Classic Travelling has driven the route to ensure it is scenic and interesting as well as visited each hotel to make certain we have the most pleasant accommodation in the area and they have appropriate standards of comfort and charm, along with suitable parking.

Accommodation

Stay in some of the most glorious hotels, including stunning chateaux, cosy wooden chalets and medieval townhouses. All the hotels are individual and unique and, overall, are of an extremely high standard. Due to the nature and age of these hotels the rooms vary from charmingly comfortable to the utmost luxury. We have hand-picked the accommodation for their unique atmosphere and style. All accommodation includes breakfast, and dinner is included where stated. Suitable parking is, of course, a feature of each hotel, but it is rarely undercover.

Day 2: May 29

Drive across northern France to the beautiful Alsace region.
Drive south to visit the captivating town of Colmar. A little further south still is the town of Mulhouse, home of the Musee National de L’Automobile, also known as the Schlumpf Collection, the most stupendous motor museum in the world, and well worth a visit. Leave France behind and cross into Germany. Virtually every road in this area of the Black Forest is designated as a scenic route and the driving is superb. Lake Constance is a beautiful area with lovely half-timbered houses in the towns along the shore. Drive the corniche road along the northern shore, through Meersburg, and pay a visit to the Zeppelin Museum, before heading to the medieval, tiny island town of Lindau. Stay in a beautiful quality, family-run hotel next to the lake towards Switzerland. Dine overlooking Lake Constance.

Day 4: May 31

Heading east from Lindau enter Bavaria, home of many of Germany’s best-known cliches: beer, lederhosen, sausage dogs, sauerkraut and fairy-tale castles. Drive along the thrilling Alpine Road and visit the castles of Hohenschwangau and Neuschwanstein, the latter is the ultimate story-book castle. Drive through Garmisch-Partenkirchen, host of the 1936 Winter Olympics and onto Tegernsee. Stay in a charming country house hotel for the next two nights, on the outskirts of a small spa town, one of the country’s most elegant resorts, and where the thermal springs are at a constant 27ºC. Dinner is included tonight only.

Day 5: June 1

A day off to either relax, or take a boat trip around the lake, stopping off at Tegernsee to visit the town and brewery. Tegernsee is among Bavaria’s most beautiful lakes and the area has long been a favourite with the rich. The little town of Tegernsee has a 1300 year old monastery, now a castle. From the southern end of the lake there is a cable car up into the mountains giving access to wonderful views and walks.

Day 6: June 2

Drive along scenic roads all the way into Austria and to Kitzbuhel, where the tour will spend the next two nights. Drive north to Chur and then east to Andermatt. Climb over the beautiful Susten Pass, and see the glaciers before descending to Brienzer See. Pass through Meiringen, location of Sherlock Holmes’ ‘death’, and head for Brienz, a quiet town renowned for its beautiful wood carvings. Visit the wonderful ethnographic museum at Ballenberg, which shows Switzerland as it used to be with buildings, animals, historical gardens and fields, and typical crafts and customs. Stay in a gorgeous and charming hotel above Brienz and its lake, where dinner is included.

It is a gentle drive along from Brienz to the spa town of Interlaken, nestled between the lakes of Thun See and Brienzer See. There is a wonderful side trip to the stunning Lauterbrunnen Valley and the Jungfraujoch. Take a trip up to the Schilthorn, by funicular railway, where the James Bond film ‘On Her Majesty’s Secret Service’ was filmed. Then wind your way through classic Swiss scenery to Gstaad, playground of the rich and famous, and a perfect place for afternoon tea and a stroll. If you are feeling energetic try some summer skiing on the glacier at Les Diablerets. Stay for two nights in the beautiful town of Chateau d’Oex in an 18th century wooden chalet, blessed with delightful views across the valley. Cross from the UK to Denmark and spend a night in Jutland. Then cross to Kristiansand in southern Norway and stay overnight near Stavanger. Drive north to Bergen for a couple of nights, and then onto Alesund for two more nights. Leave the coast and turn inland to the fjords and stay at the end of most famed, Geirangerfjord, where we shall stay for two nights. Climb over the mountains and pass through valleys to Lom and then onto Sogndal. Take a ferry cruise across Sogndalfjord and then stay on the shores of the Hardangerfjord, famed for its orchards. Then return to Stavanger for the ferry crossing back Denmark and then to the UK.

As of September 2008 there are no direct sailings from the Newcastle to Norway, hence the route now via Denmark.

You will pay a visit to the Anderton Boat Lift – the first of its kind in the world – an industrial heritage marvel that hoisted fully laden salt barges from off the River Weaver over 50 feet onto the Trent & Mersey canal. You will pass through picturesque villages with their black and white timber framed Tudor cottages, catch a glimpse of the Jodrell Bank telescope that dominates its surroundings, cross innumerable canal bridges, even climb the occasional hill.

In Derbyshire it will be all hills, the towering tors and rocky outcrops, grand country houses (such as Chatsworth), and the spa towns of Buxton and Matlock Bath.

The contrast between the two counties is quite dramatic and fitting them together into a tour will be quite a challenge.
Limited to 35 cars the tour commences on Sunday evening, 26th September with dinner. There will be three days of driving on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and the tour finishes after breakfast on Thursday 30th
September.

Mike Griffiths and Sylvia Percy are already at work on the detail. It will be up to their usual high standard.

Itinerary

The two counties of Cheshire (plains) and Derbyshire (peaks) offer contrasting topography, and they are also interlaced with some great driving roads, spectacular countryside, and are steeped in Victorian industrial grandeur.
Over the next few months Mike Griffiths will be devising routes and visits. We are spoilt for choice with lovely Cheshire villages with their black and white timbered, Tudor cottages, the picturesque Shropshire Union and Trent & Mersey canals, the Anderton Boat Lift, salt mines, Jodrell Bank telescope, stately homes and gardens. Then there is Derbyshire and the Peak district with Buxton, the Victorian spa town, the Goyt valley, Castleton, with its caverns and majestic limestone bluffs, Chatsworth House and a host of other grand country mansions.
There will be stops for coffee (comfort) and lunch, and time for a little retail therapy – Cheshire has some of the finest shops. We trust you will like the format.

Imagine a touring holiday which includes superb mountain driving in the morning, a relaxing afternoon at a fabulous ocean beach, a cozy dinner at an historic country inn, and a nightcap before retiring to a luxury hotel suite.

From late summer until around November 1st, Mother Nature paints her pictures in every shade in the spectrum, from the deepest oil colors of the reds and purples to the delicate pastels of the yellows and greens. Starting at the northernmost points in New England, she slowly sweeps her brush across the landscape, from the mountaintops to the city parks, from sea to rural settings in the west. Visitors who travel to see the spectacular foliage are known as ‘Leaf-Peepers’.

New England is well known as a distinctly American region rich in history, culture, and natural beauty. It is particularly known for its brilliant autumns to drive lazily through mountains blanketed with gold-and-red fall foliage. There are also plenty of other things to do such as stopping at country stores, orchards, local restaurants, wandering through antique shops lining a peaceful village green, exploring the museums and shopping of the cities, or to get a head start on some cool day hikes in the mountains and countryside.

Every autumn throughout New England, diminishing length of daylight and falling temperatures induce trees to shed billions of tons of leaves. Preceding this preparation for winter the trees present a spectacular color show. Leaves that have been green all summer turn to brilliant shades of yellow, orange, and red.

The dramatic landscape of the Brecon Beacons National Park and the Cambrian Mountains is of sweeping views and of rugged escarpments, mountains and untamed moorland. Panoramas that stretch into the distance and take your breath away. Ancient woodlands on the valley sides have created a haven for wildlife, with varied species of trees, wild flowers and birds. Encompassing two circular tours, discover and enjoy the Breacon Beacons, the Cambrian Mountains and the Wye Valley’s stunning beauty and checkered history between the ancient clans and Kings.

An added bonus is the well-equipped gym, jacuzzi and sauna in the basement of the hotel. There is also the swimming pool, but as this is an outdoor one, you may wish to check the weather before jumping in! The hotel has a lovely terrace overlooking the Usk Valley ideal for sipping your brandy on a warm summers evening, whilst on colder days the aforementioned sipping can be equally satisfactory in the cosy, wood-panelled library.

Imagine a vacation which includes superb mountain driving in the morning, a relaxing afternoon at a fabulous ocean beach, a cosy dinner at an historic country inn, and a nightcap before retiring to a luxury hotel suite.

This route includes small country towns, chocolate box villages and typically English countryside.

“The most English and the least spoiled of all our countrysides” wrote JB Priestley in 1933.

The honey-yellow stone towns and villages of the Cotswolds have enchanted visitors for generations and it is a perfect touring area with quiet, meandering roads and quaint architecture. The Thames has played a major role in the history of England through the centuries. It rises in the Cotswolds and flows some 210 miles to London and the sea. Villages and towns are scattered along its banks with pleasant walks and delightful scenery. This region is an area of outstanding natural beauty and our suggested route will take you along the most scenic drives, and offers plenty to do and see.

Accommodation

In 1666, King Charles II made New Park Manor, in the heart of this ancient forest, his favourite hunting lodge on his return from exile in France, and his royal coat of arms is displayed prominently above the fireplace in the award-winning Stag Restaurant.

New Park Manor is the perfect getaway destination for anyone wishing to explore and really appreciate the unique mosaic of woodland, heathland and wetland that comprise this ancient landscape – and it exudes style.

Not only are you able to watch the deer, the ponies, the birds and the foxes from most rooms but the Polo Bar is strikingly contemporary with a stone flagged floor and wood panelling; the Rufus Lounge, with its deep leather armchairs, rich, warm colours and sports memorabilia, has the character and atmosphere of a convivial club.

To stay at New Park Manor is a great experience. Your room is not just a place to sleep. It’s also a place to lounge, chat, listen to music and generally chill out. The beds are big and bold and the duvets luxurious. All rooms benefit from fine fabrics, some with original period features and some delightful parkland views all combine to create a unique experience. Quality toiletries from Culpeper and other little touches create the perfect welcome when you first open the door.

The rooms are located on the first and top, attic floors in the floor of the original Manor and some feature sloped ceilings. They are lovely and cosy for a couple and have lots of charm as well as a great sense of history. All are decorated individually in a true English Country House style. Please be aware that because of the nature of this historic building or, in some cases, sloped ceiling heights, these rooms are not able to offer a full standing shower facility. They do, however, have a hand held shower attachment on the bath. Full modern shower facilities are of course freely available in the Bath House Spa.

The spa includes a lovely pool, steam room, sauna, hydro-spa pool, indoor and outdoor hot tubs, and ‘experience’ showers.
