As a lad, I’d lose myself in its worlds, the hum of the telly and the clack of the controller my soundtrack to countless afternoons. Sure, legends like The Legend of Zelda, Castlevania, and Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!! deserve their praise, but my heart belongs to eight NES gems that defined my late childhood entry to the NES: Top Gun, Super Mario Bros. 3, Kirby’s Adventure, Contra, M.U.L.E., Mega Man 2, Rad Racer, and Batman: The Video Game. These are my Top Gun of NES games - titles that flew high then and still hold up today. Let’s take a nostalgic flight through why they’re so special, what critics thought at the time, and how they play now.

1. Top Gun (1987)

Top Gun was my Maverick moment. I’d squint at the screen, imagining myself as a hotshot pilot dodging missiles and nailing that carrier landing. The game’s flight sim vibe, with its dogfights and nerve-wracking refuelling sequences, captured the ’80s blockbuster energy perfectly. Every crash stung, but every victory felt like strutting across the tarmac.

Critics, like Computer and Video Games in ’87, loved its smooth controls and intense pace but warned about its brutal difficulty - those landings were no joke. Today, Top Gun still delivers. The mechanics are tight, the challenge is real, and the minimalist aesthetic screams retro cool. It’s not flashy, but it’s got that Top Gun swagger.

2. Super Mario Bros. 3 (1990)

If the NES had a king, it’s Super Mario Bros. 3. This game was a universe unto itself - eight sprawling worlds, wild power-ups like the Tanooki Suit, and secrets that had me and my family trading tips like spies. I can still hear the boop of stomping a Goomba and feel the thrill of finding a warp whistle. It was pure magic.

Nintendo Power dubbed it “Mario’s masterpiece,” and Electronic Gaming Monthly praised its endless variety. Critics weren’t exaggerating; it’s platforming perfection. Play it now, and the controls are crisp, the levels genius. It’s no surprise it’s still a speedrunner’s dream - this game is timeless.

3. Kirby’s Adventure (1993)

Kirby’s Adventure introduced me to Dream Land’s pink hero, and I was smitten. Swallowing enemies to steal powers was mind-blowing, and the bright, bouncy worlds felt like a warm hug. I’d hum the soundtrack while floating through levels, hunting secrets like a kid on a treasure hunt. It was the perfect mix of easy-going fun and surprising depth.

GamePro called it a “gorgeous latecomer” to the NES, lauding its visuals and innovative mechanics. Some critics found it too forgiving, but that’s what made it so welcoming. Today, it’s as charming as ever, tight controls, vivid sprites, and a cosy vibe that’s pure nostalgia fuel.

4. Contra (1988)

Contra was my couch co-op obsession. My cousin and I would blast through jungles and alien bases on the Amstrad CPC version aka Gryor in the UK, shouting as we unleashed the spread gun (cheers, Konami Code). The run-and-gun chaos was relentless, and every boss battle felt like a badge of honour. Losing our last life hurt, but the high of winning was unmatched. The NES version was easily the best of the home ports.

Electronic Gaming Monthly hailed it as a “co-op classic,” though some reviewers groaned at its steep difficulty. Fire it up now, and it’s still a rush - fast, fluid, and unforgiving. The pixel art pops, the music pumps you up, and it’s still a test of reflexes and teamwork.

5. M.U.L.E. (1983, NES port 1990)

M.U.L.E. is the odd one out, a quirky economic sim about colonising a planet. I’d spend hours trading resources, outsmarting mates, and chuckling as our robotic mules shuffled across the screen. It was Settlers of Catan before board games took over my life, blending strategy and sabotage in a way that felt alive.

Critics were niche on this one - Nintendo Power praised its depth but noted its learning curve scared off casual players. Today, it’s a fascinating relic. The multiplayer still sparks friendly rivalries, and its retro charm is undeniable, even if it’s not as polished as modern strategy games.

6. Mega Man 2 (1989)

Mega Man 2 was my robot-blasting obsession. The Blue Bomber’s second outing had it all: cracking stages, memorable bosses like Metal Man, and a soundtrack that’s still stuck in my head. I’d replay levels just to perfect my run, feeling like a genius when I nailed the boss order. It was tough but fair, and oh-so-rewarding.

Critics adored it - Nintendo Power called it “a near-perfect sequel,” and GamePro raved about its tight controls. They weren’t kidding. Playing today, the platforming feels precise, and the music is iconic. It’s a masterclass in action-platformers that still holds up.

7. Rad Racer (1987)

Rad Racer was my speed demon fix and Outrun sticky plaster. Popping in that cartridge and slipping in and out of traffic made me feel like I was tearing down a coastal highway. The smooth controls and pulsing soundtrack had me hooked, even if I crashed into every other palm tree.

Computer and Video Games praised its arcade-style thrills and 3D effects, though some felt it leaned too heavily on OutRun’s shadow. Today, it’s still a blast - simple but addictive, with a retro vibe that screams ’80s cool. It’s not Mario Kart, but it’s a wild ride.

8. Batman: The Video Game (1989)

Batman: The Video Game made me feel like the Dark Knight. Tearing through Gotham’s gritty streets, wall-jumping past goons, and facing off against the Joker was pure comic-book bliss. The moody visuals and cracking soundtrack nailed the 1989 Tim Burton vibe, and I’d replay it just to feel like a superhero.

GamePro called it “a must-play for Batman fans,” and Nintendo Power loved its tight platforming. Some critics noted its difficulty spikes, but that only made victories sweeter. Today, it’s still a gem -responsive controls, atmospheric levels, and a gritty charm that holds strong.

Why They Still Soar

These games aren’t just relics; they’re proof the NES was built to last. Super Mario Bros. 3 and Mega Man 2 are platforming gold, their controls as sharp as ever. Contra and Batman deliver pulse-pounding action that rivals modern indies. Kirby’s Adventure and Top Gun offer accessible fun with surprising depth, while Rad Racer and M.U.L.E. bring niche thrills that still spark joy. Critics of the era saw their brilliance, and time hasn’t dimmed it.

Playing them now - whether on an old telly or a modern emulator takes me back to simpler days, when a good game and a bowl of cereal were all I needed. These eight are my Top Gun of NES games, soaring high above the rest. What are yours? Grab a controller, pop in a cartridge, and let’s relive the magic.

#retrogaming # nostalgia #1980s #videogames # nintendo #nintendones

Classic Replay - Sega Nomad

What is it?

Feeling nostalgic for the golden days of the Mega Drive? Before Nintendo's Game Boy ruled the scene, there was Sega's Nomad—the Mega Drive that (almost) fit in your pocket. Only released in America, the Nomad was a portable version of Sega's 16-bit masterpiece. It was about the size of a chunky paperback book and heavier than your average Harry Potter novel.

This pocket-sized powerhouse let you play Genesis (US Mega Drive) games on the go, with its six-button controller, a port for an external second controller, two AV outputs, a large built-in 3-inch colour screen, and the option to plug it into your TV at home. The only downside? It couldn't accommodate your beloved 32X and Sega peripherals. But hey, being able to play Toki on the toilet? Totally worth it!

Why you should want one

Genesis cartridges, including most UK and Japanese ones with an adapter, are still easily accessible and won't break the bank.

Games you really should get

From Ghouls 'n Ghosts, Rocket Knight Adventure, and Alien Soldier to the iconic Sonic and Thunder Force series, the unforgettable Gunstar Heroes, Toejam and Earl, EA's Strike series...or practically anything crafted by Sega, Treasure, or Capcom.

Where to get one

I always start with eBay - it's a great place to begin and you can usually score one for around £180 to £250, often bundled with a game or two. If that doesn't work out, check out car boot sales, retro gaming events, specialty shops, or Facebook pages dedicated to the Sega Nomad.

Come here, there's more...

Though the Nomad was exclusively released in the US, Japan had its own unique handheld Mega Drive: the Mega Jet. This device was designed for use on Japanese airline flights. Their first release, Rescue On Fractalus, used a pioneering technique to generate a believable 3D landscape - finding a 'Jaggi' enemy hammering on your cockpit window is still chilling and believable enough to make you jump over three decades later!

Look out for?

The C64 Maxi - a full-sized Commodore 64 with a working keyboard. You can even add your own .D64 files. It connects to any modern TV via HDMI for crisp 720p HD visuals at 60 Hz or 50 Hz. There are over forty pre-installed games, including California Games and Cybernoid 2.

Where can I get one?

Just about anywhere. Let's dive into why the Amstrad CPC was considered one of the best 8-bit computers, and how it compared to the Commodore 64 (C64), ZX Spectrum, and the MSX.

Amstrad CPC

The Amstrad CPC series, launched in 1984, was known for its robust design and built-in monitor, which set it apart from its competitors. It featured a Zilog Z80A CPU running at 4 MHz, 64 KB of RAM (expandable to 128 KB), and impressive graphics capabilities with a palette of 27 colours. The CPC's sound was handled by the AY-3-8912 sound chip, offering three channels of sound.

Commodore 64 (C64)

The C64, released in 1982, was a powerhouse in the 8-bit market. It had a MOS Technology 6510 CPU running at 1 MHz, 64 KB of RAM, and superior graphics with a resolution of 320x200 and 16 colours. The C64's SID (Sound Interface Device) chip was legendary, providing three channels of complex sound and music.

ZX Spectrum

The ZX Spectrum, launched in 1982, was known for its affordability and accessibility. It featured a Zilog Z80A CPU running at 3.5 MHz, with models offering 16 KB or 48 KB of RAM. The Spectrum's graphics were limited to 256x192 resolution with 8 colours, and its sound was basic, using a simple beeper.

MSX

The MSX standard, introduced in 1983, was an ambitious attempt to create a unified platform. MSX computers used a Zilog Z80A CPU running at 3.58 MHz, with 64 KB of RAM and a graphics resolution of 256x192 with 16 colours. The sound was handled by the AY-3-8910 chip, similar to the Amstrad CPC

Comparison

Graphics: The Amstrad CPC had a slight edge over the ZX Spectrum and MSX in terms of colour palette, but the C64's graphics capabilities were superior overall.

Sound: The C64's SID chip was unmatched, providing richer and more complex sound compared to the Amstrad CPC and MSX. The ZX Spectrum's sound was the most basic until later models.

Design: The Amstrad CPC's built-in monitor and robust design made it a convenient all-in-one package, whereas the C64 and ZX Spectrum required external displays.

Affordability: The ZX Spectrum was the most affordable, making it accessible to a wider audience. The Amstrad CPC and MSX were priced higher, but offered more features.

Software: The C64 had a vast library of games and software, followed by the ZX Spectrum. The Amstrad CPC and MSX had smaller but dedicated libraries.

Guild of Thieves (Amstrad Mode 0)

In conclusion, the Amstrad CPC was a well-rounded machine with strong graphics and sound capabilities, a convenient design, and a solid library of software. While the C64 excelled in graphics and sound, and the ZX Spectrum was the most affordable, the Amstrad CPC struck a balance that made it a favourite among many 8-bit enthusiasts. The MSX, as an outsider, offered a unique standard but couldn't quite match the popularity of its competitors.

#amstrad #zxspectrum #c64 #videogames #8bit #nostalgia

The ultimate 2 Player Games

You can't beat an epic two-player experience! My earliest memory of a two-player game is playing Gauntlet on the Amstrad CPC with my cousin. We would spend hours on it, and then came Deeper Dungeons with 500 more levels, many of which were fan-made and from the developers themselves. Another early memory is Target Renegade, a fantastic game that was even better with a friend. It actually improved over the arcade original and then some.

Then came Gryzor, and I was blown away. The home conversion I had was far from arcade perfect, but it allowed you to team up with a friend, which was a game-changer for the time in both depth of gameplay and cooperative action. But there were many more. At the time, the Intel DX2 and Pentium processors were just emerging, with the DX2 released in March 1992 and the Pentium in March 1993. Unfortunately, Amstrad's offering came a bit too late to make a significant impact. However, it was upgradable to 16MB of RAM and featured a 40MB hard drive, along with SVGA graphics boasting 256KB of RAM. There were plans to release a Cyrix 486 model, but it's unclear if it ever made it to market.

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiGl2MFK6iCgniQ-Hh32Wp4Xw4YsmIWdYyh5nDRaHvi3qyBWSNcdtber0quXbDI4m03FgId60dTQtNugfcZPSejTfYnbf6zGq1FQT3mDbcOYeUCq1jrwLeeOk4hKPtDWRsW1jnmFTHwGh6UhTld744SM3FpkMRfQcRyN34uKlK2J3j9vR1vyofgOYb5eS0/s1335/MegaPC486.jpg" text-align: center;">
The Amstrad Mega PC had potential, but several factors could have made it more successful:

Better Timing: Releasing the Mega PC earlier, before the dominance of more powerful 486 and Pentium CPUs, could have given it a competitive edge.

Improved Performance: Upgrading the CPU to a 486 or even a Pentium would have made it more appealing to consumers looking for better performance.

Competitive Pricing: Offering the Mega PC at a more affordable price point could have attracted more buyers.

Marketing and Awareness: Stronger marketing campaigns to highlight the unique combination of a PC and Sega Mega Drive could have increased interest and sales.

Expanded Features: Adding more RAM, larger storage options, and better graphics capabilities would have made it a more versatile and future-proof device.

Software Support: Ensuring a wide range of compatible software and games for both the PC and Mega Drive sides of the device would have enhanced its appeal.

In summary, while the Amstrad Mega PC was innovative with its integrated Sega Mega Drive, the 486 DX2 and Pentium CPUs were more powerful and versatile machines, better suited for demanding applications and games of the time.

The 16-bit era of video game consoles was a golden age for gaming, with fierce competition between the Sega Genesis (Mega Drive) and the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES). Both consoles had their unique strengths and iconic game libraries, making it difficult to declare a definitive "best" console. However, the SNES is often celebrated for its superior graphics, sound capabilities, and a vast library of beloved games like "Super Mario World," "The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past," and "Super Metroid." On the other hand, the Sega Genesis was known for its fast-paced action games, including the iconic "Sonic the Hedgehog" series, and its aggressive marketing campaign.

One of the most memorable aspects of the Sega Genesis marketing was the term "Blast Processing." Sega claimed that the Genesis had "Blast Processing," which supposedly made it faster and more powerful than the SNES. In reality, "Blast Processing" was more of a marketing term than a technical feature. It referred to the Genesis's ability to handle fast-moving graphics and sprites, thanks to its faster CPU. While it wasn't a specific technology, the Genesis did have a slight edge in processing speed, which allowed for smoother and faster gameplay in certain titles.

In the end, both consoles left a lasting legacy and continue to be cherished by retro gaming enthusiasts. Whether you preferred the colourful and immersive worlds of the SNES or the adrenaline-pumping action of the Genesis, the 16-bit era offered something for everyone.

PC Engine (TurboGrafx-16)

Pros: Unique game library with many hidden gems, compact design.

Cons: Less popular in the West, so games and accessories can be harder to find and more expensive.

Sega Megadrive (Genesis)

Pros: Strong game library with classics like Sonic the Hedgehog, affordable hardware and games.

Cons: Somewhat dated graphics and sound compared to the SNES.

Super Nintendo (SNES)

Pros: Extensive and high-quality game library, great graphics and sound for its time.

Cons: Can be more expensive due to its popularity and demand.

Here are some notable games that ran at or near 60 FPS on each of the classic consoles:

PC Engine (TurboGrafx-16)

R-Type: Known for its smooth gameplay and challenging levels.

Bonk's Adventure: A popular platformer with fluid animations.

Sega Megadrive (Genesis)

Sonic the Hedgehog: Famous for its fast-paced gameplay and smooth frame rate.

Gunstar Heroes: A run-and-gun game with impressive graphics and performance.

Super Nintendo (SNES)

F-Zero: A futuristic racing game that maintained a high frame rate.

Super Mario World: One of the most beloved platformers, known for its smooth gameplay.

Overall Recommendation

Sega Megadrive (Genesis): Often considered the best bang for buck due to its affordable hardware and extensive game library. While not a perfect port, it retained much of the arcade's charm and added two extra levels and new play modes. This version became a staple for Mega Drive owners and is fondly remembered for its faithful adaptation.
Golden Axe on 16-bit Computers

Golden Axe, the iconic hack-and-slash game, made its way to various 16-bit computers, including the Amiga 500. Let's take a look at how it fared on these platforms.

The Amiga 500 version of Golden Axe is often praised as one of the best home conversions of the arcade classic. The graphics were vibrant and closely resembled the arcade original, with detailed sprites and smooth animations. The sound effects and music were also well-executed, adding to the immersive experience. The gameplay remained faithful to the arcade version, offering the same characters, levels, and magic attacks. Overall, the Amiga 500 version is considered a near-flawless port when considering the hardware.

The Atari ST version of Golden Axe was similar to the Amiga 500 version in terms of graphics and gameplay. However, it lacked some of the polish and smoothness found in the Amiga version. The sound quality was also slightly inferior, but it still provided an enjoyable experience for fans of the game.
Commodore 64
The Commodore 64 version of Golden Axe faced more significant limitations due to the hardware. The graphics were less detailed, and the gameplay was simplified. Despite these constraints, it managed to capture the essence of the original game and provided a fun experience for C64 owners.
MS-DOS
The MS-DOS version of Golden Axe was another notable port. While it didn't quite match the quality of the Amiga 500 version, it offered decent graphics and sound for the time. The gameplay was faithful to the arcade version, making it a popular choice for PC gamers.

In summary, Golden Axe on 16-bit computers, particularly the Amiga 500, delivered a satisfying experience that captured the magic of the arcade original. Each version had its strengths and weaknesses, but they all contributed to the game's enduring legacy.

8-bit Computers and Consoles
Golden Axe was also ported to various 8-bit systems, including the Sega Master System, Commodore 64, and ZX Spectrum. These versions, while impressive for their time, couldn't quite capture the magic of the arcade original. The limitations of 8-bit hardware resulted in less detailed graphics and simplified gameplay, making these ports the least favourable among fans.

Special Mention - Golden Axe on the Amstrad CPC

Golden Axe, a beloved arcade classic, found its way to the Amstrad CPC, (My version) bringing the hack-and-slash action to Alan Sugar's home computers. While the conversion faced the limitations of the hardware, it still managed to capture the essence of the original game.

Gameplay

The gameplay on the Amstrad CPC remained faithful to the arcade version, with players choosing from three characters: Ax Battler, Tyris Flare, and Gilius Thunderhead. Each character had unique abilities and magic attacks, which added variety to the gameplay. The controls were responsive, and the game offered a challenging yet enjoyable experience
Ratings
Using Metacritic as a reference, the arcade version of Golden Axe generally receives the highest praise, followed by the Mega Drive version. The 8-bit ports, while nostalgic, tend to rank lower due to their technical constraints.

In summary, Golden Axe's legacy spans multiple platforms, with the arcade and Mega Drive versions standing out as the best representations of this iconic game. Whether you're a seasoned gamer or new to retro titles, Golden Axe offers a timeless adventure worth experiencing.

Did you know?

Here's an interesting fact about Golden Axe: The game was originally intended to be a role-playing game (RPG) similar to Enix's Dragon Quest. However, Sega executives wanted a game that would appeal to the arcade market, so the concept was changed to a hack-and-slash adventure inspired by the 1982 film Conan the Barbarian

95 Arcade Games to Play Before You Grow Up!

I hope you enjoy my latest video. These are my best picks from the games I owned and played. I think it's testament to the PS1 that it still shows, with the lights out, no matter the dated graphics... Games can still be a little bit scary.

I had the Amsoft ten pack that came with £100 worth of free software. It felt like a great time to be alive and I played those Amsoft titles until they refused to load. Later I discovered that you could pretty much walk into any supermarket or retail store and buy additional games. One problem, pocket money was rare back then, so that meant I could look, but not touch. I remember saving up for Outrun on the Amstrad. Took me around 6 weeks, then disaster struck. The game was a complete travesty, a massive Christmas Turkey. That was the day I learned a valuable lesson, don't believe everything you read. That's when I found Amstrad Action, they were trustworthy and I never bought a bad game again. This is about all those game I finally managed to purchase and stick with. Back then I purchased a game and would be stuck with it for for months on end until I could finally afford a new game. I think this allowed me to uncover almost every aspect of a game and learn the majority of its secrets. These are the games I owned and loved, but hardly ever get a mention.

The Nintendo 64, or N64 for short, is a true gem of a console that has stood the test of time.

First of all, let's talk about the controller. Sure, it might look a bit odd with its three-pronged design, but let me tell you, it's a thing of ergonomic beauty. The joystick is perfectly placed for maximum precision, and the buttons are all easily accessible. Plus, the rumble pack was a stroke of genius, adding a whole new level of immersion to games.

But it's not just the controller that makes the N64 great. Oh no. The games themselves are truly fantastic. Take Super Mario 64, for example. This was the first 3D Mario game, and it completely revolutionised the platformer genre. The game's open-world design allowed for a level of exploration and discovery that was unheard of at the time.

Then there's The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, which is widely considered to be one of the greatest video games of all time. The game's epic story, memorable characters, and innovative gameplay mechanics make it a true masterpiece. And let's not forget about GoldenEye 007, the game that practically invented the first-person shooter genre on consoles. The game's multiplayer mode was a revelation, allowing friends to battle it out in split-screen mode for hours on end.

The N64 may be over two decades old at this point, but it's still a fantastic console that deserves to be celebrated. While I cannot confirm or deny whether or not the programmers of the old ZX Spectrum were on drugs, I can say that some of the games that were created for the the 8bit were certainly quite strange at times.

One example is "Jet Set Willy" by Matthew Smith, which featured 'Willy' our protagonist who had to clean up a mansion after a wild party. The game was known for its bizarre visuals and challenging gameplay.

While the reasons behind the oddness of these games may be up for debate, it's clear that they left a lasting impression on many gamers who played them.

#zxspectrum #48k #sinclair #retrogaming

SEGA SATURN TOP 10

"Welcome to the next Level"

The Sega Saturn is a 32-bit video game console that was developed and produced by Sega. It was first released in Japan in 1994, and later in North America and Europe in 1995. The Sega Saturn was designed to compete with Sony's PlayStation and Nintendo's Ultra 64 (later known as the Nintendo 64). The console featured hardware support for 3D graphics and featured a library of over 900 games. It was well received in Japan but struggled to gain market share in the US and Europe, ultimately leading to its discontinuation in 1998. Despite its commercial failure, the Sega Saturn is remembered for its strong line-up of 2D games and for its innovative hardware design.

Pros:

1. Advanced 3D graphics capabilities: The Sega Saturn was able to produce high-quality 3D graphics that were on par with, and in some cases even better than, those of its competitors.

2.	Extensive library of games: The Saturn had a wide variety of games available, from popular franchises like "Sonic the Hedgehog" to unique and experimental titles.

3.	Good for 2D games: The Saturn was able to handle high-resolution graphics and multiple textures, which made 2D games look more detailed than on other consoles.

4.	Strong developer support: Many developers created games for the Saturn, and it was a popular choice for those working on 3D games.

Cons:

1.	Complex architecture: The Saturn's architecture was complex, which made developing games for the console more difficult.

2.	Lack of clear marketing message: Sega didn't market the Saturn effectively, which made it difficult for consumers to understand what the console was capable of.

3.	Stiff competition: The Saturn faced stiff competition from Sony's PlayStation console, which ultimately outsold the Saturn by a large margin.

4.	Limited commercial success: The Saturn did not perform as well commercially as Sega had hoped, and ultimately sold fewer units than its competitors.

ZX Spectrum | The Six Most Important Games

ZX Spectrum | The Six Most Important Games Sinclair Research Ltd. released the ZX Spectrum, an 8-bit personal home computer, in the United Kingdom in 1982. The Spectrum was one of the first mainstream home computers in the United Kingdom, comparable to the Commodore 64 in the United States. The advent of the ZX Spectrum resulted in a surge in firms developing software and hardware for the system, and some credit it with launching the UK IT industry. Head Over Heels, Jet Set Willy, Skool Daze, Renegade, R-Type, Knight Lore, Dizzy, The Hobbit, Way of the Exploding Fist, and Match Day 2 were amongst the top 10 ZX Spectrum games.

Amstrad CPC | Fire & Forget Walkthrough + Homebrew

Restore peace on earth and collect a high score while doing so in the first one of the Fire and Forget games by Titus.
