Spruke - Lies Synthpop Told Me [Review]

Spruke's new album is titled Lies Synthpop Told Me. It has a clear focus on a synthesizer feel versus the punk rock vibe of his previous album Katana & Tonic. The album has a huge range of sounds, insight and humor. Boulden seems to have focused on mixing his musical experiences listening to 80s/90s pop and his love of punk rock. However, he still reminds you that he enjoys the modern approach to music production, square waves, and a little dubstep. Boulden combines these inspirations with some emotional themes and humor to create a record that has a balanced and cohesive flow.

Lies Synthpop Told Me starts off with a catchy pop-track called, Morning Sex, and it is riddled with humor. This is a well-executed and well-produced pop song. It honestly doesn't fit into my musical taste but don’t seem to skip it due to the clever and well written lyrics . It’s hard to capture humor in music without the artist sounding like they are trying too hard to be funny but Boulden avoids this pitfall.

The album continues with a clear pop feel, but slowly starts to move into a more serious direction lyrically with a satirical look at tragedy and violence in the tracks Change of Pace and Shoot the Badguys. In the song Shoot the Badguys, I found myself tapping my foot, enjoying the production, and then realizing that it is a very tongue-in-cheek look at the binary perception of “Good Guys” vs. “Bad Guys”.

The track, Hey Man, Watch This Boulden uses choppy layered vocal arrangements, slower rhythms, and lower synth tones while presenting a catchy chorus to keep you engaged. This approach is effective to get the listener to pay attention to the subject matter of our culture in the US being so enthralled with putting themselves in harm’s way only to get a small taste of attention for peers or media.

I Gave In is the first track that felt like a ballad over a pop track… maybe something that would end a movie well. The song has some interesting changes of pace and are effective in preventing the song from becoming stale. This also is a nice juxtaposition to the sixth track, Colorbled, which is a 90s inspired rock track, ala early Nine Inch Nails. Despite being a big fan of this genre, Colorbled song failed to capture my interest musically or thematically the way others on the album had.

The climax of the album comes with the two track combination of Bad News pt I and Bad News pts II&III. This is easily my favorite part of the album and is placed perfectly if you’re like me and truly enjoy albums as an experience. This track features the return of Laura Grace who was the lead vocalist in Katana & Tonic. Grace’s voice is absolutely gorgeous in this track and Blouden was able to use it perfectly to convey the power of the song’s tone and theme. I came away interpreting the track as a song acknowledging the futility we commonly feel in our lives but to not give up.

Blouden immediately gives the listener a breather from the last few emotional tracks with a harmonica and an acoustic guitar on the track Smoke Signals. Although, this song is about the future being unknown, Blouden does not convey a sense of despair, instead he acknowledges that not knowing what the future holds is not the end of the world.

Interestingly enough, after Smoke Signals, the subject matter turns to Boulden addressing, what happens if we find a special someone and the future seems a little clearer? You can find yourself in a situation where you are trapped and have little to no control over your day to day life. The track Dollhouse depicts this situation perfectly and uses the crunchy side of synthesizers, some square waves, and vocal inspirations from 90s rock to match the narrative.

Boulden ends the album with two quite different tracks thematically. Sold takes a witty approach in addressing his concerns with commercialism. He’s points out what happens if people don’t stop and smell the roses… they’ll find themselves unhappy, in debt, in the rat race of trying to get “stuff”. The final track, All My Dreams are Nightmares, is a great track to end the journey of Lies Synthpop Told Me. It is a reflective track that reminded me of not being able to unwind from the stresses of life.

This is an album that starts off with a very pop-heavy feel and ends with a darker mutation of the sound which was created with the same synthesizer. At times, the album did not mesh with my personal taste in music, but despite this I found myself enjoying the album and appreciating its impressive production value. Boulden was able to address personal concerns in his life and was to speak to issues he sees in the world from a big-picture perspective. In an age where digital music focuses on selling single tracks at a time, it was enjoyable to listen to an album that thematically and musically was coherent from beginning to end. Boulden’s vocal and instrument production takes a leap forward from his previous releases so if you enjoyed any of his previous work I fully expect you'll feel the same about this release.

In the last two months we've played some new games like BioShock Infinite, Tomb Raider, Demon Soul, Dark Souls, 10,000,000, Star Craft 2 and more. Our retro talk discusses fun with Mega Man 1,2,6 and 7, Kirby's Adventure, Super C, Castlevania, and more. Oh Yeah... Scott Pilgrim's co-op DLC is broken, jerks! After repeatedly dying in the same place, I gave up and wrote the game off. Afterwards, I watched others playing Demon's Souls and realized what a rich, detailed game it is. These videos are going to chronicle my trials and tribulations while I try to beat this game.
