Following the hugely successful classic car meeting last month at the Yaang Come Village hotel, where more than 50 classic vehicles were in attendance (click here to see 20 photos of this amazing event!), Chiang Mai Classic Car have a charity run organised for Sunday week, 15th November 2009 to an orphanage / children’s home at Mae Taeng & all are invited!

We have limited specific details so far, but I wanted to share these with you, so that you can lock the date away in advance and any additional relevant information will be relayed onto you as & when received:

DATE: Sunday 15th November 2009

MEETING POINT: Tesco Lotus Kam Thieng (Super Highway) Car Park

MEETING TIME: From 9:00am

ANTICIPATED DEPARTURE TIME: Around 09:30

The run will go to Mae Taeng, land of the elephant camps & the ultimate destination is an orphanage / children’s home there. A coffee stop will be made enroute at the ‘plantation’ home of a Camaro owning couple and lunch will be taken at the orphanage. I am told that the orphanage / children’s home caters to disabled children of 13 years of age & upwards. The return to Chiang Mai will be at your own convenience, or take the opportunity to visit one or two of the attractions in the Mae Taeng area first.

I am advised that any & all donations of food, books, clothing or anything else suitable for 13+ year old children would be gratefully received.

So, lock the 15th November 2009 into your diaries and come & join us at around 9am at Tesco Kam Thieng for the Mae Taeng Orphanage Magical Mystery Tour. Don’t forget to fill up your tank with petrol in advance though!

Note that this Chiang Mai Classic Ca charity run to Mae Taeng is in addition to our normal monthly Sunday Social, which will be held at Ninety-Four Coffee, Nim City Daily near Central Airport Plaza, as normal on Sunday 29th November. More details of this will be sent to you soon.

Yours in classic motoring,

The last CCL Sunday Social on the 30th August was a sparkling show. No fewer than 20 classic cars (and their owners of course!) attended, including 4 VW Microbuses, 2 early Beetles, a 1600 VW notchback, a VW Variant Estate, a ‘new’ old tiny Daihatsu pick-up, a Mini, an Alfa Romeo Giulia, a Daimler, a Porsche 928, Custom Coupes, assorted BMW’s, a Land Rover, a lovely black & white Mercedes - and the list goes on. Just have a look at a sampling of the cars below!

Mike Griffiths immortalised this day by taking a quality video & the edited & finished video will be available for viewing at our next event on the 27th September 09 & I understand that souvenir copies will also be available on the 27th, at nominal cost.

I was away overseas on business last month, so missed this memorable event, so I’m really looking forwards to seeing the video for myself & seeing what I missed out on!

But I won’t be missing out on our next event, which happens very soon on Sunday 27th September & I hope you won’t be missing out either. Please view the full size version of the image above for full details.

Not only are we having our usual monthly Classic Cars of Lanna Sunday Social, but for this month, member David Hardcastle has been kind enough to donate his time (and no doubt his wife Khun Noy’s time too J) to organise a Mini-Run for us all, out to Huay Tung Tao Lake, which will be followed by an optional lunch-stop at a nearby restaurant. A big thanks go to David & Noy for organising this for us all.

For the benefit of any latecomers or just for your navigational interest, David describes the route we will be taking as follows:

We’ll assemble at Ninety-Four Coffee at Nim City Daily (adjacent to Central Airport Plaza) at 10.00am, as usual. At 10.30am sharp we will leave in convoy, U-turning under the fly-over, passing Nyom Panich Toyota on our left and heading towards the moat.

At the moat we will take the first U-turn so we can drive steadily around the inside of the moat, along the whole of the south, east and north sides. It won’t be easy to keep together, but if we are patient, go more slowly than the average traffic and keep left, we should achieve a cohesive presence!

At the end of the northern side we’ll turn left and south for 200m before taking the first U-turn so we pass Ram Hospital on our left. Then we turn left onto Huay Kaew Rd and go all the way along, past the Amari Rincome Hotel, to the cross roads with Irrigation Canal Road. Here we turn right and follow this dual-carriageway road almost to its northern end before turning left sign-posted Huay Tung Tao Lake.

At the top of the single carriageway hill, please have 20b per adult ready in each car to purchase the required tickets at the booth. Twenty meters later, stop at the 2nd booth for the man to tear the tickets in half. No-one has ever been able to explain this system, other than its provision of jobs for wives of soldiers (the Lake is on Army land and closes at dusk, as does the Army).

At the T junction just before the lake we will turn right and gently circumnavigate the lake in a clockwise direction, which achieves the best views. Beware of racing motorcycles and drivers coming the other way, admiring the views.

After almost one complete lap we will park informally, and lunch can be taken at one of the many lakeside sala restaurants. Paddling and swimming are optional at no extra cost.

I think you’ll all agree that this sounds like a great fun family day out, so lock away Sunday 27th September and we’ll all look forwards to catching up soon.

Don’t forget – Meet at 10am, with a planned departure time of 10:30, from Ninety-Four Coffee at Nim City Daily. SEE YOU ALL THERE!

Yours in classic motoring,

Ian Garritt

And what a Sunday Social it was last month! I for one am sorry I was overseas and missed it!

For those like me who were unable to make it last month, I’ve included a couple of pictures from the last Sunday Social, in this month’s flyer – attached.

Member David Hardcastle reports:

“Classic Cars of Lanna had one of their best attended monthly gatherings of the year on Sunday from 10.00am, July 26th, at Nim City Daily near the airport.

New arrivals ranged as widely as a Mitsubishi Jeep (driven here to its new home from Pattaya), an lovely award winning Armstrong-Siddeley Sapphire and a very smart late 60’s BMW 2000. Member Russ Barnes had his black Fiat-based custom coupe, a Mini and Beetle driven respectively by Khun Kittiboon and his son and Robin’s Land Rover was back after a long absence. Cleve and Phen Reinhard were another 2 car family with their Citroen DS & Peugeot.

Many thanks to Khun Pravut, Vice President of Classic Car Association Thailand, for yet another visit from Bangkok to strengthen our Alliance, Khun Kay of NIM Operations Executive for arranging the reserved parking yet again, and most of all – the 20 members, with and without classics, for making it all possible.
Same venue, same time, August 30th!”

So as David says:
-	Same place – Ninety-Four Coffee at Nim City Daily / Rimping Airport Brach
-	Same time – From 10am
-	Just a different date – Sunday 30th August 09

And for our August Sunday Social, we hope to be joined by Khun Boonyarid Chullasapya, Past President of the Classic Car Association of Thailand (CCAT), who hopes to be visiting Chiang Mai at around this time and to join us.

So, until Sunday 30th August, keep having fun with your classic cars and we hope to see you all once again very soon.

Yours in classic motoring,

Ian

Last month’s Sunday Social saw us meeting at Kad Farang, with a gentle drive out to fellow member Ernest (Nest) Reypens beautiful home, Villa Obkhan, close to the Obkhan National Park. We had a good turnout & on behalf of all CCL participants, please can I extend our collective thanks & appreciation to Nest & his family, for their most generous hospitality.

A surprise attendee on the day was our friend Khun Pravut Kanchanawat, Vice President of the Classic Car Association of Thailand (CCAT) in Bangkok who, given Classic Cars of Lanna’s new alliance with CCAT, was keen to meet CCL members. A big ‘thank you’ must definitely go to Khun Pravut for travelling to Chiang Mai to join us.

Now onto what’s happening this month. Sunday 26th July 09 is the date set for this month, which will be a Classic Cars of Lanna Sunday Social. The venue is Ninety-Four Coffee, at Nim City Daily (known to many as RimPing Airport branch), just across from Central Airport Plaza. We’ll be there between 10am & 12 noon and of course prime ‘classic cars only’ parking directly in front of Ninety-Four Coffee is being kindly arranged by the management of Nim City Daily.

Aside from the extensive range of beverages & snacks available at Ninety-Four Coffee, there are of course many other food & beverage options available to you within the Nim City Daily complex.

This is a great opportunity to catch up with and chat to fellow like minded classic car enthusiasts and we look forward to seeing as many of you as possible on Sunday 26th from 10am.

Yours in classic motoring.

Why the change of venue you may ask? After all, most of our members like the convenience of meeting at Nim City Daily , close by the Airport. Rest assured, this is not a permanent change, but it does give us the added convenience of being close to our final destination, which is Villa Obkhan, the home and guest house of member Ernest Reypens.

Nest has invited us to visit and sample some real Belgian coffee. Those of us that made the trip to Nest’s place last October know just what a pleasant spot it is and what friendly and welcoming hosts Nest and his family are.

We thank him most kindly for volunteering to look after us on the last Sunday morning of the month and look forward to seeing you at Kad Farang from where our intrepid chairman, Ian Garritt, will lead our expedition into the heart of the Hang Dong countryside to the delightful Villa Obkhan.

Please mark this date in your diaries

Yours in Classic Motoring

Last month’s CCL get-together on the 25th April, for the official opening party of Miguel’s Cafe & Bar’s new Mexican restaurant at Chiang Mai 89 Plaza on the Old Lamphun Road, was extremely successful.

More than a dozen of our classic cars were prominently displayed out the front of the restaurant and I am confident the 30+ CCL members & friends who came along thoroughly enjoyed the ‘Viva Miguel’s’ party, as well as of course the entertainment, plenty of Mexican food & free-flowing Margaritas!

The latter in moderation of course!

Before I get onto this month’s Sunday Social, I’d like to share with you some wonderful news:

Classic Cars of Lanna is proud to announce a formal alliance with the Classic Car Association of Thailand (CCAT). Clearly this is testament to Classic Cars of Lanna’s standing in the growing Thai classic car movement & recognises the common goals of both CCAT & CCL in preserving Thailand’s motoring heritage & enjoying our classic cars. As this new alliance is further explored, we shall keep CCL members updated on any joint projects, events & benefits.

As a result of this, naturally CCAT’s local Chiang Mai members are more than welcome to come along and join us at any of our Sunday Social or Sunday Run events.

Now onto what’s happening this month.

Sunday 31st May is the date set for this month, which will be a Classic Cars of Lanna Sunday Social.

The venue is Ninety-Four Coffee, at Nim City Daily (known to many as RimPing Airport branch), just across from Central Airport Plaza.

Chiang Mai has an important, interesting & exciting event starting this coming Sunday 29th March – the ‘Chiang Mai International Cricket Sixes’, so we’ve decided that as the opening day of this event coincides with our usual last Sunday of the month meeting date, we’d combine the two!

Chiang Mai has an important, interesting & exciting event starting this coming Sunday 29th March – the ‘Chiang Mai International Cricket Sixes’, so we’ve decided that as the opening day of this event coincides with our usual last Sunday of the month meeting date, we’d combine the two!

Chiang Mai International Cricket Sixes is a truly international event, with 32 teams participating (including 3 ladies teams) from no less than 13 countries: Australia (8 teams); Bahrain (1 team); Bangladesh (1 team); China (1 team); England / UK (7 teams); Greece (1 team); Japan (1 team); New Zealand (2 teams); South Africa (1 team); Thailand (6 teams); United Arab Emirates (1 team); Vietnam (1 team) & last, but by no means least, Zimbabwe (1 team).

Play starts Sunday 29th March at the Chiengmai Gymkhana Club and the event runs daily, through to Saturday 4th April. Admission to this fun, exciting & fast moving spectator event is absolutely FREE and there’s a huge range for different food & drinks available from a variety of well known local restaurants (e.g. Dukes).

I appreciate that perhaps not everyone may understand cricket, but this is a major social event, so come for the fun & spectacle and no doubt there’ll be people there that are more than willing to help & explain how it all works! If you’d like to learn more about the Chiang Mai International Cricket Sixes, click here. If you’d like to learn more about cricket & how Sixes Cricket works, click here and you’ll find explanations of ‘Cricket for Beginners’ and ‘Cricket – as Explained to Foreign Visitors’!

Each days play starts at 9am & finishes at 6pm. It’s a fast moving, exciting game – each side has 5 overs to score in – no time is wasted (e.g. 3 overs bowled from one end, then 2 from the other so time is not wasted moving the fielders around etc etc).

So, we meet at 10am at Ninety-Four Coffee at Nim City Daily / Rimping Airport Branch & socialise for an hour, before departing at 11am, to drive in convoy to Chiengmai Gymkhana Club. And that’s it – simple as that & people can stay to watch the cricket (and eat & drink) for as little or as long as they choose.

We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible, for this fun & social day.

Yours in classic motoring,

Ian
