Recover a throw pillow in 15 minutes (or less!)

Hi friends! I have been in super crazy busy woman project mode this week! I haven't had too many super exciting things to post because everything ~~isn't quite done~~ is definitely making wonderful progress! I have been super busy filling orders for my etsy shop and therefore making a bunch of pillows! I also made my boys a red chevron pillow for their bed that I'm a little in love with! :) Anyway, I posted this when I first started blogging but wanted to share it again for those that are new around here.

Maybe this is a super simple project (if you can sew) but when I was first learning to sew and make pillows, I didn't know how to recover a throw easily. I wanted a pillow cover I could remove and wash if necessary, I do live with 3 boys ya know!

Here's how I did it....

You will need:

A pillow to recover

Fabric (I used approx. 3/4 yard for a 19x19" pillow)

A sewing machine and coordinating thread

Scissors

Measuring Tape

Pins

1st - Measure your pillow. Mine was a 19x19" square

2nd - Cut your fabric into three pieces. I cut one 19x19" for the front, and two 14x19" for the back.

3rd - You will do a 1/4" - 1/2" hem on ONE of the 19" sides of the 14x19" fabric pieces (the two smaller pieces-your measurements will most likely be different.)

Your three pieces should now look like this...

4th - You will put the pillow together. You will put the right side (print side) facing in, imagine the pillow cover turned inside out.

5th - Pin the three pieces in place

TIP: If you pin it like shown in the photo, you can sew right over the pins. Something I didn't know when I started sewing. :)

See...

6th - Sew around the edges of the pillow cover. I usually round the corners to avoid them looking "dog earred" when the pillow form is inside of it. Rounding them helps them to stay perked up over time.

FINALLY, turn your pillow cover inside out and put a fluffy pillow inside!

That's it! So easy! Even for beginners!

Quick and Easy felt Valentine's Day wreath

Are you bored of my Valentine's posts yet? Well this is the last one I promise! ....I think so anyway ;) I love the variations of felt wreaths I've seen but I wanted to make mine a tad differently so hear it is!

Take some thick cardboard and draw a heart onto it then cut your heart out. I folded it in half and cut the center out as well. Then I took Krylon's dual and spray painted it red so none of the cardboard showed through.

Then, I made a bunch of hot pink and red felt circles.

Next, I folded them in half, then in half again, snipped off the bottom and put a big dab of hot glue on it.

I alternated red and pink and made sure they weren't all going the same direction. I didn't really want a uniform look... Once I filled my cardboard heart... voila!

I pretty much love it on my front door with the snowy landscape! So far it has held up well to the cold temperatures and the snow. :)

HOLY OBSESSED! I love every single inch of it! I kind of wish it was my house...well, I REALLY wish it was my house!!

My Valentine's Mantel and Valentine's Decor Ideas

Hi friends! Hope you had a fabulous weekend! I sure did! I wanted to show you all my progress on my valentine's decor! I posted a picture of this on my Instagram and couldn't believe the sweet comments! Just about everything on the shelf was a DIY craft project.

I took a 2'x2' piece of plywood from the basement and gave it a good coat of white paint. Then I traced the chevron pattern on the wood and hand painted the pink stripes. My sweet hubby helped me paint the stripes so it went pretty quickly; then, I just hung my thrift store wreath right up there.

I made these Valentine's topiary trees using party streamers! You can see that post here.

Our spring banner and Savannah's Valentine's banner (which she'll show you later!) were my inspiration for my "Be Mine" banner. I'm not gonna lie, I LOVE IT SO MUCH!

I used my great grandmother's pair of her broken vintage earrings on each end of the banner giving it some sentimental value.

I combined all of my favorite fabrics and trims to come up with a feminine and unique banner! You can't go wrong combining chevron, burlap, lace, ruffles, glitter, rhinestones, pearls, yarn, webbing and doilies! Seriously all of my favorite things!

I made the glittered letters from cardstock on my Silhouette and used modpodge and glitter to bling them out! Super cute, easy and cheap!

The owl was from Marshall's (a gift from my sweet friend, Kate!) and the glittery heart was from Michael's using a coupon. PS. Did you know Michael's and Joann's fabrics both have apps for your smartphone so you can use coupons without printing them?? BEST idea ever.

DIY Valentine's Topiary Trees Tutorial

Hi friends! Sorry I've been such a slacker this week! I missed Totally Inspired Tuesday and everything. My schedule (and this snow!!!!) has been crazy! I'm so glad to have a fun-filled weekend headed my way! Actually, I just got back from Disney On Ice so my weekend has kind of already begun! :) SO fun btw!

I want to share with you these topiary trees I made for my Valentine's Mantel. I cannot WAIT to show you the whole thing. I finished it today and I'm in LOVE! What's Valentine's day without some LOVE anyway!? ;)

Here we go!

1. First, get a 6" styrofoam ball and a wooden dowel. Shove that dowel into the styrofoam carefully not to go all the way through. Then let your kids sword fight with their friends... ha!

2. Then take your pot (I used a cheapo clay pot from wal-mart. It was around $1) then fill it with florist's foam blocks and wedge them in your pot nice and tight. This doesn't have to be tidy... no one will see it when you're done!

3. Next, make a zillion rosettes using streamers (crepe paper). Got mine at Hobby Lobby, then ran out and the hubs picked some up for me at the Dollar Tree. Worked great so hit up the $1 store!

Cut about a yard of paper, fold it in half (hot dog style - hehe!) and start rolling and rolling.... then glue your rosette to your ball using hot glue.

4. Repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat....

5. Finally, I added pearls to the centers using hot glue and painted the dowel with brown and tan craft paint. Add some moss in your pot to cover the foam and viola! DONE! I made two for my mantel.

Printable Organizing tags - Free printable and how to customize them!

I recently received some questions from a reader on how to add text to the printable instead of just writing on the tags which is for sure an option but I definitely don't have the cutest handwriting so I wanted to share a way to add text digitally. I found a super easy, super cute way to do this using picnik!

First, you will want to save the tags printable to your computer.

To save this document, right click and click "Save image as" and choose a name and location to save your document somewhere that is easy to remember so you can upload it into picnik.

Then, Head on over to picnik and upload your "Tags Printable" from wherever you saved it.

Click "Open".

Your screen should look like this once your document is uploaded.

Use the "Rotate" tool to make your entire document rotate clockwise so it looks like this.

Make sure your in the "edit" tab (1.) and click on "text" (2.) then type in whatever you want your tag label to say and click "add" (3.)

Use the tools to adjust the size, font, color, etc to your liking.

Repeat until you have the text you want on all of your tags.

When your tags look good, click "Save Photo" and save it to your computer!

Then, you're done! Print your document on white cardstock (textured cardstock works best!) and cut out your tags on the red line.

We added a little distressing ink and a ribbon to tie the tag to the basket! I love how the tags make the room look so tidy and organized! Not to mention, everyone knows where to find everything and more importantly, where it goes when you're done!

Tutorial for DIY Stripe Curtains Using Freezer Paper!

I wanted to do try my hand at Painted Striped Curtains! I needed to do 6 panels in total so Measuring out every single curtain seemed like it would take FOREVER! After talking to Mallory about she came up with a great idea... use FREEZER PAPER!

BEST IDEA EVER!

To start this project here is what you will need:

I got THESE 98 inch curtains from Ikea (I love them because they are heavy weight and cheap!)

Latex Paint ( I used about a 1/4 of a gallon for 4 panels)
Textile Medium (I used a 8oz bottle for 4 panels, you can get it at any craft store by the acrylic paint.)

Paint roller (don't use the foam roller, because it does not have great coverage)
Freezer Paper
Tape Measure
Iron
Scissors

1. You are going to want to first cut the freezer paper. Lay out your curtain and lay your freezer paper over the curtain to get the length right. Make sure you go a little longer then the curtain so when you iron on the freezer paper on the whole stripe of the curtain is covered!

After you cut 3 sheets of freezer paper, you will want to fold a sheet in half then cut where your fold is.

Now you should have six 9-inch strips.

2. Now its time to Iron! I set my iron to the cotton setting.

(These measurements are for a 98 inch curtain)

Start at the top of the curtain,

Lay out the first strip and then iron on.

Measure 9 inches then start the next strip.

Repeat the process until you get to the bottom of the curtain.

3. After all the freezer paper strips are ironed on you are ready for paint!

Note: The paint will soak through the curtain so put paper down before you paint.

4. I added a little bit of textile medium to soften up the latex paint.

The painted stripes were a little stiff but it feels more like outdoor fabric. It was a lot softer then I thought it would be.

5. Start to paint!

At first I was using a brush for the edges and then the roller for inside of the stripes, but that took a while. Then, I used a roller for the whole stripe and it cut the time in half. I ended up being able to paint a stripe in about 4 minutes. Make sure you do a good coat of paint. (I had to repaint my first curtain because there were white patches where the paint did not cover well.)

Peel up the freezer paper before the paint dries!

FINISHED!

I am beyond happy with the outcome!

These black and white curtains are for my sister Scarlett! I will be showing you my curtains soon!

I choose a fun color for my stripes to match my new pillows!

So it's a new year and a fresh start! I know a lot of people have organization on their mind as the new year begins. I know I do. Savannah too! We have talked about this very thing. I'm a good organizer when I actually do it. I am pretty organized but I get overwhelmed VERY easily. If I'm tired or hungry (lol!) things are 100x harder for me! Seriously. It makes me cranky and overwhelmed.

I decided I needed to start somewhere and take one step at a time. If my home is organized, that will transfer to organization in other aspects of my life. I LOVE BEING ORGANIZED but we all know, it can be tough to STAY organized!

I'm starting this week with a cleaning schedule. I found a bunch of great ideas on my "Clean up, Clean up, Everybody do your share" pinterest board. Quite the name I know! hehe! Check it out! You can also !

The BEST projects of 2011

It's 2012!!! Can you believe it!? We wanted to share some of our favorite projects from this year! 2011 was great but I think 2012 is my year! 12 is my lucky number after all! ;)

January: We started 2011 out with a bang with Savannah's little girl's playroom!

February: Lots of love going on with the sheet music meaningful wings! What a great Valentine's gift this was!

Savannah also gave her laundry room a little makeover by building her own platforms for her washer and dryer and adding stripes to the walls!

March held one of our favorite furniture makeovers of all time.

April was busy busy for the both of us! We completely overhauled the wonderful Elizabeth Banks' pantry as she remodelled her whole house!

Happy New Year and the 2012 Color of the Year!

It's 2012! Can you believe it!? 12 is my lucky number so I'm super pumped about this year! ...aside from the whole world supposed to end thing. That might cramp my style... I have big plans for this year! We hope you have a fantastic year!

A new year means new beginnings. When I was in Arizona, Savannah and I talked a lot about New Year's resolutions and a lot of them came down to being more organized and structured! That means we need to make some changes! There are so many thing I need to get organized in my life to make it easier on myself! We hope to share some organizing tips and tricks that work for us throughout the year!

Oh yeah, the 2012 Color of the year is Tangerine Tango! What a pretty corally orange! I'm loving it!

WOWZA! I'm not typically an orange girl but man, oh man, these inspiration photos may change me! LOVING every one of them!

DIY Upholstered Tufted Headboard Tutorial

While I was in Arizona, Savannah and I tackled a few projects! Of course! It's pretty much our favorite thing to do when we are together! That and going out for sushi ;) One project we really wanted to get done was her youngest daughter's bed. Her (almost) two year old little angel was done with her baby crib and needed a big girl bed! Savannah knew exactly what she wanted but she was a little nervous to tackle it herself. It was definitely a two person job but turned out to be a really fun project!

Savannah had an adorable twin bed that she found at a local thrift store for a steal. Most people would look at it and think... "great lines, cute bed, I'll paint it and it'll be fantastic!" well... that would be true BUT Savannah wanted to take it one step further! She wanted a white girly bed with a soft lime green upholstery and some killer cute colorful buttons! Not a tall order or anything.. ;)

First, we made a template of where we wanted the upholstery. We used butcher paper and taped it to the bed frame.

Then we measured and marked where we wanted the tufts and buttons to be.

Next, we drew straight lines from each point to get an idea of where the folds in the tufts would be.

Next, we removed the template from the headboard and I traced and marked the foam while Savannah painted the headboard a gorgeous creamy white!

I laid the butcher paper template on the foam (we used 2" upholstery foam from the fabric store) and traced in with a sharpie. (Yes, a purple one!)

Then, we cut around the traced edge of the foam using a serrated knife. We also poked holes in the tuft markings. (didn't get a pic of this step! Sorry!)

Next, we re-taped the template to the bed, after the paint dried. Then, we drilled holes in the headboard using the template tuft markings as a guide.

Then, we made 17 fabric covered buttons for the tufting. They were so stinkin' cute! Totally worth the sore thumbs! You can get these button kits at a fabric store. We got hers at JoAnn's Fabrics.

Next, the upholstering began! We used spray adhesive to attach the 2" foam piece to the headboard. Then we stapled a large piece of batting over the foam. We used a staple gun for the upholstery.

Then, we trimmed the excess batting and we used some clamps to hold the upholstery fabric in place so we could begin the tufting process.

TIP: Do you tufting before you staple. If you staple the fabric first, your tufting may look too tight. We wanted nice deep tufts so we did not want to pull the fabric tight until the very end!

We used a long upholstery needle and upholstery thread. Start from the back fo the headboard and feed your needle through to the front, through the fabric. Attach the button and run the needle back through to the back of the headboard and staple the remaining thread securely to the back. Make sure to pull the needle really tight to get really deep tufts!

The back should look like this when you're done with this step.

Next, we stapled the fabric to the headboard and trimmed the excess.

Lookin' good! But we've got one more important step! Piping!

Finally, we started making our own piping so it would match the green fabric. We already knew how to make piping but if you need help, here is a great tutorial. Click here.

Then, hot glue your piping around the raw edges and TA-DA!!! DONE!

We were so excited to tackle a project together since we haven't been able to do that in about 6 months! BAH! Sad huh!? It couldn't have turned out any better! We are a team and our team work always pays off! We both are in love with little Millie's bed! Savannah is working her tail off to get the rest of Millie's nursery turned into her big girl room!

Savannah even sewed her little girl's bedding using an unheard of technique! I'm so anxious for her to post it! Ya'll are going to love it! She is also making some adorable pillows to match the buttons for Millie's bed!

Hope everyone had a great Christmas we sure did!

I loved that Mallory was here, honestly one the best surprises ever!

Now that Christmas is over I am ready to tackle a few projects that have been on my mind.

First thing is first, its time to change up my little office space.

My Inspiration is the stripe curtains that are everywhere right now.

I just love how dramatic the curtains are!

I am wanting to paint them, but acrylic paint is to expensive so I want to use latex paint. But I don't want them to be crunchy.. My question to all of you is.... can I use texture medium in latex paint?

I made it home. Bittersweet. I could not wait to be back in my bed, house and comfort zone and I missed my sweet hubby like CRAZY but it was so so sad to leave Arizona where my friends and family are. Especially days before Christmas.

My little family has some fun things planned for the week to celebrate this wonderful season of Christmas. I'm so happy to have my husband, school free, for a week and a half! BEST Christmas present ever. I love that man.

Anyways, I came across this photo and I'm in love with the idea of the glossy stencil!

What do you think about a high gloss stencil on the grey wall? I can't wait! I got a new mattress so my bed looks fluffier since this photo. Who doesn't love a big comfy bed!? Have a wonderful wonderful week! Side note: It's officially winter now and I'm ready for snow!
