This book is great!!! It's full of wonderful excellent exercises to help you grow as an artist!

TL:DR:- If you struggle with accurately depicting emotions and personalities, this is the best book I have seen so far.- It is presented as a game (but you don't have to play to use this book, you can just learn from all the info), if you like RPG and drawing, get out your dices because you will use them here.- Great for art students and those interested in character design in any field, for fun or as profession (games, comics, visual novels, book illustration, fanart, etc) where you need to come up with original characters or original expressions/ moods/ actions. Whether you know exactly what characteristics to give to your character or prefer to randomly choose them, this book will teach you how to portray them without ambiguity (no more "oh he looks angry, is he angry?" "no! he was supposed to be holding back his tears!")-Keep in mind that this book focuses on humans and humanoids, if you want to create creatures, I would rather suggest Fantasy Genesis (same author, also a game and drawing advice) or MangaMatrix (just a system to generate human/humanoids/creature characters, no drawing advice, not a game)------This book is meant to teach you how to create original characters (humans and creatures), paying attention to emotions, facial expressions, behaviors, archetypes, age, costume design, cultural background, profession, etc. Every page is filled with drawing lessons so that you can conveying attitudes, emotions and overall make your characters more interesting and accurate to what you want to transmit. (For example "Villain's resting features tend to be tighter, more articulated, their irises sometimes smaller, more beady and intense, and often shift in contradictory directions") It also has mini lessons on drawing basics: human anatomy, folds and fabric, drawing from life and reference, silhouetting and exercises to hone your skills.What makes this book special is that it incorporates gaming!. There are boxes all over the book with themed, enumerated lists (for example, emotions, expressions, actions, occupations). Each one says the type and number of dices you will need for each given box and by combining different boxes you can create random characters that will challenge your creativity and make you explore new possibilities. For those of you who have enjoyed role play games and want to create original characters, you are going to love this approach. It can be a great way to have fun and create drawing challenges with other people while at the same time develop your skills.I also have MangaMatrix book, which is also for creating original characters, but that one focuses on the physical appearance and more meant for humanoids and creatures (and it is not a game, just a matrix system) without any drawing lessons or tips. Fantasy Genesis Characters goes beyond the appearance, it focuses on creating rich, all around characters that tell a story, not just a static, expressionless figure on the paper and it is full of drawing instructions. Keep in mind that this one focuses on humans and humanoids, if you prefer only creatures and humanoids, I would rather suggest Fantasy Genesis (also presented as a game) or MangaMatrix (but be aware that you are on your own when it comes to drawing advice)

I'm not a gamer so my first reaction upon flipping through this book was to put it down and move on to the next book in the Arts section at the bookstore. But a few of the drawings caught my eye and I looked deeper and wound up buying the book. I'm really glad that I did because in just a few weeks my understanding of how to convey emotion on the human face has improved enormously. Mostly I've been trying to draw what I see. I always like the result but I'm no portrait artist so there are always subtle differences between the author's illustration and my copy of it. Sometimes those differences result in a face showing a different emotion. Trying to understand those differences is a great learning experience.Now that I've read the book I may just go ahead and grab a pair of dice and roll a few combinations to create my own faces. But even if that doesn't happen, I know that I'll still get many hours of enjoyment trying to render Lukacs' drawings.

While a little out of date, it's a book essential to a senior design class, especially for chemical engineers. Explains basic concepts of project cost estimation, process safety, equipment sizing, utility costs, and general design principles for a plant. This book is 10+ years old, but worked fine for my class this past year. Plenty of examples worked out, are shown. Specific tables relating to costs of equipment/materials, may differ from present value.

I was a student of Dr. Seider at the University of Pennsylvania in the 1970's. Reviewing the table of contents for this book, I recognize a lot of the material from courses I took with Dr. Seider at Penn. I forgot how much fun it is to read good, old-fashioned correspondence. These letters, especially the ones written by the central character, are jaunty, naughty, full of personality and spunk. Her response to a dinner invitation, for example, is â€œYes, dinner with pleasure. Iâ€™ll wear my new dress and eat like a pig.â€Pigs end up playing a major role in this wonderful little book when the author connects with some villagers on Guernsey Island, who have recently emerged from German occupation during World War II. She learns how they outsmarted the Germans, who were fussy over farm animals, according to one explanation of how The Guernsey Literary Society came about in the first place. Spoiler alert: it was because of pigs.Their mischievous pig roast compelled them to keep up appearances as the literary society they indeed were not. Yet, as one of the inciters of the pig roast writes, â€œOnce two members read the same book, they could argue, which was our great delight.â€ Their original naughtiness eventually morphed into a sweet band of friends who â€œread books, talked books, argued over books, and became dearer and dearer to one another.â€The characters are vivid and easy to love, like the characters in Foyleâ€™s War and 84 Charring Cross Road, carrying on despite the undertow of war rumbling beneath them. The writing delighted me, because so much of it made the familiar, ordinary things of life fresh and beautiful and fun (like when the author confesses really like to leave London to live on Guernsey instead). She writes, â€œThe only thing Iâ€™d truly miss about London are Sidney and Susan, the nearness to Scotland, new plays, and Harrods Food Hall.â€ Refreshing: a little bit naughty, a little bit spice. My favorite line in the whole book is her contention that, â€œReading good books ruins you for enjoying bad books.â€I consider it a compliment to say that this was such a good book, it may have ruined me for whatever oneâ€™s next!

I think, well, itâ€™s either going to be very, very good or will peter out after the second chapter and become tedious, repetitive, and boring.Iâ€™m happy to say that â€œThe Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Societyâ€ by Mary Ann Shaffer falls definitely into the former and not the latter category. It is very, very good, and (if I had to assess why) itâ€™s because Shaffer tells a story and stays in command of the story to the very end. And the story itself is a dramatic one and based upon a recent historic event â€“ the occupation of the Channel Islands by the German army during World War II.The Channel Islands lie just off the coast of France but have allegiance to Great Britain. Technically, they are not part of Great Britain, but their inhabitants sound (to an American ear) as British as any Briton. They were owned by Duke William of Normandy, who retained ownership after he invaded and won Britain in 1066.Because of the proximity to France, the British Army and Navy couldnâ€™t defend the islands, so they became as much German-occupied territory as France and the rest of Europe. Their people were treated much the same as the rest of Europe. Which means very badly indeed.But itâ€™s now 1946, and writer Juliet Ashton, fresh from a rather surprising success as the author of a collection of her funny wartime columns for the Spectator, is casting about for a new project. Sheâ€™s previously written a biography of Anne Bronte, which wasnâ€™t exactly a bestseller. So, the success of her collection of columns is welcome news indeed.Juliet receives a letter from a Guernsey resident named Dawsey Adams, a pig farmer interested in, of all things, the 19th century writer Charles Lamb. He has come to own a book of Lambâ€™s writings originally owned by Juliet (her name and former London address â€“ bombed by a V2 rocket late in the war â€“ is written in the inside cover. She begins a correspondence with Mr. Adams, and soon finds herself writing to other members of The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, a reading group formed rather hurriedly (as in, on the spot) when the Germans found a group of Guernsey residents out after curfew.In London, Juliet finds herself being amorously and rather relentlessly pursued by a wealthy American, but she isnâ€™t sure if sheâ€™s interested or not. So a trip to Guernsey is just the ticket to work on a book and escape the would-be lover. And it is on Guernsey that Juliet discovers but never meets the founder of the society, Catherine McKenna, whose story becomes a story of the war, how people survived the occupation, and how they didnâ€™t.Shaffer, who worked as an editor and librarian and also in bookshops, died in 2008. The novel was completed by her niece, Annie Barrows, the author of the â€œIvy & Beanâ€ and other childrenâ€™s stories and the novel â€œThe Truth According to Usâ€ (2015). And while I want to tell you that you always want to see an author enjoy a well-deserved success, there is something about all of this that fits the authorâ€™s story and the story she tells.â€œThe Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Societyâ€ will make you laugh and make you cry. Heaps of reviews so not much I can add here...but....Lucky me, I got to read it while visiting Guernsey!Was this book worth the Kindle Price? $8.63 USD. Yup, absolutely!Is it a page turner? Yes.Did I want to be reading this book when I wasn't reading this book? Yes.Did I learn anything from this book?Yes, loved all the information so subtly provided about the German occupation. It's like a history book without the boring bits.Did I think about this book after I was finished reading.Yes, it has stayed with me. It's been a month since I put it down but I still do think of it. Luckily, I was able to get a fridge magnet of the book cover while in Guernsey.My only negative comment - now this may sound petty as I really did enjoy all the books and all the characters! But I did notice they all have the same voice. We don't all write letters in the same style and this was not reflected in the book. All the letters were written in the same particular witty style. Made for good fun reading but I did find that a bit strange as like I said, we do all write differently!

I really wanted to love this book, but it was just "ok" for me. I did not enjoy the format of it, although many would not really care about that aspect. It is written as correspondence between many characters. I did really enjoy the characters, though, and did not have any difficulty following the story. However, I really wish there was a bit more discussion of Juliet and Dawsey's relationship. It just seemed to come out of the blue, with no real excitement leading up to it. I didn't get much satisfaction out of it, for that reason. It was a very cute book, though, and I love a book about books and reading. Very well-written. I will definitely watch the Netflix adaptation - I have a feeling this is going to be one of those instances where I like the movie better than the book, and those times are rare.

I had to return this product because it came with an extra card, but it was also missing a card. I also thought the name used for Song of Solomon would be confusing for preschoolers.

The content is great, but the book arrived in poor condition. Pgs 159-170 are unreadable, and are torn, glued, and taped with black tape (couldnâ€™t at least use transparent?). I need this book for class and now Iâ€™m not gonna have access to a chunk of content. Please send me a new one; Iâ€™ll be happy to send the new one back when receiving the old one - I need to hold onto this so I can get my assignments done until the new one arrives. One of my favorite Shakespeare plays with an easy to read translation, yes please. I have a BA in English, so reading Shakespeare is easy for me, but this book was a gft. The recipient really enjoyed reading Shakespeare in plain English.

I am a big fan of Shakespeare whether it be a tragedy or a comedy. And this is one of the best comedies I've ever read. If you have ever seen the play or even just a movie of Twelfth Night you will like this. It is also a good way to introduce Shakespeare to your teenager or child.

I love, love, love this play!! This translation made Shakespeare so much more funny and enjoyable! Would recommend this to anyone, young or old, for leisure reading, studying, or just trying to get their foot in the door with Shakespeare. It is far less intimidating with the translation.

Yes, this is the play, but it's a print on demand, from digireads, who is taking advantage of no copyright on Shakspeare to churn out mediocre editions. So glad Amazon let me return it and get the Folger's edition which has actual authority on Shakespeare's plays.

This is Shakespeare! It's awesome!. It is one of his comedies, and it's so good. I highly recommend this. I bought it for a class I took on Shakespeare, and it was such a good introduction to his comedies. Written for the period around Christmas, hence the title Twelfth Night, (or What You Will). This version is a new edition by New Cambridge University Press, and it's lovely. This edition is edited by Elizabeth Story Donno, and its introduction is by Penny Gay. They both do a wonderful job. Buy it. You will not regret it.

My son was in the play for his high school, and this helped in giving him some direction as to what was really being implied. Most schools don't teach Shakespeare and the ones that still do seem to only hit on Romeo and Juliet but only lightly- then show the movie. Strongly suggest NO FEAR for any Shakespeare play your child might be studying (or performing).

One of Shakespeare's classics. I read it years ago & recently bought it to study for theatre. I found it an amusing, light-hearted book with endearing characters, written by one of the greatest poets & masters of language.

If anyone is wondering, this is essentially a combination of the Andrews text for the 901 and 902 (hardware, and software), combined into one text. I bought it because I returned my textbooks. I use it all the time for reference. Great text, especially if you're studying for the exams.

Amazon had this book for roughly $125 cheaper than that of my school's bookstore. I've finished my course, and finished top of my class. I recommend searching Amazon for school books, as it's usually quite a bit cheaper. My school offers a price-match, but I wasn't going to put up with that, just to rent the book. I wanted a hard copy for myself.

Fantastic book, love the layout of the chapters making it easy to understand.

Too much of the material is not current with the current Microsoft standards. The text is overpriced for the value you receive.

What can I say? It's just a textbook. I got an A in the class.

The cover is full of flaws from smudging to bends. Not what I expect from an expensive book.

This is cheaper than my school's price for sure. Saved about 30 bucks

One of the best golden books for children counting age and younger! This book is sweet and simple. It follows a little duckling who is looking for someone to take a walk with him, he comes across one of this animal, two of that, etc.. When he reaches the last animals (a group of pigs) they tell him he needs to walk home because it is time for dinner. Just when the duckling realizes he is lost, his family comes around the corner and he decides that this is the best way to take a walk. Children will learn different animals, counting, and a sweet little family message at the end! I was quite impressed with the sturdy quality of this particular book.

This is one of those great books from my own childhood that I love sharing with my daughter. While I've bought a great deal of Little Golden Books, not all of them knocked it out of the park. This one, though, is a really good book. Works nicely for bedtime books.

Love these Golden Baby board books. They are what you would expect from Golden and very well made. Not tiny, but not a large book either, perfect middle of the road size. We have several that were available. I wish they would print more of these. This one makes a nice Easter basket gift. Can't think of all the other titles right now, but I think we have Baby Farm Animals, Pokey Little Puppy....really cute books, would recommend them. I bought them when my grandson was a baby and he is still enjoying them as a young toddler.

I teach in an urban setting and frequently hand this to students who don't have or want to do work during study hall. They are AMAZED at what they call "white people rules." As they go out into the work world, it gives them an excellent understanding of what many might consider "normal" behavior and gives them access to the unwritten rules of proper social behaviors.

This was originally a gag gift for my younger brother, who has always been a troublemaker. But I skimmed through it and I believe it will be a valuable read! It has some very useful info on manners surrounding things you don't often think about. I think in some cases it's a good read for anyone, gentleman or lady.

My nephew was in dire need of guidance on how to be a gentleman, as he only has poor male role models in his life. I hope he takes the information to heart.

Good Tips, mostly practical, but I would have liked to see some more depth. At times, it felt a bit like you could find most of what's written here on the web and some info, like how to dress for a king or a president, seems nearly irrelevant unless you're working in diplomatic relations or some high post in the government, which most people are not.

Well, the question is this. Are manners still in style? Personally, I think that they are and that every young man (junior high and older) needs to read this book. Apparently, my son (who I gave it to 15 years ago) and my nephew (who I gave it to this year) disagree and were really not that concerned about the social graces. But perhaps I was vindicated when the real world of business and jobs came on the scene and my son was asking all the questions that this book answers. Fortunately, he had this book (and me) to solve his social and etiquette dilemmas and has launched a successful career. But a lot of stress and panic could have been avoided with the use and reading of this book. Good manners will always be in style and every young man should have and use this book. It is an excellent gift for high school or (better late than never) college graduation and will be the key to climbing the ladder of success in both social and business life.

Semi-fictionalized and well written account of four famous women operatives in the Civil War and the paternalistic, chivalrous, traitorous or just plain foolish men who enabled them. Belle Boyd, Emma Edmonds, Elizabeth Van Lew and Rose Greenhow are all sympathetically drawn. There is plenty of interesting detail for CW buffs as well as photographs. The chronological format, which switches back and forth among the characters can be clunky at times, but the book is definitely worth a read.

The American Civil War is often portrayed as fought by Abraham Lincoln, Robert Lee, Grant, Sherman, McClellan, (and sometimes Matthew Broderick and Denzel Washington) a bunch of plantation owners and escaped slaves.You see what's missing, right? Women didn't fight as soldiers (unless you were Emma Edmondson/Frank Thompson) but they were as integral a part of the war effort as the men--and here Abbott gives us a readable and partly-novelized version of four women who acted as spies during the war. In these portraits of four women, you get a sense of the socially interwoven, small geographical distances (compared to the current US), political manuevering, and social class system that was the background of the Civil War.And the women themselves; two Union, two Confederate spies (the Confederate spies seemed to thrive in the media spotlight in a more flamboyant way than the more secretive Unionists) are fascinating women of their time.You can read the other reviews to find out about who the book is about, so let me just highlight in this review how readable, interesting, and weirdly novelesque the history is in this book. Abbott rotates chapters between each woman, usually cutting off a narrative at some cliff-hangery point like when Union guards come to arrest Belle Boyd, etc. There are primary sources quoted and evocative descriptions of obviously well-researched places like Old Capitol prison, and then there are the "novelized" moments where the narrative takes on a kind of self-conscious literary thrill-seeker quality; such Rose's little daughter's black eyes fervently peeking over snow-white covers when her spy mother puts her to bed during a Union search of her house or the description of Belle's thoughts while she drowned.I like those novelized bits, it made the women seem more real to me than often strictly historically accurate depictions do.Anyway, highly recommended slice of American Civil War history for anyone interested in strong American females' history or Civil War.

The author meticulously researched the material and I learned a great deal about the Civil War, both the logistics and the attitude of those on both sides of the conflict. When the book seemed to stretch on and on, I realized that's what this war must have seemed like to those who lived through it. Everyone thought it would be over quickly. Because the narrative fluctuates among the four women, sometimes I lost tract of who was who since several of the women were similar even thought they were on different sides of the conflict.I considered whether the author could have handled the stories differently and I decided her method was best and she tracked them as the war progressed rather than covering their stores separately. My advice to someone reading the book is to be engaged from the beginning and take a few notes as each woman is introduced so that you recall the basics as the woman is brought up again as the story and the war progresses. An important and overlooked story of female history.

All in all this was an excellent collection of history/biography covering a rarely told element of the Civil War - or any conflict for that matter. The book shares the stories of four women from both sides of the war, and their efforts to aid their cause. As I read this book, my thought was, "well, yeah, of course women who were away from the front lines did things that were courageous and compassionate." Thing is, there's not much depth in terms of reading material on that aspect of things. I was very impressed with two of the women, Emma Edmonds and Elizabeth Van Lew. Don't want to put a spoiler in here, so I'll just say that these two had some steel in them. The others did as well, for other reasons, but Edmonds and Van Lew struck me more than the others. This should be required reading for all young people, regardless of gender, as it tells an important aspect of the Civil War that just isn't covered in many places. Excellent read!

Even though it isn't a very large book the content in it is worth it's weight in gold.It has very good antidotes on how to correct your way of thinking towards rejection. If you have read books similar then most of it you will already know from reading various other books, but there are some very insightful stories of examples that show you how people have used and loved rejection to fulfill their dreams.Overall this is a good book on rejection. If you are looking for something that will throw a different spin on rejection, see how and why we get rejected and also how to deal with rejection, then This is a good book for you.

The toughest sale is the one we make to ourselves when we go out to face the market. This book helps see our true potential after facing our fears. It is essential if you're serious about being more than just employed at sales. It's for someone who desires maximum success.I now see how facing fear and pushing forward make all the difference in work and in life. Rejection is a fact of life. Live and you will be rejected. Avoid rejection and you have no life. I chose success and the formula in this book is key.

This book is not good. I went through a phase where I read a couple dozen books looking for inspiration and direction in my life. The only thing this book is good for is to fix an uneven table leg

For the cost the book was excellent. Ordered several of them( 5) for our family book club. The only reason I gave it a 3 instead of a 5 is because I have severe allergies, and books were a little smelly based on the age. But for one penny, come on, you can't beat it.

I do personal life coaching and I found this invaluable to help me to overcome some issues, and help others as well to not feel rejected by others which is a waste of time and energy.

This book helped me through a tough personal time. The book, however, is geared more to business. But it still helped me quite a bit.

This book contains an incredible wealth of knowledge and wisdom. It has helped me to understand myself better and I've kept the lessons I learned with me since I read it about a year ago. It's definitely worth reading.

It was okay. Nothing particularly earth shattering. It was a very simple read. If you need to handle rejection in your business, I would suggest it.

The problem with "complete" guides is that they aren't. The first console I looked up in this book, which is sitting not far from where I type this, is not in the book. But a couple of others are. It does have a large number of consoles and if you're trying to identify something or get a year of manufacture, you're likely to find it here.The problem with price guides is that they quickly become obsolete. I'm writing this in 2017 and the book is 17 years old; the prices only give you a relative idea of what consoles may be worth. Other than that, there's precious little info--the number of receiving bands and a tube count is typically it.Images are all in B&W and a bit murky. They're good enough to make out decent details, but not enough if you have similar consoles with small differences.

Book is in excellent condition and provides good pictures of many radios made in the U.S.A.. A good reference book for radio collectors, too. For example: Many of the listed radios, that are presently available, may have the wrong knobs. The books radios show the correct knobs. Nice.

This book presents an excellent overview of console radios through the 1942 period. The B&W photos were likely taken from manufacturer's brochures, but as llustrative as they are, too many are small and "muddy". Radio details are hard to define. The book seems geared primarily to the high-end collector as illustrations of the more collectible radios are much more clearly rendered. Note that (a) not all models of every console ever manufactured are included, and (b) some of the smaller players in the early market are missing. Lastly, because the book was printed in 2000, the value estimates are out of date. They do, however, give a good indication of the general value relationship between models. As a solid basic presentaion of radio consoles built up to WWII, the book is excellent overall.

Nothing to see here. I know it's just a price guide, but I have 5 console radios ( not at all out of the mainstream) and none were listed.Keep your money.

Excellent book for the old radio buff that needs to ID manufacturer's model and chassis numbers. Hard to find source of info on pre-war console radios.

If collecting old tube radios is an interest, this is a nice resource book that will point you to the gems that have value. Carry it with you to the flea markets and when you spot a potential piece of gold ... look it up! If it isn't in here, then you might go on to the next one ....

I've never worked with this version of SQL before and needed to learn basic and mid-level query skills quickly due to change in a project's structure. This helped me get quickly up-to-speed and pulled in a few comments of praise from my boss for my ability to learn something so quickly. Project is back on track and we main even bring it to completion a little earlier than proposed.NOTE: This is not going to make you a T-SQL expert. It's basic and rather simplistic which is what I needed to counter a crisis. I will be purchasing a more advanced book later.

I've been quite happy with this book. I've been learning SQL basically through experimentation and Google Searches. This book does a very nice job of guiding the user along. It is very easy to follow. The book will serve as a handy reference I'm sure.

Forta's book is perfect for my needs: it is organized logically; each lesson is laid out logically; the examples were meaningful; and all the notes and cautions were great.Forta's style is very clear and succinct. I've read many of his other books on ColdFusion and he demonstrates the same knowledge understanding here as he did with those books.The "in 10 Minutes" format was also great for my level of knowledge. You get a level of satisfaction as you complete each small lesson and as you progress, you feel you are mastering the subject. I finally understand what cursors are and how to use them.I'll be next reviewing a T-SQL text that goes even deeper into the language. With the background gained from Forta's book, I think this process should be rather effortless!I highly recommend this book and any others by this author.

Honing what I learned in this book helped me switch careers. Out of a dead end job and doing something I really enjoy now with a much higher wage ceiling.

In "Rapid Development," a 600-ish page treatise on software project management by the same author, Steve McConnell claims that "a book half this size would be overly general to the point of uselessness." One year later, he wrote this book, which clocks in at slightly less than half the length of Rapid Development. Coincidentally, it is overly general to the point of uselessness.There's nothing inherently wrong with this book. It's just a mad-cap race to summarize the material already available in Rapid Development into a smaller, more streamlined, significantly less useful package. If you're going to read one book on software project management, it probably shouldn't be this one. And if you've already read a book on the topic, you won't learn anything new here.

I'm a one-man database development shop at a nonprofit with a shoestring budget. Without the benefit of senior level programmers, I've had to learn most of my software engineering lessons the hard way- by experience.I picked up this book seven years into the job, which in retrospect was about seven years too late. In some respects, this book repeats lessons that that have already become obvious through experience (e.g., software testing needs to be performed separately from development). But, this lends credibility to my judgment, and provides new insights substantiated by software engineering research studies. Non-technical management and funders are responsive to the hard figures I often find myself citing from this book. For example:1) Programmers are 2.5 times more productive in a quiet office vs. a cubicle- so, I need to be allowed to work from home2) The most efficient programmers are 10 times more productive than the least efficient programmers- really, you would think this would be obvious, but when work needs to be contracted, the low bidder is not necessarily the best choice over the long haulCurrently faced with my most substantial and challenging programming project yet, I'm essentially using this book as a cookbook to process. Upfront I was a bit overwhelmed with the scope of the project. Having finished the book, I have a well-defined process in place, am confident this will get done, and feel I am much more articulate describing the stages of software development to management and contracted vendors. Some presumably industry-standard strategies are proving invaluable- implementing a Top Ten Risk list to ensure that major barriers are addressed upfront rather than deferred, creating specific milestones, etc.This book (or an equivalent) should absolutely be mandatory for anyone about to take on their first major software project. It is most useful because it reads like a cookbook- guiding you through all the phases of software development, one after the other.

This book is a strong theoretical background every software project manager should understand. The author provides deep analysis why such a big number of software projects fail. The author offers a set of reality-testing tools (software project survival test) that helps to understand chances of a project to success or to fail, from the very beginning.An intriguing idea is that "software project need hierarchy" is essentially the same as Maslow's "human need hierarchy": human beings respond to a hierarchy of needs that involve a natural progression from lower motives to higher ones. Lower motives such as food, air and water must be satisfied before we can be motivated by the need for belongingness, love, self-esteem or self-actualization. Similar hierarchy of needs applies to software projects.The author clearly shows that the outcome of any project depends equally on both the customer and the project team, and on the way of their communication and cooperation.Showing the power of process and distinguishing "process" from "thrashing" and "productive work", the author doesn't decline that the people are always important.Another cunning idea presented by the author is "The Cone of Uncertainty" which means "early in the project you can have firm cost and schedule target, or a firm feature set, but not both".While by no doubt the first part of the book "The Survival Mind-Set" is an excellent theoretic inspection, the remaining, practical parts of the book are questionable. I'd recommend you to take them skeptically, and, before taking decisive action, getting the full picture by reading "Agile Software Development" by Alistair Cockburn to get the overview of the modern methodologies, "Extreme Programming Explained" by Kent Beck as an example of such methodoloty, "Peopleware" by Tom Demarco & Timothy Lister to make sure that the good workplace and the jelled team is a major factor, "Quality is Free" by Philip B. Crosby to understand what really the quality is and "Leadership Without Easy Answers" by Ronald A. Heifetz to assure that nothing will succeed without a leader.

As a non-technical business executive tasked with running a tech-heavy organization, I had to get up to speed quickly on best practices, methodologies and approaches to development. Our organization develops the bulk of our software internally, and the Engineering team represents nearly half of the company's expense spend. McConnell's book proved invaluable in providing checklists, ideas, best practices and a solid overview of the development process. This series just keeps getting better and better! This book is hot, hot, hot as only scary, angry dom Mark can be. The BDSM scenes are fantastic, but it's also the chemistry and the banter between the MCs that really bring this series to exciting, titillating, addicting life. The plot thickens with Jen's father and why he is after Mark. It also seems that Jen may not have been in on the scam when first ending up at the pony farm, but I'm sure that all will be revealed in future books. I am looking forward to figuring out how Mistress K and Radclife and Jennifer all fit into this plot to take down Mark and I'm dying to know why they (K, Radclife and Kyle) hate him (Mark) so much that they want him dead. Great plot, steamy beyond words and all I have to say is "Next book, please!!!"

She can't sign them because her father has threatened her with dire consequences if she does.Her husband is fighting his urge to keep her. He has second thoughts because she was made for him. They fit each other. BDSM version of the Perils of Pauline.Honestly I'm surprised she's got more than 9 lives. Yes it's a stretch to think a character can tolerate even one of the scenes. This is a totally fan-tassy book, very entertaining and the author is extremely creative, colorful, and I can't fault it for anything. I'm looking forward to the next volume.

This being a new to me author, it quickly became apparent to me that this was not the beginning of the story. But I persevered. There was enough background provided that I didn't feel lost. However, I did find myself being a bit disturbed. This went beyond "dark erotica" to . . . Torture? Abuse? I could almost deal with that since it appeared Mark and Jen might actually start communicating, then - surprise. End of book. What ever happened to having the beginning and end all in the same book? Disappointing.

This is a beautifully written story and it it's definitely a page turner. CP has you on the edge of your seat. You're going to crave more of it. You are going to LOVE and HATE Mark (well I love Mark and I'm not sharing) ;) I don't want to tell you too much but take a chance on this story it's fantastic

Mandaraâ€™s active imagination and tantalizing descriptions make it even more compelling to read the book in one sitting.

I now have many MONTHS to wait for some results and still more time after the Velvet Caress to get to a proper ending.To be fair, The Velvet Chair was excellent if you don't mind a cliffy.I mind!

I wasn't sure if such a dark book would catch my attention but Jennifer and Mark grabbed my heart as they are forced to marry by Jennifer's father, a character I'd like to 1. learn more about & 2. wring his spoiled neck. Mark is blackmailed into marrying Jennifer due to his past misdeeds & Jennifer has been trained to obey from childhood. Jennifer learning to trust Mark & the BDSM party at the end of the book are uplifting, but the book leaves you on a BIG cliffhanger. I can't wait for the next book to come out to see what happens.

Not the best IELTS practice test book available which surpised me as Dr Lin Lougheed is renowned for his knowledge of proficiency tests.The instructions for YES/NO/NOT GIVEN were exactly the same as TRUE/FALSE/NOT GIVEN which implied they were the same type of question, which in fact they are not. TRUE/FALSE/NOT GIVEN focus on facts and information, whereas YES/NO/NOT GIVEN focus on views/opinions of the writer. Some of the strategies to successfully answer this question type are transferable, but not all of them as the test taker needs to focus on opinion/view, not facts and information. I have been led to believe that future editions will rectify this error.Another major flaw in the practice tests is in the listening section - section 4. All lectures are divided into two parts allowing students/candidates to look at questions (e.g. 36-40). Breaks in the middle of the final section has not been part of an IELTS test for many years. The purpose of section 4 is see if the student is able to listen and comprehend a short lecture accurately.Finally, Section 3 questions are extremely easy. Student have little difficulty answering all the questions correctly at very few synonyms and/or parallel ideas are used. In additions, many of the answers are blantly obvious when listening to the text. From Section 3 onwards, should be more subtle requiring students to listen carefully.The only good aspect of this book is to build confidence and/or introducing new strategies for various question types.

I never realized the struggles many have gone through in search of a better life. Never realized the difficult, no horrendous, situations they came from. This book is an eye opener and one that will stay with me for a long time! I worked beside many that came from Mexico to work in the cherry orchards. I saw them going to their trucks or empty huts at the end of the day as I went home to comfort. I never gave it a thought about what their lives were like. I was picking cherries for school clothes. They we picking for survival! What a different outlook I have now! My heart goes out to those who are struggling for survival each and every day.

This spring, I've read the texts from my friend's Albion College course on the Mexican-American Immigrant Experience. I just finished the last book, The Distance Between Us, by Reyna Grande. Grande's memoir of her childhood is powerful: her Mexican parents came (illegally) to "El Otro Lado" (The Other Side), Los Angeles, to find work, and left her and her siblings with their abusive grandmother. Later, Reyna and siblings ran across the border to join their father, and started school here, not knowing a word of English. (Reyna was the first of her family to graduate from college.) This book is painful, powerful, well-written -- difficult to read at times, but I couldn't put it down. Especially at this time of "Build The Wall", this book needs to be read. Strongly recommend!

I thought I had lived a portion of my childhood in poverty, but when I read this wonderfully written memoir, I saw that poverty in the US cannot be compared to poverty in Mexico! This true story reflects Reyna Grande's struggle with abandonment, "for the greater good," dysfunctional parents, and her deep love for both of her homes, the first in Mexico, and then her new home in the United States where, thanks to the Reagan amnesty program, she embraced citizenship and opportunity.This child, then woman, writes with love for some who would be unlovable for most of us and with a positive view of what would seem ugly and unbearable to most. I love her though I'll probably never have the privilege to meet her.Besides Reyna's wonderful, well-written story, it was fun to practico mi limited, EspaÃ±ol, more aptly, as you can read in this sentence, Spanglish. Reyna punctuates portions of her English with it, and mostly explains each Spanish word as she goes.I loved this book and would recommend it to fiction and non-fiction lovers alike.

One of the few books that I have ever felt such a deep connection to. Reyna describes her struggles between coming to the U.S. or staying in stricken poverty back in Mexico. This book tells of the deeply rooted reasons why so many make the dangerous trip to a place where possibilities are endless. As a first generation Latin@, I think back to the struggles and abuse my own mother dealt with both in Mexico and her in the United States. I am here because of her sacrifices and cherish her that much more. Even though my mother has kept many stories from us, we have known enough of her history through pictures of abuse and struggle. I thank Reyna for being able to put into words experiences of what I can only imagine my mother went through. Everyone MUST read this book. It is real life and many don't realize the struggle that others have just across the border from us.

I will admit, I did not read any reviews prior to purchasing this book. Actually, I only read a few sentences of the summary before deciding to purchase it. This book is very well written, Grande is a wonderful author and I am excited to read more from her. Definitely reccommend, not only to other Mexican Americans or Latinos but to anyone who is willing to open up their ears and hearts to the struggles of those coming to the U.S. in search for a better future. Her story is like many others, I hope this book is read by many who are blind to the reality of what the American Dream is for Mexican Immigrants. We don't come to this country to take, we come to give and to belong.(Spoiler Alert) I had no idea her journey would lead her from her small town in Mexico to LA then to Santa Cruz, CA. I was so happy to read that her destiny lead her to life 15 minutes from my home town and her sister Betty would end up in Watsonville, CA which is my hometown in the USA.My parents, like hers, came from a very poor area of Mexico, they left in search for a better future to offer their future children. My siblings were taken back to my parent's hometown after the Loma Prieta Earthquake in 1989. They too had to live with grandparents and feel like orphans for almost a year. Her story brought tears to my eyes time and time again.

This is the story of a girl who escaped dire poverty in Mexico, and achieved success on"the Other Side" - el Otro Lado. But there was a high cost to pay, not only by herself, but by her parents and siblings, the breaking up of their family. In fact, she states in her book that this is not uncommon, that the usual emigration involves leaving close members of the family behind. And these journeys don't always have a successful outcome, they may end in a worse ghetto, the price may be too high, the loss of family, religion, community, culture, pride. Interesting, this is the process most immigrants to the U.S. go through, but the difference is that we are neighbors. At any rate, she describes her life in graphic detail, getting in to the nitty gritty, giving us insight into her experience.

A very moving story revealing the tragedy and triumph of coming to America from Mexico and succeeding. Anyone who has thought about building a wall to keep immigrants out of the US, needs to read this book. Ms. Grande writes about her experiences of and her triumph over abuse, neglect and abandonment. She tells her life story in a clear and efficient manner without rhetoric. She is so efficient in her storytelling that it belies the extent of the pain and anguish she and her beloved sisters and brother must have endured. I felt like she was trying to protect the reader from the true horror of her experience.

What you get here are a number of framing-ready prints, large enough to make beautiful wall art additions to any room. We have a distinct neo-Victorian look going on in our home, and five of these --placed into appropriate frames--have made spectacular additions to our large paneled library room. Several people have asked where they; could obtain the sunflower drawing (featured on the cover and appearing in the book) for their own collections. I told a select few what this really was.....and each person was shocked that a mere cutting from a book could look so glorious as wall art! I had been searching for this book for some time and was delighted to get it, at a most reasonable price, here on Amazing Amazon!

I wanted to like this book.I mean it seemed perfect for affordable botanical art.BUT,the images are crowded with 2,3 some times 6 images on one page.So, while I will probably use the sunflower and maybe the tulips (one page 3together)for decoupage.No.

I have these framed in our bedroom. I have given half a dozen to my niece and another six to my son and his wife. I ordered a SECOND book because I plan on using them in our master bath. I LOVE looking at them! I also have the complete works in book formâ€¦but I cannot bear to tear out pages. Although the selection is limited, the colors are vivid, the prints are clear, and the paper is heavy card stock.

I absolutely loved these Botanical Prints. Not only were they beautiful but the large size and good quality paper made these prints perfect to put all over my apartment without the use of expensive frames. They made my kitchen and bedroom feel very homey and warm. Anyone wanting to experience a paper garden within your home without a huge price tag, look no further! Great value, great price!

I was so excited for this book to come out. I have waited over a year for Revealed and I must say, that was a big waste of my time. I loved this series in the beginning and now it is just dragging on. It hard for me to grasp that some of these books are only taking a couple of days for all these events to happen. I feel like nothing really happened in this book. Yeah Zoey does something wrong and is freaking out about boys. I understand that she is supposed to only be 17, but seriously? She has bigger problems than boys, say a crazy immortal that wants her dead?I really hope the next book is the last one. I don't even really want to read the next one, but I want to finish this series. Usually when a series ends, I am so disappointmented because I want more of the story. Not with this series anymore. I just want it to hurry up and end.I just feel like there could've been more to happen in this book or have more problems been fixed. We didn't even get to hear from Erik at all and it seemed Damien was prefectly happy. I'm sorry, but didn't his love interest JUST die like maybe a week ago from the story line? I feel like I might just be ranting on this story, but it was NOWHERE near as good as it could be considering it took a full year to get published. I think I will just stick with my indie writers for now because this book was seriously crap compared to what the Casts have put out in the past.

I started this series on recommendation from a stranger and her daughter in a book store. I have not been able to set the books down from start to finish. I watch my tracking numbers until the book arrives at my door step.This has been my favorite book so far. I am still reading my way through the House of Night Series but everyday featured in the book is an adventure for Zoey and her "Nerd Herd". I just cannot wait to see what happens next.With Nyx above, Thonatos in the House of Night with Kalona, Aphrodite's visions, and other friends gifts the "Nerd Herd" might make it through. Thankfully there is always help somewhere and sometimes where Zoey and friends least expect it.

As usual, I won't disclose a lot of details about the book in my review. I really believe it can ruin it for other readers. With that said:I have not seen any other reviews until I came here to put mine in. And WOW, it seems I am not the only one disappointed in this one! Even though you have your usual characters doing the usual thing: Fighting evil and trying not to kill each other in the same breathe. You also have a few "little" (and I mean that LITERALLY) things change up in the story. However, most of what happens in this one, you can pretty much guess what is going to happen next.The best way to describe how this book was put together is this: It seems like the Cast ladies took a couple of chapters from the House of Night series to come and made a whole book out of it. When things actually start to happen, it's the end of the book. Everything before this is just......blah.I am seriously disappointed in this one. The story is still good and you do have a couple of areas where you start to learn a little bit of what is to come. Hopefully when "it" does come, it will be an actual book and not a couple of chapters to make a book.As for recommending it.....I am on the fence with that. Do you need to read it to know what is going on? Maybe "2" things in this whole book are suggestive in what's coming in the next book(s). If you are a House of Night die hard fan, then have at it. If you have read all the others and want to keep going with them, then have at it. If you think you can pick up the next book without reading this one and not be lost, I may have to agree with that. I still am looking forward to the next installment. Hopefully it will be more than a few chapters spread out.

I have very few complaints about this book except that I truly wish it was lengthier. I don't understand why everyone is complaining about the "teenage drama" that seems to "run rampant" in this book; did any of you happen to notice that this is blatantly labeled as a "Young Adult Fiction".... About teenage vampires... In a school?In any case, the themes I personally enjoyed about this book were much more intricate than this "teenage drama" label being thrown around. Questioning morality, battling against dark desires, & coming of age are all apparent themes but none should be taken so lightly & slapped with such a lame term.! It's not like these themes suddenly become irrelevant when we leave our teen years behind.As always, I enjoyed the writing style of the Cast mother-daughter duo though I still find myself wishing for a much steady adult tone in more of the teenaged characters dialogue, however, I understand that it is done so purposefully to accentuate youth & inexperience. It does still lose my interest from time to time but I am a full grown, adult woman so I guess teenaged prattle should be uninteresting to me... Duh.My hope for the next installment is that it will finally have the serious tone that I believe this series is deserving of along with greater length & detail. That is all. I would recommend that any House of Night lover not be deterred by the rude remarks of those that expect more from a series with such a blatant label.

I have read most of the books in the House of Night series so I decided to order this one and another that I was missing to complete it. After reading the reviews for this book I am now a little nervous to get to it as I am re-reading all of the books in the series before starting the new ones. This is my third time through and it is getting a little tedious to read because the writers do a LOT of recap in each book which I suppose is helpful if you are just wanting to read one without reading them all but gets really annoying after awhile. I hope that I feel differently when I get to this book and read it but from what I have read of the others who love the series and read/reviewed this book I am not looking forward to it as much as I was. I will update this when I finally get to reading it!
