(1948) - B&W - 100 min

This is a classic movie - by perhaps the greatest filmmaker of all time, Akira Kurosawa. Dr. Sanada, played by Takashi Shimura (the leader in Seven Samurai), treats a petty criminal named Matsunaga (Toshiro Mifune) with tuberculosis, and tries to get him to work at treating his disease (stop drinking, smoking, get some rest, etc.) Meanwhile, another gangster gets out of prison and a feud breaks out between rival factions. A cool look at the underworld in Japan in post WWII, and the courage of a poor doctor, who is trying to cure another human, even if he is a criminal. We regret that the subtitles are difficult to read - but the story is pretty easy to follow.
A World Without Water The world is running out of its most precious resource. True Vision's timely film tells of the personal tragedies behind the mounting privatisation of water supplies. More than a billion people across the globe don’t have access to safe water. Every day 3900 children die as a result of insufficient or unclean water supplies. The situation can only get worse as water gets evermore scarce.
CRY OF THE SNOW LION brings audiences to the long-forbidden "rooftop of the world" with an unprecedented richness of imagery… from rarely-seen rituals in remote monasteries, to horse races with Khamba warriors; from brothels and slums in the holy city of Lhasa, to the magnificent Himalayan peaks still traveled by nomadic yak caravans. The dark secrets of Tibet’s recent past are powerfully chronicled through riveting personal stories and interviews, and a collection of undercover and archival images never before assembled in one film. A definitive exploration of a legendary subject, TIBET: CRY OF THE SNOW LION is an epic story of courage and compassion.

Harrill, The Fort Fisher Hermit, spent 17 years under the stars and scrub oaks of Fort Fisher, North Carolina. Surviving off the land and the contributions from thousands of visitors, the Fort Fisher Hermit became one of the areas largest tourist attractions. Wow - what a treat, Jack Nicholson in his second movie, circa 1960 (his debut was the Cry Baby Killer in 1958) as the alpha male in a gang of tough kids who are into racing cars. Johnny is their leader and hero who makes all the decisions for the group. For instance - Dave (Robert Bean) has a new girlfriend, and she is lame (like from the good side of the tracks) so Johnny tells Dave to lose the chick (Nancy, played by Georgiana Carter). Dave doesn't want to give up his girlfriend, so Johnny decides to move in. Of course all this ends in trouble with a capital T, as Johnny ends up killing a motorcycle cop and an extended stay at the jailhouse.

starring Jack Nicholson as Johnny Varron

The film is filled with all kinds of vintage street slang from way back in the day. The movie is the middle of the hot rod racing greaser era.... these kids aren't Beatniks... (who are into jazz and like to hang out listening to poetry at the 60s era Starbuck prototype coffee houses. For Beatniks - See Bucket of Blood or Beat Girl). Nope - these kids like to play chicken with oncoming cars and run motorcycle cops off the road for kicks. Jack Nicholson is the gang leader who is also a rookie race car driver, way before the days of NASCAR... like no rules whatsoever. Check out the great final scenes - with Jack Nicholson behind the wheel of the race car. Cool.

The film originally released as Kwai Tsan Ttseh was made in 1984 and stars Jackie Chan and Biao Yuen as street vendors who come to the rescue of a beautiful woman named Sylvia, played by Lola Fomer. As with most Jackie Chan movies, there's lots of great martial arts, comedy and bascially good clean fun.

Jackie Chan stars as Thomas

Samo Hung plays a bumbling private detective named Moby - who is put on a new case after his boss runs out trying to evade some thugs looking to collect a gambling debt. He must find a woman named Gloria (Susana Sentís), who happens to be Sylvia's mother. The film features an incredible fight scene in the climax between Jackie Chan and one of the Count's strongmen (Benny Urquidez). The film is in either Cantonese or Mandarin (not sure) with English subtitles and set in the streets of Spain. Over his wife's numerous objections, a man rises in the dead of night: he's a stalker, one of a handful who have the mental gifts (and who risk imprisonment) to lead people into the Zone to the Room, a place where one's secret hopes come true. That night, he takes two people into the Zone: a popular writer who is burned out, cynical, and questioning his genius; and a quiet scientist more concerned about his knapsack than the journey. In the deserted Zone, the approach to the Room must be indirect. As they draw near, the rules seem to change and the stalker faces a crisis.
