunday), produced by the non-profit Pasadena Tournament of Roses Association.

The annual parade was first held January 1, 1890 in Pasadena, California.

Typically 48 to 72 hours prior to parade day one can view several of the floats being decorated with flowery mantles, in the various 'float barns' that dot the Arroyo Seco / Rose Bowl area in West Pasadena, not far from the start of the parade. It is a rule of the parade that all surfaces of the float framework be covered in natural material (such as flowers, plants, seaweeds, seeds, bark, vegetables, or nuts, for example); furthermore, no artificial flowers or plant material are allowed, nor can the materials be artificially colored. Last-minute volunteering opportunities are often available.

A Night at The Greek... That Wasn’t Supposed To Be - Part One

The Greek is an almost hidden outdoor concert venue tucked into the foothills of Griffith Park just north of the most affluent residential area of Los Feliz. On this cool October night, the Indie rock group ‘Interpol’ closed The Greek’s 2010 season. For me, it was a great season in many ways: Great Music, Great People, Great Money. Who could ask for anything more?

I follow The Greek’s concert schedule and work there whenever it hosts an event but tonight there are just too many other things going on in LA; The Greek will have to close the season without a final visit from City 7100.

That was my original plan, but when I picked up a couple at Universal City and took them to Los Feliz, the plan changed. After dropping the couple at their destination I checked my watch. Its a little after 10:20 PM, to early for the concert to be over but I might get lucky and find someone leaving early. I’m nearby so I decide to check it out.

I continue on Los Feliz Blvd until I reach Vermont where I head north toward the entrance. It’s only about a mile on Vermont but when The Greek is “loading” (the hour before the start of a concert) it can take ten to fifteen minutes to travel past the multi-million dollar homes that line the winding road.

Now without traffic, it takes less than two minutes to be within earshot of the music and for me to get lucky. As I approach, a young lady hails the taxi. She jumps in and asks me (in a subtle English accent) to take her home to Hollywood. We had a nice chat during the twelve minutes it took to get her home. It was her first time at The Greek, she loved it and Interpol.

Because The Greek borders a residential area, concerts end by 11:00 PM and it’s almost 11:00 PM so I decided to head back to The Greek for the “unload” rush. On my way, I accept a dispatched call for a passenger named Michael who is waiting to be picked up at The Greek.

As I approached Vermont, I see a solid stream of cars leaving The Greek thus confirming that the concert was indeed over. This will make it tough to find and pick up Michael but I accepted the call so I have to try. I pass multiple groups of people jumping, waving, yelling and whistling trying to get me to stop on my way up back up the hill (some even stand in the middle of the street to force me to stop). I say, “Sorry, I’m taken” as they try to open the locked doors. I continue on.

I pull to the curb and am immediately meet by another flood of wannabe City7100 riders. The first rushes forward saying, “Did you come for us? We called for a cab.” I ask her name hoping she responds with Michelle assuming the call taker made a spelling error. No such luck. I frown as I explain my predicament. She asks to first on ‘stand-by’ in case I cant find my passenger.

The next wannabe rider ducks his head into the window asking to go to Orange County (a 50 + mile trip). I cross my fingers and ask his name. He replied, “Mike.” (Yeah!) “But I didn’t call. We need to get to Newport Beach, can you take us?” (Aargh!) I hated to kiss that $150 fare good-bye!

It was clear that I wasn’t going to find Michael so I waved at my ‘stand-by’ and mouthed, “I’ll take you.” She grabbed her friends and they all piled in… four beautiful young ladies. Okay, it wasn’t $150 but I still ended up with a great ride. They went to Birds Café for a late night snack.

Was it really fun? Of course! One beauty wore a knit frog cap that I mistakenly mistook for a pair of devil horns. Remember, I’m looking in the rear-view and it was dark so I thought the erect frog ears were horns. Not to worry, I was immediately corrected by the other beauties “It’s a yellow frog - they’re very rare don’t ya know.”

Later the three beauties in the backseat found out that City7100 doesn’t have a radio so they began to entertain me. The beauty in front looked on enjoying the impromptu rap concert. At one point, she said to the frog cap beauty, “You are the whitest Asian I know.” I later parroted that phrase and the back seat went quite. Oops… they hadn’t heard her say it but they heard me. The beauty up front came to my rescue and explained to the bewilder backseat trio that I was repeating what she had said during the rap session.

Whew - disaster averted and the rapid fire fun resumed. More singing, a few jokes, a hundred questions and a ton of laughs followed before I heard, “Do you have a my space page?” (or was it face book?) Either way, the answer was the same, “No, but I blog and I‘m going to blog about you.”

I handed her a card and said, “Check it out when you get a chance… ” Within a minute or two I hear, “I like you narrative style - I can’t wait to read the rest of it.”

Wow! Fun, affirmation and I have writing style too! Who could ask for anything more?

SIR, It's 447 Ocean Avenue!!

At LAX a couple settles in to the backseat of my taxi giving their destination as, 'The Ocean View Hotel' in Santa Monica.

She reads from her Blackberry to confirm, "Yes, it's the Ocean View Hotel, At 447 Ocean Ave. in Santa Monica."

They turn to each other and restart their conversation. It becomes obvious that they meet at the airport (maybe for the first time) and are headed to the same meeting or conference.

I'm familiar with Best Western's - Ocean View Hotel on Ocean but the address given seems off. Most hotels are located within blocks of the Santa Monica pier (around 1600 Ocean).

At what I hoped was an opportune time, I interrupted their conversation to confirm, "It’s the Best Western's Ocean View Hotel, right?"

She responds as if I've insulted her in some way, "It's not the Best Western. It is the Ocean View."

I reply, "I'm sorry, I only know of the Best Western - Ocean View, but it's located at 1447 Ocean."

"Didn't I tell him the address?" She says looking at her companion,

"I'll look it up again - Yes, it's the Ocean View at 4-4-7 Ocean Ave."

"Okay." I reply, "It might be a new hotel that I'm not familiar with, I'll go to that address."

They resume their conversation but the coincidence of 1447 & 447 still nags at me.

At a stop light, I search for Ocean View Hotel on my GPS and get 3 hits but nothing at 447 Ocean.

Maybe it is a brand new hotel, so I decide to try a Google search. I say, "Ocean View Hotel Santa Monica, CA" into the Google application on my IPhone.

She hears this and says to him, "He still doesn't know where he's going."

I feel her shooting needles with her eyes at the back of my head. I glance in the rearview mirror and see a cold stare.

Google only shows the hotel at 1447 Ocean - but I say nothing because I don't want to set her off. Besides, it's only a 10 blocks difference...

Mistake #2 - As we drive by the BW's Ocean View at 1447 Ocean, I pointed it out.

"Sir! We've told you at least four times it's NOT 1447 it IS 447!"

"Yes, I just was pointing it out - thinking it strange"..... - (she cuts me off as I try to draw their attention to the 1447 & 447 coincidence)

Both talk at almost the exact same time.

She says, "Just take us to our hotel!"

He says, "Okay, good to know, just in case."

I drive away from the pier 10 blocks North to 447 Ocean. The transition from the business district to a residential district was complete as I pulled in front of 445 Ocean.

I interrupted their conversation and pointed out the window, "This is the 400 block of Ocean but I don't think any of these buildings are the Ocean View Hotel."

She looks outside and says, "I'll call the hotel to get the correct address."

I ask, "Is the phone number you have the same one I have for the Best Western (310) 458-4888?" (Reading off my GPS)

After a grunt she says, "Why didn't you tell me you had the same phone number when we discussed the address? This whole fiasco could of been avoided!"

"I'm sorry. I'll take you back to your hotel."

She pays the fare adding $1.00 for a tip. After I unloaded their bags the gentleman follows me to the drivers seat and hands me $40 saying, "Thanks! And I'm so sorry."

After thanking him I leave.... but my mind recalls a similar event that happened umpteen years ago..... (More on that later)

My answer, “No - But I am reasonably priced...”

This happens all the time! Did you say what you mean or did you mean what you said?

Okay, I understand what they meant to say but I still silently chuckle every time I hear it.

Another one is, "Are you waiting for anyone?" It seems like a straight forward question but it can be tricky.

A simple, ‘Yes’ would not really work here. Nine out of ten people will walk away because what they really meant was; "Are you waiting for someone?" Answering, “yes” means you are not available.

I can’t answer the question with a, ‘Yes – anyone’ because, I promise, if Freddie Kruger shows up at my car door (with or without the mask) carrying a machete (okay even without the machete), he is NOT getting into my cab!

I find the best way to answer the question, "Are you waiting for anyone?" is, "Yes, I was waiting for you!" There is little chance to misunderstand that answer.

Remember, I’m not a writer! But now that I’ve been keeping this blog, I’ve been trying to pay closer attention to my English and the English used around me.

I recently picked up real nice young lady who shared some good advice.

She said, "The English language is rich and beautiful with a multitude of words, each with their own unique meaning. If you can't find just the right words to express yourself, you are lazy!"

She should know she just published her first book 'Hollywood Bowl Nights' and she also blogs here.

PS. I want to say a special 'Thank You' to Treena. She wrote a very nice comment recently and was the very first non cab driver or previous rider to do so.

I was not sure if my stories would be understood or appreciated outside of the cab industry. Thanks Treena!

Cliché alert - Cliché alert

You and I have seen it happen in countless movies while television has used and abused the scenario so many times, you know what is going to happen before the commercial break.

But it really doesn't happen in 'real life' – or does it?

I'm not an ambulance - but the baby just might not wait... Yes, it does happen and yes, it did happen... Well almost.

It is 3:20AM as I pull up to the address that lights up the dispatch screen. A party of two individuals waits curbside with the male waving his arms frantically from side to side signaling me.

He yells, "Taxi, Taxi, Taxi!"

The female stands with both hands cradling her over-sized bulging belly.

The back door started to open even before I had a chance to bring the taxi to a complete stop.

She climbed in first and told him to go around to the other door because she won't be able to slide across the seat.

I heard her say, "Don't forget the bag!" as she closed the door in his face.

He went back and grabbed the bright red and florescent orange bag that lay abandon on the sidewalk.

While he hustled around the car to the other door she said,
"California Hospital - you know where it is right?"

I repeated, "California Hospital?" to verify that I had heard her correctly.

She mistook the questioning tone and said, "Dear God, please – please tell me you know where California Hospital is!"

I said, “Sure, its downtown about 7 1/2 minutes from here." Then I asked,
"Are you okay? Do you need an ambulance?"

The male answered as he climbed in and closed the door, "She's in a bit of pain. We need to get to California Hospital as quickly as possible. Do you know where it is?"

"He knows, he knows - Hold my hand!" she said through tightly clenched teeth.

As I stopped at a red signal about a block away from the freeway, the police pulled up next to the cab. I rolled the window down and said, "I've got a pregnant lady in the back, I'm headed to California Hospital."

I heard the officer say, "Good luck!" as the patrol car took off with its overhead lights now flashing red and blue.

Good luck? I’m confused. Am I supposed to follow them? Did they understand me? I looked both ways and proceed through the still red signal.

The police didn't take the freeway entrance that I had planned to take. If the police were escorting us they should have gotten onto the freeway! Did the police have something else to deal with or did they know a different (or faster?) route?

I couldn't chance it -- I took the freeway.

I hear grunts and groans emitting from the backseat. The distinctive groans are obviously hers and the louder and louder grunts are his.

"Everyone okay back there?" I ask.

She's breathing heavy and doesn't answer. His suffering is either in sympathy or in reality (probably from a newly crushed hand) I'm not sure which it is...

He manages a, "We're okay!" before the next round of grunts and groans.

Within eight minutes of picking them up, all four of us arrived safely at California Hospital; Me, Mommy, Daddy, and the still unborn child.

That's right, the baby had the good instincts to wait and be born at California Hospital instead of the backseat of City7100.

It was close but no cigar - at least not for me...

“Hurry and pay the man!” she said before both rushed away and disappeared behind the sliding glass doors of the Emergency Room.

I quickly followed with the bright red and florescent orange bag that was, once again, momentarily abandoned...

Let's see, I get to sit and watch people in their natural habitat. If you like to people watch - that's great.

Every day I get to meet a bunch of interesting people from just around the corner or from all around the world. If you're a people person - that's great.

If I am tired of one place (and the people that frequent that type of place) I move my office with a simple turn of the ignition key. If you get bored easily - that's great.

Often, I am 'along for the ride' smack in the middle of someone’s adventure of a lifetime (both the good ones and the bad ones). If you enjoy living vicariously - that's great.

If I pick up a dud or I am a dud on a particular day (it happens), they get out of the cab and my life. If you're human and have a pulse - that's great.

Sometimes a trip takes me to a place I have never been before, literally and figuratively. If you enjoy exploring - that’s great.

I get a new audience for old jokes and stories that my friends have heard a thousand times – If you’re like me - that's great.

There are at least 2,299 other 'kind soles' with which I have at least one thing in common and wave as our paths cross, watch my back and/or stop and if I need a hand. If you are ever in need - that's great.

All in all, I guess my life is a lot like yours; Sunshine, Lollipops, and Rainbows as long as you're in love... With what you do, with whom you're with, or best of all - both!

A gem near LAX

Working down by LAX Airport has it's pros and cons. I just found another gem to add to the pro side of the ledger. It's a little Mediterranean Cafe called Gaby's Express located in Marina del Rey.

It has tasty healthy food (their motto is, 'Creating a healthy habit every day') at very reasonable prices. I had a 'Pettite Beef Shawarma' wrap with a creamy spinach salad and drink for only five bucks.

They have a total of four locations (soon to be five) in the area including a full service, fine dining restaurant, at the Venice Pier.

If you are in the area any time soon, check 'em out. You won't be disappointed!

To tip or not to tip - It's a question I'm often asked, especially by those who visit from abroad.

It's a question often asked but difficult to answer. Usually I reply with a joke like, "it's 100%" then after a slight pause add,” up to you..."

But that really is how I feel... Tipping is a way to express appreciation or gratitude towards a service provider.

The taxi industry in LA City is highly regulated. All cabs (legal ones) charge the exact same amount for each mile driven... If a great driver (not that I'm great) and a horrible driver take the same route with the same traffic, the meter will be the same. A tip is a material way to express your appreciation or lack there of. But it doesn’t always work that way….

A short story to illustrate the point.

I picked up a customer at a swanky restaurant in Studio City on Ventura Blvd. He gave me his destination as the Century City Plaza on the Avenue of the Stars.

I headed west on Ventura Blvd to Laurel Canyon and turned South, the opposite of what be had expected."Where are you going? The freeway is the other way," he said.

I replied, "This is the shortcut."

He went off! "I know all about your 'short-cuts' here in LA. I'm from New York City and I know better! Listen, the meter was $55 to get here and that's what I'll pay for you to take me back. Actually we gave a $10 tip (about 18%) so it's $65 and not a dime more...

"That's fine with me," I say. "Go ahead and give me the $65 as a deposit. That way you are covered and you won't have to worry about the meter. Okay?"

He handed me $70 and said, “I don't care about the meter. Give me $5 change."

I said, "No problem. I'm going to put the money right here next to the meter, but I'm going to leave the meter on."

"You can do whatever you want," He said. "But I am NOT paying one dime more!"

We chit chatted a bit more as I continued toward his hotel. I found out that he was here on a business trip and had gone from the hotel to this business dinner with a local associate. That associate had given directions to the previous cab driver and that is why he was so adamant about the amount he was willing to pay.

As I turned into the hotel drop-off area the meter read $31.

"What the F*** is this?" He said as he noticed the hotel, then the meter...

"It's your hotel," I said while trying not to laugh out loud. "I told you it was a short-cut."

I retrieved the money from next to the meter and handed it back to him saying, "Give me my five back and let's start over again."

He smiled and said sorry while he handed me two twenties then asked for $5 back. ($31 fare $4 tip about 11%)

"Sure," I said.

What's a man not to love...

You may have noticed most of my tales involve ladies. The fact is, ladies seem to talk more in City Cab 7100. Surprise, Surprise.

But this taxi tale is about a young Nigerian gentleman.

He said: "If you're a man this is the best weekend ever. Just think you have every sport playing today and tomorrow. To top it off, it's a World Cup year! What's a man not to love...?"

He went on to list all of the sporting events he and his friends had watched so far and continued by listing the remaining weekends schedule. He had opinions about, and high hopes for, each of his favorite teams.

As a Nigerian, he had special wishes for Nigeria's 'football' (I call it soccer) team in the upcoming World Cup.

He said: "I know they won't get through very far but I want them to make us proud and hold their heads up high. They do that and we can all hold our heads high!"

I asked him if he had another team that he would follow if Nigeria was eliminated early. Without pause he said, "Brazil of course! They have a great team and great fans. Have you ever seen the Brazilian chicks cheering in the stands? What's a man not to love...?"

Two Faces of New York

I'm sneaking up on the tail end of what has been, to this point, a great airport shift. Not too busy, not too slow with just the right mix of long and short trips. I've also meet a lot of nice people.

I figure two or three more trips and I'll shift from the airport to downtown for the rest of the night/morning.

Me: Hello. Where can I take you tonight?

Him: Get me the f*•k out of this f@$#*ing airport! This place is a f@$#ing joke - No organization - The flight was 2 1/2 hours late and you lost my luggage. Then I have to wait in a f@$#*ing line to catch a cab!

I lost his luggage?

Me: Did you wait long for a cab?

Him: Didn't you see how many people are waiting in that f@$#*ing line?

Sure I can see how many people are in line but that doesn't tell me how long he waited in line.

Me: Yes, it has been kind of busy tonight. Where can I take you?

Him: Damn, what's with this f@$#*ing backseat? I can barely fit in here with this thing! (He bangs on the barrier)

This guy is going to be a real headache. He's maybe 5'6" and he's complaining about space?

Me: Sorry - I know. With the barrier it can be a tight squeeze. Where can I take you?

Him: I can't even get my f@*&!ing feet in here. Move it forward! (Now he's kicking the barrier)

We arn't even out of the airport and he's giving me grief.

Me: It's not adjustable. It's bolted in a fixed position. Please don't hit or kick the barrier. I can drop you back at the terminal and you can take a town car if you prefer.

Him: You think my company is going pay for a f@$#*ing limo? It's a short trip so I'll just have to put up with it. I can take it.

You can take it? That's not the real question. Can I take you? That's the real question!

Me: Where can I drop you off?

Him: The Holiday Inn, Santa Monica

Great. It is a short ride if it's the Holiday Inn in Santa Monica but not so short if it's the one on Santa Monica Blvd.

I cross my fingers.

Me: Which one? The one in the city of Santa Monica or the one on Santa Monica Blvd?

Him: Damn it. Don't you know where it is? The Holiday Inn iiinnnn Santa Monica!

I smile, it is a short trip. I quickly try to change the subject.

Me: Are you a basketball fan? The game today was....

Him: Don't say a word - don't even give me a f@$#*ing clue! I'm a huge Celtics fan. I've come all the way from New York. avoiding anyone talking about the game. I've got it on Tivo and want to enjoy it when I get home so don't say a f@$#*ing word!

What I jerk. Should I scream it, whisper it or say nothing at all?

Lakers win! Lakers win... They blow out the Celtics 89 to 67! Lakers win! Lakers win!

I drive back to the airport for one last trip. It was still busy so I didn't have to wait long.

Her: Hi. I'm going to the Hollywood Historic Hotel on Melrose Blvd. I'm sorry but I don't have the cross street.

I don't recognize that hotel but the accent is a different story.

Me: The Hollywood Historic Hotel? I'm not really familiar with that one but I can look it up on my GPS.

Her: I have the address, it's 5162 Melrose. Does that help?

I can now place the address in my mind, just as surely as I can place her accent.

I cross my fingers.

Me: Yes that helps a lot. I know exactly where it is. Where are you from?

(Please no, please no, please no)

Her: New York.

Oh No no no no no not again.

But there was a big difference between her and him. Just as quickly as the first New Yorker had ticked me off, this New Yorker had won me over!

She was great! She was a true beauty inside and out. She had this certain way about her.

I don't know if she had sensed the frustration from my previous trip or if her ingratiating ways just came naturally. She had a great smile and an infectious giggle that made my night.

We started talking about what had brought her to LA and that turned in to talking about her dream. No she doesn't want to be an actress but rather find her fame and fortune in the world of fashion.

Halfway through the trip she remarked how she's had many great conversations with New York cabbies. It's easy to see why!

As we talk she leans close to the window in the center of the barrier. Road noise makes it difficult to hear but this gesture makes me feel like she doesn't want to miss a single word of our chat.

I heard her yawn a few times, so I appoligized for being such a bore.

"You're not boring me," She said. "Its just that I got on the plane after a long day of work and flew six hours to get here. I'm tired."

The trip with one New Yorker was short - but way too long. The other was a bit longer - but way too short.

What is there to do in LA?

Southern California is a tourist mecca for many obvious reasons. Sun and fun are two of the best. Great weather and hundreds (if not thousands) of places to enjoy.

Yesterday I was actually asked, "Besides the obvious, is there really anything to do in LA?"

Well let's see?

The list of amusement parks & entertainment centers seems endless.

Here are a few I have enjoyed.

I've experienced many of the most popular tourist stops including Disneyland, Knotts Berry Farm, Universal Studios, Magic Mountain, and Sea World. Sorry, no kids so I've missed out on Lego Land, but it still might be fun someday.

I've walked Hollywood's Walk of Fame hunting for my favorite star' star.

I've explored Griffith Park and searched the galaxy for the terrestrial stars at the Griffith Park Observatory.

I've climbed on and explored the century old trains at Travel Town. I've ridden the miniature train that loops around the pony rides.

I've peddled a tandem bike on the boardwalk (it's really concrete) at Venice Beach. Gawked at those gawking at me - people watching in LA hits a different level, it's interactive.

I've kissed a special someone atop the ferris wheel on the Santa Monica Pier and shopped at the Third St. Promenade.

I've been sunburned on the beaches of Malibu, Santa Monica, Balboa, and Dana Point.... Three words --- USE SUN SCREEN!!

I've admired countless artistic treasures on display at world renowned museums like the Getty (and the Villa), the Autry, MOCA, Natural History Museum, Museum of Science and Industry, LA Contemptary Art and
the Norton Simon Museum.

I've watched ballet at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. Listened to the LA Philharmonic at both the Hollywood Bowl and Disney Concert Hall.

I've sung along (to myself) to concerts held at the Universal Amphitheater, the Greek, The Kodak and Nokia.

I've laughed at comedy clubs including HaHa, the Comedy Store and Laugh Factory. I haven't made it to The Jon Lovitz Comedy Club at Universal City Walk.

I tried, but failed, to figure out the tricks at the Magic Castle.

I've been in the "studio audience" as Hollywood creates its own type of magic. I've watched tapings of Two and a Half Men, The Big Bang Theory, Jimmy Kimmel Live and Wheel of Fortune.

I've decorated floats for the annual Tournament of Roses Parade and then watched the parade make it's way from the Tournament House down the 3.5 mile route. I've been to the Rose Bowl Game twice.

Did I mention any of the plays I’ve enjoyed at the Pantages Theater or Deaf West?

I've cheered the Dodgers, the Lakers, both USC and UCLA, but not for the Clippers or Kings. Of course there are other sporting events in LA to check out.

I've communed with nature at Descanso Gardens, The Arboretum & Botanic Gardens, The Huntington Library, and the La Brea Tar Pits.& Page Museum.

I've feed animals at the LA Zoo and watched the scariest creatures of all make there 1:45 AM exodus from various nightclubs and bars throughout Hollywood and Downtown, Yes, I know to never feed those animals!

I've hiked the trails of Eaton Canyon and taken the Palm Springs Arial Tramway to the tip top of Mount San Jacinto.

I've been overwhelmed standing in the midst of acres of tulips in full bloom outside of the Dutch community of Solvang. I just missed the hundreds of acres of assorted spring flowers allowed to bloom and go to
seed, but the resulting fragrance will live in my senses forever.

I've pulled straw from unmentionable places after a moonlight hey ride through the Apple Orchids of Oak Glen.
