Corridor Solids for AutoCAD Civil 3D on Autodesk Labs

This technology preview allows Civil 3D users to generate AutoCAD solids that represent real-world items such as tunnels, retaining walls, or pavement layers. These can be easily used for: visual analysis and design verification, construction coordination, and expanded model sharing between various project team members. Like many Labs technology previews, this is an English language add-on, but it can be installed on any language version of AutoCAD Civil 3D 2012. The technology preview is starting out as 64-bit only.

Overview

Project River Analysis Extension for AutoCAD^® Civil 3D^® 2012 software and AutoCAD^® Map 3D^® 2012 is a sophisticated river modeling software package supports HEC-RAS within the AutoCAD Civil 3D 2012 and AutoCAD Map 3D 2012 environment. This technology preview of River Analysis makes it easier than ever before to compute water surface profiles for modeling rivers, bridges, culverts, spillways, levees, floodplain and floodway delineations, stream diversions, channel improvements, and split flows.

This extension for Civil 3D 2012 and Map 3D 2012 makes it extremely easy to:

Automate HEC-RAS cross section cutting, water surface analysis, flood plain mapping, and all related modeling tasks.
Utilize numerous automation mapping tools for extracting cross sections from various digital terrain sources including contours, TINs, DTMs, DEMs, LiDAR data, survey files, surveyed cross sections, etc.
Perform sophisticated bridge and culvert analysis as well as automating the process of designing and analyzing roadway crossings.
Automate mapping of bank station locations, channel and overland flow lengths, levee locations, ineffective flow areas, Manning’s roughness data from topographic map data.

This technology preview is now available as a free download from the link above. The River Analysis Extension for AutoCAD Civil 3D / AutoCAD Map 3D technology preview is licensed for a limited term and for a particular territory as referenced in the End User License Agreement. The technology preview executable expires at the end of the technology preview based on a time-bomb date that has been set for December 31, 2011.

Latest Update

An installer correction was made to address the issue where the River Analysis icons were not placed on the desktop when installed on non-US English language versions.

In a continued effort to improve, we are releasing this hotfix for Autodesk Storm and Sanitary Analysis 2012 installed with a localized (non-English) versions of AutoCAD Civil 3D 2012.

This hotfix will address a connection issue between Autodesk Storm and Sanitary Analysis and Civil 3D.

To apply this hotfix, download the file below to a location on your machine, right-click on the EXE file and select 'Run as Administrator'. Failure to selecting Run as Administrator on machines with UAC enabled will prompt a message requiring you to do so.

The implementation of engineering software should start with the development of standard workflows that are independent of a drafting platform. In this presentation, Bradley E. Adams, P.E., a consultant who worked with the Colorado Department of Transportation to assist them with the development of CAD standards and standard process workflows for design and drafting, will discuss key lessons learned from that engagement and report on its return on investment. He will further discuss the benefits of supporting dual platforms for drafting and design and explain how interoperability standards can result in increased competition for projects that may lead to reduced costs for government agencies. Solution:

In Civil 3D 2011 there are two undocumented commands that will allow to see the list of unused point numbers and a list of available point numbers.

LISTUSEDPOINTNUMBERS - displays a list of used used points in the drawing

LISTAVAILABLEPOINTNUMBERS - Lists avalable points to be used in the drawing. This command is also accessible via contextual tab under COGO Point Tools.

Issue:

You have some cross sections where the finished grade line is not matching with the assembly. Your cross-sections have a finished ground element that is not correctly outlining your proposed pavement section.

Solution:

When subassemblies are joined into assembly, surfaces of the subassemblies can overhang each other, which will result of surface being created incorrectly. In Civil 3D the assemblies that have points coded to top links sometimes use the best guess when connecting to the point codes by ignoring the connection order. As a result you may be seeing this issue. Overhang correction is a settings found in Corridor properties which may help you resolve this issue. If you go to Corridor Properties>Surfaces tab you will see it there.

1. Right-click on Corridor and choose Properties

2. In Surfaces tab, under Datum set Overhang Correction to Top Links and OK

3. From Prospector tab right-click on Sample line collection and choose Properties

4. In Sections tab, click Sample More Sources button and add all objects to be sampled

5. Click OK to close all dialogs

6. From Home ribbon, click on Section Views choose Create Multiple Views

7. In Create Multiple Views wizard adjust the settings as you wish and click on Create Section Views

8. Program should create section views correctly and display all sampled objects in it

Solution

This happens when specifying a network location for either:

The “Single shared folder” option on the “Select Installation Folders for Support Content” page of the Deployment Wizard.

or

The Help files location for the “Custom folders” option on the “Select Installation Folders for Support Content” page of the Deployment Wizard.

To work around this you need to pre-seed the Deployment AdminImage with the HelpHTML files:

1. For the Deployment share create this folder structure:

32-bit Deployments:
\\HostComputer\ShareName\...\DeploymentName\AdminImage\x86\en-US\acad\Acad\Program Files\Root
64-bit Deployments:
\\HostComputer\ShareName\...\DeploymentName\AdminImage\x64\en-US\acad\Acad\Program Files\Root

Issue:

You wanted to target a specific surface in a corridor you are creating, but the specific surface is not appearing in the list of surfaces that you can chose from as a target in the Target Mapping dialog box.

Solution:

The issue happens if your surface is created by pasting some surfaces together and due to the circular reference. The circular reference happens whenever two or more objects (or drawings) are trying to reference objects from each other. The surface created in such way is dynamically linked to the dependent surfaces. To resolve this issue the surface needs to have this link broken. There are two ways to achieve this:

Using LANDXMLOUT, export the XML file from the surface and re-import it in the same drawing. This will overwrite definitions and your surface will be available for targeting but will not be dynamic anymore. Use this workaround if your surface does not need to be dynamic.

Using LANDXMLOUT, export the XML file from the surface. Rename the surface in the drawing and re-import XML file in. This way your dynamic surface will be intact but you will have an identical copy of it, available for targeting. Use this workaround if you would like to keep your dynamic surface.

Issue

Using "Export to Hec Ras" feature, you export a .GEO file from Civil 3D to Hec Ras. Once you import the .GEO file into Hec Ras, the stream direction is reversed.

Solution

To Reverse the flow direction in Hec Ras, go to the Geometric Data editor> GIS Tools> Search Invert Lines Table > and Flip Coord. Order.

When you execute the report from the UK and Ireland country kit; UK and Ireland Reports> Civil Model Reports> Corridors > Corridor Setting Out Report you receive a "Failed to execute 'Corridor Setting Out Report'." warning message in the panorama window.

Solution

To correct this issue, you need to edit your toolbox and change the macro name of this report from

Notice the capital "C" starting the macro name.

Issue:

You were trying to migrate Survey database in Civil 3D 2011 and received a message “Survey.SDB: Migration failed” or “Survey.SDX: Migration failed”.

Solution:

This error occurs if legacy files Survey.SDB or Survey.SDX are set to be read-only. Typically, this would happen if first migration was not successful or if new Survey database files (Survey.SDBX and Survey.SDXX) are removed from Project folder (if database was previously migrated). To resolve this issue:

Go to Working Folder and Project directory to locate Survey data
Right-click on Survey.SDB and choose Properties
In File Properties General tab remove Read-only toggle.
IN teh same directory repeat the same steps for Survey.SDX file
In Civil 3D 2011 Survey tab, locate an exclamation icon on the Survey database (this indicates that database may be migrated)
Right-click and Choose Migrate
Confirm that the Migration is successful.

When you wanted to create a data shortcut reference you got this message:

Solution:

This issue could happen if the XML file path exceeds maximum character limit of 256. To resolve this issue you may need to create your data shortcut folder closer to the root.

Another possibility is that your object name has some special symbol in name such as <>. Rename your object and program should be able to create references.

Issue

You want to reset the AutoCAD® Civil 3D® 2011 user settings for a particular user.

Solution

To reset the AutoCAD® Civil 3D® 2011 user settings for a particular user, follow these steps:

Important!

Make sure you back up any customized Civil 3D 2011 files before you implement the following procedure.

Log on to the computer as that user.
On the Start menu (Windows), click Run.
In the Run dialog box, enter regedit.
In the Registry Editor, browse to the following key and delete it:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Autodesk\AutoCAD\R18.1\ACAD-9000:409
Close the Registry Editor.
Using Windows Explorer, browse to and delete the following user's application folders:

For Windows Vista and Windows 7

C:\Users\\AppData\Roaming\Autodesk\C3D 2011 C:\Users\\AppData\Local\Autodesk\C3D 2011

For Windows XP

C:\Documents and Settings\\Application Data\Autodesk\C3D 2011
C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Application Data\Autodesk\C3D 2011
Start AutoCAD Civil 3D. This will initiate the secondary installer, re-creating the deleted files and folders.

When installing or extracting a product, update, or hotfix you receive one of the following messages:

"A problem occurred while extracting the archive"
"... is not a valid win32 application

Solution

There are two main reasons why the extraction may be unsuccessful:

The download itself did not complete successfully.
The download completed, but a conflict on the local machine prevented the successful extraction/installation.

To verify whether the download completed successfully, use the MD5 Checksum Tool to identify the checksum of the file:

Download the MD5 checksum tool utility.
Double click the MD5.exe file and choose Create an MD5 Checksum.
Click Browse and select your downloaded file.

The resulting alphanumeric code is your checksum. To verify if the value matches, check the download page for your product and compare the alphanumeric string. On the product download page, click on Estimated Times and Details to see the checksum of the original file.

If the checksum is not present on your product's download page, you can contact product Product Support with the following information:

The error message received
The file name and file size of the downloaded file
The checksum value from the MD5 utility

If your checksum value does not match the product's, download the file again.
If your checksum value matches, temporarily turn off your antivirus software and attempt to run the extraction again.
