So there no posts for a week.......we were sanding around the clock prepping the outside cockpit and inside the wheelhouse. I guess I could have taken a picture of a pile of dust or maybe a clean boat builder in the morning vs a powdered boat builder in the afternoon. Sanding can give a good idea of the actual size of a boat, this boat is huge (lots of corners and curves to hand sand). In the picture the wheelhouse has been primed out and the area around the windows has been painted. Today the rest of the wheelhouse was painted (not pictured). I think the color choice will work well with the teak, tough to show in a photo though. Once all the wheelhouse paint is completed the windows can be reinstalled and the headliner can go up.

The truckload of teak has been milled up into usable pieces. Care was taken to minimize waste and we tried to estimate how much of each style of board we were going to need for this boat. Once everything is cut to fit and drilled out all the teak will need to be sanded and oiled. Then reinstalled and probably sanded and oiled again. Jeff and I have been working together this week getting the teak cut for the overhead. Two sets of hands on this type of job is a necessity, lots of "you drill this one while I cut this one" type stuff. We're making good progress and Jeff has been jumping up to help Dan Jr. with the painting.

A more unimpressive photo you will not find. Thicker teak was cut to fit around the entire perimeter of the trunk top, then thinner 2" slats run athwart ship (new word just added to my vocab, spellcheck doesn't even know what it means). Teak circles are being milled out to mount the dome lights on. Head liner provided by Soundown will be glued to 1/8" plywood and held up by these pieces of teak. Fiddles and moldings are also being fit and drilled. It will be impressive when its finished but I won't be able to get far enough away with my camera to show you. Possible video 360??

So I head out to the shop Saturday morning to begin this teak cutting madness and decide that it would be a good plan to put a new blade on the chop saw. Disassemble, old blade off, new blade on, reassemble, pull trigger, notice wobbly blade, realize that the chop saw's inner working are bent, price out a new saw online, decide on the saw that's right for the shop, drive to Lowe's, get the more expensive saw (that has the sliding feature) because its on sale and not "that much" more than the one I was going to get. Not much teak got cut on Saturday but the shop has a fancy new saw and for the sake of the saw I'm not letting anyone use it (other than myself) until all the teak has been cut.

At nearly 30 dollars per board foot every scrap has been saved. Most of these small pieces can be cut into bungs or used as test pieces when fitting longer pieces. Anything left over will be sold as high end camp firewood for 65 dollars a box. I was thinking I could market it by saying that burning teak keeps away the mosquitoes. We could set up a stand at the end of the driveway with a coffee can for people to leave payment. "What that smell??" "Oh that's just my teak firewood, whenever I summer in Maine I only burn the best."

Enough of that, but there will be content added now that parts are being added to the boat and the sanding is completed. Check in tomorrow for the courtesy rope lighting that Dan Jr. installed underneath the side decks.......

Two new boats to look at.

Forever Young and Gannet have been added to the "launched" section on the blog. Original plans called for some round Freeman hatches (one on either side of the windlass) However, once the hatches arrived they looked too industrial to be installed on the bow of a pleasure boat. Plan B was to make a stainless framed hatch that would hinge outward to allow access to the anchor rope/chain in the rope locker. Plan B was abandoned for Plan C when I saw this hatch in the Hamilton Marine catalogue and thought it might be a fix all. We wouldn't have to build the hatch and it creates the same amount of usable space as the custom hatch that we now don't have to make.

Two stainless steel Southco latches will hold the hatch down, and we were so impressed with these latches that we are going to use the same style on all the deck hatches (just a little bigger). As you can see the round hatch won't sacrifice much area over the triangular hatch that we now don't have to build. The word perfect is overused and seldom warranted but its a rare thing to stumble upon a product that just fits perfectly with the theme of a boat. This could be the greatest hatch that I've ever seen. Have I done an adequate job selling the idea of installing this hatch vs. building the hatch that we no longer have to build?

Running lights have been installed on either side of the fly bridge. Hella LED lights were used because they are

engineered for safety, reliability and high performance
(according to their web site....that you can visit by clicking on the blue word Hella above) Lights were installed low to limit the amount of light washing into the wheelhouse while running the boat at night. Hella lights will also be used for the anchor light, deck lights, and stern light (not pictured)

Hydraulic hoses have all been made and stationed (thesaurus claims that means the same thing as installed). To make the hoses measurements are taken and the hose is cut from the roll using a metal cutting chop saw. Ends are then pressed on using a hydraulic press that utilizes different sized dies to accommodate hose sizes from 1/4" to 1 1/4" inch. If we need larger hoses they need to made off site at Traction Heavy Duty Parts or Motion Industries.
These hydraulic hoses are 1/2" line and are run from the cylinder (large black part) through the auto pilot pump (silver and black motor). Hoses then travel through PVC pipe to the engine room where they are split into two sets of hoses (one to the lower helm and one to the upper helm). Hoses to the upper helm had to be extremely long (32 feet!!) because of the path they needed to take (through the starboard cabinet, up the arch leg, through the starboard upper bench, into the fly bridge forward area, and into the upper helm station). A smaller line connects the upper helm to the lower helm and the lower helm to the auto pilot pump to act as an oil equalizer. The upper helm has a vented fill cap to fill the system with oil and to allow for expansion as the oil warms. Expansion should be minimal because this is a manual system and very little oil is being moved (movement generates heat) where a power steering system would have a steering pump running constantly heating the oil to the point were it could overflow a tank or drool out a vented fill cap. Hydraulic oil expansion is equal to change in temp (in Fahrenheit) times volume of system (in cubic inches) time .0005. So for example if your 100 gallon hydraulic system (231 cubic inches times 100 gallons) heated up 35 degrees the oil would expand 404.5 cubic inches (1.75 gallons). Enough to make a large mess, this system will have less than 5 gallons of hydraulic oil and will never heat up enough to pose an expansion problem.

My idea of where the windlass switch and trim tab switch should go on the lower helm station. An upper control for the trim tabs have to go on the fly bridge and the secondary control for the windlass (wireless control) is already installed and working. If this location is acceptable then holes can be cut and more loose ends (wires) can be tied up.

SHOP NEWS SHOP NEWS SHOP NEWS
Kendall gelled the forward section of the hull on Native Son.
John made the helm plates for the previously mentioned helms.
Jeff was painting then help running the hydraulic hoses.
Clay fit stainless steel rail on the spray rails on the 38' Northern Bay and the 32' Osmond Beal.
Dan Jr. was sick.
Dan Sr was injured on the job.
I was making hydraulic hoses, ordering lights, taking pictures, and running wire. The staging isn't strong enough to hang a chain and padlock. You can't write a message on a piece of rope. A pile of wood could be jumped over. No one messes with the tape, ever.

On Native Son all the fiberglass work has been completed and Kendall has been gel coating as this project creeps to the finish line. John finished up the exhaust system and built the new radar stand (last picture). Dan patterned the windows (two weeks ago) and sent them to a Canadian company called Marinelite and we are waiting on a price quote for the windows. Looking back at the photos of this boat I have done a horrible job documenting this one. Moved the side decks, new wheelhouse, and new deck and most of it never was digitally recorded.

The new radar stand installed. Not finished and not as neat as it is going to be but I think you are starting to get the picture. This is much easier than it looks just cut the wire to length crimp an end on and connect. Do that 300 to 400 times and BOOM, completed electrical system. Things I fail to mention in my explanation: correct wire sizes, correct fuse sizes, maximizing limited space, back lit panels, shunts used to measure 12 volt amperage being used, 110 AC outlets getting power from an inverter or through an inverter (from a generator or shore power).

The overhead in the forward cabin is set for head liner. Wherever the is plywood now there will be teak in the future. Gaps will be filled with wires for lights and a fan. Headliner will be glued to 1/8" plywood and will be installed in panels with all the seams hidden by 2" pieces of teak. While I'm talking about the forward cabin Jeff, Dan Jr., and I spent all day yesterday sanding everything that needed to be prepared for paint. Once smooth everything will be primed then painted with a Hatteras Off-White flattened to a semi-gloss finish.

Deck hatches have been glassed in and all the covers have been built. There is a starboard shelf that you can barely see in the cabinet on the right. I was going to say the starboard shelf in the starboard cabinet but it did not read well. You see, the starboard side of the boat is the right side (when looking forward) and starboard is a brand of plastic used on boats. I could have capitalized the S in starboard (plastic) but that could have been misleading and surely it wouldn't have gotten the point across that there were two different usages of the same word in the same sentence. I was unsure how I was going to fill the space to the left of this picture........crisis avoided.

Head and shower area primed and painted. Digital photography with flash makes telling that this color is anything but white difficult. And the reflection of the flash is making it look like the paint is super shiny when it isn't. The color will look better once the teak (in the back of the truck) has been installed. For those of you that don't know, teak is really expensive. In fact the teak in the bed of this truck is worth more than the truck.

Organization is the key to success. Now that the systems are being punched out, getting my hands on the right manual in a timely fashion is very important. We've been collecting instruction manuals for a while and the old filing system (piles of paper) had ceased working. This will also make thing easier for the owner once the boat is in the water.

4000 visits!!!!!

pre-blog visits from 1/1/2007 to 2/23/2009.........6202 in 784 days........8 visits a day

post-blog visits from 2/11/2009 to 6/30/2009..........4014 in 139 days..........29 visits a day

i know no one cares about these stats, but its pretty cool.

23' Crowley Pics for the world (specifically for CT)

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; I have finished ten new lobster boats to date. Most of the boats I finished myself, I fish them for a season then sell them.

This project was different, the owner was a local guy who aw all of my boats and wanted on e as a pleasure boat for his family. We finished it over two winters, finished off bare bones so he could use it for season #1 and decided how he wanted to finish off the interior. This is what we came up with, full mahogany interior with a teak deck. Notice the rounded corner that forms the head, there is a quarter piece of PVC pipe glassed to plywood which I then covered with a mahogany veneer.

The Holland is powered with a 480 hp. Cummins which pushes "Caroline" to 26 knots. She holds 300 gallons of fuel and 60 gallons of water. She has a 2-1 ZF. gear turning a 2" shaft with a wet keel. The transom door and the swim platform are a must for family fun. The pot hauler is just for hauling the anchor, there will never be any bait aboard. All the hardware is bronze to give the boat that older look. The pot hauler is the only stainless steel on the boat, the owner would love me to find an old bronze unit.

Clark Island built and glassed the benches and the engine box. They did all the metal work including all the bronze fabrication. Everything they do is well thought out, take a close look at the radar mast. The 12 volt DC distribution panel is the largest panel located at the top of the photo. In the middle is the 110 volt AC panel. The bottom panel is the battery switches (discussed in previous posts). The red and black spaghetti will be sending the power to the various equipment on the boat. Only about 10 percent of the wire is visible in this picture the rest was pull off to the left so I would have room to work. Looking at all the wires at once it presented as a huge job but once the connections started being made the job is getting smaller all the time. Choosing which breaker will be controlling what piece of equipment is the tough part, after the job is done you want the breakers to be arranged in some type of order (all the lights together, all pumps together, electronics together, etc...) About needing a short electrician, to work on the back side of this panel you need to be standing on the raised step where the toilet is going to live. The headroom when standing on that step is around 5'7" and unfortunately I'm around 5'11" (not tall by any means but about 4" too tall for this project) so I spent all day with my head compressed into my shoulders. 2 or 3 more days of discomfort should put a good dent in the electrical system.

This impressive shot of the 32' Osmond is the planning stage of the forward floor construction. In trying to keep the proportions of the boat somewhat correct we worked backwards from the trunk height and then using a proposed headroom (approx 6'3") got a good idea of what the forward floor was going to look like. These measurements could be tweaked to make a little more floor space, the shape of this hull allows for raising a floor 2" and creating 31% more floor space (those numbers are fabricated and being exaggerated to illustrate my point). As long as something happens on this boat everyday, we should be able to launch it by February......

A couple of days ago I was talking about a slight wheelhouse modification on Native Son, here is a picture of the completed modification. This boat is now being prepped for gel coat and paint. Window patterns have been taken although the owner may go with Plexiglas windows for the time being. John finished the new radar stand yesterday and Kendall has been making good progress sanding and taping. Clay moved the wheelhouse side without complaints and he was able to get it done quickly.

This "skiff" is in the shop for some minor work. So far we've painted the bottom and put a boot stripe on. Dan made a plastic bracket for the hydraulic trim tab pump. Once he mounts the pump six wire connections and two hoses will be the only thing holding up this job.

Thanks for checking back in for the words of content, 11pm as promised.

Last day of photo only content. I was able to try out my father's day present, a brand new SkyCaddie (very cool). Its a golf GPS that give accurate yardages to landmarks on each hole (pins, water, fairway, bunker, etc...). It was probably the greatest gift that a one year old has ever given to her father. Thanks Madelyn.

So through the power of the interwebs I found this guy that was trying to decide between building a windshield with 3 or 4 windows and for some reason I took some interest in helping with the choice. The hand drawn picture is from the kid building the boat (in Kansas City) and it shows the difference between the 3 and 4 window layout. I tried to explain some stuff in a response but words weren't getting the point across so I made and example computer drawing. I sent him an email asking about the actual dimensions so I could make a more accurate model (don't ask me why). Using the new information I made a 3D model of what the windshield would look like with 4 windows and then offered my opinion that 4 window would look sick (in a good way) compared to 3 windows. Clark Island Boat Works has no vested interest in the boat and yet I was compelled to do this. I will be seeing a doctor about this problem in the next few weeks unless the symptoms go away. As I was making the 3D model my wife was keeping an eye on the clock and kept asking me what the hell I was doing. Once it got to the 45 minute mark she told me to stop or get the kids address and send him a bill. He'll probably go with three windows and all my efforts will be for nothing. Oh well, it was fun to play on the computer and I think it came out pretty nice.

Clear communication is the key.

Sometimes when doing these custom projects an owner's wishes are not completely understood and this can lead to problems. Sometimes what we want to do or what we think will work the best influences our decisions during a project. Sometimes we have to make changes based on customer reactions. Native Son needed one major change, fixing the starboard side of the wheelhouse. During the design phase poor communication (on both sides) led to the wheelhouse being built offset to the port side. Once the owner saw the progress I could tell that he was bothered by it. I decided right away that it was not worth arguing and promised that I would make sure that the problem was solved. Most of the time when work has to be undone/redone the toughest part is just making the choice to start. Frustration about changes is normal but at Clark Island Boat Works the customer is always right. Anyway we were able to cut the starboard part of the windshield out make a few cuts and shift the front and side window to a more symmetrical location. This is going to improve the look of the wheelhouse and make for a very happy boat owner.

Big wires on the 38' Northern Bay. This is the back side of the custom battery switch panel that we fabricated out of aluminum and had powder coated black (to match the other electrical panels). Three switches were bolted to the aluminum and then the aluminum was bolted through the panel on the starboard side of the companionway. The switch located to the left is for the engine batteries, the switch to the right is for the house batteries, and the switch in the middle connects all the batteries on the boat. This middle switch could be called the emergency crossover connection, it will give the user the ability to start the motor with the house batteries if he accidentally kills the start batteries. Most of these wires are 4/O (some 2/O on the shorter runs) and all the lugs have been crimped on with a ginormous set of crimps. Once the ends are crimped heat shrink wrap is used to seal all the connections.

1/2" Plywood has been screwed to the overhead inside the wheelhouse of the 38' Northern Bay. This will be the layout of the teak that will be holding up the headliner. The photo won't show all the required steps and really it isn't all that exciting of an explanation so I just skim over it. Measurements, Pencil Lines, Cut Plywood, Drill Plywood, Cut Plywood, Drill Overhead, Drive Screw, Repeat. Now that the plywood is up all the wires can be run to power the overhead lights, fans, and wipers. Every wire has to be run individually (to fit under the headliner) and clipped every 4". I'm going to try to get most of the wires clipped up tomorrow (Sunday) but it might be a two day project. Holding drills over your head all day can be rough on the shoulders.

SHOP NEWS SHOP NEWS SHOP NEWS

Dan Jr has been sanding, painting, and fiberglassing hatch frames.
Jeff helped me with the wheelhouse overhead and did all the big wiring (picture 2).
John made some exhaust modifications and made a new radar stand for Native Son.
Kendall has been sanding, painting, and fiberglassing wheelhouses.
Clay had to do some skiff repair and fixed the wheelhouse on Native Son.
Dan has been looking into hull prices and availability for all the boats we have to build.
I've been keeping everyone busy, taking pictures, returning emails, and working on boats.

Pictures Only.........Its Content.

The old Kara Lee, now Breaker.
