Episode #019 - Salvage the good times...

Don't be alarmed by the static crackle between the intro, story, and end - it's deliberate, sort of a way of marking out the story from the rest of the podcast!

First of a two-parter, maybe a three-parter - hell, if it works, it may be the first of a long, long story.

This was meant to be used as an entry for the very first Monday's Musical Musings meme, which I failed to finish it for. Instead, the idea I had of losing your memory collided with another idea that came to me, about manipulating memories. This in turn is feeding into a third story that has been brewing for some time. So, we'll see if these elements all combine well, or whether the net result is just horrible...

For those who remember, we learnt a little of the events in Ewan's life in the [Fiction] Friday entry for 27 June 2008, so if you're interested, go check that out.

Another "no story" podcast. Man, this is really bad. And it's been waaaaay over a month since the last podcast. Yet, despite the gap in time, I have picked up some extra listeners. Admittedly, these extra listeners are writers I work with, but hey, it's still a result.

... that's not a euphemism by the way. Builders are in for close to a month, carrying out extensive repairs and redecoration. Massive upheaval throughout the house.

Plus with the race weekend coming up, and a few guests visiting soon, I honestly don't know when I'm going to have the ability to record a podcast for a good long time.

So, this may be a month long hiatus. In which case I really wish I hadn't put the first part of the story up already.

Forward planning Paul... you're doing it wrong.

Episode #016 - Stirling - Part 1

Welcome back, and finally, the long-promised "enviropocalypse" multi-part story which I'm calling Stirling.

In this first part, after a cryptic and garbled message, we are introduced to our main character Alex. Alex recounts his earlier life, at the end of the first decade of the 21st Century, prior to beginning university, and more importantly meeting Darius, our second main character. Darius will feature more in next week's episode, and over the course of the parts the reason behind the title Stirling will become clearer.

Episode #014 - Apocalypse? Now?

The first of two "enviropocalypse" stories (environment + apocalypse) - next week will see Redemption hitting the podcast feed, followed by my first attempt at a multi-part, episodic story. You can hardly contain yourself, I can tell...

The observant amongst you will have noticed that the intro music has changed - it is still from the same piece of music (by coincidence, called Apokalipsis), but hopefully it has less of the, in my older brother's words, "seventies porn movie" vibe... (I think that's what he said anyway...)

The Silent Hives was the first piece of writing that I put my name to in a public forum. Before, I had only posted things anonymously to the Creative Writing section on Gumtree. This was the first story I put my name to, and more importantly my web address! It's short, it's gloomy, it's a little twisted. I hope you like it.

Episode #013 - Lusting for an explanation

OK, so I made you wait for a week to get an explanation. I apologise.

This is a long, rambling, shambolic trip through my mind, and I spend the first eight or nine minutes spouting random nonsense and pseudo-psychological crap in an attempt to capture what I was thinking when writing The Inquisitor. I'm not sure I succeed.

But there is a happy ending - as a bonus you get to hear the alternative Lust story I wrote - as a sin it was a failure, but as a sweet little story of 18th Century Italian/Spanish nobility (I had Italy in mind, but you may think different) it turned out nicely.

Another short this week folks, and still no explanation of what the hell I'm talking about. All will be revealed on Easter Sunday... or will it? Yeah, actually, it will...

Oh, if you're wondering about the episode title, I don't mention it in the show, but I got an energy monitor for the house this weekend, and it is my new favourite gadget. Running my podcast equipment uses surprisingly little wattage. But boiling a kettle, using a hairdryer, or running an electric heater? Wow. Those things just eat power like it's going out of fashion...

Episode #009 - Angels and Mothers

Happy Mother's Day to all mothers out there. Especially those mothers who listen to their son's podcasts... :-)

This is a somewhat special edition of the podcast. This story is one of the very first things I wrote in 2007, around about mid-March, so almost one year ago exactly. A number of people have expressed their appreciation of this piece, with comments ranging from "over the top" (a poet called paisley) to "my favourite".

It was going to be recorded for the very first podcast when I planned to start them in April last year, but by the time I got round to recording the first show (in September!), the Sin stories were well underway, and I thought they would be nice and "podcastable")

So my writing year comes full circle. I hope you enjoy The Angel and the Path.

Episode #008 - Greed is good...

Ah crap. You mention somebody just once in your shownotes, and they come over and give you a bitchslap for being a smartass...

Greed is good. In fact greed is very good, because at long last I have got through all seven of these little snippets that have hung around my neck like a millstone. I didn't think anything would take as long as it took to write them. Turns out I was wrong, recording them has been a five month process to the very day. Go back through the archive and check if you don't believe me. 24 September 2007 was the first one...

So at long last, they are recorded, uploaded, published, whatever. All? Maybe not - there is an alternative Lust story that I might put up as a bonus (wait, aren't bonuses supposed to be good?)

I'm still working out the little niggles in the recording. On the playback I'm working through headphones, so everything sounds at a good volume level to me, but I've been told that on the last couple everything between intro and outro is at a very low volume, so if there are problems, please let me know.

Ever wanted to see where the magic happens? Here's what the recording studio looks like:

The mixing desk - sound comes in, I screw it up, sound goes out...

Note absence of pop filter, so the "p" sounds are still a little harsh. The USB thingy behind the microphone takes the sound from the desk to my Powerbook. I started off using Apple's Garageband, but I now use Sound Studio 3 by Freeverse.

And this is the full studio. Laptop, mixing desk, microphone, headphones, USB connector, gargoyles at the back of the desk surrounding the coffee plant, and the remains of a very pruned back bonsai. Trust me, this is all essential stuff...
