Billy Liar

A rare opportunity to see Tom Courtenay in ‘Billy Liar’ on the big screen was afforded us today courtesy of the 19th Bradford Film Festival.

The 1963 classic filmed largely in Bradford is about to be released on DVD and we had a preview of the remastered version this morning.

The film at some points is hilarious and comedically ahead of its time - and it was a joy to hear an audience laughing out loud. However, the theme of a new sixties generation looking to emerge from the shadows of the war and their elders is poignantly portrayed against a background of 1962 Bradford with many sequences filmed deliberately by director Schlesinger against the backdrop of demolition and reconstruction.

Brilliant performance from Courtenay - recipient of lifetime achievement award at the Festival - as the young man dreaming to escape to London from a symbolic job in an undertaker’s who at the last has just not quite the reckless adventure to join the free-spirited Julie Christie.

Prompted a quick visit today to the Fisher house in Baildon and to Bradford centre’s Southgate where Billy works, both pictured below.

Haworth Riding for the Disabled

We are absolutely thrilled with the programme you made with us the other week, so much so that I’m wondering if it would be in order for us to use the programme in our publicity materials? There are three areas we are looking at in particular. One is as evaluation evidence to submit to our funders (Big Lottery and others) where the materials will only be available to staff working in those organisations. Another would be to make available in CD form to other groups we might work with promoting our service. The third would be an item and download of the programme on our website.
