<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The start of this year involved so many interviews that it will take me forever catching up to post them all. This is actually one of my favorites. For one, it's a highly intelligent discussion between two straight A students, one in college the other in High School and they discuss the difficulties and possibilities of making it to higher education in a city like Oakland, CA. Oakland, CA is one of the most violent cities in America today. It has long had that reputation although now it is getting better it is still on the top ten list. Education is difficult for young students who want to succeed in this city. The schools have practically no budget for anything that the students need and some of the teachers become so discouraged they don't give any impression of caring towards the students.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Akintunde Ahmad made big news a few years ago by getting a 5.0 GPA. He received many scholarships and chose to go to Harvard. The person interviewing him is actually my daughter, Naudika Williams. The reason we asked her to do the interview is because she has stayed receiving a 4.0 GPA (she says she could not get a 5.0 at Oakland High, the school she goes to because they don't have the same extra curricular programs that Oakland Tech has which Akintunde benefited from). Throughout Naudika's high school years she has been apart of many programs including Californian's for Justice, a program that challenges school boards to include student voice when deciding how they use their budgets.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Together, it worked really well. All of the questions Naudika asked was her own.
Yes I know, super old. It's March and here I am posting about a Christmas event. But I'm really proud of this video. Instead of making a sad gloomy "artistic" piece trying to focus on helping poor folks out, I wanted it to show the true energy of this event. No one is boo-hooing feeling sad for themselves. They are simply living. Thankful for every day they breathe and happy to receive any blessings they get. Kids running around playing in jumpers is mostly what you hear over the sound of busy Oakland street traffic. Reporters came out, along with local celebrities. I know I should be kicking myself for not staying long enough to get MC Hammer. But honestly, what is this event about? Giving toys to kids who may not get any at all for Christmas otherwise. Purpose was served. Our job is done here.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">1) Bilal Mahasin is a pro boxer (GBO Champion) who has been through a lot and uses what he's gone through to motivate others. His interview touched on a lot of things that really helped cement a good part of what Dopeeramagazine is really about. Yes we have fun, we love music, we let people smoke weed and snort coke on camera, we are totally uncensored. But it's about keeping things real and showing real life, and a major part of that which we wanted to show was motivating people who are trying to change their communities for the better. So a little preach with that entertainment is necessary. Just enough to not scare people away. Actually, I'd say we give you the game more than preach.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">2) I got to go in the ring and have a pro boxer swinging at me! I love this kind of in the action filming. Bilal has great energy, focused and filled with strength and purpose. With every swing I could feel the gusts of air pushing against me. And if you look closely at one part of the video as he his throwing jabs then ending with a full swing, the light actually bended around him. There is not other explanation to me for that other than I actually captured the energy around his punches. Call me crazy, I don't care. Bend does not bend and reflect off of nothing. And there was no windows, beaming light or anything to make that reflection around us.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Enough said. Here's the video. Oakland's own, Bilal Mahasin.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Idaho J-Doe. This one here is a real character. Did he really snort cocaine on our first "interview" video? I'll leave that up to you to figure out. I wouldn't even say this is really an interview as much as it's him explaining a few things from his world. That's how it always is. I just following him with the camera and he takes me on a journey.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">You may of first seen him on Mistah fab's instagram<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">, and his popularity grew from there. People are really in shock that he's snorting cocaine in public. Other's who do it themselves are fans because they can relate. And with his music, he has a hardcore fan base for sure.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">With that said, <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">J-Doe is a real solid dude for sure. <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Yes, he does have a seriously bad habit that he fights everyday. He mentioned to us before the idea of us documenting his journey of trying to get sober. But it seems like that is pretty much what he does daily already on his Instagram<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> already.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I hope he does find a way to kick the habit and focus on entertainment like he really wants to do. Just keep in mind, when you see us featuring him it's not out of exploiting his addiction. We all have his back on kicking this monkey like a football at the Super Bowl.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Besides that overshadowing monkey on his shoulder, he raps though folks! He's really good too. I personally think he could be a comedic rapper, or something relating to comedy he's pretty funny and very smart. I<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">n the meantime, you can also check out his music and support his journey as he is FOR REAL!!!

A total Sneaker head heaven. Pretty much what they do is find rare and sought after sneakers and re-sell. They may of bought a very well kept pair of Jordan's from a sneaker head hard up for cash and cleaned them up, while some shoes are brand new. The shop stays busy as long as it's open. And their Instagram account stays flowing with new buys coming in that keeps sneaker heads wanting more.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">From a behind the scenes stance though, these are a really cool down to earth group of guys that work this shop. They know when we come in, it's always a warm welcome. We pretty much get all of our shows here (yes even for women's shoes because men's shoes are better!).
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Unfortunately I kind of wish I could have re-done some of the B roll scenes since at the time I didn't have a rig and good lens to give more depth in clarity with the shoe shots. But again, at I was just starting out and building out my equipment. More to always come, and always time to improve and get better.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Hi all, welcome to a new chapter that has been developing in my life. DopeEraMagazine. An extended take on Mistah Fab's Dope Era clothing line turned media entertainment. I have not updated my blog on any of this because when it started I just kept rolling, never looking back. I wanted to give it a good 4 - 6 months to see how well it would be received.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">We started in October 2015. Almost 6 months later, it is so well received we barely have time for anything anymore. Here's the first interview we did, no microphone, basically just my Canon 70D and a tripod sitting out on the sidewalk in front of Fabby's shop on 45th and Market, North Oakland or as they call it Ice City. You'll hear a lot of background noise which is just the usual lively activity of the neighborhood moving along as if we are not doing an interview at all. At one point I had to stop recording to ask everyone to stop having conversations around us. As well as dealing with a really up tight older white man who expressed his inconvenience of having to touch his poor shoe outside of the sidewalk and go over a little gutter water instead of walking right in front of the camera. It's an interesting mix with this gentrified neighborhood that has a strong close knit older community holding on tight to it's original culture while trying to be better role models for the younger generation coming up.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The community swarms around Mistah Fab as if he is a king bee (let's just say if that was a thing). The community respect is strong with this one and his presence is probably a strong reason why the original community still exists.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">It's amazing how fast such beautiful flowers can take over a section of neighborhood. When I first moved to my house I don't remember there even being morning glories. Now, 3 years later they have creeped from the neighbors yard, onto the side of their house, all across our fence and have started to cover a huge tree in our back yard.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This year was the first time I looked at our back yard and though it was amazingly beautiful. they say morning glories are like weeds taking over all plant species, but being in Oakland with a yard full of dry California yellow grass with a dying off overgrown tree that needs care, this take over is quite welcoming.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The sun peeks from behind the tree, and the morning glories and vines sparkle.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">(The very tall tree in my backyard that is starting to cover with morning glories, you can see them starting to reach to the top)

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This was the inspiration that brought Renne Hamilton and myself together on a body painting project. The both of us are artists, free spirits, in touch with energy and nature. So the concept wrapped around these morning glories in beautiful way. The idea that something so beautiful can come out of any ground and city space, growing, reaching up high to the sky. Giving beautiful color and life to an otherwise dry and boring space to see.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The model Renee invited, Kathering, was also filled with great energy.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Overall, I'm really happy with the results of this project. Renee and Katherine did a wonderful job, I could not of asked for more.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">In case you are curious, this project took about 4 hours total I believe. The body paint itself was about 2 hours, needing to take a break half way through.

This is our family kitten-cat Mochi. She is really hyper since she is only 1 year old and prefers to be outside. Every now and then you need to enter her territory, the back yard, and when you do she insists on playing. Since we have a tree covered in vines I used a vine to whip around her so she can chase it and she turned it into a game of tug-of-war. Too cute!
I'm not going to be able to give you a great editorial experience about this event. I was not able to write down the properly written names of every one who spoke and every person who they spoke about. But what I did do was try and capture the true nature of this event. Most of the time media is only going to give you a glimpse into the world of today's activism that includes the likes of Black Lives Matters and Stop Mass Incarceration who put this event together with Janelle Monae and Wondaland as a headliner that was meant to bring an audience. I honestly think those who missed out on attending this event really missed out. It was emotional, powerful, beautiful to the core and brought to light to a movement that I often only hear about from a very small lens surrounded with lots of speculation and rumors.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The main topics of the event were:
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">1) Police Violence towards people of color
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">2) Violence towards Transgender community
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">3) Gentrification (I actually learned about this event from Causa Just a Just Cause on Facebook)
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">4) Changing the current "school to prison" system
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">These are the true revolutionaries with a cause who are standing up and putting it all on the line to make change. Hopefully people will notice.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Below is a pictures and a video that is pretty long but it shows most of the rally and trust me it is not boring. If you ever wondered what a rally was like and what these movements are really about this is a great way to find out. Trust me, as much as some white people can easily feel attacked, there were speakers (some who I had not had a chance to record) who welcomed white people to get involved by learning about these communities and how gentrification and police violence effects them and why they are not backing down on continuing their mission
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Their mission is to make their communities safe without having to leave to another city with no jobs, food deserts and low opportunity while affluent white people take over the neighborhoods they have grown up in and improve on them in ways they had always wanted like better schools and availability to food and clean parks for their children.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Everyone, and I mean everyone no matter what their background and skin color, deserves a community that has doors of opportunity and safety. That is why as a white woman I want to help these movements the best way I can by providing media every chance I get right here in the Bay Area, CA.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I hope you take a deep look, watch the entire video (yes Janelle Monae and Wondaland are in it at the end, but you'd really be missing out if you don't see some of San Francisco's greatest activist of our time speaking as well).
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This is my first time hearing about this event despite it being around since 2008. That's pretty unfortunate. It seemed as if the only people who came to the rally were children and the parents of those children who were awaiting to receive a back pack.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The event had school registration booths available in the morning and lots of bouncy houses that would last throughout the day.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">A lengthy program continued from 9am - 3pm were the parents and children were requesting to participating in several events like the rally. The best part of being there was the kids.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I wish I had got some more video footage, some of the speakers were really good. One of everyone's hometown favorites was Akintunde Ahmad, a Oakland Tech graduate who now studies at Yale. Akintunde had received an incredible 5.0 and astounding 2100 on his SAT and he had been accepted with scholarships to many of the countries top colleges.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Other video included an Oakland Natives award to Mistah F.A.B. who also had a speech which followed off with him hosting one of the most adorable dance offs for the kids ever.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">(Mistah Fab on the phone as he was most of the day making runs busting moves trying to keep things going and umm, sorry I don't know these guys but they were mad cool.)
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I wouldn't say it's everyday that I get an invite to meet and take pictures of a major celebrity. It has happened and when it does it's always an interesting adventure.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Last Saturday, March 14, 2015 I received word that Marshawn Lynch was coming to North Oakland, CA to do an interview with E-40 and Mistah Fab for XXL Magazine. I've been told many things about Marshawn Lynch. Despite the fact that I care 0% about football his story is interesting. He comes from Oakland, refuses to do interviews and take pictures as much as possible and is criticized for not bending to the will of an industry that seems to treat athletes of celebrity status like they should be their puppets to toy with. Some fans are upset as well, because I guess they feel these players owe them something. I can understand that, when you are a fan of someone you always want more. You want to get to know them even though they will never know you. You want to understand who they are, and why it is they trigger that effect of needing more of them in your life.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">So a celebrity like Marshawn is expected to be used by the public, for the publics entertainment on the publics demands. Maybe if we didn't click on every sensationalized article about celebrities the media would focus on other things than their personal life. Maybe if we didn't hold such high standards to a celebrity that they they could not be forgiven when making life mistakes there would not be so much pressure. It's not as if everyone last one of us has not made mistakes and wished to be forgiven. I can totally imagine why Marshawn does not want to be everyone's little bitch. He controls his image rightfully.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">So when I first saw Marshawn ride up in his Lamborghini, covered head to toe completely except for his eyes and nose it didn't really surprise me. When all photographers were asked not to photograph the interview itself that made sense too. Why would XXL and possibly Marshawn want a million pictures of an interview all over the net before it could even be published. I was able to be the only one who snached pictures of him walking from his car, and also leaving in his car. It was one of my finest paparazzi moments. Not that I aspire to be one because I seriously don't! LOL.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">(Marshawn arrived in his Beast Mode line, his Aunt walking with him ready to help keep things in line)

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">What I did learn from this day was more about the community that Marshawn and Mistah Fab came from. The sense of anger and frustration from a community who looks up to Marshawn only to see the rest of America criticizes him at every opportunity. As I stood on the block around the corner from the interview in progress a woman walked up looking around like she was lost. No one would talk to her, they purposely acted as if she was not worth their time. So I approached her and asked if she was looking for anyone. She said "I'm looking for Marshawn. <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I went to high school with him and I just wanted to say hi and tell him how proud we are of him<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">". I told her that he was around the corner doing an interview, that I was there waiting because they didn't want of ton of people over there taking pictures so that's probably why she couldn't find him. She said "Oh well that figures. The way the media treats him." She suddenly looked so emotional, I could almost see tears in her eyes. Her tone went from soft and sweet to almost completely heartbroken and frustrated. "The way the media treats him, I understand why he's like this. <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">You know they don't understand us, they don't understand where we come from.<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Where is the media when he comes here and does events for the community? When he's signing autographs for the kids and raising money for them? They don't care about what he does for our kids".
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">For those who think Marshawn owes them some sort of entertainment through media, you may want to take a note of this. I can not officially confirm anything of what I've heard, but I was told he gives media outlets his full schedule including his charity events. Media outlets never come to charity events, they never show the side of him that wants to bring his community up. This community, the tone in this woman's voice spoke, it said all to me. The frustration of always being forgotten and over looked, treated as an after thought while the children raised are given little to no opportunities to succeed in life. The focus of who Marshawn Lynch is truly is was never cared for in the media or public eye. The idea of growing up in the hood and wanting to make it rich, not just to take care of yourself and your family but to pull up your community as well is something that only few actually follow through on. So what does he owe the fans other than winning superbowls and playing a good game?
Injustice, inequality, this is not news. But lately the nation seemed to of woken up from a long slumber and now cases like these matter. Not only that, but the topics of race inequality in America have once again been put front and center. Hopefully this time we can finally heal and become united.

I have never participated in a protest, and I'm at an age now where I probably won't participate in many more. But I did want to help some how. Considering that I'm a photographer who lives in Oakland, I thought the best way to help is to take pictures of the positive parts of this larger than life movement.

What really had me wanting to go was to see how these protests actually looked in person rather than by what our media shows. Looking at media the only parts of a protest I tend to see are the non-peaceful parts. When I was there I did not see any media outlets there. Everyone knew about the nation wide protest. The march from Berkeley to Oakland was publicly shared on social media. So why do I see absolutely no local media at this day time protest? It almost seems as if only the bad elements are the ones the media wants to show.

There was not many police out. No lines of officers in anyone's face. Just a few officers standing to the side observing, and of course officers stationed on the streets to block of traffic so the protesters could march and rally. This protest as you'll see in the pictures was clearly to focus on the kids, the youth.

I don't attend night time protests, I don't see the point in protesting at night time. This seems to be asking for trouble, marching around at a time when looters would most likely want to destroy property in the protection of dark lit streets. Most people are in their homes already while protesters march down business areas that have fewer people to witness their chants. So for me, this was an ideal way to protest. It was a bit disorganized, since you can tell there are many differently led protests going on at once. Lots of different groups, not one main leader.

I'd like to thank both my twin 15 year old daughters. A few higher view shots and some video footage was only possible thanks to them helping.
I didn't try to take pictures of tons of people. For one thing, I've gone to Fanime and found that because I don't know many cosplayer's some of them look at me disguised if I ask to take pictures. Kind of weird, but I know most are not like this they come out to show off all the hard work they put into their costumes.

The other thing is, the lighting was terrible as most gathering are but it's worse doing mid day summer shoots. So I was looking for the just right area and I went pretty far out there in picking spots. At least my pictures shouldn't look like any other photographers (I sure hope!) and those who felt it was work taking good shots made the effort to go up the hill to this location.

The cosplayers were awesome, I appreciate their participation. I'll be back for more gatherings again soon.
