We had our nicest weather and 90+ people ran or walked the course yesterday morning with the funds raised going to the Iowa City Free Medical Clinic. I do not have an exact total but we believe that over $4,500 was raised after expenses. That is also a record. I especially thank Susan Graves and the senior class for their efforts.

Also, yesterday City High was represented well by Melanie Holman (5th), Jill Stephenson (7th), Cassidy White (8th) and Emily Fagan (10th) as they were the top finishers of the Southeast team at the Senior Spotlight meet in Ames. Girls from all 4 classes (1A-4A) ran on each of the four teams: NW, SW, NE and SE. More than 60 of the states best seniors participated. Melanie finished just behind All-State performer Maddy Becker of CR Washington (NW) and our other girls were close behind. This bodes well as these same girls will be joined by Rebecca Rethwisch, Erin Danielson and Meg Richardson next weekend at Sioux Falls as they compete as a team in the Nike Team Regional Meet. The top two teams at the Regional will advance to the National Meet in Portland in December. We wish them the best of luck next week.

Scott Mittman was 4th overall in the Boys race at the Sr Spotlight meet. His family is proud

OK, so you think this is too easy in finding the “b”of the least squares regression line.
Then you probably do NOT want to come to City High’s Parent Math Class.

We are, however, excited to hear all the interest that is being stirred up concerning Nov 17’s Adult Math Class at City High school in Room 1214. The first session will cover some basic Algebra Skills and solving simple equations. If you are thinking that you will be attending the first session from 6:00pm to 7:00pm, it would be important to reserve your spot. We have chairs for 34 people and need to know how many will be needed.

Please email: John Carhoff at the following email address to reserve your chair.
Has your son or daughter ever asked you this question and you felt that the math s/he is doing is well over your head? Well, now is your chance to stay in tune with your child’s math skills.

•IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT REGARDING FLU VACCINE
Due to the limited influenza vaccine supply, the Visiting Nurse Association (VNA) flu clinics scheduled in the school district are no longer open to the public. The vaccines will go to ICCSD staff so that we can keep our staff healthy during this flu season. The VNA anticipate that they will receive another shipment of vaccine later in November and will be scheduling more public clinics at that time.
The VNA and ICCSD apologize for the inconvenience. Thank you for your patience and understanding.
•Students please remember to return your library books. The library is now offering the great deal of wiping out $1 worth of overdue book fines for one box of kleenex. Act now, this offer won’t be around for long.

October 16, 2009. Iowa City High made a clean sweep winning both the men’s and the women’s varsity Mississippi Valley Conference Mississippi Division cross country championships. In both case, it was their 15th division championship in cross country in the 18 years that the MVC has crowned division champions. On the men’s side, that is not only the most division championships won by any school in cross country, but it is also the most won by any school in ANY sport. For women, it is the most championships won by any school in cross country and ties Jefferson softball for the most titles won by any school in any sport.

Bruce Wilson wins City High Teacher of the Year

Excellence in Education Award accepted on October 15, 2009
at City staff meeting

Fellow Science Teacher Kevin Koepnik commented,
“Passion. Commitment. Deep, expansive knowledge. Bruce Wilson thinks about chemistry teaching all the time. His innovative methods are far ahead of the chemistry teaching curve. To say he is the best chemistry teacher in Iowa is an understatement. He is the best. Anywhere.”

“Working with Bruce has been wonderfully challenging. He is tough to keep up with. Nobody works harder or longer to make certain that each student activity is perfect. If it can be better, it will be better. Now. It’s tough not to want to measure up to him. As a competitive person, I’ve spent the past 26 years competing with my closest friend. It’s made me a much better teacher.”

City High Physical Education teachers Greg Brown, Brad Smith, Dan Sabers, and Mariah Ritter need your help in talking with your student about two forms that will be coming home. These forms are physical activity agreements between you, your student and the PE Staff to keep your child active for a minimum of 120 minutes/week. This coordinated effort is a result of the Healthy Kids Act 2009 as we all work together towards healthier children. Please ask you student about these forms. When the forms come home, please visit with your student about the Plan and both you and your child sign the plan. Our PE teachers will then review the plan with your child and also sign the form. A copy of the form will be kept at school in your student’s cumulative file. We look forward to supporting your student in making healthy choices for physical activity!
