Great Plants and Flowers for South Florida Gardens

The Bromeliad to the left is a native of Brazil and this time of year (late August-early September) has very unique bright pink flowers with purple tips that are simply spectacular. Quiet a show stopper.
Almost every day, I get asked by passerby what this fabulously showy bromeliad is called. It's latin name is Billbergia Pyramidalis. This hot pink Bromeliad is extremely drought tolerant and requires almost no care. It does well in shade, part shade and even bright sun. Bright sun is the least favorable condition, and the plant will survive and flower. It sends off several pups a year and can create a spectacular colony ground cover. You can also attach this bromeliad to a palm or oak and it will do very well. The plant does well with rain water and tree matter that falls, decomposes and collects in the vase of the plant. Highly recommended for Southeast Florida. Beware the leaves are extremely sharp, handle with care.

Another shrub in our garden that does extremely well with little to no maintainance is the Mexican Honeysuckle or (Justicia Spicigera). Mexican Honeysuckle is a small shrub that isn't fussy, blooms most of the year, and is attractive to hummingbirds. With yellow-green leaves and bright orange flowers, Mexican honeysuckle grows 2 to 4 feet tall and spreads 3 to 6 feet wide. The leaves become larger in partial shade locations. Clusters of bright orange, narrowly tubular flowers appear throughout the year. Our Mexican Honeysuckle is out by the pool where it gets full sun. It is very drought tolerant, but looks better and grows larger when given afternoon rains in the south Florida summer. It has a moderate growth rate and is not fussy about soil.
The plant pictured on the left is a very showy and typical drought tolerant Bougainvillea plant around South Florida, Texas, and Arizona. The hot pink variety on the left is called Miami Pink Bougainvillea. It is a vigorous grower and needs little attention once established. We have ours up against the fence. The only drawback to this plant are the huge thorns that it bears. It flowers a good portion of the year and likes direct sunlight. I trim it back so that it has a large twisted trunk heavily flowered on the top giving it a Bonsai appearance.
I think I'm done writing and then I go out to the garden and I see more plants that are extremely easy to care for, drought tolerant, and like full sun.
The beautiful Blue Plumbago (or latin: Plumbago auriculata) thrives in the South Florida heat and sun.
It flowers non-stop and can grow up to ten feet. I trim mine to about 2-3 feet into a hedge. They are truly beautiful and the butterflies love them. They pare well with bromeliads or varigated Aboricola.

Last but certainly not least is one of my favorites-it does not flower but is extremely aromatic (and a joy to cook with). This plant is Rosemary. I love having Rosemary in the garden, not only is it aromatic it is also drought tolerant. I adore the scent when the breeze blows through (especially in the evening). I also enjoy the structural appearance in the garden.
Rosemary can get quite large, I have seen it used in upscale hotel landscaping and in flower beds in Arizona and southern Utah.

Get ready for Hurricanes!

Preparedness is the key to riding out a hurricane. Keep yourself informed of storm progress. Make sure your house is stocked with plenty of drinking water, easy to prepare non-perishable food (such as peanut butter, bread, granola bars, canned beans, spaghetti-o's, nuts, juice boxes, etc- especially helpful if you have young children). Make sure your flashlights are working, and your battery operated radio or TV. If you have a generator- make sure it starts and has fuel, also fill your propane tanks( you may be BBQing all that meat in the freezer if the power goes out for an extended time) Get some beer to go with, you might as well enjoy the company of your neighbors while cleaning out your freezer..Gas up your vehicles, in case you have to evacuate. Get some emergency cash on hand. If the power goes out for an extended time..there will not be access to ATMs. Secure large objects in your yard, and bring in anything that could potentially blow and turn into a dangerous projectile. Keep a well stocked first aide kit in the house and secure important documents like insurance policies and banking information as well as titles to property in a dry container or safe box. If you have an interior closet or bathroom, make sure it is decluttered so that it could be used as a safe room if necessary. Lastly, don't forget to have supplies for your pets. Above all, stay safe. Stay inside until the worst is over. Do not go near downed power lines or try to drive in hurricane force wind and rain.

Beach Days

Today we went to Hollywood Beach. Pulled up to the North Beach parking lot to find it locked up and closed. Thought it was odd, being President's day and winter break for half the country..drove on to find an elusive parking space. Parked a few streets down. Set up our camp on the beach, had a sandwich, an orange and a bottle of water. Decided to walk down to the normally open and clean public bathrooms to find them locked up tight as well. Asked the homeless man and woman sitting under the canopy what was going on and they informed me that Hollywood does not open the parking lot or restrooms on Holidays! Why? To save money? Could this be true? Turns out it is not completely true...it is Broward County Parks that is closed on President's Day...Aren't holidays when working folk go to the parks?
The lot is a paid lot...Heck, Hollywood and/ or Broward County Parks could probably charge extra and have a full lot on a beautiful February long holiday weekend day.
Heck, I'll stand there all day for a percentage charging people to park their cars...What are they thinking?

Hungry? Well, more good news..the concession stand is not open either! What a loss to the beach-goers who are looking to pay their hard earned money on parking and food..What a loss to Broward County/ Hollywood coffers! I couldn't find anything specific on the website as to why they weren't open today today..here is a link to their site: North Beach Park

The park is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays November -March according to the website..this doesn't make much sense either considering it is the height of vacation season here. It would make more sense to close the parks in the summer months/hurricane season when it is unbearably hot and humid to sit outside…This time of year North Beach Park is a beautiful spot with nice facilities and a pristine beach. The Turtle Cafe concession is decent and reasonably priced. The bathrooms are the best kept on the beach. Outsource to a private vendor on Holidays, when the beach is most full, let someone benefit from what seems to be senseless bureaucracy.

This is a fantastic find! Whether you are looking to rent or purchase a unit, Villas de Tuscany located on the border of Sunrise, Davie and Weston offers the best of both worlds. The development is located within the very desirable Country Isles Elementary School district (Weston A rated school). The construction is top notch concrete block. The units are spacious. Winter Gardening in South Florida

One of the many joys of living in South Florida is the ability to grow your own veggies most of the year. Last year, my husband and I built a raised bed garden behind our garage.
The raised beds make tending the garden a pleasure. A nurseryman recommended a book to me called the Square Foot Garden. It is a fairly simple concept. The beds raised ten inches or so are easier to weed and take care of. The ideal width of the raised box is anywhere from 2-4 feet, depending if you have access to the whole perimeter. If you do have access four feet is great. If not two feet is the way to go. The logic being that your arms can generally only reach comfortably about 2 feet into the garden. Our garden gets morning sun and afternoon shade which is ideal. We have had great luck with many herbs and some veggies. Green beans, collards, arugula, sugar snap peas, beets, red leaf and green leaf lettuce, parsley, cilantro, oregano, garlic chives, rosemary, basil and lemon grass do very well in our garden. The Collards and arugula produce year round. The arugula will even grow wild in the yard if left alone. The rosemary, lemon grass, garlic chives, basil and oregano also produce year round. Our new favorite beverage is lemon grass tea..very refreshing. I hope you will experiment with your own raised bed garden. There are many benefits. It is a healthier, less expensive alternative to store bought food. It is great physical activity that the whole family can enjoy. It brings you joy to see the fruits of your labor. You will be getting the freshest food without the added pesticides or irradiation that a great deal of our food is exposed to. Happy gardening!

Take it from me, a native New Englander with 4 years of high school spanish under my belt. You need Spanish to communicate effectively down here. Especially, if you dare venture into Miami. It is another world. I like diversity. This is not the problem. I just wish I had a better grip on this language. Rosetta Stone is coming to my rescue. Free Fun in the Sun at Hollywood Beach

Looking for something to do this Weekend?

Hands down the very best free fun activity you can enjoy with your family is a quick trip to Hollywood Beach. My family and friends have been going for years and it only gets better with time. The kids can never get bored of digging in the sand, making sand castles, body surfing, skim boarding, boogie boarding, snorkeling, shell collecting. We all love to play football, paddleball and catch on the sand. There is nothing quite like it. The North Beach section of Hollywood Beach is our favorite. Generally less crowded, arrive early and you can easily find a one dollar per hour meter on one of the many side streets leading down to the beach and enjoy the room to spread out, picnic and play games. If you do not have luck with the meter, there is a very large beach parking lot at Sheridan and A1A which at press time is $7 for all day parking $5 after 3pm til dusk. At the south end of that lot, by the observation tower, there is a little restaurant called the Turtle Cafe and decently clean public bathrooms.

We live in a place where accessing a resort quality beach is easy year round. Hollywood beach has won the prestigious Blue Wave award by the non-profit Clean Beaches Council.
According to the Clean Beaches website:

Myung Ga Tofu & Barbecue - 3 stars for Korean Restaurant in Weston, Florida

We've been dying to try Myung Ga Tofu & Barbecue all we hear from friends is how absolutely fabulous it is. This weekend we will see for ourselves. It is located right in town at

A friend brought over some Kim chee for us to try a couple of weeks ago and we loved the unique texture and spiciness of it.

I have a feeling I will love Myung Ga Tofu & Barbecue because I love authentic international food, especially the varied seasonings. Exotic spices are something everyone should try..mix it up a bit..get out of your comfort zone. In my humble opinion, it makes for a more interesting life experience. After all, you know what they say: "Variety is the Spice of Life."

I have recently read that the Doral location of this restaurant has closed. I hope the Weston location stays around for a while.

We finally went last weekend. First impression, the place was pretty busy with mostly Korean customers... a good sign when seeking authentic cuisine. The restaurant was nicely decorated and the waitstaff wore traditional Korean clothing. At first, I felt a little intimidated by the menu because I've never experienced Korean food before. Our waiter wasn't overly anxious to help us out with any kind of brief introduction to the cuisine (an introduction would have been greatly appreciated and probably would have made for a 4 star experience). I attributed this to our waiter's limited English which was a little difficult to understand.
My 12 year old daughter enjoyed a big bowl of dumpling soup. For appetizers, we tried a Kim-chee pancake, pumpkin soup; both were delicious. For entrees, we enjoyed the fabulous short ribs and a squid dish (that was a little too spicy- I think we said medium..next time I will say low spice) The entrees came with many small sides: rice, ice burg lettuce salad, seaweed salad, beansprouts, cucumber salad and potato salad. Overall, Myung ga Tofu and Barbecue was a nice diversion from the ordinary. 3/4 stars.

Sheinberg Family YMCA in Weston, Florida is a fantastic family friendly fitness find!

The kids were volunteering at a family event at the Sheinberg Family YMCA in Weston.

While picking up the kids, we decided to tour the facility. It is impressive. All very modern, clean, light and bright. The family center is fabulous. They have 2 full size basketball courts, teen center with fusball table and video games, family room with rock climbing wall, cycling room, aerobics studio. The gymnasium is very well equipped with modern treadmills, eliptical machines, bicycles, freeweights, and Nautilus equipment circuit. The staff is very knowledgeable and friendly.

We joined on the spot. The registration fee was waived that day. Very often they have this promotion or one like it...so if a special is not going on, ask for it or wait for a deal.

You can go on line and get a free 7 day pass if you would like to try out the club. I don't think it will disappoint. In my opinion, it is much cleaner and more modern than many fitness centers in the area. The facility offers an aquatics area that has an Olympic Size competition pool, a family recreation area and a zero depth entry family plunge pool. The Weston Y offers swim classes, water fitness classes, CPR training, first aid training, and have competitive aquatics (including water polo and several swim teams).

My teenage children love it. They ask to go every other day. I'm happy that we have found a family activity that bonds us and makes us stronger both physically and as a family.

One of the Best Restaurants in Florida

Last weekend, I had the pleasure of dining with friends at Edwardo de San Angel in Fort Lauderdale. Wow! The food, service and atmosphere was nothing short of amazing.

The restaurant is on the expensive side, but as we found, worth every penny. Extraordinary service, spectacular cuisine, and an ambiance that takes you on a quick jaunt to an authentic gourmet restaurante en Mexico (no small feat, considering it is located in a strip mall on East Commercial Blvd.) not far from the beach. The waitstaff is top notch(especially Rafael) and super professional (something very difficult to find in South Florida).

We started with two appetizers a Herb oil grilled Cactus paddle bocadillo filled with an achiote marinated pork medalion accented with guajillo chile sauce and a Roasted Poblano pepper stuffed with Fresh Florida Bluecrab pickled jalapeno peppers, green olives, tomatoes and sweet roasted onions. The appetizers alone would have been a satisfying meal. We teamed that with our Rafael's recommended 16 yr old Don Jacobo Gran Reserva Wine- which was one of the most smooth and satisfying reds I've ever had the pleasure of sipping. Definitely a special occasion type of dinner.

My entree was the Pan Seared beef tenderloin filet mignon stuffed with stewed roasted poblano peppers and sweet onions and goat and monterey jack cheese. Served with a sauce of smoked chipotle chiles spiked with puebla style mole. A memorable meal..

Almost forgot to mention the Cilantro soup which was divine. Except for overeating that night...I wouldn't change a thing...It's difficult to just have a little-it's soooo good..but probably we could afford to go more often if we did.

I am not alone in my opinion, on the way out we all admired the wall of awards the restaurant has been honored with.

Reservations are recommended..it is an intimate place with a total of about 10 tables in 3 rooms.

Many Weston neighborhoods provide scenic walkways along streets, with tree-lined sidewalks frequently populated by joggers, bikers and stroller-pushing parents. Several parks are provided for various types of fun and relaxation, from passive Peace Mound Park at Weston and Indian Trace roads — with a path-lined lake, benches, pavilions and playground, gentle hills and towering trees — to Tequesta Trace Park, dedicated to sports with baseball, softball, soccer and football fields, plus a roller rink and children’s playground, also on Indian Trace.

Heron Park, next to Country Isles Elementary, is devoted primarily to sports activities, while Village Park at Arvida Parkway and Country Isles Road is a playground. Oscar Wind Park on New River Circle in nearby Sunrise offers playground, ballfields and volleyball courts, while Markham Park, in nearby Sunrise at State Road 84 and Weston Road, is a full-scale county park with wilderness camping area, pools, and playgrounds. Favorite activities at Markham include the Target Range, Fox Observatory, and an area dedicated to model plane enthusiasts. There are also two boat ramps popular with Everglades fisherfolk, and jet skiers.

Several other neighborhoods boast their own small parks as well, including Windmill Ranches and Emerald Estates, the newly developed parcel south of Arvida Parkway. Gator Run Elementary and Eagle Point Elementary both have neighborhood sports parks as well.

Weston Regional Park is now in full swing, offering several baseball fields, hockey rinks and basketball courts as well as soccer and football fields. The park is the new home to the

West Broward YMCA. The soccer fields are home to the Weston Soccer Club (http://www.westonsoccer.net/) A concession stand and tot lot provide everything but shade at this sports park on the edge of the Everglades at 20200 Saddle Club Road.

The local movie theater, Weston8 is a great little theater to see new releases, also nearby is: the 20-screen Muvico to the south in Davie at Sheridan and I75, and another mega-theater just northeast of Weston at Sawgrass Mills Mall. A $5 theater can be found about five miles east at Nob Hill Road and State Road 84.

Weston residents can join the Athletic Club for fitness facilities, located at the Weston Community Center which also offers interesting classes in a variety of subjects ranging from drama to computers, plus pool, tennis courts, and band shell. A bit northwest finds The Bonaventure Town Center, which offers pools, indoor skating rink, fitness center, racquetball and tennis courts plus meeting rooms. Cliff Drysdale’s Weston Tennis Center can be found at Bonaventure Boulevard and Racquet Club Road.

In the mood to relax?? Check out the newly renovated 48,000 sq/ft Elizabeth Arden Red Door Lifestyle Spa at the gorgeously redone Hyatt Regency Bonaventure Resort. The resort has a sumptuous tropical pool and 2 top rated 18 hole golf courses.

Weston’s business community has grown dramatically as well, helped along, no doubt by the tireless efforts of the Weston Chamber of Commerce, whose purpose is to help build and strengthen the underlying economic fabric of the community. Headed by President Jack Miller, the organization boasts more than 600 members at this time. Miller has helped several businesses make the decision to select a Weston address.

Other businesses anchoring the Weston Parks of Commerce along Arvida Parkway are Levi Strauss, Nabisco and the Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel, which has a satelitte office and distribution center here. The United States Post Office and the Broward County Library also have Weston Branches.

Weston’s business community has grown dramatically as well, helped along, no doubt by the tireless efforts of the Weston Chamber of Commerce, whose purpose is to help build and strengthen the underlying economic fabric of the community. Basic needs can be met quickly at several Weston shopping centers, some anchored by a supermarket. Publix can be found at Country Isles Plaza on Weston Road, which also hosts an Eckerd’s Drugs, Ace Hardware, several restaurants, salons and specialty shops.

Another Publix/Eckerd’s center is located at Indian Trace and Saddleclub roads.The new Weston Commons is a high end beautiful, Publix anchored life style center completed in 2005. It includes both national and local retailer including many restaurants, boutiques, speciality, and service providers.

Walgreens is always busy at Bonaventure Boulevard just south of Arvida Parkway(renamed Royal Palm Boulevard). Two Blockbuster video stores, two Baskin-Robbins Ice Cream Parlors and a Dairy Queen, and let’s not forget Ben and Bob’s Gourmet Market to add that special touch to favorite recipes — everything within a few moments reach.

Many congregations began meeting as small groups in living rooms, schools and strip center storefronts. One church grew so quickly, it's members convened at the local movie theater for services each week before a house of worship could be built. Orthodox congregations, interdenominational and non-denominational groups can all be found in or near Weston.

Perhaps thanks to its extremely diverse population, Weston residents have learned to work and live together quite comfortably. Members of the B'hai faith have organized a Unity in Diversity group which meets regularly and plans social events to help neighbors get to know and appreciate one another's differences. B'Nai Aviv and First Baptist congregations share a parking lot -- and sometimes help each other out by sharing synagogue and church when worship services overflow.
