Morning!

Sorry I've gone a little quiet… I'm studying to become a fully fledged interior designer, its something i studied when i was a college but never carried on as a business as i went down the fashion route for a while, so I'm super excited to be picking it up now as i feel i can really focus with mature understanding (did i just call myself mature? surely not!) …. it's something i've always "done" but i now feel i want to get qualified. Going back to school is so exciting and I can't wait to get involved helping clients and styling homes again!

This year (fingers crossed) is going to be a good ol' busy one….. My book nearly ready, I'm working with an incredible agent and by the end of the year I should have a chunk of qualifications under my belt so I'm taken super seriously in the world of design!!

Lastly I need to share a little bit of Tuesday excitement! One of my heroines Abigail Ahern is only going to be bringing out an amazing paint range!! HURRAH! It will be a small range of beautiful hues that you can't currently get anything close to or as good as on the market!! Ive always had to mix my own paint as I can never seem to find the right shade, so I'm super thrilled Abigail is bringing out her own range, I just know they are going to be divine! So I'm now waiting until she unveils her range in March to re paint the living room………….. I can hear Mr G cheering!

Spicy Hangover eggs

So these aren't strictly to be saved for a good hangover, they make a great post sunday lunch supper. My children adore these too, I just opt for a little less spice.

Ingredients to make 4

8 Smoked bacon rashers
1/2 Chilli (more if you really want to heat it up)
4 tbsp Salsa
A handful of good Cheddar or Gruyere cheese, grated
4 eggs
Chopped chives
Salt and pepper

Method

Pre heat oven to 180/350 degrees

Chop the chilli removing seeds, add to the salsa and mix

Grease 4 compartments of a muffin tin, layer up each compartment with 2 rashers of bacon, then a good dollop of your salsa mix, add some grated cheese then crack an egg on top, finishing with a sprinkling of chives and a twist of salt and pepper.

Pop in the oven for 20 mins until the eggs aren't wobbly

African print play pants

I've been making my children clothes for ages, I love the feeling I get when they are romping about in something I've made for them.

I stumbled across some pretty darn amazing fabric on line, African wax printed fabric and instantly fell HEAD OVER HEELS! I decided to make Arthur some play pants, harem style…easy to run around in and don't restrict any movement (was that a bad idea?!)….. and now have orders from Archie…. so better get cracking!

African wax print fabrics are made by printing the patterns in wax on the cloth and then dyeing the fabric. The fabric, which is 100% cotton soaks up the dye, excluding the portions whee the dye was applied. The wax is broken off by machine. Patterns are then printed on the fabric again with other colours.

I'm hugely into bold prints right now and have been using them in projects for my home and adore the vibrancy and playfulness they bring, so seeing my bouncy, happy, semi-feral children adorned in these is pretty fitting!

This weeks up cycle - cardigan lounge set for wee Bunny

This week has been the start of the real winter BRRRRRRRR'S, come 4:30pm the log burner is on at full blast and so are the cosy slacks.

For a while i've been searching for a super cosy, soft, quality and snuggly lounge set for the boys and especially little Arthur who has the most softest and sensitive skin, I did find a few, but I found was either £100 plus, utter dross or even worse, the unbreathable sweat inducing cheapo onsie's!

So I decided to make my own for them, starting today with a set for Bunny (Arthur). I found a wonderfuly soft and cosy cardigan in a charity shop, it was a ladies size 14, after a thorough launder I rearranged the arms into trousers with an elastic waist and the front and back into a little cardigan with a blanket stitched neckline, hey presto Thursday's up cycle!

He seems to love it, I offered to change him for dinner and he point blank refused... so I'm guessing thumbs up all round!

I'm thinking of making a few more, starting with Archie's over the weekend, i have a super soft grey marl cashmere cardigan with his name written all over it!

Visiting Padstow - Rick Stein's seafood restaurant and vintage treasure!

While on our travels in sunny Cornwall we took a day trip to Padstow, it was a little soggy but as always oh so worth it... if you ever get the chance to visit Padstow please please treat your self to a long lunch at Rick Stein's Seafood restaurant, i first visited The Seafood restaurant with my brother in-law a few years ago (he and i sharing a mutual love for seafood) we ordered 2 glasses of champagne and the "Fruits de mer", people around us sighed and "aaaaaaahed" thinking we where celebrating an engagement or anniversary...this was more then a little awkward seeing as i value him as close as a blood relative but it was worth the moment or two of blushing! Have you ever tasted the true taste of the ocean? A collection of freshly caught sea creatures arranged perfectly on ice in the form of a towering volcano! A party to my senses.... I will always remember that lunch as one of the best 2 hours spent eating amazing food and sipping bubbles in my life!

On our way home we passed a vintage warehouse called Goose shed, nearly causing Adam cardiac arrest as I screamed STOOOOOOOP he did a perfect emergency stop and off i skipped towards a magnificently arranged display of vintage architecture and home wares.

Set over 2 floors Goose shed is a haven for a vintage home ware lover (thats me!) There's quite a masculine and industrial feel about the shop and everything's extreamly tactile you do find yourself smoothing dresser tops, opening draws and turning taps on reclaimed bathroom sinks.
With so much of their time quite obviously spent over each item cleaning, restoring and shabby chic'ing the price does reflect accordingly....now......contrary to popular belief and possibly because i am on a TV show called Superscrimpers, I'm NOT cheap.....i don't buy something because its cheap and i don't scrimp on quality, if i have to pay the right price because something is worth it i will...and this collection by the Goose shed is one of those places where quality really shows its self and you will be damed if you can find anything like any of there wonderful pieces anywhere in an antique shop or online auction site for any less! I very nearly came home with a stunningly cute feather filled vintage sofa and if i'd won the roof box debate Adam and I had before we set off for St. Ives we would have lobbed all of our clothes up top and i'd be coming home with a beautiful new bottom rester. Needless to say I didn't win and I didn't come home with a new amazingly comfortable and chic sofa....Darn!

Our half term break in St Ives

We celebrated Archie's first half term in our most favourite place in the world, St Ives, we flock down to our not so secret little hidy whole every year, Number 2 the saltings, a wonderful little converted Fish cellar on Porthmeor beach. We have gathered so many wonderful and happy memories over the years and hope to carry on doing so for as long as the little fish cellar will have us!

You will find us Gay's mostly larking somewhere along Porthmeor beach, with rosy wind slapped cheeks and wellies full to the brim with sand, sometimes possibly looking little vexed due to the children insisting on diving fully clothed head first into the sea.... But non the less we are terribly happy there....... Nothing a quick wash in the kitchen sink and a change of clothes can't fix!

If you ever get the chance to visit St Ives, and if you haven't I strongly recommend you give it a whirl, spend a day strolling along it's beautifully cobbled streets and popping in and out of its vast number of galleries and vintage shops, you wont be dissapointed.

THE place to eat and sip coffee in St Ives is at The hub, its super cool decor and ubre trendy staff attract an array of coffee and craft beer lovers, its major plus is that it's child and dog friendly too, we visit nearly every day for a pre beach coffee and cake boost (try their divine lemon drizzle cake) or a post windy walk late lunch, i can highly recommend their devilishly good baked eggs with possibly a side of beans and burned ends, and maybe a mug of chilli each for the smalls..... a must if visiting.

I always feel a little wave of sadness upon leaving St Ives but happy to know we will be back soon.

Toffee apples

Autumn means to me, beautiful scenery, puffs of smoke leaping out of chimney tops, woolly jumpers, crunchy leaves, morning mist and my favourite treat....TOFFEE APPLES!

Seeing the first pile of toffee apples teetering high on a shop shelf means the season has finally changed...I tuck my bikini and flip flops safely to bed and drag out my hoards of knitwear.....Let the cold commence!

Making your own delicious toffee apples is super easy and can be knocked up in under an hour, pop then in a picnic hamper and you will be dearly thanked on long autumn walk they are also a great way to keep the older children going long after bed time on bonfire night!

For this recipe you will need a sugar thermometer, you can buy these from any good hardware store, cook shop or supermarket and cost between 5 and 10 pounds.

Ingredients

6-8 Apples Braeburn or Discovery work best

100g Golden caster sugar

120g Demerara sugar

25g Butter

100ml water

2 tbsp Golden syrup

1 tsp Cider vinegar

Method

Wash the apples thoroughly under very hot running water then dry with a clean towel.

Push a lolly stick or wooden kebab stick (sharp end removed) into the middle through the stalk end.

Line a baking sheet or a tray with parchment paper and lightly butter the surface of the paper.

Place a heavy bottomed pan, try and use a high sided pan if possible, over a low heat and tip in the golden caster sugar, the dermerara sugar and water, after the sugar has completely melted stir in the cider vinegar, golden syrup and butter. Pop the thermometer into the pan and bring the mixture to the boil and cook without stirring until it reaches 150 degrees celsius (hard cracking point) this will take a good 20 ish minuets but keep an eye on it, toffee burns really quickly if left.

Once you have reached 150 degrees celsius remove the pan from the heat and tilt the pan to one side. dip and swirl your apples until coated well then pop them on the baking sheet, allow to cool thoroughly before taking that first crunch!

To wrap them I simply cut squares out of some parchment paper and tied with a sandwich bag wire you could use a ribbon.

Salted Pistachio Praline

My husband adores sweet and salty flavours together, his all time favourite treat is the salted peanut ice cream they make and sell at Sundae's child, the most amazing ice cream parlour at the end of our street.

This morning i made Adam a little bag of sweets to take to work tomorrow... something to munch on as an afternoon pick me up (but I'm pretty certain they will be gone before his morning meeting)

This is an extremely delicious, quick and easy recipe, about 15 mins from start to finish...plus a little cooling time

Ingredients

150g Salted roasted pistachios, shells off and roughly chopped

5tbsp water

200g Granulated sugar

A handful or 2 of sesame seeds

Method

Line a baking tray with some silicone paper

Pop a dry frying pan on medium heat and chuck in the sesame seeds, they will brown within a min or 2 so keep an eye on them, as soon as they start turning a light golden colour they are done, empty them out of the pan onto a plate and pop to one side

Heat the water and sugar in a heavy based saucepan over a medium heat, slowly bring to the boiled allowing the sugar to dissolve, then raise up heat so it starts to bubble, it will turn an amber colour, don't stir the mixture but swirl the pan from time to time so that the sugar colours evenly.

Chuck in the nuts and sesame seeds and cook for another min, stirring so that everything is coated in the wonderful glossy sugar.

Pour onto the baking tray staying untempted to pop any in your mouth until it has cooled... I learned the hard way once...YOWSERS..... and leave to cool.

Once cooled break into pieces and store in an airtight container

SKIP DIVING!

Im not sure wether this is "normal" but I feel a huge rush of excitement fill my brain whenever my eyes catch a glimpse of a stuffed full skip!

Allot of the furniture in our house has at some point in its life been in and dragged out of a skip of some sort and either cleaned up or up cycled.

I've found amazing treasures, like my latest find, this AMAZING chesterfield leather armchair, found simply but stumbling across a skip full of someones unwanted junk (as my mum always says, one mans junk is another mans treasure)

So, there are some unwritten rules to skip diving, you can't just go jumping in your nearest giant bin in the hope of finding a pot of gold!...Here are my 3 rules, these should keep out on the right side of your neighbour and the law!

1) Don't go out actively looking for a skip or house clearance, chances are you won't find any, keep your new found hobby loitering at the back of your mind ready to expect the unexpected waiting around any corner.

2) ASK,ASK, ASK, ALWAYS ASK! The person who the skip belongs to may not want you digging around there old belongings, although chances are if you tap on there door and ask very nicely with a smile you'll get the nod.

3) Wear boots and gloves, I keep wellys and thick gloves in my car...not just for moments like this.....You never know when you will need them living in these 'ear parts..... Flip flops or Toms are not a great way to protect your pedicure from shards of glass or worse!

Lastly don't forget to share with your friends, you never know when they will return the favour. Skip diving may not be for you, and thats totally fine, saves all the treasure for me!!!

Chocolate and beetroot brownies

When I was a wee squirt of a girl I HATED beetroot, I thought They.Were.The.Pits…. along with the noted and certified child hater brussel sprouts, I would not touch the things……alas time has passed and I hear my former self heaving with horror as I regularly tuck in to those delicious scarlet and emerald gems without a care for my scouring and disgusted inner teen.

I had a hoard of beetroot left over from last week, we were out all weekend so I didn’t get the chance to shove them in a roasting tin with a rib of beef and I’m certainly not one to rebel against tradition and have a roast on any other day then a Sunday…….so, come Tuesday my little basket of crimson baubles where going dangerously soft and needed using up fast!

Their saviour came in the form of a bar of dark chocolate I had kicking about at the back of the cupboard and some well out of their sell by date and slightly too hard to cut vanilla pods that needed to be used before they came more of a hardened weapon then divine treat… Chocolate beetroot brownies….oh yes please, these will not only leave you satisfied with a giant chocolate slap, but, being wheat free and lighter in your belly will also NOT leave you longing for a brownie induced nap.

*To prepare your beetroot for this recipe you will need to nip the leave off of your fresh beetroot, the chuck them into a pan of water, bring to the boil and let simmer for about 45-50 mins, drain and leave to cool then using rubber gloves slip the skins off*

Ingredients

200g dark chocolate cubed

200g unsalted butter, plus a smidge more for greasing

300g beetroot, cooked and finely grated

3 eggs

1 vanilla pod

200g caster sugar

50g cocoa powder

50g rice flour

I teaspoon baking powder

100g ground almonds

Method

Lightly grease and line a rectangular tin that is about 30 x 20 cm (ish) then pre heat the oven to 180 degrees C/gas mark 4.

Pop the butter and chocolate into a heat proof bowl and set it over a pan of simmering water, allowing it to blissfully melt, make sure the water isn’t touching the bowl, then remove from the heat.

Put your grated beetroot into another bowl and add the eggs one at a time and then the sugar, cut your vanilla pod down the middle lengthways and using the back of the knife to scrape seeds of of the middle add to the bowl and mix well.

Sift the rice flour, cocoa powder and baking powder into another bowl (sorry for the washing up!) then mix in the ground almonds.

Stir the beetroot mixture into the melted chocolate mixture then carefully fold in the dry ingredients.

Pour the mixture into your baking tin and pop it in the oven for 35 – 40 mins, until it is just firm to the touch. Remember that brownies are supposed to be gooey in the middle so when you insert a skewer it will come out quite sticky…..just makes it all the more glorious!

Let it cool in the tin the cut into giant glutinous squares.

Lemon and Earl Grey Shortbread

This is a MUST if you love Shortbread with a cuppa, it's all in one! Result!

I came up with this recipe after being inspired by someone i saw using bagged tea in cakes....I have to admit, it's divine, so gloriously subtle it's almost quite dainty!

.Ingredients.

175g/6oz plain flour
Pinch of salt
55g/2oz caster sugar plus extra for sprinkling
115g/4oz butter, chopped into chunks
2 Earl Grey tea bags, tear open the bags to remove the tea, discard the paper bags.... I used Twining's
Unwaxed lemon zest, finely grated

.Method.

Pre heat oven to 150'C/300'F/Gas mark 2.

Grease a 20cm (ish) tart or cake tin (TIP.... I keep a knob of real butter in my fridge so it's nice and hard, makes it so much easier and less messy to grease a tin and when you're done just lob it back in the fridge for next time).

Mix together the flour, salt, sugar, Earl Grey tea and grated lemon zest in a bowl, then rub in the butter, mix until it forms a soft dough, don't over work the dough or your end result will be like you're chewing on an eraser!

Press the dough into the greased tin, if you're not using a tart tin maybe use a fork to make imprints around the edges to make it look fancy pants.

Mark eight pieces with a knife and prick all over with a fork.

Pop in the oven for 45-50 minutes, until the shortbread is firm and just coloured.

Leave it to cool a little in the tin then sprinkle with caster sugar. Cut the portions then remove and leave to completely cool on a wire rack.

Paper heart garland, superscrimper style!

WARNING: SUPER QUICK AND ADDICTIVE CRAFT!

I showed this on Channel 4s Superscrimpers and also while I was hosting a talk at The ideal home show, they where shown as Christmas decorations but Truth be told, these adorable paper hearts are for all year round and I currently have my kitchen wall teaming with the beauty's, and the joy is, they take 5 minuets to make but look super complicated and you in turn super crafty and smart..... WINNER!

Here's what I did.

Cut 6 strips out of you some pretty paper (I used pages from an old dog eaten/unreadable book) you need to cut 2 of them at 12cm x 2cm, 2 at 10cm x 2cm and 2 at 8cm x 2cm.
Take some string that's about 15cm (ish) and fold it in half (making a loop)
now you need to make a sandwich with your string and paper, so, take your two 12cm strips and sandwich them either side of your string making sure the middle of the looped string is at the top of the strips and the cut ends of string are running towards the middle of the strips of paper.
IMPORTANT...if you are using paper with writing on it, the writing needs to be upside down at this point....so the top is effectively the bottom.....gettit!
now take your 2 10cm pieces and sandwich them either side of the 12cm strips, making sure the strips and string are all level at the top.
then finally make a sandwich with the 2 8cm strips.
grab a staple and clip the layers together, make sure your nice and firm so the string doesn't fall out!
NEARLY FINISHED! Now flip it over and pull down the 2 8cm strips so the ends meet together, then the 10cm strips, then the 12cm strips, making sure the ends are held together and lined up neatly like a deck of cards! Clip together with a staple.
give it a little jig and pull and your DONE! if my instructions are any good they will look like the picture above!
You can tie tonnes of them onto a long length of string and smirk with smirky smugness when your friends ponder with glee at your hand crafted garland......"oooh your so crafty arn't you" *side eyes*

Lamp Upcycle

I took this old lamp I used to use as a prop in my old shop out of the depths of the shed a wee while back with the full intension of giving it an upcycle...in fact now i'm not working on Superscrimpers this side of Christmas ive gone crazy crafting mad and am upcycling the back log of gems screaming out for love ive been collecting over the summer!....I promise ill blog it

So this is what ive been up to...starting with the "old lamp".

So, i super simply slapped on a couple of coats of regular household chalk based emulsion in tapestry green then a little varnish, covered the shade in a flippin adorable floral fabric, Cath Kidston for Ikea, cutting out the sections and sticking on using fabric glue.... DONE... so easy and looks a beaut under my stairs next to the toy chests/suitcases.

I LOVE a bit of upcycling and still to this day get a feeling of utter smugness with every home make!

About me and my little past...

I was told that i don't really give much up...about the 'real me'.
Well a little story about me (there is so many, not so interesting ones but a few 'grounding ones')
I usually keep this very close to my chest but i shall divulge this, mainly to expose this 'illness' and hopefully give a little hope to those in a similar situation...

I have had since i was about 18 a tumour in my pituitary gland (in my brain) it is (touching wood) benign and staying put, i was told that i would always find it hard to have children...this took its toll on me emotionally for so many years and stole waves of my tears, i honestly thought there was no hope, any road with drugs and the magic of the wonderful doctors at the Royal South HANTS hospital i managed to conceive my first...shortly followed by my second!

It all started when i kept on getting head aches (bastard head aches) that would just stay....and i was getting symptoms of a pregnant woman...mood swings, thick head of hair e.c.t....BUT i couldn't put an ounce of weight on!! So....i shipped myself off to the doc's for what i thought would be a diagnosis of being under weight and a smoking habit of 30 a day (i was a wisp of a girl) plus maybe just having my dads teeny stealth thinny thin genes!
I had a blood test, i was told 'they would not rule out cancer'....words that will still haunt me to my grave
I had a brain scan...MRI.... its was odd but ok
I then met a specialist who told me i had a tumour in my pituitary gland....... BENIGN!!! Holy shit was i relieved and they chucked me on a course of drugs....BUT i would find it super hard to have sprogs and would more then likely only conceive with IVF, so after what seemed a life time of 'trying' Mr G and i looked into IVF... now.... it happens allot, apparently, you can't have kids yet so, look into IVF, buy a new extremely expensive car, buy a house on a street that's known as 'dead mans shoes', fill it with a load of shit that causes you a plethora of debt THEN...oh look what happened....the test says YES....YES....bloody YES!
So, 10 years along i have been blessed with 2 beautiful babies.... and I'm honestly aware that I'm totally lucky and lucky beyond words!

I know for a fact that there is so many woman that are at the cusp of this diagnosis and need to know that there IS hope and 'normality' can still happen.

TWINKLE SHOES!!!!!!!

I popped a picture on Twitter @ the stunning Sophie Ellis-Bextor this week of my Glamtastic shoes i custom....anyway, cutting a long story short i have been asked to tell all how i do it...it's so so so easy, costs next to naff all, will take you an evening and looks AMAZE!!!!!

So here goes......

TWINKLE TOES AVEC FABBO FAIRY FEET!

What you need:

*Fabric covered shoes (Patent and shiny just don't seem to look as nice)

*Fabric glue (i use Hi-Tack glue as that seems to work the best for me and isn't uber expensive)

*DIAMONDS! I get mine from my local fabric shop for 99p for a handful if you dont have a local get eBaying!

*Wooden nail stick (Superdrug or chat up your local nail bar for a free one!)

What you do:

Now it all depends on how POW your feeling, do you want diamond smoothered heels...heels and wedge or THE WHOLE SHABANG!

Start at the edges and glue an area about the size of a pound coin, wet the end of the wooden stick (this makes picking up the twinkles easier) dab a diamond from your pile and pop it on the glue...keep going until you have a headache from all that sparkle!

I use about 5 bags usually.

Leave to dry over night and wear with pride!

Now then....i'm not being funny BUT these little beauts all hand done by my me with tres love look allot like a certain designer and fashionolas dream shoes begining with a G and ending with a A... G*NA.... they wont cost you £600 but they will cost you about a FIVER! NICE!

Now flee.....flee to your local craft shops for glue and sparkle...and take this cry with you "POWER TO THE CRAFTER!"

Homemade washing powder

I really should have put this post up a couple of Wednesdays ago as the number of people who have asked me for the recipe since i tipped it on Superscrimpers is HUGE! so I'm sorry for leaving it a week and a half but here goes......

Now then, now then, this is a REALLY great and cost effective alternative to regular washing powders, not only does it cut out unnecessary chemicals found in regular detergents, but when also used in conjunction with an energy efficient appliance, makes for a more ecologically sound alternative.

Leading Bold lavender washing powder is £3.75 kg Mine just near a quid 50 for the same and personally i think its better, AND leaves you feeling rather smug too!

What you need:

1 100% vegetable oil unscented soap I get mine from Waitrose for (£1.66 for 4 bars)

250 mls worth Washing Soda Crystals

Essential Oil

A large pan

What you do:

Using a large pan with about 1 pint of water and bring to the boil.

Whilst the water is being brought to the boil, completely grate the bar of soap add this to the boiled water

You must make sure that all the soap has been completely dissolved before taking off the heat.

Add 250 mls (made up to around 1 pint with water) of the washing soda crystals and around 20 drops of your chosen essential oil.

Bere in mind that lavender essential oil has been linked to hormone disruption in young boys and possibly pregnant women. (I never knew this before SuperScrimpers…no wonder my boys are crazy….i was mad on the stuff before i knew!) so i use lemon oil.

This will be more gloppy then powdery..so dont worry...

Free wild flowers

As you may know I'm a bit of a hedgerow foraging fanatic!

My sister Emma (Below left... has an on par obsession to mine for foraging and scrumping) and i sent ourselves skipping down the lane with scissors swinging from our pinkies and wicker baskets in our paws, ready to find some special wild flowers to adorn our diners!

We found our hooters being punched by the pong of a giant Lilac Bush (or Syringa vulgaris....just to impress you!) they are AMAZING flowers, i remember calling them Butterfly bushes as a sproglett as they attract swarms of beautiful insects.....any road just pick as many as you can carry (don't worry as long as your not trespassing its not illegal) and shove them willy nilly in a vase/jug/bucket.

......now go, go on, get out foraging for Lilac right now....and do NOT let me darn catch you in Waitrose buying posies when natures florist gives us such a beautiful bounty this time of year!

Elderflower Champagne

I've been off the radar for a bit as I've been working, planning and frantically thrifting for series 3 of Superscrimpers!

So on i go....... I love love love Elderflower, i love to drink it, eat it, sniff it, id roll in the stuff if i could, i simply cant get enough of those little white flowers for the short little snippet of the year it gifts us with its sickly sweet pong!

Ive been heckled to put up this recipe that my family and i use for THE most beautiful Elderflower Champagne........I know i know all the flowers have now gone...although if you are a true Elderholic like me you would have frozen some flowers to capture everlasting gloriousness of those little scrumptious blooms! SO..... please print off this page and keep it safe until next June, as soon as June hits, go out following your nose, sniffing the air for a sweet tea smell that makes your nostrils fizz when you shove your hooter into your newly found Elderflower bush THEN DON'T TELL A SOUL.....THAT SHRUB IS ALL YOURS! (well as long as it is actually on land that you have permission to pick from....if you get the nod, scrump away!)

This recipe makes about 4 litres, I'd suggest either using plastic screw top bottles (and let out some gas now and then) or those glass pop top bottles, and i always suggest keeping these outside or in the shed, while they are fermenting the can get a little excited and POP...i keep mine under the garden table...

Ingredients

4 litres hot water

700g sugar

Juice and zest of four lemons

2 tablespoons white wine vinegar

About 15 elderflower heads, in full bloom

A pinch of dried yeast (you may not need any but i always have had to use it)

What you do

* Put the hot water and sugar into a large container (i use my sons toy bucket after its had a swish of fairy liquid)and stir until the sugar dissolves, then top up with cold water so you have 6 litres of liquid in total.

* Add the lemon juice and zest, the vinegar and the flower heads and stir gently.

* Cover with clean muslin (I use old shiny clean muslin squares from when children where babies) and leave to ferment in a cool, airy place for a couple of days.

* After a couple of days have a peep and if it's not becoming a little foamy and obviously beginning to ferment, add a pinch of yeast.

* Leave the mixture to ferment, again covered with muslin, for another four days.

* Strain the liquid through a sieve lined with the muslin and decant into sterilised bottles

* Seal and leave to ferment in the bottles for at least a week before serving, chilled. The champagne should keep in the bottles for several months and gets better by the week. don't forget DO NOT to store it in the house...a sticky champagne mess after one has popped is not a nice thing to be cleaning up.

If you cant wait until next year, pop over mine, i have 26 litres of champagne bubbles ready for the ice!

Homemade fabric conditioner...super quick!

We all know that washing powders and conditioners cost heaps...its an expense that we could all do without...but just cant do without!

Here's a way to make your own at a fraction of the price, its kinder to your purse, kinder to your skin and kinder to the environment....WINNER!

What you need

* 3 cups water

* 2 cups white (clear) vinegar

* 1 cup of any (i use Superdrugs value brand) hair conditioner

What you do...

Firstly a cup is a cup, if all the ingredients in a recipe are measured out in ''cups'' then you can literally use a cup, so no need to go out buying any measuring equipment for this one!

Pop all your ingredients into a bowl and give i a really good whisk until is all combined, funnel it into a bottle or pour it into a storage pot and use it in exactly the same way you would your regular (a billion times more expensive) fabric conditioner! How easy was that!

THIS WILL NOT MAKE YOUR CLOTHES SMELL OF VINEGAR....PIGGY PACKED PROMISE!

TA DA!

Now go wash and be happy! x

I AM LOVING a bit of free sample wallpaper....i'm smack bang in the middle of building a collection of FREE samples to make a floral patchwork wallpapered wall......so OBSESSIVELY IN LOVE!

Here's a few ideas to set you in the mood for a bit of wallpaper sample thrifting.....maybe see you tomorrow in the home section of Cath Kidston! ;0) *Reaches for large shades and head scarf*

Quick kid proof upcycle

I've been looking for 6 non matching all wooden chairs for AGES so i can paint them in my long standing obsession (Annie Sloan chalk paint) can i find any.......... NO!

So until such time i find some i'm just going to have to make do and mend...i did a little upcycle that's perfect if you have fabric seats and kiddies, pets and/or are ridiculously darn clumsy with red wine (side eyes)

I used mismatched oil cloth (wipe clean heaven) found in the bargain bin in Cath Kidston, stapled the fabric on to the seats making sure the edges are folded neatly. Easy as that, took me literally 20 minuets and has certainly stopped my eye from twitching at all those stains!

In the mean time...if you happen to see 6 pretty awesome wooden dining chairs for sale/swap/trade/steal .......just hola!

Bathroom cabinet made SUPER EASY!

Howdy!
Sorry I've been off the radar for a couple of weeks.....I've been giving my house decorating a real full on attack while slotting a bit of skiing (or falling with no style) in the middle.

I've managed to build up a plethora of upcycling goodies of late and I'll be blogging about them, so keep 'em peeled.

First things first....

A quickie upcycle for you

BATHROOM CABINET CHEAPY CHEAPNESS!

I've been hunting for a couple of cabinets from car boots, charity shops the tip shops for yonks. FINALLY i thought i had better chuffing well put my years of upcycling to good use, get off my ample bottom and make some!

As i have made it pretty clear i have an unnatural love for anything wicker, i have it hidden and stacked up in every crevis of my house, any road, i took two (rescued from Little Arthur's AKA Thumpers room).

One had a bit of a dodgy lid so i ripped that off and got painting with some white bathroom paint, fitted a little shelf (some sweet Cath Kidston packaging i just couldn't chuck), a pretty curtain (used from some left over window dressing courtesy of the alps.....we'll chat about that next time)
and some little "stuff" pots in the form of vintage jelly molds. You can go to the bother of putting lots of shelves ect in but as im a little lazy and impatient so i use little Tupperware boxes...works a treat! TA DA!!!!

Hope you like, im super happy with them and they cost me NAFFIN!!!!

Bleach Print T-Shirt MOUSTACHE STYLE!

I've been meaning to give bleaching a t-shirt a go since i saw it being gloriously "tipped" by Gem on Superscrimpers, then a couple of days ago my Niece was doing the same thing for her home work ( i know... home work's got cool!) So ive decided to give it a whirl...

Of course the I LOVE MOUSTACHE thing isn't just a craze for me *side eyes*, i DO love a moustache, my Daddy (ledge') has a moustache and I LOVE MY DADDY!

So heres what Clairey did next;

you will need;

* A dark color tee

* Card

* Scissors

* Chalk or a fabric pencil

* Bleach

* Cotton bud

* An old magazine or newspaper

* Fabric pen (optional)

What you do;

* Lay the t-shirt flat

* Cut out a template using the card.

* Mark your motif on your tee with the chalk.

* Pop your magazine or newspaper inside the t-shirt to stop the bleach printing on the back

* Carefully paint the bleach on to your tee with the cotton bud.

* Now wait a bit...i takes a while.....maybe take some tea!

* When its reached the color you like, fling it strait in the wash.

* If you like when its out and dry, add little detailing with a fabric pen...up to you!

TA DAAAAAAAAA!!!

Vintage China Jewellery!

IT'S UP!

After toying with the idea for months of making my oh so much loved vintage china wearable, ive finally done it!

These little beauties look utterly fantazmic for summer and I CANT WAIT to team mine up with my little white vintage dress, Mums snake belt and my old lady chic loafers! BYE GUM ILL FEEL SNAZZY!

I've listed a handfull of my collection and they are beautifully quirky and scrummy! Im particually in love with the blue poppy bracelet and the yellow flower ring!

Baking with Archie - Yogurt cake

I'm possibly running away from my blog genre with this post but I just have to share!
My son loves cooking with me and at any given chance will drag his chair across my slate kitchen tiles *eye twitches* to help me bake and cook (Archie style)
I stumbled upon this recipe that literally can't go wrong (i say this as i'm crunching on egg shell) and is perfect for any budding baker to cook all on their own, it's called Yogurt cake as that's what's in it but also the main ingredients are weighed out using the tubs.....hence it's perfect for mini bakers!

You will need;

2 tubs whole milk yogurt (individual portion sized, about 126-175g each) fruity, non fruity it doesn't matter.

2 eggs

2 tubs of caster sugar

1 teaspoon of Vanilla essence

Just under one tub of vegetable oil

4 tubs of plain flour

1 1/2 tsp baking powder

2 tubs of fresh or frozen fruit or even choccy chips (optional but Archie used fresh blueberries and it was delicious!)

What Archie did next (with a little help from mummy with the hot bits);

Preheat oven to 190 degrees Celsius, grease a loaf tin or 9-inch round tin with a little veg oil.

Pop all of your wet ingredients in a bowl and give it a good mix then add your dry ingredients and mix again, Archie found using 4 spoons and a triceratops very helpful in aiding mixing, and then add your fruit or choccy....or a tub of both!

Tip all the batter into your tin and (with help from a chosen big kid) pop it in the oven for 35 mins, possibly an extra 5 mins if it fails the knife test

Finished!!!

I've vowed to let Archie take control of the kitchen every Saturday morning to whip up a storm.....so watch this space!
