Come say Hi next Monday, the 30th, at 12:00pm PST on DeviantArt.

I'll be creating a chat room on DeviantArt where we can chat about all sorts of things. I will update this post on Monday, 5 minutes before noon to provide a link to the chat room. I plan of being available for a few hours or so, depending on the amount of people that join.

We can talk about lots of things. It will be fun:

Art Topics

Portfolio Tips

The Video Game Industry

Questions or Help

Just to Say Hi

Fashion and Beauty

Health Tips

Or Anything

Talk to you soon!

Sad Vader is Going to a New Home Soon

So it's the end of an era for Vader and me. Yes, Vader. That's the name of my beloved custom built PC that I've had since 2005. I'm not one to buy a ton of stuff, but recently I was given a computer that's better than the one I had. This is great news as far as YouTube is considered because it will help me produce videos faster.

One reason is that I can recorder longer using CamStudio. I didn't have a lot of RAM so the recording would sometimes crash and I would lose all of my work and have to re-record. This is a big deal, and now I can do longer videos without worrying about this happening. That, and I save time editing clips together in the long run.

Second, is that my render time has decreased significantly. It would take me about 2-3 hours to render a 10 minute HD video with motion blur and other filters. This would add up if I needed to do multiple renders to see or hear how things were coming along. Now it's much better. I can finish faster which will help speed up my pipeline so that I can potentially start doing more videos in less time.

I always feel sad when I start a new chapter in life. I'm a sentimental person. I've had this computer for so long and I've created so much wonderful artwork with it that it's hard to part with. I'm selling it on Craigslist and hope that someone will get more use out of it and Vader can potentially be loved by a new family that perhaps doesn't need a top-of-the-line computer to create artwork like I do. He's a good little machine and I've taken good care of him over the years.

If you live in the San Francisco Bay Area and are interested in purchasing this PC,

So recently, I haven't had a lot of time to play video games but Dungeon Defenders was one that I couldn't put down and would play whenever I got free time in the evenings after work. This game was pure fun and I recommend it to anyone that loves strategy games. It's strategy meets loop whore, which makes for an addicting "just one more round" type of game. But at the same time, being a game that someone can just go a round or two, without committing to like a 4-10 hour run.

Here are some thoughts about the game:

Pros

- It's a cheap impulse buy off of Steam, and the PC version looks the best if you have a good machine.

- The gameplay is awesome and is so much fun to play multiplayer. That's really what makes it.

- I play the Huntress and love her. I built her up to be DPS and she's fast. I enjoyed being the player that could one-shot things, but I'm a glass canon and die a lot.

- There's a gun for the Huntress called "The Incubator" that shoots chickens. Chickens I say! They go cluck-cluck, bounce all over the place, and explode when they hit something. Not the best gun for high levels, but good fun that will be sure to put a smile on your face.

- The 3D art is great. I love the cartoon cell-shaded look. Some of the levels are pretty (nature and glowy stuff) and I enjoy the balance between outdoor and indoor levels. It keeps the game interesting.

- Love the music; it's memorable and entertaining. I only wish they wouldn't have reused some of the tracks on extra levels and instead created more new songs.

- The holiday levels are a great way to keep the community happy by giving free content (this might be Steam only). It gets you in the mood to play. Especially with the tavern being decked out with all the holiday assets. They did a great job making it "feel" festive for Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. I can't wait to see what other holidays they might do.

Cons

- The biggest issue I had with this game was that at the beginning I lost my character because of a bug with the servers. I had to start over after I lost about a days worth of work, and had to contact the developer about this problem. They were nice enough to give me extra gear and mana to level her up again quickly. So it wasn't terrible, just a minor set back. This bug should be fixed by now.

- The 2D art is not up to par with the 3D art. Which is unfortunately, because it would have been really nice if they had the budget/time for it. This mismatched quality gives the game a very indie feel in a bad way.

- Having to pay for every little thing is annoying and that made me stop playing, other than the fact that I had completed almost everything there is to do. DLC has started to become an issue in general because companies are nickel and diming for every little thing. Even the increased level cap had to be purchased through DLC. Lame.

- What is up with the butt cracks in this game? Did the developers think it's funny? The orges didn't cover their cracks nor did the Huntress. It's pretty tasteless and unfortunate that the only playable girl at launch is dressed like that. I don't mind thongs, but cracks? See look, eww: Elf cracks.

Overall I would say Dungeon Defenders is worth the time and money. As long as you have someone to play with. The online community is rather big right now, so if you want to jump on board, now's the time to do it.

Cheers and happy gaming,

I can do 45 push-ups in a row. I'm so happy and I feel strong.

About a month ago I read an article about how a healthy "average" man should be able to do 35 push-ups and a healthy lady should be able to do 45 (girl style) push-ups. I laughed out loud and thought to myself, "I bet I can do five. 45 push-ups is insane!"

Well at that moment I got down on the ground and I barely squeezed out ten of the most pathetic push-ups I could muster. Right then and there I told myself that I would add a few push-ups a day until I was able to do my 45.

After that first day I woke up the next morning so sore. It was definitely the worst day. My pectoral muscles were killing me, but I still managed to do 11 with more ease than the first day. Day after day 11 turned into 15, and then to 20, and then 30, until today I finally did my 45.

So get down on the ground and give me 45! Or 35 if you're a dude. Don't hurt yourself and listen to your body. Build up the strength slowly and let me know when you can do a complete set. Then we can Internet high-five.

Cheers,

Well, I recently got permission to post some of the illustration work that I did for it last year. It's perfect timing as well, because the game's coming out for the iPad this Spring. Oh yes indeed! I know a lot of you were asking about that. So it's finally here.
"Great things are made of little things." - Fortune Cookie

Hello beauties! 2012 is off to a good start and I wanted to do something daring for the first makeup look of the new year. It was New Year's Day and I was in the bathroom getting ready to go out to the movies, when I thought to myself, "Do something artistic today, it's the start of a whole new year." And that's what I did, I grabbed my Jemma Kid liquid liner and went all out. I came up with this modern Rorschach-inspired pattern that reminded me of how the tree leaves are silhouetted in the dark. Recently, I've been taking my walks at night and I'm loving it. I feel alone, but mindful of everything that's happening around me. It's like the night is inviting me to use my senses.

Mind you this brand of liner is brilliant, it's thick, pitch black, smudge proof after it dries, and stays put for... days. No joke, this stuff does not come off easy. I recommend soaking a cotton pad in eye makeup remover or extra virgin olive oil (this is what I use) and press it onto the lids for a minute or two. That's the only way I got it off. So good luck to you if you use it.

The current look is:

J A N U A R Y 2 0 1 2

RealAge.com is something that I have been using for what seems like forever. I signed up about 6 years ago and have been loving it ever since. What is RealAge you might ask? It's a website dedicated to helping people understand how to become healthy in all aspects of life and it has an impressive scientific advisory board that includes Dr. Mehmet Oz, MD (I never knew who he was until he got his TV show).

The website has helped me learn so much over the years that I wanted to share it with you. Especially now that 2012 is here and most people want to improve their lives in some way. RealAge is loaded with useful tools and info that's sure to help you achieve your new year's resolutions. Or at least become more knowledge about the subjects provided.

Reasons to Sign Up:

1. The RealAge Test is fun! This was the thing that made me curious about the website in the first place. The concept is that you have your "calender age" and your "real age." The RealAge is based on your lifestyle, everything from exercise, diet, well-being, stress levels, sex life, sleeping patterns, ancestral family health, etc. So this is appealing because you can see how your lifestyle is affecting your age. I re-take my test at the beginning of each new year and my results were the best they've ever been, coming in at 6.5 years younger than I actually am. That's a new record for me and I owe it mostly to eating right. I ate a more plant-based diet in 2011 and I think my marks are higher because of the improvements I made in the diet category. I definitely feel 6.5 years younger.

2. Learning is easy and fun with RealAge. When you sign up, you can receive a weekly newsletter with all sorts of wonderful health tips. They always fascinated me because I knew that something like diet or exercise might be good for me, but I wanted know know WHY as well. An example would be, I know apples are good for me, but why? Here's an excerpt from RealAge:

"A brilliant prescription for revving up your immunity? Yep, it's just like the old saying: an apple a day. Studies have revealed that pectin, a special kind of fiber found in apples, may help boost levels of immune-supportive proteins. So crunching one a day could very well help keep the doctor away this cold season."

The full article can be found here.

3. The articles are nice to share with friends and family. Sometimes I find that the tips I read are perfect for a loved one. If they are stubborn about changing their ways, perhaps hearing the information from a Doctor is more convincing than hearing it from me. So I can easily send them helpful links. I do this all time for my family. It's tough love.

4. There are plenty of helpful videos, interactive charts, and action plans to help you realize your goals. For example there is a Weight Loss Tracker that can help one stay motivated, set goals, and monitor the progress made.

5. For more serious issues, there are heath tests that one can take to determine if the are having an issue with something and perhaps should consult a doctor. Some include, but are not limited to: ADHD, Allergies, Diabetes, Eye Health, Heart Disease, Headache/Migraine, Joint Age, Menopause, Osteoporosis, Rheumatoid, and Arthritis. Personally, I have not used this feature because I fortunately have been in good health. And I'll do my best to keep it that way.

So there you have it. Pretty spiffy huh?

If you have any questions at all, I'm hear to help. Just let me know in the comments below.

Well, this video motivated me:

Moving Art - Gratitude

It made me reflect upon the fact that every moment is unique and special.

Don't waste your days and be thankful for them.

Best,

Happy 2012 everyone. Mine is off to a good start so far and the end of 2011 was good too. I enjoyed the week that I got to spend with my family for Christmas in CO. We had snow for Christmas and it was nice to hang out and talk to them again. That's my favorite pastime in the whole world, to just sit down with someone and have a good conversation. So it was wonderful to catch up. That, and we played tons of games (Dr. Mario on the NES goes really well with a glass of Merlot), made Christmas cookies (all diet rules went out the window), I got to help decoration the tree with peppermint candy canes (again, I couldn't resist), and we did a little shopping together as well. Even though I didn't purchase anything, I still enjoyed going and being a human clothing rack for my sisters. It's a girl thing I'm sure.

Our Family Tree at Carla's House Asti for Two in Tiffany & Co. Crystal

New Year's Eve was beautiful as well. As much as I love traveling, it's always nice to return home and take it easy for a few days. I enjoyed not doing a damn thing between my return home and New Year's Eve. This time of year always fascinates me because I find that it's a time to get all philosophical and reflect upon the time past and the future to come. Sipping Italian sparkling wine by the warm fireside and just watching the flames dance is a great way to bring in the new year. It was also fun to pull out the resolution list from 2011 and see what things I actually achieved, and it wasn't too bad. Most things I accomplished or made some progress with, which was nice to see. Specifically the first resolution about artwork; I remember writing that about the painting I'm working on now. It's crazy that it took me almost a year to start it, because I was so apprehensive about the hours that I would have to put into it. As for new resolutions, I will just stick with the ones I had for 2011, because they still apply.

Also, sleeping in for the first time in a long while was nice on New Year's Day. Ah, the little things in life! No alarm clock can be a good thing in moderation. The only issue was that I slept 10.5 hours and I know that's no good.Oh well. It felt good none the less. That, and I went to see Mission Impossible on New Year's Day. It was good fun and I recommend it if you like action films.

So it's back to work for me; but I'll return soon. I promise.

Happy 2012!

Long time, no talk. First and foremost I want to wish you all a wonderful holiday. I hope that you get to enjoy your time off and spend it with the ones you love.

I myself will be visiting family and heading back to Colorado for Christmas. I can't wait to see them again and to see the snow. Unfortunately, I haven't had the chance to feel very festive until now because I've been working. The snow will help with that, and the SNL Christmas episode this weekend put me in a good mood.

I'm 43hours into my new artwork, and I still haven't begun to color. That's just the drawing. So I will be MIA until mid to end February trying my hardest to complete this painting. That, and I'm planning two videos for it. First, a step-by-step video; just to show the process (not intended to be a tutorial) and then the second one will be a retrospective were I go back in and talk about the painting and how it came about (which will be more tutorial-like). So that will be fun.

Also, I have a video commission that I'm excited about. I will be creating an intro for a client's YouTube videos. So it's nice to be working with video again, and a good change of pace. That also means that commissions probably won't be open again until the beginning of spring.

Okay then! I best be off, I have to pack and get ready to go. Hurray for travel.

Is anyone going anywhere for the holidays as well?

xoxo,

Well recently the lovely and talented Neha Jain was inspired to create two 3D renders based on the concept. How cool is that! I'm so thrilled to see that she brought the artwork to life in a whole new way.

So go check them out here:

So this winter is extremely different then last year. Coloring blocking is huge this season, so it's more about bright, bold, colorful fashion and less about makeup. This look complements that perfectly. It's a subtle way to wear monochromatic toned makeup (which is still very in), but natural enough to pair with loud colored clothing. Have fun this month; fashion hasn't seen color like this for the winter in quite some time. Typically those are reserved for the warm spring and summer months. Also, gold eyes are great for posh parties. Happy Holidays!

The current look is:

D E C E M B E R 2 0 1 1

Color trends for this month:

Claret, pumpkin, cobalt, cream, and silver

Current motivation for the look:

Color blocking, art, and the holidays

Previous Looks this Year:

It's an idea of mine that's just been tossed aside, purely because of the time. Recently, Lewis Walker, a colleague and friend of mine, encouraged me to face my fear and start working on the painting right away. No more waiting. Thank you Lewis!

So I will not be online in the upcoming weeks because I want to focus on this (I will however check my mail for artwork sales, so no worries about that). When the work's done, I look forward to sharing it with you all.

Lovely Florence and her beautiful voice has put me in a trance this week. Her new album Ceremonials just came out and I adore it. It has inspired me so much and it was just what I was hoping for after her amazing first album Lungs.

Before I got my hands on it, I stumbled across her single "What The Water Gave Me" and I couldn't stop listening to it. She has such a powerful, but sweet voice. Something that she can turn on and off in an instant. That contrast is what's so compelling about her sound. That, and her artistic themes about death, relationships, whimsy, and nature are all so fascinating to me.

I even painted Robert Dean's portrait to that song. He's a talented English fashion stylist that needed work done for the launch of his new website: TheStrangerSpeaks.com. That song was all I wanted to listen to during the entire creation of that painting (I'm excited to show it off when the time is right). I get that way sometimes. The music will just move me, I get into a flow, and don't stop until the art is complete. Surprisingly enough, the direction of that painting had similar themes, so it was too perfect.

If you haven't heard it yet, you have to check it out:

Florence + the Machine - Ceremonials

Cheers,

Wow! Where does the time go? I feel like I'm watching my life pass in fast-forward because I can't believe it's November already. So here's an autumn look that I've been loving and wearing out recently that includes all of the hot trends for the season: Strong brows, cat-eyes, matching makeup colors, and wine-colored lips. So if you're feeling daring, wear this look to a cocktail party. Just remember to bring the lip liner and gloss with you because this lip is extremely high maintenance and will require multiple touch ups throughout the night. Especially if you're eating and drinking.

The current look is:

N O V E M B E R 2 0 1 1

Color trends for this month:

Burgundy, chocolate brown, ivory, black, and gold

Current motivation for the look:

The beginning of the holiday season, the cold autumn air, and dinner parties

So the holidays are here and I can't help but to indulge in some of my favorite goodies. I'm very nostalgic about certain foods and drinks, so I find that despite the fact that I know they're no good for my health, I still treat myself to the holiday foods that I love. All in moderation of course.

Whenever I do this though, I notice how sick to my stomach I can feel or my skin starts to lose its glow and even breakout. So when the holidays are over I quickly return to my normal habits and start detoxing my body right away to try to repair any damage I might have caused by overdosing on treats.

Here are some tips to help get back on track:

1. Get Rid of the Junk Food - Finish up your treats right away or give them to a friend that might enjoy it. I never through food away, so my rule is to enjoy the last of it and don't repurchase it again. If it's in the house it will get eaten. So why tempt yourself and go cold turkey.

2. Say "No" to Clearance Items - After the holidays stores have all sorts of sales on leftover goodies. If these sales are too tempting for you, allow some time to pass before going shopping. Or just don't go down the clearance aisle. If the holiday is over, so is the snacking.

3. Eat Lots of Plants - It's best to get back on your whole-foods diet as soon as possible. This includes lots of fruits and vegetables. Try your best to eat even more within the following week, because they will cleanse your body from the inside out. No need to get any fancy detox products, because plants are a million times better for you. Why waste the money, organic produce is cheaper most of the time, especially from the farmer's market. Also, juicing is a great way to quickly provide the body with the nutrients it craves. I prefer green vegetable/herb based juices because they're amazing for weight lose. Start your morning off right by drinking or eating a sufficient amount of plants for breakfast.

4. Drink Plenty of Water - Drinking water is one of the simplest ways to flush toxins from your system. Especially in the fall and winter when your body needs the most water because the harsh temperatures and high heat from fireplaces or furnaces dehydrate the body. Adding a slice of lemon without the peel to water or tea (green or white teas are my favorite for this) is a great way to detox as well. The acidic juice from the lemon naturally helps with this and can burn fat. Why no peel on the lemon? Because I eat it after I'm done with the drink for a little extra help from the fruit.

5. Epsom Salt Baths - Run a warm bath, add salt as directed on the carton, and soak in it until the water cools. The salt will release impurities from the skin and detoxify the body. Epsom salt also helps to soothe aching bones and muscles, so these baths are great for the cold months that leave the body achy. They're great just before bed to help relax, and gives the body a head start to help heal during the night.

If you have any more tips to share please
feel free to leave them in the comments below.
I would love to hear
them.

Just for fun here's a little video on professional visual effects makeup, featuring makeup artist Michael Del Rossa and actor Doug Jones. If there was ever something I'd go back to school for it would be special effects makeup. How cool would that be!

Zombie Makeup Tutorial with Doug Jones

Coincidentally, I just watch Hocus Pocus as well, and I had no clue that that was Doug playing Billy Butcherson. It's such a fun movie.

Stay safe out there everyone and watch out for Boboblins. Don't let them eat your pumpkins.

When I saw William Gibbon's So You Want to Work in the Video Game Industry video about two robots talking about the game industry and what it's really like, I couldn't stop laughing.

Watch the video here:

So You Want to Work in the Video Game Industry

This is so true and I just sat there thinking to myself, "This is the stuff they don't teach you in college." It's the kind of information that I wish I would have known about as an artist as well. My professors always talked about the "art" of video games and how awesome it is to be a part of something grand, but at the same time I could have benefited from learning about the corporate side of things instead of learning first hand without any warning at all.

As mentioned in the video, GAMES ARE PRODUCTS, nothing more to the publishers and suits that are selling them. It truly is about money and what sells. So having to deal with that as a developer can be quite challenging at times. I am reminded of when Infinity Ward wanted to make a game called Modern Warfare and all the executives fought it tooth and nail because WWII games were what sold, and they just wanted more of the same. Of course we all know how that went down. Very well indeed.

It's the developers and the individual employees that have to fight for those changes, so of course that can wear one down and put a lot of stress on the team to try to make things work despite all of the craziness. Because at the end of the day the people with the money win. Not the artist with a vision, the designer with an amazing idea, the programmer with awesome code, or the writer with a fantastic story.

I noticed that there are a lot of negative comments on the video, such as, "You're crushing young people's hopes and dreams." I'm assuming that most of those are coming from gamers and not industry professionals, because as stated previously, the points made are valid and it's just to inform others about what they might be unaware of.

I would never trade in my video game experience for the world, but I was one of those artists that went in with higher expectations than I should have. It would have been nice to know more about the business side of things to help me prepare for what was in store. That goes for anyone on the team, not just artists; producers, programmers, designers, writers, testers, etc.

Cheers,
