Report Shows City of Mobile Spending Lower on General Government, Higher on Public Safety
A report from the Alabama Policy Institute, a non-profit research and education organization, shows that Mobile's spending is spending on general government is comparatively lower, while funding for public safety was above average.

The report compared Mobile with nine other cities of similar size around the southeast (Montgomery, Richmond, VA, Shreveport, LA, Augusta, GA, Irving, TX, Ft. Wayne, IN, Lubbock, TX, Durham, NC, and Jackson, MS). What it found was that Mobile spent the second-lowest on general government (Mayor and Council offices, accounting, human resources, administrative services, etc.) and the fourth-most on public safety personnel (police officers, firefighters, code enforcement, animal control, etc.).

"I think this report does a good job of laying out what we have been saying for years," said Mayor Sam Jones. "As our resources went down with the national recession, we focused our efforts on public safety. We have cut back everywhere else that we

Mobile Fire-Rescue Takes Part in National EMS Week
The American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) kicked off the 40th annual Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Week starting May 19th with events in communities across the nation, as well as several national events organized around the theme "EMS: One Mission. One Team." EMS providers include paramedics, emergency medical technicians, first responders, firefighters and police, some paid, some volunteer.

In the spirit of this year's EMS Week theme - One Mission. One Team. - U.S. Fire Administrator Ernest Mitchell emphasizes the number one mission of the EMS team: take every measure to ensure your health and safety, not just for EMS week, but throughout the year.

As part of National EMS Week, Mobile Fire-Rescue invites the public to visit their neighborhood fire station, see the equipment used in medical care and get their blood pressure checked.

Here are a few other ways people can participate in EMS activities at the local level:

Market on the Hill Starts Thursday
This coming Thursday, May 23, at 2 p.m., Mayor Sam Jones will help open The Market on the Hill at its new location. This year, the University of South Alabama and Regions Bank are letting us put on the Market at the corner of Old Shell Road and University Boulevard. We have 15 of our regular Market on the Square vendors already signed up and a number of the Arts Council artisans will be participating, too. Just like at the Market on the Square, you can listen to local musicians while you shop.

Come pick up locally grown produce, seafood, soap, and plants, along with a variety of hand crafted merchandise. With the exception of July 4, The Market on the Hill will go from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. every Thursday afternoon from May 23 thru July 25. We look forward to seeing friends, old and new, at The Market on the Hill.

Mayor Jones, Chief Williams Announce Police Fleet Expansion
The additional penny sales tax levied last year by city officials has increased the Mobile Police Department's fleet of motorcycles by seven, an acquisition that enhances the department's traffic division.

On Wednesday, Mobile Mayor Sam Jones and Police Chief Micheal T. Williams dedicated the 2013 Harley-Davidson Electra Glide Police Edition high speed motorcycles, which cost the city $184,281.30. The funds come from the city's capital fund budget, created via city council resolution.

"We are happy to incorporate these state-of-the-art motorcycles into the police department's fleet," said Mayor Jones. "It has been a while since this fleet has been upgraded. Our goal in advocating for the penny was to improve services to the City of Mobile, specifically through Public Safety."

The new motorcycles will increase the police department's fleet to 26. "These motorcycles are a welcome addition to the department's fleet," said Chief Williams. Mayor Jones Cuts the Ribbon on Mobile's First Publix
Mayor Sam Jones was joined by company executives, local leaders, and hundreds of eager shoppers as they cut the ribbon at Mobile's first Publix supermarket. The store, located at the corner of Hillcrest and Collage Hill Roads, opened at 8 a.m. on Wednesday, April 24, 2013.

As part of the ribbon cutting ceremony, Mayor Jones presented a resolution to the family of Gerri Cox. Ms. Cox earned the nickname of "Ms. Publix" for her efforts to bring a Publix to Mobile. Sadly, she passed away recently after an illness. Company officials thanked her family, and recognized her contributions.

April's Firefighter of the Month Named
Congratulations to Firefighter Gabe Sewell, who has one year and four months on the department, for being selected as the April Firefighter of the Month on Wednesday, April 24 at the Spot of Tea on Dauphin Street downtown.

On January 25th around 12:30 a.m., Gabe M. Sewell was traveling down Cody Road when he saw a tire in the middle of the road. As Sewell got out of his car to remove the tire he saw two people outside asking for help. After seeing the bystanders he noticed a male lying supine in the driveway of a residence. The patient had possibly been ejected from a vehicle.

Sewell grabbed a pair of gloves from his car, told one of the bystanders to initiate 911 and the other to look in and around the car to see if anyone else was injured while he held manual c-spine and started his rapid assessment.

Mobile Police Taking Back Unwanted Prescription Drugs
On Saturday, April 27, 2013 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., the Mobile Police Department and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) will give the public another opportunity to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs.

The public is invited to bring medications for disposal to Mobile Police Headquarters, located at 2460 Government Street. The service is free and anonymous - no questions asked.

Last September, Americans turned in 244 tons of prescription drugs at over 5,200 sites operated by the DEA and its thousands of state and local law enforcement partners. In its five previous Take Back events, DEA and its partners took in over 2 million pounds - over a thousand tons - of pills.
This initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue.
Mobile Celebrates 200 Years as an American City
This Saturday, April 13, the Honorable Juan M. Molina Acting Ambassador for Spain to the United States will be in Mobile to help celebrate the 200th anniversary of Mobile becoming an American City. Mr. Molina has served his country in many important posts including Ambassador to Swaziland, Mozambique and Ambassador-at-large for Southern African Affairs.

Two hundred years ago, American forces under the command of General James Wilkinson marched into Mobile and demanded the surrender of Fuerte Carlota from the Spanish. Seeing the mass of guns before him, the Spanish commandant agreed to leave the City; and without a shot being fired Mobile became an American City.

At 3:00 on April 13, the historic Spanish Flag which has flown over Fuerte Carlota (Fort Conde) since March 13, will be lowered and presented to Mr. Molina. Following this Mayor Sam Jones will accept the City from Spain and the historic Star Spangled Banner of 15 stars and 15 stripes will be raised.
