I met up with local talent Jarrett last Thursday at Passe-a-grille beach for a quick shoot. I love hooking up with local models for quick test shoots as they are a great way to hone my skills and try new things and also a great way to meet local talent. Since I began test shooting models in February I have put together a great contact list of local talent that are happy to work with me. Having connections like this in your area is super valuable and something I hope every aspiring photographer is doing.

Dana and I met up for a quick shoot this past weekend in downtown St. Pete and had a blast minus the insane heat we had to deal with. I have to give props to Dana for being such a trooper despite the heat she kept a smile on her face even when I asked her to jog past me a million times just to make sure I got the shot.

I have been thinking about those two things a lot lately. They are possibly the two most important things a photographer needs to do in order to be successful in the photography business. First, your style is what defines you as a photographer and also allows you to differentiate yourself in a very crowded market. Second, by discovering what it is you truly love to shoot you can put all your energy and focus into that specific niche of photography.

I had no idea what types of photography really appealed to me when I first started shooting I just new that I loved taking pictures. Over time though, I slowly began to develop a certain fondnessess for lifestyle oriented commercial and editorial photography with a little bit of travel photography thrown in there.

My love for lifestyle imagery became apparent when I began getting bored shooting inanimate objects, I craved something more challenging and unpredictable i.e. people. In addition to figuring out what it is I wanted to shoot by getting out there and shooting to begin with I also found myself spending tons of time on the web and at Barnes and Noble looking at magazines and researching photography.

Through all of the countless hours I spent on the internet and pouring over magazines like GQ, Esquire, Details and many others I developed an eye for the type of photography I was drawn to and not to mention I became extremely motivated to shoot as much as possible. Now here I am a little over 18 months since picking up a camera seriously for the first time with a pretty decent body of work so far but still a ways to go.

Now I encourage you to get your asses out there and shoot as much as you possibly can! Also, become obsessed with photography to the point that it consumes your every thought because without that passion and desire you are not going to go far as a photographer.

I did a test shoot with the lovely model April this Saturday at one of my favorite beaches in St. Pete. I picked up some snorkeling gear on my way to the shoot which turned out to be a pretty good idea. April and I shot for about an hour and here are some of my favorite images from the shoot.

What can I say about Madrid other that WOW! Madrid is so full of culture it oozes it. The citizens of Madrid live life to its fullest. They eat well, drink well, and most importantly they cherish what is really important in life like sharing great moments with the people closest to you. Needless to say Madrid is one of my favorite cities in the world and one I plan on visiting again and again. I hope you enjoy the images!

Florence

Here is a landscape image I shot of Florence with my 50mm. Normally I do not shoot landscapes with my 50mm but rather with my 20mm. I prefer the 20mm due to its wide angle and the awesome natural vignette it gives the images I make with it. The reason I was not able to to use the 20mm was because its focusing mechanism broke about 5 days into our trip, thus I was only able to use it while we were in Barcelona and Cinque Terre. For the remainder of our trip I was left with my 50mm and 70-200mm.

Orvieto, Umbria Region of Italy

During our trip through Italy and Spain my wife and I stopped of in Orvieto for a night. Three years ago my wife studied in Orvieto for 4 months and has wanted to go back ever since. Orvieto is the quintessential Italian town. It’s perched high above the Umbrian landscape on a tufa plateau and can be seen from miles away. The citizens of Orvieto stay true to their Italian roots and were perhaps some of the most polite people we met throughout our travels. Here are a few images from our time in Orvieto.

I finally have internet after a three day hiatus in the hills of northern Italy, thank god! Our trip is going great so far, our first stop was Barcelona, then we spent a few days in Cinque Terre and now we are in Florence. Below are some of my favorite images from Barcelona. Last night I randomly uploaded three images to complete my application on istockphoto.com which I started over a year ago and this morning was told I had been accepted. I have been really hesitant about joining istockphoto.com as I am more interested in breaking into the traditional stock photography market. However, i decided to try istockphoto.com until I can build my portfolio more and then eventually try getting accepted by places likes masterfile.com or gettyimages.com.

Since my style is a little edgier than your classic micro stock images, and when i say classic I mean those images of people in business suites working in a board room or a cute girl sitting on the floor working on her laptop, we have all seen those images. Personally I think there is a lot of room in the micro stock market for edgier more down to earth lifestyle and travel images, thus I plan on targeting those niches as I move forward with istockphoto.com.

Stay tuned for more posts on my journey in microstock photography. I am really interested in this market of photography and certainly plan on keeping it as part of my business as I move forward.

My First Wedding in the Bag!

This past Saturday I second shot a wedding with my good friend and fellow photographer Chad Jarae. Thanks Chad for giving me the opportunity to shoot with you! Lindsey and Matt were a super fun couple too shoot. They had their wedding at the Rusty Pelican in Tampa and it turned out to be a beautiful evening.

Shooting this wedding was an awesome opportunity for me to finally get out there and shoot in real time, all of the shoots I have done up until now have been model tests. Thus I am able to shoot another frame if I don’t like the results. You aren’t really able to do that during a wedding other than during the formal portraits and even then you are stressed for time.

All in all I had a great time and look forward to working with Chad again in the future.

Here is a shot I snapped while doing a test shoot this past weekend. There is something special about the images I make with the 20mm f2.8 and my 5D. The natural vignette the lens produces as well as the rich colors make this lens perfect for landscapes. This lens is going to get a serious workout during my trip to Europe next month.
