Generations of scholars have relied heavily on ancient literary accounts of the Roman sacking of the city-state of Corinth in the mid-second century, BC, to interpret archaeological remains in the city. Many Greek and Roman authors pain grim pictures of utter destruction and the following abandonment while drawing parallels to the razing of Carthage, Rome's greatest enemy. However, new archaeological evidence offers numerous challenges to both ancient descriptions and modern interpretations. Dr. James will detail these new developments and show how many Corinthians dealt with the aftermath of this well-known ancient destruction.

Elegiac Onomastics in the Roman Epigraphic Archive

Why do the names of the Latin love poets’ girlfriends overlap with the Greek names of slaves and freedwomen living in Rome at that time?

Looking at contemporary inscriptional evidence, Professor Keith will argue that Roman elegy is intimately correlated with Roman imperialism in its celebration of the sexual spoils of military conquest.

Professor Keith is a well-known scholar of Augustan poetry; she has a recent excellent book on Propertius, the now classic Engendering Rome: Women in Latin Epic, and many articles on Roman poetry and Ovid. She's currently editor of Phoenix.

Please join us as we welcome, Doctoral Candidate, Aoife Fitzgerald, from the University of Kent on February, 11th at 5:00pm in Eaton Humanities 1B80.

She will speak on "Ostia: Excavation and Visualization,".

Ostia is a very important city for our knowledge of the Roman world, especially that of architectural development. The site has a long history of excavation, which has revealed its strategic importance from the 4th century BC until the 5th century AD. Previous excavation focused mainly on the 2nd century AD structures of the city and neglected later phases, which has resulted in a significant gap in our knowledge. However, the recently completed Kent-Berlin excavations have been able to reveal much new information on this dynamic late antique period. Using information from the excavations, 3D ‘visualizations’ of sections of the city have been produced, which accurately reconstruct scenes from everyday life in the late antique city. This work is intended to highlight the late antique period for both scholars and the public alike.

One of the most vexing questions faced by archaeologists is how to correlate the material remains that they excavate to individuals or groups of different socio-economic statuses. So while the activities of aristocrats are relatively easy to identify archaeologically, the other 95% of the population is largely invisible. A new approach to this issue comes from an analysis of historical documents from medieval Europe, which allow us to reconstruct the economic activities and average household possessions of the urban and rural poor. Using this new model, pottery and other archaeological data related to houses from various sites and periods can be evaluated to include (or exclude) evidence for the poor and middle classes.

As described on his website (http://www.joesodyssey.com), "Joe Goodkin's *Odyssey* is a 30 minute original musical composition for solo acoustic guitar and voice, which tells the story of Homer's *Odyssey* in a series of 24 short songs. It has been performed over 100 times in varied settings for audiences of all ages."

“Herodotus and Egypt.”

Presented by: Professor Peter Hunt, University of Colorado, Boulder, Department of Classics

Book II of Herodotus’ Histories, written in Greek in the 5th century BC, contains 75 pages devoted to Egyptian customs and history. By that time Greek traders and mercenaries had lived in Egypt for centuries and Herodotus claims himself to have visited many of the monuments there. We might expect a wealth of detailed first-hand information from him. His account, however, contains glaring mistakes ranging from the “mane” of the hippopotamus to egregious chronological blunders to invented pharaohs and false generalizations—such as his claim that the Egyptians do everything in the opposite way from the rest of humanity. This lecture will try to explain the oddities of Herodotus’ account and will assess what Herodotus can still contribute to our knowledge of ancient Egypt—particularly Egypt of the Saite and Persian periods.

Peter Hunt is a professor in the Department of Classics at the University of Colorado at Boulder. His research interest is classical Greek history, a field on which he has published two books: Slaves, Warfare, and Ideology in the Greek Historians (Cambridge 1998) and War, Peace, and Alliance in Demosthenes’ Athens (Cambridge 2010). He has taught graduate-level courses on Herodotus and has a layperson’s fascination with ancient Egypt.

WHAT IS A SLAVE SOCIETY?

An International Conference on the Nature
of Slavery as a Global Historical Phenomenon.

This conference proposes to confront the question, What is a Slave Society?, by creating a space for scholars of western and non-western cultures to debate its implications from a global, cross-cultural perspective. Questions we hope to address include: What is a slave? Can we arrive at a cross-cultural definition or must we always attend to cultural difference? To what degree are slaveholding practices universal and to what degree are they culturally contingent? Is it useful to categorize certain societies as uniquely intensive in their slaveholding practices? If so, what societies can be said to fit into the category of 'slave society'?

Recent work in Cognitive Neuro-Linguistics provides a more solid theoretical basis for the study of meter as a pathway into the literary interpretation of Homeric epic than do aesthetic approaches on which scholars have previously relied. Drawing on research into “Event-Related Brain Potentials” (ERPs), Professor Schein’s paper focuses on Hermann’s Bridge as a point of departure for discussion of the opening of Iliad 24, where there are conspicuous violations of this metrical norm in lines 35 and 60. He argues that these metrical anomalies resonate meaningfully with other metrical and stylistic features in this part of the poem, with the presence in the opening of Book 24 of mythological details familiar from the Cyclic epic, the Kypria, with the Homeric representation of Thetis, and with central themes and values of the Iliad.
