There is something important about pattern. The way our eyes and mind look at and interpret things based on patterns of light and dark, order and chaos. Every time I get a glimpse of my mind's subconscious activity, I feel that I know myself better.

Window on Space

The biggest change I've made since becoming middle aged is that I concentrate on the experience of things rather than their meaning, my identity or the future.

In my painting that translates to painting what is interesting at the time rather than practicing a likeness or a technique.

Mandolin

People talk about emotions. They name them. There are emotions associated with love, with god, with fear and shame.

When my emotions come to me they are often overwhelming like an avalanche.
I can only make some kind of useful sense of them after the strength of their effects has passed.

A View of Earth from Space

A gorgeous weekend in Michigan! 70s and sunny; no humidity. We got a lot of yard work done but my allergies went crazy, even with Zyrtec.

Last night we saw The Avengers. It was good fun. My favorite line was when Captain America asked Iron Man what he was without his suit and Iron Man replied, "Let's see... a genius, a billionare, a playboy and a philanthropist." Ha!

Paper Airplanes in Flight

When you paint, the way you move your brush is dependent on your feelings. If you feel calm, your strokes will be calm. If you feel angry, your strokes will be angry. Originally, in the drawing stage, it was Hammer with Wedges but I really changed it when I did the panel.

Racer

In order to make art, you must be able to feel. You must care about something. Whether it's pain, love, anger or joy - emotions are fuel, energy. Art is a wonderfully harmless and constructive way of expressing all types of emotion.
They were talking about copyright on NPR today in relation to Pinterest. It's no different for Pinterest than any other site on the web. It's hard to imagine why you wouldn't want your pictures and links there - it's like free advertising. I think some people are posting pictures without crediting the originator. This can happen anywhere. We have to get used to how we want to operate regarding copyright on the net. I like the creative commons license .

Forest Walk

I love greys, especially with yellows, beiges and whites. My favorite greens are made from blues and umbers. I feel fortunate to get so much pleasure from color and shape. It's a healthly addiction.
