What does it cost to self-publish a book to Amazon Kindle?

Quick answer:

There is no charge to upload your book to the Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing platform.

Amazon has two Royalty Option plans:

> 35% of the Kindle book sales price

and

> 70% of the Kindle book sales price

If you choose the 70% Royalty Option, a Delivery Charge (currently, 15 cents per MB in the USA) is deducted from your royalty.

If you choose the 35% Royalty Option, there is no Delivery Charge.

You decide which is best for you, depending on the size of your book (in megabytes), and various other factors you'll read about in the links below.

Create eBook Cover with Amazon Kindle Cover Creator

Amazon's new Cover Creator (beta) shows great promise.

While earlier versions were pretty basic, this new version can create a very professional-looking cover for your Kindle eBook.

Before starting this exercise, make sure you have your manuscript (preferably as a well-formatted squeaky-clean MS Word file) ready, and know where it is... and, if you have an image you want to use for your cover, that you have it ready and know where it is.

To get started, go here:

You'll see the Home for Amazon KDP:

Click Bookshelf (the first of the four selections near the top of the display).

[While you are here... especially if you are new to Kindle... notice that this is the starting place to build a Kindle format eBook... and all your Help files are right here.]

Your Bookshelf will appear.

The image shows my own Bookshelf with my "eBooks in work" displayed in the contents list.

Your Bookshelf will display your eBooks or will be blank if you have not started any eBooks.

Click the large yellow button titled "Add New File" just above the list of titles.

Type the name you want on your book cover in the "Book Name" slot near the bottom of this display.

[I like to use the name I want on the cover, and let the Cover Creator place it on the cover, but this isn't absolutely necessary, as you can edit the cover later.]

Now move down to number 4: Upload or Create a Book Cover

Choose Launch Cover Creator beta. It's a gray button just above the next major step (number 5 in red letters.)

You may be tempted to try to select an option here, but this is just a Help display.

Study the Cover Creator Help Display to understand how this works, then click the orange button titled Continue at the bottom right of the display.

Chose the image you want to use for your Cover. For this exercise, I have elected to use a plain brownish red background.

As soon as I select my image, the Cover Creator uses my image plus the title and author name I entered (earlier on this form), builds several different design ideas, and presents them to me:

Cover Creator presents a variety of different designs for you to select the one you like best.

I decide to look at the one in the middle of the top row... the one that has text at an angle.

Cover Creator displays the cover I chose. Notice buttons at the bottom of the screen to add final touches to the cover.

Here is a different design. I decide I like this one best.

Notice the edit box is now at the bottom left is now open.

I choose fonts to see how different fonts will look.

A scroll under the cover shows different fonts available.

This selection shows what the font Philosopher will look like on my book cover.

I hadn't expected to use a fancy font, but Great Vibes looks good and expresses the feel of elegant drop caps.

I decide to ask Cover Creator to Preview it. (click orange button at bottom)

Here is my cover with Great Vibes font for the title and the original font for the subtitle and author name.

Note: I have used the edit box to touch up the display of the lines for sub title and author name.

I decide I like this cover, so I click the orange button at the bottom of the screen, "Save and Submit".

After the cover is saved, the main screen is presented again, where I go to item 4. Upload Your Book File.

I click the orange button "Browse", then choose my (ready and waiting) MS Word file for this eBook.

The Amazon KDP loads my MS Word file, applies the cover I've just made, and converts to Kindle content format.

When the conversion finishes, the Amazon KDP software gives me the opportunity to view my new Kindle eBook in the on-line Previewer or download a preview file to be viewed on the downloadable Kindle Previewer.

Follow procedure below for MS Word 2010:

In this article, we create a Table of Contents, using the MS Word 2010 TOC wizard. We look again at our test file to preview the Heading tags we have entered that we want to include in the Table of Contents.

Review your file and tag all Chapter Titles or Poem Titles that you want to appear in the Table of Contents.

Scroll through your file to be sure you have tagged all Titles that you want in the Table of Contents.

Click References on the Ribbon Menu, then Choose Table of Contents at the far left.

When the Drop Down box appears, click Table of Contents, near the bottom of the list.

Choose how many levels you want for this Table of Contents, and clear the tick box to show that you don't want page numbers in your Table of Contents

Your Table of Contents appears at the point in your file where you clicked your cursor.

Now, we must add a Bookmark to first line of the Table of Contents to tell the Kindle how to find it.

Click your cursor at just before the first letter of the Table of Contents title, then, from the Ribbon Menu at the top of the screen, click the Insert Tab to display the Insert Menu, then, from approximately the center of the ribbon, choose Bookmark.

Type toc into the window and click OK.

Notice at the lower left is a tick box to tell the software to make Bookmarks visible.

When you save the file, the TOC will be re-built with a TOC bookmark where you placed it.

In the illustration below, note the vertical I-Bar just before the T of Table of Contents (below).

You are now ready to create a Sample to test and proofread... then if all is well, publish your book to Amazon KDP.

This is one of those tasks that looks and sounds harder than it is. But... despite the fact that it is quite easy if you are prepared, it's even easier to cause yourself real trouble if you aren't prepared.

In this article, we show you how to tag your Chapter Titles (or, in this example, "Poem Titles") with the MS Word Style, Heading 1.

This is an essential step, and is needed for the Table of Contents for your Kindle eBook.

Please load your test file that you created in the previous tutorial.

My test file, Poems by Emily Dickinson, with the Styles list expanded, now looks like the screen shot below.

We have cleaned out the garbage and are now ready to start formatting our file.

If your Styles list doesn't look like the one above, you may need to expand your Styles list.

To do that: click on the tiny Double-A icon at the top of the Styles box.

We are working with our test file, Poems by Emily Dickinson, which we created in the previous

article:

If you are working with your own file, make sure you are working with a copy.

Our first step is to apply Normal Style to the entire document.

That will smooth out the text and remove clutter that may have been lurking in the original file.

To do that:

(1) Select (highlight) the entire file with CTRL-A,

(2) Find Normal in the Styles list and Double-Click on it.

Now, scroll through the entire file to find Chapter Titles and tag them all as Heading 1.

To do that:

(1) Select (highlight) each Chapter Title in turn

(2) Find Heading 1 in the Styles list and double-click it to apply Heading 1 to each Chapter Title.

Poems by Emily Dickinson now looks like this:

Now, you can see the value of MS Word Styles.

With just a few clicks, we now have nicely-formatted Titles, and each poem is on its own page.

MS Word DOC or DOCX Directly to Amazon KDP: How to: Step by Step

MS Word Uploaded Directly to Amazon KDP

In this article, we show you how to create a Kindle eBook using MS Word without any other software and without advanced formatting.

For illustration purposes, we will be using some poems by Emily Dickinson, which, since they are now in the Public Domain, can be found on the Gutenberg website.

To follow along, you might want to download some of those poems, or alternatively, you might use one of your own files.

Using one of your own files is a good idea, because you can see what you can achieve with your own manuscript, without risking any damage to your file.

{1} The first step is to import your file as plain text to get rid of any garbage or clutter that was in the original file.

Open Microsoft Word, and open a new clean file with:

File | New
Save the (still blank) file as Poems by Emily Dickinson.

Next, go to your original manuscript or test file, highlight the entire file (with CTRL-A), then press CTRL-C.

Go back to Poems by Emily Dickinson. (the new, still blank file you just created).

Click your cursor at the beginning of the first line, and press CTRL-V.

The Paste Options box appears:

Notice that you have four Options, represented as different icons, under Paste Options:.

The icon at the far right... a large letter A... represents "plain text".

Click the large letter A icon to import your original file as plain text.

Your file, (the formerly blank Poems by Emily Dickinson) is now full of plain text.

Next, we will display our Styles Panel, then format Poems by Emily Dickinson with Styles that Microsoft Word has already provided for us.

Press CTRL-SHIFT-S.

The Styles panel is displayed and your file now looks like this:

{2} Scroll Through and Correct Obvious Errors

On a plain text display like this, incorrect spacing and page breaks are more easily found than in finished format.

As I scroll through the file, I notice several things that need to be corrected.

Most obvious is that the poems follow one after the other, without a page break between them.

We will fix that by using a Style that has a feature of "Page Break Before".

I also notice that some poems have titles, while others have no titles.

In your own file, you would want to make all pages consistent, but, from her history, we know that Emily Dickinson often did not name her poems, so we will leave this as is.

*If you are working on your own file, this is, most likely, where you will have the most to do. I cover cleanup in other articles.

If you already have MS Word, you are in luck: you have the software you need.

Otherwise, you'll need MS Word or similar "MS Word-like" program.

WordPerfect, Open Office, and a few others I've heard about, are not enough "MS Word-like", even if they have the word "Word" in their name.

If you don't already have MS Word, your best bet is Atlantis Word Processor, described below.

The very best software to create a Kindle Book is MS Word!

I started with MS Word 2003 when I first discovered the Kindle, and once I got into the swing of it (at first, I just couldn't believe it was that easy), I was publishing Kindle books with ease and confidence, while all about me other would-be Kindle authors, some of whom had been at it a lot longer than I had, were gnashing teeth and tearing hair… and complaining bitterly about the Amazon Kindle format.

“You are working too hard”, I would tell them… “it’s really as easy as pie… all you have to do is switch to MS Word.”

Why they refused to do so, and why so many others continue to try to do things the hard way, is one of the great mysteries of life that I will never understand.

There is no doubt about it:

A perfectly-formatted MS Word file input directly to the Amazon KDP (Kindle Direct Publishing) produces a perfectly-formatted Kindle ebook.

The key is “perfectly formatted”.

Your MS Word file must be squeaky clean… free of all garbage code… and you must follow the required steps exactly.

If you are willing to take the time to do that, you’ll have your Kindle book formatted and finished, and in the Amazon catalog, ready for purchase, while those who refuse to take that time are still gnashing teeth and tearing hair and blaming Amazon.

How to create a Table of Contents using Atlantis Word Processor

I've already tagged my Chapter Headings, so I have only one more step:

I go to the top of my file and place my cursor where I want to place the TOC.

From the Menu strip at the top of the page of Main Menu, choose the Insert tab.

From the Insert drop down menu, choose:

Table of Contents

The Table of Contents appears at the position you chose.

Unlike many other Word Processors, Atlantis Word Processor automatically puts a "TOC" bookmark at the beginning of the Table of Contents title.

A Bookmark at the beginning of the Table of Contents is necessary, to tell the Kindle where to find the Table of Contents.

Don't Let 'em Snow You --- MS Word Uploaded to KDP is the Ideal Route to a Perfect Kindle eBook

This article illustrates that an MS Word file, either DOC or DOCX, uploaded directly to Amazon KDP (Kindle Direct Publishing) is the ideal route to publish to Kindle.

Enlarge the screen-shot with a double-click, so you can see details of the header.

If Chapter Headings are properly tagged, and a Table of Contents created by the user, the MOBI file -- shown here displayed in Kindle Previewer -- will include the much-desired TOC.NCX file, which allows the reader to jump back and forth between chapters.

Note the double arrows in the header at the top of the screen-shot. They indicate the presence of the TOC.NCX file. Note, also, that the Table of Contents button is active, and the TOC.NCX button is active.

When this MOBI file is viewed on a physical Kindle device, the Table of Contents button will be active there, also.

Since the software knows the location of the Table of Contents, it is not necessary to insert a "toc" bookmark.

It is necessary to insert a "start" bookmark if you want the ebook to open at a certain page.

On a whim, I inserted a "start" bookmark at a poem about 30 pages into this book, Never Bet the Devil Your Head, and that is where this book opens.

If images are properly formatted and inserted into the MS Word file, they will display properly in the MOBI file, without further attention.

There is no value to saving the MS Word file to HTML (web page, filtered), and, in fact, that is the road to trouble.

If this same MS Word file is converted to HTML, it will be necessary to do further HTML programming to get the TOC.NCX file.

It is as easy as pie, as I have been known to say on more than one occasion, but it IS necessary to upload a clean MS Word file.

Saving a messy MS Word file to HTML will not do anything to remove the garbage that’s in the original file. It must be removed by hand.

14. Create an ePub

This is No. 14 in a series of Tutorials for CJ's Easy As Pie "The Pie" Kindle and eBook Self-Publishing Package, which starts here:

At the Menu strip at the top of the screen, near the left end, locate the two CD disk icons.

At the Main Menu, find the black icon that displays a drop-down Save As box.

The first CD Icon will likely be white... indicating that you have just saved this file.

The second CD Icon is black, and there is a tiny black down arrow just to the right of it.

Click the tiny down arrow.

The Save As drop-down box will appear.

From the Save As drop-down box, choose: Save as eBook

Fill out eBook information

Pay particular attention to the options on the last panel of the Save As ePub Dialog Box.

Be sure to check Save Page Margins

Click Setup and set units to ems

Be sure the Fonts selection window is set to Don't Save.

The small Cover Image window will display the first image (if any) in your file. That might be an image you inserted, intending it for the Cover, or another illustration that just happens to be first.

Using the down arrow at the right edge of the Cover Image window you can scroll to another image in this file, or you can click the blank box to be able to go find another image.

You can upload a different image at publish time, if you like.

This cover image step is not required (since you have another chance to upload the real cover), but its good practice because later steps may object if the file doesn't have a cover.

When you are finished here, the software will go to work to create your ePub file.

It won't pop up a message when it's done, but you can watch its progress at the bottom of your screen. However, if you have a very short file, it may finish before you even notice.

When activity stops, go to The Pie Folder.

That's where you told CJsEasyAsPie to put your files, remember?

There, you will find your ePub file:

You can read and proof your ePub file with Sony for PC.... or ADE (Adobe Digital Editions)... or with Sigil.

Sigil can also run it through an ePub validator.

The ePub you just made is in a format acceptable to almost every digital publishing house, out there, including Amazon Direct Publishing (KDP).

I can't promise anything except that your ePub will pass ePub validation.... which SHOULD be enough for every publishing house that claims to accept that format, and I can't, as yet, provide full instructions for any but Amazon.

Amazon KDP will accept books in either ePub or MOBI (and others that we will discuss later).

Steps To Publishing with Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing

As you just saw, it is not required to create a MOBI file on your desktop, but it makes things easier, so let's do that next.

We will copy the ePub we just made and feed it to Amazon Kindle Previewer... which will run KindleGen... and KindleGen will create a MOBI file.

Right-Click on the filename My Original Document. epub

Choose Copy from the box that appears:

Go to your desktop and find the icon for Amazon Kindle Previewer

Highlight the icon without actually clicking, then Paste the ePub file right on top of the Amazon Kindle Previewer icon.

(This may take a little finesse... you don't want to actually click--that will make Amazon Kindle Previewer start... you want to gently drop the ePub file, then the ePub will make Amazon Kindle Previewer start.)

The software will go to work and shortly will tell you that it has created a MOBI file that you can view right there.

You will then be able to view how your book will look on several different Kindles and Kindle Devices.

Investigate the Menu bar at the top of the Kindle Previewer to see different ways you can look at your book.

To find the MOBI file you just created:

Go to The Pie Folder, and you will see a new folder named:

Compiled My Original Document. epub

Inside that folder you will find the MOBI file you just made.

That's the file that you can upload to Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP). (But please test it every way you can, first.)

View and proof your new MOBI file in Amazon Kindle Previewer and on your own Kindles before you take it to publish.

With CJsEasyAsPie's built in user guide and ready-to-go Styles, you won't spend time wondering how to do this or that. Or how to format something to look like a hand-written letter or wedding invitation... or a newspaper article... or for technical books... a page of computer code.

Just look at the Styles Pane to the left of your screen and pick out a likely-sounding Style name.

You now have ready-to-use Styles that use fonts and paragraphs that meet Amazon's requirements... and you also have ready to go "special" Styles available to you..

You might, for example, want to indicate a handwritten letter... or a newspaper article... or a highway sign or computer code.

You are not restricted to CJsEasyAsPie's Styles... you can also create your own Styles. CJsEasyAsPie's Styles are just there to guide you.

If you want to test a Style, just high-light a paragraph of your own text or the NONSENSE TEXT in the Template, then double-click on a likely Style...

Remember, you can always UN-DO with CTRL-Z... so feel free to practice until you see what you want.

13. Now that your file is clean you are ready to format it with CJsEasyAsPie Template and Styles

Now that your file is clean you are ready to format it with CJsEasyAsPie Template and Styles.

We need a plain text file so we can see what the different Styles do.

I'm using Edgar Allan Poe's The Bells, downloaded from Gutenberg.org.

You might download a copy for yourself, and follow along... or, a better idea, use a COPY of your own file.

The Bells Ready for Styles to be Applied

My first step is to decide what I want as a default font.

Normal font is the default font as originally designed by Microsoft, and it is the "parent" of all other Styles.

Body Text is a copy of Normal, but modified as needed if you need another body text.

If you are heavily involved in manuscript preparation, especially for print, you may have such a need, but for now, we will use Normal for our default... our body text.

We select the entire file with CTRL-A, then double-click on the Style we have decided we will use for our default text.

With my entire file highlighted, I go to the Styles Pane and double-click on Normal.

To quickly find Normal, click your cursor inside the Styles Pane, and type "n" as many times as necessary to find the Normal entry.

This is one of the "most rewarding" changes that can be made to most manuscripts.

Where the manuscript may have been just a hodgepodge, the text will suddenly look smooth and clean.

I am now ready to apply some Styles to dress up my eBook.

First, I look for a Title Style for my title... "The Bells".

I highlight the words "The Bells", then go to the Styles Pane.

I click my cursor inside the styles pane, then type the letter "T" until I find the style named "Title".

Then, I double-click on the Style "Title" to apply it to the highlighted Title (The Bells) in my manuscript.

Next I highlight the author's name, "Edgar Allan Poe, then go to the Styles Pane, and type the letter A until I find the style name "Author Name".

Now, I select the sub-title, "Example of Assonance".

Then, I go to the Styles Pane and type "S" as many times as necessary to find the Style named "Sub-Title", and double-click it.

Next I search through my manuscript for all chapter headings and apply the correct Heading Style.

(This is a poem, not a book, and it has verses, not chapters, but I needed something short for this demonstration... so humor me and pretend this is a book and the verses are chapters.)

Next, we go through and find our main headings... usually Chapter Headings... and apply the Heading Styles we want for each.

The Bells is a poem; it does not have chapters, but it does have verses.

To quickly find Headings, click your cursor inside the Styles Pane, and type "H" as many times as necessary to find Heading Styles.

I find each Heading, highlight it to select it, then double-click on the Heading I want in the Styles Pane.

Here is what The Bells looks like now... with only a few minutes spent on formatting.

Next, I will create a Table of Contents.

I've already tagged my Chapter Headings, so I have only one more step:

I go to the top of my file and place my cursor where I want to place the TOC.

From the Menu strip at the top of the page of Main Menu, choose the Insert tab.

From the Insert drop down menu, choose:

My Table of Contents appears at the position I chose.

Now you are ready to Create your final file... the one you will upload to Amazon KDP.

12. What is The Best Method of Final Manuscript Clean-Up?

The Best Method of Manuscript Clean-Up

Now that you have removed stray spacing, extra paragraphs, and extra page breaks, your manuscript probably looks good and you think it's ready to go.

That may be true... but, for most manuscripts there is still more that can be done to make your book beautiful.

These final steps require a bit more decision-making on your part, so, the paragraphs below, I'll describe each method and the good and the not so good of each method.

My experience suggests that it is best to use every possible method, but if you have done a lot of formatting, you will probably be reluctant to do that.

1. Return All Styles to Normal Style

Select your entire file with CTRL-A, then apply your default Style.

This returns all Styles to the default Style (usually Normal) leaving all "manual" or "direct" formatting untouched.

This will remove all your MS Word Styles, such as Chapter Headings.

It will NOT remove "direct" formatting, such as "bold" (which you formatted with CTRL-B) and "italics" (which you formatted with CTRL-I).

It also won't remove certain formatting that you can't see.

Don't overlook the importance of that last statement:

It also won't remove certain formatting that you can't see.

You might think if you can't see it, it can't hurt anything, but nothing could be further from the truth.

Unseen--or "hidden" formatting--is one of the biggest causes of poorly-formatted ebooks.

It isn't "Word bloat", as some would have you believe. Your file may have bloat, but the Kindle software knows to ignore it.

Much of the danger comes from formatting that conflicts from the proper format can't be seen for one reason or another.

A typo that was corrected using the wrong font is one example.

I once had a customer file with this kind of hidden error.

The manuscript was done in Times New Roman font, but typos had been corrected in Times font.... and the different font was invisible in the manuscript.
When the ebook was published, the different fonts made the text look ugly.
Another method of cleanup is:

Clear Formatting

This method clears all formatting, including bold and italics, but does not remove pictures and page breaks.

With some Word Processors, including MS Word, a "Clear All" command is available from the Menu.

Some other Word Processors, one being Atlantis, do not have a single command to "clear all", but, instead, have two commands:

Remove Paragraph Formatting with CTRL-Q

And

Remove Character Formatting with CTRL-SPACEBAR

The third method of clean up is:

The Nuclear Option

You can select your entire manuscript with CTRL-A, copy it to NotePad, then copy it back in.

This clears out ALL old formatting, including pictures and page breaks, with what Mark Coker calls the Nuclear Option.

You must make the decision as to which of the above is best for your file.

But none of those will get rid of such things as extra spaces and extra paragraph returns, and extra tabs that we put in by hand to format our document … and it won’t get rid of stray spaces, periods, and commas, that we, or an editor, left in by accident.

We will have to go through and take out all that extra stuff the same way we put it in … by hand.

11. Remove Extra Paragraphs and Extra Page Breaks

After you run AutoCorrect, you may still have extra paragraph returns and/or extra page breaks, and even Section Breaks in your file.

To check your own file for these extra (and problem-causing) formatting marks, turn on “Show Formatting Marks” with:

CTRL-SHIFT-8

(Repeat CTRL-SHIFT-8 to toggle Show Formatting On and Off.)

You will probably see a lot of extra paragraph returns, the symbol for which is [¶].

That’s what publishers call a “pilcrow”.

Here is a “pilcrow” enclosed within square brackets [¶].

Can you see a pilcrow on your Taskbar? That’s a switch to show or hide all these formatting marks.

For our Kindle format file, we want just one paragraph return at the end of every paragraph.

Space between paragraphs should be added by Styles, not with the ENTER key.

Almost anyone who learned on an old-fashioned typewriter, will, until they learn to use Styles, use what Microsoft Word calls "direct formatting".

That is... they will use manual page breaks, extra tabs and spaces, and extra paragraph returns, until they get their pages to look right on the computer screen.

That may be fine a printed page, but digital doesn't work the same way, so we have to take all those extras out.

Although AutoCorrect could do it automatically, there is some decision-making involved here, so it's safer to use "Find and Replace" so we can keep an eye on what's being deleted.

The reason we wait to find extras until after we run AutoCorrect is that they are easier to find then.

Remember, you don't need the extra paragraph returns to create space between paragraphs because your Styles insert spacing where needed.

You don't need manual page breaks because your Chapter Headings have a "page break before".

That will cause each new Chapter to start on a new page, which is the norm for most books.

If you want a "page break before" any image... just use the Style named "Image Page Break Before".

If you want a page break where there is neither an image or a Chapter Heading, you can do that too.

Just go to any paragraph that doesn't already have a Page Break Before, (but you need one there), right-click on the paragraph, choose Paragraph, then check the option "Page Break Before".

Ok, now that we've established that we don't need those extra paragraph returns and page breaks, let's remove the extras with Find and Replace.

Call the Find and Replace box with CTRL-H.

When we want to search for a paragraph return or a page break, we don't type out those words... instead we use "Special Characters" to stand for the format we want.

The “Special Character” that allows us to search for a paragraph return is:

^p… that’s a caret (shifted 6 key) followed by a lower-case letter p [^p]

And... that MUST be a lower-case letter p.

So, to get rid of extra paragraph returns, we do this:

Find All ^p^p and Replace with ^p

Then just repeat until the program returns "none" or "0" (zero)

The Special Character for Manual Page Break is ^m.

Find Page Breaks with ^m, and replace with nothing (just tap Replace All).

It's also a good idea to look for "Section Breaks". They aren't needed in a Kindle file, and can cause problems. So, either delete them or replace them with Page Breaks, if needed.

The special code for "Section Break" is ^b.

To remove Section Breaks, do this:

Find ^b (Section Break) and Replace with ^m (Page Break) or nothing (just tap Replace All).

Now we get to AutoCorrect... the powerful feature that can cut clean-up time down to minutes instead of hours.

Click on Tools in the Menu, and select AutoCorrect.

The program will stop each time it finds a new type of error to ask you if you want to auto-correct all errors of that type, or if you want it to stop to ask you each time.

In that way, you have control over what corrections are made.

Here are some examples:

AutoCorrect asks if it should remove "spare" or "extra" Spaces or Tabs

AutoCorrect has found what it thinks are spare (extra) spaces, and is asking if you want to:

Accept... Remove the highlighted extra space or tab
Or
Reject.... Don't remove the highlighted space or tab.
Or
Accept All or Reject All

In the manuscript text, AutoCorrect has highlighted what it thinks is a hyperlink, and is asking if it should be format it.

After you've run AutoCorrect, your file will be "almost right"... but we have a few more clean-up steps before we are ready to start formatting our file.

Copy your manuscript to The Pie Folder (which you created in Step 2), and give it a new filename... Testing The Pie.

Leave your original manuscript in its own safe location, so you can safely experiment with your new Styles.

Right-click on the filename Testing The Pie, choose Open With Atlantis Word Processor, and save the file.

Import Styles from The Pie Template

Open the Control Board with View | Control Board.

The Styles panel displays with a click on the fourth button on the top toolbar of the Control Board, the panel at the far left of your screen.

At the bottom of the Styles Panel, choose Import Styles Icon 3rd from right

The Import Styles box appears. Choose “CJsEasyAsPie, The Pie” then highlight all Styles in the Styles Import window, then click OK.

The Styles you just selected will be imported into the Styles List... for the document you currently have open.

As the Styles are being imported, you are given the opportunity to import some or all... and to choose to over-write or not over-write any Styles of the same Style names.

The names of the Styles in CJsEasyAsPie The Pie Template are intended to be descriptive of what each Style actually does.

In some cases you will need to browse around a bit to find the Styles that suit your purposes.

The CJsEasyAsPie The Pie Template, itself, has a page of "nonsense" text that you can use to display and experiment with different Styles to find those that best fit your need.

To apply a Style to a paragraph in your document, highlight the paragraph, then double-click the Style Name you want from the Styles Panel.

Note: You can't apply a Style to a word or words within a paragraph.

Your selection can be just one word, but it must be on a line by itself.

Comparing MS Word Styles and Atlantis Styles

Many people use MS Word for years without ever discovering Styles... and even if they do find them, they don't realize their value.

You've heard people say they don't use certain heading style, for example... "because the font is too big"... or because the font is in color... without realizing that Styles can be customized... and even used to help organize your document.

That's what we've done here with CJsEasyAsPie.

We've customized the Styles to make them most useful for digital publishing.

The CJsEasyAsPie Template, complete with a few pages of instructions, will appear.

If you were truly starting a new file, you could "Save As" your file name. (NewFile.docx), then delete the instructions from your file before starting to enter your own text.

For now, we will use this Template to get acquainted with the Styles it contains.

CJ's Easy As Pie Template

If your Control Board is not open, go to the View tab at the top of the screen and choose Control Board.

The Control Board can display 7 panels: Headings, Bookmarks, Sections, Styles, Lists, Format Palette, and Clip Library.

These panels are displayed using the corresponding buttons at the top of the Control Board:

We want the Styles Panel, so click the Styles button, the 4th from the left, shown slightly indented in the picture below:

When the Styles Panel appears, you’ll notice that it has its own Toolbar across the top.

At the far left, the word Styles:, and at the far right, two buttons, “tree” and “list.

Click the "list" button at the far right.

Your list of Styles appears in alphabetical order.

Now, if you scroll through your Styles, you will if you are used to using Styles in other word processors) see some familiar Styles, such as Heading 1, Heading 2, and Heading 3.

But you will also see new Styles, such as Author name, at the top of the list, and Bold Comment, and Caption.

You can format these Styles yourself, after you learn how different sizes and different spacing will appear on the Kindle, but here it is already done for you… taking only 30 seconds, perhaps to select a Style, rather than 10 minutes or so to decide how to format something a bit different from simple text.

Now, look at the Styles Panel toolbar again, and choose to display the Styles Panel in tree order.

Now, you will see Styles, grouped, as nearly as possible, with related Styles.

For example, under Pictures & Illustrations, you see Caption and two Image Syles… one with a Page Break before, and one without a Page Break Before.

Under Poetry and Quotes, you see several different Syles that might be used for Poetry, a Dialogue Quote, and even a Newspaper Quote.

Kindle Previewer is essential.

It gives you a way to see how your book will look when viewed on a number of different Kindles and other devices.

It has an even more important function... it is the easiest way to run Kindlegen... the program that generates the Kindle Mobi file.

You don't have to run Kindlegen from the computer's command line, as you may have heard.

Instead, you can download Kindle Previewer, and let it install itself in its default location.

It will also put a Kindle Previewer icon on your desktop.

When you want to run Kindlegen to create a Kindle eBook from an HTML file or an ePub file, you just "drag and drop"... or, what I find easier, "copy and paste" the MOBI file right on top of the Kindle Previewer icon.

Kindle for PC, Adobe Digital Editions, and Sony for PC Reader are eReaders. They are good to have and can help you with proofreading, but they don't display exactly the same as Kindle devices. If you don't have room for them on your computer, you can get by without them.
