The best way to remember Elvis is through his superb music. The temptation is to highlight this via a career overview, but there are few better examples of Elvis’ brilliance than what he achieved in one evening/overnight session on 3rd/4th April, 1960. During that single session, Elvis recorded two of his most well-known and successful recordings, “Are You Lonesome Tonight?” and “It’s Now or Never”, as well as fan favourites such as “The Girl of My Best Friend”, “Fever”, “Such a Night”, “Like a Baby” and, perhaps best of all, “Reconsider Baby”. A number of the songs would feature on the great album “Elvis is Back”.

The re-release of 2000’s “Fifty Greatest Hits” will give Elvis another impressive chart placing in the UK this week, following number ones in 2015 and 2016. “Are You Lonesome Tonight?” and “It’s Now or Never” are among the classic recordings on that two-CD collection.

Another success story in the UK in 2015 was the “Elvis at the O2” exhibition in London, which proved so popular that its original nine-month run time was extended by five months. It will close on Sunday (January 10th) and is well worth a visit for those who can get there this weekend.

Graceland auction

Elvis’ birthday was celebrated in Memphis yesterday with a 126 item auction on the Graceland grounds. The most high profile lot was the 1969 Custom Gibson Ebony Dove guitar that Elvis played in many shows, including the Aloha From Hawaii worldwide television special in 1973. The guitar sold for $270,000 (£184,670).

Sony recently announced that the 60-disc set “Elvis Presley – The Album Collection” will be released in March. The set features the bulk of albums released during Elvis’ lifetime and concludes with three “rarities” discs featuring outtakes, home recordings and live cuts. The impressive looking collection will be released in March and is a reasonable alternative for those who didn’t purchased the Complete Masters set a few years ago.

Sadly the reunion came too late for former members Ian McLagan and Ronnie Lane, who died in 2014 and 1997, respectively. A previous reunion in 2009 featured Mick Hucknall on lead vocals.

Faces Box Set and new Rod Stewart album

A five-CD box set titled “The Faces – 1970-1975: You Can Make Me Dance, Sing Or Anything…” was released on August 28. The collection features the albums “The First Step (1970)”, “Long Player (1971)”, “A Nod Is as Good as a Wink…to a Blind Horse (1971)”, and Ooh La La (1973). Each album features unreleased bonus tracks. There is also a bonus disc containing nine non-album tracks, including the 1973 single “Pool Hall Richard” and a live performance of the Temptations’ “I Wish It Would Rain” from the 1973 Reading Festival. The set is also available on vinyl.

The album opens with a cover of the Willie Nelson country song “Opportunity To Cry” and continues with his take on The Milk Carton Kids’ pleasing folk track “Honey, Honey” (not the ABBA song, for those who were having trouble imagining it).

Next up is Jones’ take on Little Willie John’s “Take My Love (I Want To Give It)”, which should get the feet tapping if anything like the original.

“Bring It On Home” is the Willie Dixon-penned 12-bar blues that was first recorded by Sonny Boy Williamson in 1963, before being covered by Led Zeppelin in 1969. This is not the great, similarly titled Sam Cooke song.

“Everybody Loves A Train” is the Los Lobos number from their 1996 album “Colossal Head”. It should be well suited to Jones’ current style and, if incorporated, the spoken part might be interesting.

Gillian Welch’s 2001 track “Elvis Presley Blues” will receive a fairly dramatic and moody rendition if anything like the live versions that Jones has been performing recently.

“Why Don’t You Love Me Like You Used To Do?” was penned by Hank Williams and later covered by Jerry Lee Lewis, who is one of Jones’ favourite artists. Jones was perhaps drawn to the lyric “my hair’s still curly and my eyes are still blue”.

“He Was a Friend of Mine” is a traditional folk song that has been recorded by many artists, including Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson and the Byrds. This would suit the stripped down approach used by Jones on tracks such as “Did Trouble Me” and “The Tower of Song”.

Jones covers the Rolling Stones’ “Factory Girl” next; a song written in Irish folk style for their 1968 album “Beggars Banquet”.

It’s back to classic R&B next with a cover of Billy Boy Arnold’s catchy 1955 track “I Wish You Would”, which was covered nicely by The Yardbirds in 1964.

This 2014 live performance gives an idea what to expect from Jones’ cover of Eddie Floyd’s “‘Til My Back Ain’t Got No Bone”.

“Tomorrow Night” is a Hawaiian-flavoured track written in the 1930s that has been recorded by many artists, including Lonnie Johnson, Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis and B.B. King. It’s another song that Jones has been singing live in recent shows.

“Raise A Ruckus” is a lively country track that has been performed by the likes of Jesse Fuller and, more recently, Old Crow Medicine Show. Jones has been having fun with the song on stage.

Rhino released a deluxe edition of “Moondance” in 2013.

Van Morrison was awarded an honorary knighthood by Queen Elizabeth II in June for his “services to the music industry and to tourism in Northern Ireland.” A week later he received the prestigious Johnny Mercer Award at the Songwriters Hall of Fame Gala in New York City. He will celebrate his 70th birthday on August 31 with two concert performances as part of the closing event of the Belfast EastSide Arts Festival 2015.

For several months, Elvis fans have been hearing about a new album that will feature “Elvis like he has never been heard before”. This is the project that was being referred to. It is the latest attempt by Sony to create a high profile album that will garner media interest and sell to a wider audience than just the diehard fans. There have been mixed results from previous efforts, including the “Christmas Duets” album and the soundtrack to the Cirque du Soleil “Viva Elvis” show.

As far as UK sales go, Elvis’ biggest seller for many years was 2013’s “The Nation’s Favourite Elvis Songs”, which was tied in with a popular ITV television special. No doubt mindful of that, the “If I Can Dream” release will tie in with an ITV documentary titled “Elvis and Me” which sees actress Joanna Lumley interview Priscilla Presley at Abbey Road Studios (where the album was recorded) and then travel to Memphis to visit Graceland and meet with some of Elvis’ friends and associates.

Rod Stewart broke the news on his website, saying:

This year is the 40th anniversary since The Faces parted ways so it’s about time we got together for a jam! Being in The Faces back in the day was a whirlwind of madness but my God, it was beyond brilliant.

The Faces have reunited without Stewart in recent years, with Mick Hucknall taking on vocal duties. Hopes for a Stewart-led reunion increased when the trio performed together at a private party for Stewart’s 70th birthday earlier this year.

The Faces formed in 1969 as a five-piece band, including the late Ronnie Lane on bass and Ian McLagen on keyboards. Their hits included “Stay With Me” and “Cindy Incidentally”.

Ronnie Wood and Kenney Jones have welcomed the reunion:

Getting back on stage with the lads playing ‘Stay with Me’ and other favourites will be a blast and will make this a very special night. Being in The Faces was a mad and brilliant time for all of us and although we don’t have Ronnie and Mac with us anymore this is our chance to remember them and say Had Me a Real Good Time – Ronnie Wood

The years of The Faces were some of the best of my life and I’m so proud to have been a part of the band. I’m unbelievably excited to have the opportunity to get up on stage with Rod and Ronnie again. Ronnie Lane and Ian McLagan will be dearly missed but we’ll raise a glass to them – Kenney Jones

A Spanish police spokeswoman said:

I can confirm the death of British national Priscilla White, aged 72. We are still awaiting autopsy results but everything at this stage is pointing towards her death being the result of natural causes.

Born Priscilla Maria Veronica White on May 27 1943 in Liverpool, England, the singer changed her name when she was mistakenly referred to as Priscilla Black in an issue of the Mersey Beat magazine in 1963. Cilla was gigging at various venues in Liverpool in this period and also working as a cloakroom attendant at The Cavern. John Lennon introduced Cilla to the Beatles manager, Brian Epstein, in the summer of 1963 and she became his only female client after seeing her perform at the Blue Angel jazz club.

After just breaking into the UK Top 40 with her first single, “Love of the Loved”, Cilla achieved back-to-back UK number ones with “Anyone Who Had a Heart” and “You’re My World”. Other notable hits included “Don’t Answer Me”, “Alfie” and “Step Inside Love”.

Cilla began a hugely successful television career in the late 1960s, achieving success with the BBC variety show, “Cilla”, from 1968 to 1976 and then hosting the hugely popular hit shows, “Blind Date” and “Surprise Surprise”, in the 1980s.

In 2014, Cilla was presented with a “Special Award” by Bafta in recognition of her 50-year career.

Cilla was married to her manager Bobby Willis for more than 30 years until his death in 1999. She leaves behind three sons, Robert, Ben and Jack, and two grandchildren.
