Getting ready for Hurricanes!

Stay informed about hurricanes and maintain a level of preparedness. Clear your yard of loose debris, trim back limbs of trees and bring in furniture, potted plants, and other outdoor items that can turn into projectiles during strong wind events.
Be prepared the next two months are typically the busiest time in the hurricane season around the Caribbean and Florida. Make sure your flashlights are operational, your generator is working, have a battery operated radio and or TV, you have plenty of drinking water stored and a first aide kit (with bandages, peroxide, alcohol wipes, antibiotic ointment, gauze, tape, and pain killers is a good idea), non perishable food (such as peanut butter, granola bars, canned beans, Spaghtti-O's, beef jerky, crackers or bread are good ideas- especially if you have small children) Make sure you have some emergency cash on hand and pet food for your pets. If you have an interior closet or bathroom that you can use as a safe room, make sure it is cleaned out and accessible in case of an emergency. Above and beyond anything stay safe! Stay away from downed power lines, do not venture out into the storm.

Flamingo Gardens Events

Flamingo Gardens will be hosting Mangomania on July 16th from 9:30-4:00PM.
The garden shop will be featuring fresh Mangos for sale as well as Mango trees and fresh sugar cane juice! The Garden Shop will have several varieties of Mangos to sample and select from, as well as some of their favorite Mango recipes, like Mango Salsa, to taste and then take home to make for yourselves.

Stop by and see fresh Guarapa de Cana, or sugar cane juice, being processed. As a special treat for your sweet tooth, try this liquid tropical confection or a fresh Mango Smoothie, and a portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Flamingo Gardens horticulture department!

**Flamingo Gardens is a "not for profit organization" and relies on donations to operate. They don't receive any federal or local aid. Your contributions are greatly appreciated. The gardens are a bit of paradise here in Davie. That need your help (especially in this slow economy!)

Flamingo Gardens, A Paradise Found in Davie Florida

Flamingo Gardens, located on Flamingo Road in Davie (between route 595 and Griffin Road on the east side) is a paradise for nature lovers among us. South Florida's unique tropical and sub-tropical plant and animal life can be observed on 60 beautiful acres. The botanical garden and wildlife sanctuary have so many sights and sounds to fill your senses; the Wray botanical collection, a flamingo filled lagoon, a free flight aviary, the historic 1930's Wray home, and 200 year old Live Oaks on its ridge. It's a place for children and adults to enjoy shady, canopied walks among champion trees that have been growing on this location for centuries. It's a place to learn about south Florida's unique ecosystem by knowledgeable tram operators who drive you through various native habitats (wetlands, hammock, etc). Have your camera ready and be on the lookout for turtles, iguanas, roseate spoonbills, great white egrets, ibis, great blue herons, and many other spectacular creatures that call the nature here home.
Three times each day, naturalists present shows at the wildlife pavilion featuring different species of owls, falcons, snakes, or hawks. Children ooh and ahhh at the presentations, they are educational and informative. The naturalists teach young and old alike how to take care of our fragile ecosystem and appreciate the creatures that live among us. Any time you visit, you are likely to see cameras set up on tri pods, or camera phones taking a quick shot. There are so many colorful plants in the garden and natural vistas, it is a photographers dream. It's nice to know there is such a well preserved living museum in our wonderful town. It is truly a special place.
To fully appreciate Flamingo Gardens in all the seasons, a membership is well worth the price. Membership allows unlimited visits to the gardens, discounts at the gift shop, a member's day plant giveaway, as well as reciprocity with some other well known gardens throughout Florida and the country.

Battens Farmer's Market set to re-open on May 27th 2011

Batten's Farmers Market, a fabulous find in Davie, sadly closed its doors in 2008. We are happy to share the news that Batten's 10 Acre site is set to reopen in conjunction with Davie Agri-tourism center which will include nearly 175 local Broward farmers that will be selling fruits and vegetables at the 5151 Davie Road location Some of the local produce will be organically grown. There are plans for a U-pick area for berries and a small petting zoo. There will also be a good selection of fresh homemade goods like specialty sauces, jams, pies and soups. Fresh smoothies and milkshakes will also be sold.
On May 27th, there will be a ceremonial ribbon cutting by Mayor Judy Paul as well as activities and giveaways at the location. A soft opening is planned for May 16th.

Registration begins there at 8AM -

Kayaking in South Florida

There are many great locations around South Florida to Kayak and Canoe. Two of our favorites are Ann Kolb Nature Center in Dania and Oleta River State Park in North Miami Beach. Ann Kolb is where we first got introduced to Kayaking as a young family. Ann Kolb has a concession at West Lake Park with affordable Kayak rentals (check before you go... rates used to be $7/hour may have gone up since last we went). At Oleta, the rentals are through Blue Moon Outdoor Center Please click on the link to see their rates on rentals. Oleta is a bigger State park with more than 10 miles of off a 1200 ft long beach, fishing pier, 9 pavillions with water, the largest with electricity, Oleta has something for almost anyone. People with medical needs...
*Residents relying on home medical treatment requiring electricity- such as home oxygen, ventilators, and breathing treatments- should make prior arrangements to acquire battery backups, generators, or should consider having a plan to evacuate to a loci\ation outside the threat area. Talk to your doctor now to determine the best course of action for your needs. To register and arrange transportation for a Special-Needs Shelter, call Broward County Elderly and Veterans Services Division at 954-537-2888 or TTY 954-537-2882.

Personal Safety...
*Use portable generators cautiously. Make sure they are operated only outdoors in a welll-ventilated area. Refuel a generator only after it has cooled. Do not connect a generator to your home's electrical system except through an approved transfer switch installed in compliance with the local electrical code. * Permanent standby generators require a permit. Please call the Building Department for information at 954-797-1111, or go to Building Permits under Links for Residents on the front page of the Davie website.

*Before operating a chain saw, read your owner's manual. Make sure that your chain saw has these features and that the features are working: chain brake (manual or inertia), chain catcher, working safety throttle switch, working on/off switch, and spark arrester. Make sure the carburetor is properly adjusted by a trained servicing dealer. Fill a gas-powered chain saw when the engine is cool. Carry the chain saw with the engine off.*
*Assemble a first-aid kit for your home and one for each car. Suggested for your kit are various-sized bandages, sterile dressings and pads, antiseptic wipes, medical grade non-latex gloves, adhesive tape, antibacterial ointment, cold pack scissors, and tweezers. Do not forget to prepare in advance an ample supply of prescription; as well as non-prescripion medication (i.e., aspirins, Tylenol, etc.).

Fire Safety...
*Use a flashlight or a batttery-operated lantern if power is lost. Do not use candles for emergency lighting. Candles and kerosene lanterns are fire hazards. Turn off major appliances if powewr is lost. They could overload electric lines when power is restored, causing another outage or causing a fire if things are left on top of a stove.

Water...
Have enough water to last for a minimum of 7 days. Have one gallon of water per day for each person. Do not drink water from the faucet until you have been officially notified that it is not contaminated. If you must use tap water, do one f the following: apply 8 drops of unscented household bleach per gallon (check with your doctor to ensure that you do not have a condition that the bleach would affect) or boil the water.

Roadway Safety...
Stay off the roads right after a hurricane. Debris and electrical lines can be deadly. Especially stay off the roadways at night when there are no streetlights. Dark roadways just make the situation worse. Treat traffic signals that are out as if they are 4-way stop signs. Courtesy and patience are our best friend during these trying times.

Equestrian

Other elements of Davie's western theme include a strong equestrian community, which enjoys the town's unique "Open Space" policy. This voter-approved idea protects wide expanses of green, which assures pathways connecting parks and nature preserves, to help let residents stay touch with nature. The occasional citrus grove can still be found, though many of those still standing are sorely overgrown.

And some of Broward County's most pristine lands, such as the magnificent oak hammock at the county's highest elevation in Tree Tops Park, are found in the town limits.

Many Davie residents still wear the cowboy hats of their Florida frontiersmen forefathers, although the town is no longer at the western edge of the horizon. Southwest Ranches and Weston have pushed back the boundaries of civilization even closer to the Everglades, making Davie's location more central to Broward's urban life. The town's establishment as an educational center reflects that and lends sophistication to the town’s otherwise rustic core.

Decades older than many of its neighboring cities, Davie has managed to maintain it's family-oriented residential demeanor without giving too much away to progress and development. With an estimated population of 92,000, it's still the small town that other communities only claim to be. Of course, with annexations like those incorporating United Ranches and Pine Island Ridge, other communities are literally becoming Davie.
