On July 1, Harold M. Wingood, associate provost/dean of admissions and financial aid, will begin his new post as executive director of the Memphis Academy of Science and Engineering.

Wingood joined Clark in 1995 and was involved with the University's initiative to partner with the Worcester Public Schools to create the University Park Campus School (UPCS), an innovative, nationally-recognized school for grades 7-12 in Worcester's Main South neighborhood. Since it opened in 1997, more than 95 percent of the school's graduates have gone on to attend college. The school has a dropout rate of zero.

Wingood has long challenged some of the prevailing approaches to the college admissions process. During his time at Clark, the University became an institutional sponsor of the Education Conservancy, which is dedicated to making the college admissions process an extension of the educational process. The Education Conservancy is highly critical of the public emphasis on college rankings such as those published in U.S. News & World Report.

The college search should focus on the student, Wingood says. "It seems obvious, but is all too rare in what often becomes a frenzy to get into the highest ranked colleges and universities with the most name recognition" he adds.

Wingood looks forward to the opportunity to be more directly involved in making a difference in the lives of students for whom college is not a forgone conclusion.

"I love what I have been able to do at Clark and I wanted to find a way to make attending a place like ours possible for students and families who may not have considered pursuing academic excellence and higher education a realistic option" he said.

"There are many colleges and universities that provide opportunities for intellectual and personal growth, but Clark remains distinctive in its power to change the lives of its students. My own experience with the students coming to Clark has confirmed my sense that Clark does change lives. There's something special that goes on here and it's marvelous to watch" he said.

Before you head off on vacation, remember to pick up a book from Goddard Library's leisure reading collection. These 200 books, purchased by the Friends of the Goddard Library, have been specifically selected to help you put your academic concerns aside. More than 90 percent of the collection is made up of many kinds of recently written fiction; the rest are books that one does not normally associate with an academic library: self-help books, a cookbook, and a book about the theft of paintings from Boston's Gardner Museum. The leisure reading collection is next to the periodical shelves on the main floor of the library. Remember that new books are coming in every month, so stop in all year to see what we have added.

Rory Horner, a doctoral student at Clark's Graduate School of Geography, is this year's winner of the Association of American Geographers (AAG) Economic Geography Specialty Group Best Student Paper Competition.

Horner presented his winning paper on the emerging geography of India's pharmaceutical firms in the global economy at the annual AAG conference in Las Vegas March 22-27. Several Clark graduates, undergraduates and faculty joined some 7,000 geographers, GIS specialists and environmental scientists from around the world who attended the conference to discuss the latest in research, policy and applications in geography, sustainability and GIScience.

Horner's dissertation focuses on the Indian Big Pharma multinational enterprises. "The industry has been undergoing substantial restructuring in recent years, and I hope to understand the organizational and geographical dynamics involved," he said.

Last year, Horner received the John Henry Thompson '41 Endowed Summer Research Fellowship in Geography, which he said helped support him while he conducted the pre-dissertation work that formed the basis of his paper.

The Ethnic Geography Special Group judged papers based on written clarity, methodological soundness, contribution to scholarship in ethnic geography and overall effectiveness. Horner was awarded a $250 prize, a certificate, a ticket to the AAG awards banquet and formal recognition at the banquet and in the AAG Newsletter.

During the 2009-2010 academic year, Clark undergraduate students will annotate the genome of an unusual microbe, and their efforts will be included in the Genomic Encyclopedia of Bacteria and Archaea.

Professor Heather Wiatrowski was selected by the Education Department of the U.S. Department of Energy's Joint Genome Institute (JGI) to take part on behalf of Clark in the Undergraduate Research Program in Microbial Genome Annotation. The program enables undergraduate life sciences students at Clark to analyze bacteria genomes as a new way of teaching bioscience curriculum standards.

"Students involved in this program will learn to use the same bioinformatics tools that are being used by professional annotators at the Department of Energy's Joint Genome Institute," said Susan Foster, chair of the Clark Biology department. "The professional annotators will then use the students' work. Not only will the students be trained in state-of-the-art methods, but they will be able to contribute to a national research project."

Mohan Kumar Sunuwar, a master's degree recipient this spring in the International Development and Social Change program, is celebrating the recent success of his locally funded grant proposal. The Greater Worcester Community Foundation announced that the Great Brook Valley Health Center (GBVHC) was funded for the full amount requested by Sunuwar for $20,585 to hire a tri-lingual service coordinator in its Immigrant and Refugee Services program. With the funding, GBVHC will provide support to immigrant and refugee patients who experience linguistic, cultural and systemic barriers to comprehensive health care. The money will be used to provide health systems education and help immigrant and refugee patients navigate the U.S. health care system.

Sunuwar wrote this grant proposal as part of his final project in the Grant Writing for Community Developers course with IDCE adjunct faculty member Dorothy (Dodi) Swope last fall. For the class, students were required to write a real grant for a local organization. Sunuwar was aware of GBVHC and inquired about its proposal needs. He then selected the Immigrant and Refugee Services program because it related to his interest in social exclusion and marginalized development.

For Sunuwar, originally from Nepal, the funding proposal touches on his passion for addressing the needs for those most vulnerable populations.

Sunuwar explains: "Recently, many refugees including Bhutanese are coming to Worcester as immigrants. I found that these refugees are facing difficulties seeking health care in hospitals and health centers in Worcester because of language barriers and lack of knowledge about the U.S. health system. Because of these barriers, they are vulnerable to increased health risks. ... "This situation really motivated me to write this grant proposal."

For more information about GBVHC, go to: http://www.gbvhc.org/ .

Is Freud still relevant a century after laying out the course of psychoanalysis?

This fall, in celebration of the centennial of the five landmark lectures Sigmund Freud presented at Clark in 1909, some of the world's leading scientists will gather here to explore the workings of the mind and new developments in the study of brain and genetics, the psychological approach, and how thought, motivation and emotion play a role in behavior.

The academic conference, from Oct. 3 to 5, is the centerpiece of Clark's centennial commemoration, "Great Minds Come to Clark -- Freud Revisited." Arts events, cultural collaborations with the city of Worcester, and campus community and student-organized activities are also being planned for the 2009-2010 academic year.

Some rules were made to be broken

We were all taught in school to never end a sentence in a preposition. While many grammar purists still insist on this rule, most agree that it's just not feasible. As the English language evolves, so do the rules of grammar. A quote often attributed to Winston Churchill states: "This is the sort of English up with which I will not put." There are times when it's necessary to end a sentence in a preposition. You should do your best to eliminate unnecessary prepositions, however, whether they fall at the end of the sentence or within it.

Examples:

Incorrect: Where did you get your new car at?
Correct: Where did you get your new car?

Incorrect: Put your book up on the shelf when you finish reading it.
Correct: Put your book on the shelf when you finish reading it.

Incorrect: Where did Jeff go to?
Correct: Where did Jeff go?

Incorrect: We will finish the project later on.
Correct: We will finish the project later.

Comma usage

Using the word "so"

Use a comma before the word "so" if you are using it to mean "therefore."

Example: "We were early for the meeting, so we went for coffee.

Do not use a comma after the word "so" if you are using it to mean "so that."

Example: We arrived early so we would have time to get some coffee.

Using the word "please:"

When you begin a sentence with the word "please," it is not set off by a comma.

Example: Please let me know if you need any help.

When you end a sentence with the word "please," however, it is set off by a comma.

Example: Let me know if you need any help, please.

When you end a sentence with the word "please," it is technically part of the phrase if you please. The words "if you" are understood and usually left out.

...

Junior Adam LeFebvre is the winner of Clark's first Clark Voices Student Video Contest. Clark students voted for their favorite entries on the Clark Voices multimedia site, declaring LeFebvre's spoof "Call Yourself a Clarkie" the winner. Contest entries had to be one minute or less and about the topic "You know you're a Clarkie when" As the winner, LeFebvre received a Flip video camera, one of the newest pocket-sized point-and-shoot video cameras on the market.

LeFebvre, who is double majoring in communications (with a focus in media studies) and theater, and minoring in French, says he has been interested in film "ever since I signed on with an independent film company in Hawaii called Noir Pictures in 2006." At Clark, he has continued his film interest by joining Clark Cable Network (CCN), where he has been station manager and will be program manager in the 2009-10 academic year.

"This semester, I was focusing entirely on getting CCN up and running, so I didn't have time to produce a single film. I decided that this film contest would be the perfect opportunity to re-kindle my interest," said LeFebvre. "Also, I vowed to myself that if I won the flip camera, I would start making films more regularly. Now that it has happened, I intend to follow through on that promise! I am ecstatic that I won. I can't believe that it happened!"

LeFebvre's video is the featured Video of the Week on Clark Voices. Watch it and other student videos on Clark Voices (www.clarku.edu/clarkvoices). Students may submit videos to Clark Voices for review and possible posting at any time.
