For a change this is not being built from one of our CNC cut boat kits. The licence to cut them was stopped when the design in GRP was bought out, so we now offer the popular Cape Henry 21 as a CNC okoume marine ply kit. I suppose we may be licenced to hand cut a Cape Cutter 19 bulkhead set but by hand?

The sample on the right has its clear plastic cover removed, the others still have them on.

The center three samples are quite metallic, how do they do this!
We import by the container load, three thicknesses, being 3mm , 5mm and 8mm , with the grain being either long or short. The veneer sheets are all long grain and are bonded wood on wood but just 0.6mm thick, its very flexible and easy to handle.

There are a number of ways but the best idea is to start by using our Superform bending plywood.

We also have the flexible veneers to compliment the plywoods.

Both of these examples have used what we call cross or short grain, which means the grain is along the 1220mm direction.
The sheet size is the old 8' x 4" or 2.44mtrs x 1.22mtrs, the grain can be supplied either long or short direction. The thickness stocked is 3mm, 5mm and 8mm, the product is CE aprooved, its also water proof.

Pictures are from our suppliers.
These were available as either hull deck and bulkheads, or as a sail away yacht, we had the rights but as orders were not coming in we gave them up.
First you need the plans, Alec Jordan of Jordan Boats has agreed for CKD Boats cc to sell the licence for each new boat kit we supply and as an all in price package.

The building stocks are supporting the 12mm plywood hull shapes and prior to the center keel plank being shaped.

The notches in the hull shapes are the stoppers to take the 6mm marine ply planks.

This greatly simplifies the lay up the the hull planks!

The stem is laminated, in this case we supplied clear oregon pine, the shape is pre cut from 12mm ply which was left after cutting the hull forms.

Kits or fully built boats are now available in Cape Town.

Our kit includes the three sheets of 12mm plys to make the formers out, also the five sheets of okoume 5mm (five ply) marine ply to CNC the hull from. All CNC cut and ready for you to start on your own Tammy Norrie 16 rowing boat, it sails too!

View the earlier thread on the same design build.

We developed the lapstrake plywood Cape May 25 from the Cape Cutter 19, a GRP trailer sailer that became popular in a short time and sold 70 boats in its first 2 years in the UK market. The 19 proved to be a boat that is full of character, able and seaworthy, with a surprising turn of speed. Well over 100 have been built in GRP and we have sold plans for another 60 boats to be built in plywood by amateurs.

We followed that design with the Cape Henry 21, a slightly bigger sister that still fitted within standard towing width in most countries but offered a bit more space and comfort for a small family. We have sold more than 70 of them for building in plywood by amateurs. There have followed many requests for other sizes within this same concept. I have been working on a 32ft version, the Cape Charles 32, which will happen when time allows and which will make a great cruiser for the Bahamas, Caribbean and similar areas with limited depth.

The Cape May 25 is an intermediate design, with more space than the smaller sisters but still intended for a small family of Mom, Dad and two kids. My client is nearly 2m tall, so extra long berths were a must. The foreward berths are 2.2m long and have plenty of foot room for two people. I kept it as one very big double berth rather than making a pair of V-berths so that it will have masses of storage under it for sails and gear, with space left over for a water tank and holding tank if needed. The rope locker in the bow adds to this stowage space and the bulkhead also serves as a crash bulkhead.

Cape May 25 kits will be available soon from CKD Boats cc shortly.

Proteus 10.6m Sailing Catamaran

This Lavranos Marine Design is a perfect small family ocean cruising cat. It is designed to offer a sufficient load carrying capacity to do ocean crossings with a family, at low cost and capable of amateur construction with a minimum amount of labour and skill. This simple, strong, fast, comfortable and cheap boat is also aimed at being practical & enjoyable for local use. She is also small enough for easy shorthanded use.

The interior consists of four berths

(two doubles + 2 singles), a saloon settee, a practical galley, and a toilet compartment, all with standing headroom.

She is configured with two machinery and keel variations; A 4 stroke 20HP outboard on a hinging nacelle is fitted for economy, as is tiller steering, with "kick up" rudders. The other choice is that a saildrive "single cylinder baby diesel" can be fitted, as can fixed mini keels.

The rig is the simplest possible, with a pair of cap shrouds and headstay triangulated, single diamond. The sail inventory is essentially a mainsail, a roller furler jib, and a storm jib. Optional: Genneker.
I did an entry on this amazing man some years back, then a few days back I noticed that that entry had moved to the number one in views very recently, why, I thought it was related to his death and this turned out to be correct.

I grew up in Maghull, Merseyside, Lancashire and only recentyly I walked past Franks grave in the local church on my way to see my mother in a care home close by.

The guy in the picture is my old friend from camping club youth days, Les French, he had told me he was involved in the Frank Hornby group. Picture and words below are taken from the Liverpool Echo, my thanks to them.

Maghull Art Group Exhibition is involved with the town’s Maghull Hornby Festival which takes place this weekend, May 18 and 19.

An image of Frank Hornby by group member Bob Joy will be among those on display at the exhibition.

Maghull Art Group will also be showing off their work at its spring exhibition which will form part of the Hornby Festival.

It takes place at Deyes High School between 10.30am and 5pm on both days and pictures will be available for purchase.
Frank Hornby’s 150th birthday marked on Google’s UK homepage

The Google Doodle - a stylised Google logo - in honour of the 150th anniversary of the birth of Frank Hornby

Head to Google.co.uk today and you’ll see a Google Doodle made up of toy trains to honour what would have been the 150th birthday of Frank Hornby, the inventor of Hornby Model Railways, Meccano and Dinky Toys.

Despite having no formal training in the subject, Hornby created and produced three of the most popular engineering-based toys of the 20th century.

Seen as a toy visionary, Hornby first patented his Meccano construction set of re-usable metal strips, plates, angle girders, wheels, axles, gears, nuts and bolts in 1901, though at that time he called it Mechanics Made Easy.

He established Meccano Ltd in 1908, which went on to produce the die-cast miniature model cars and trucks that made up Dinky Toys in the Thirties. The company also produced the Hornby Railways model train sets.

Hornby’s birthday will be celebrated through a four-day festival in Liverpool, where he was born. The Hornby festival will include a play, a lecture at the Museum of Liverpool, and an exhibition dedicated to the toymaker, while elsewhere in England Frank Hornby Week was launched on Monday at Brighton Toy and Model Museum.

Yes, I was one of those kids who grew up building things with Meccano, only then I never knew the inventor lived within walking distance from my home!
Not only in the bay but in the harbour!

This is nothing new but when we saw lots of power boats around it we thought it was dead and they were towing it out. As whales as common place but from around September each year where we live, it was a surprise to see one this early in the year.
With the whale taken out of the harbour and then tied off to the HBYC beach marker bouy, we were then informed that the council would later come out and remove it, they have a disposal unit for this kind of work they said.

A day later and the whale was still there, same again the next day, so it was not dead?

Seems it was never alive either, it was a prop for a very large film shoot done in and around the Hout Bay Harbour!

With this design we supplied just the CNC bulkheads and used the regular postal service between the RSA and USA, this was really cost effective. The design is by Dudley Dix and was drawn as an easy to build sail training small catamaran. There are some 15 bulkheads per hull, when cut with a CNC machine from okoume marine ply they are easy to set up.

Greg has built his hulls together but you can also do one at a time and on a narrow bench or shelf, as long as you can reach to the side furthest away from you.
I ended up with a little funkiness at the bows as I
didn't quite strip it right(first time strip-planked and all) - but the kid
wants it painted anyway. So I should be
able to fix it up. Or not.
Thats one idea but I suspect you will fall in love with it and keep it forever!

Picture and text from the designers web site. We have the plans ready for you now, just pay to our Pay Pal
account at roy (at) ckdboats.com and we will send you a PDF of the plans by return.

QUICK CANOE 155 – A simple plywood canoe – Plans $30

Roy

The plywood “disposable” canoe (see here) has been renamed the more salubrious “Quick Canoe”. I quite liked the name of “Disposable Canoe” but I agreed with the critique that it hinted at something that was poor quality rather than simple and Easy. It could have been the EasyCanoe, but that name was already taken.
The photo below shows two a group of us built in France immediately before paddling and camping our way down the Loire River for a week.

It fills a gap that our classic Eureka plywood Canoe doesn’t cover. The Eureka is a pretty canoe that is easy to build and paddles very nicely. It builds quickly over a couple of weeks if you can work full time, but with the Quick Canoe we were thinking of something possible to whack together in a weekend.
The Quick Canoe series has been designed to be as easy to build as possible while keeping some of the qualities of a good paddling canoe – in particular the ability to track. It is not designed to be the BEST canoe, but the SIMPLEST plywood canoe that was FASTEST to build without being too bad on the water rather than going the best paddling canoe we could do as represented by the Eureka.
