Mrs. Gill Evans lead our service for us. Year Six read poems and gave us some general information about the significance of Easter. Children sang a selection of Easter hymns and songs and the KS2 choir sang a seasonal song about the joys of eating chocolate!

Warm weather, Uniform and Water Bottles

Please make sure that all uniform is named. In warmer weather children often leave sweatshirts outside. Garments are easily returned as long as they are named. Summer footwear must be practical. Our uniform states black shoes or sandals. Open toed sandals, beach shoes, flip-flops and trainers are not suitable or safe for all day wear in school.

As warmer weather approaches (we hope!) please make sure your child has a sun hat and has had sun cream applied before coming to school. Children are allowed to drink water during the day from their own water bottle. Children can re-fill bottles from the water cooler or tap in the activity area at break times. Water bottles are available at £1.00 each from the school office. Water is provided at lunch time, but not at other times during the day.

Visit from the New Vicar

Mrs. Gill Evans brought Rev. Terry Mason to school on Tuesday. Rev Terry has recently been appointed as vicar of the three local parishes including St. Michael and all Angels, Claverdon. Reverend Terry’s visit was brief on this occasion, but he will come back to visit us once he takes up his appointment later this year.

Friday Fun

Friday afternoon was a bit more relaxed than usual as it was our last afternoon at the end of a long term. Children were given the opportunity to enjoy some fun activities before our Easter break. We return to school on Tuesday 3rd May. I hope everyone enjoys a restful break.

Nut allergies

Periodically, we remind families that we have one or two pupils in school with severe nut allergies. These children are sensitive to airborne nut spores so we ask you not to send into school any snacks or packed lunches containing nuts in any form. Thank you

New dining tables

We have purchased new tables with seats attached for use at lunchtime. We are currently experimenting to find the best system to accommodate pupils so that they can eat lunch comfortably.

Red Nose Day

Thank you for your generous donations – the total amount raised was £233

Best wishes,
Kate Gover

From the Office

Term Dates 2011/12

We have confirmed our term dates for the next academic year – please see below. Pupils in Year 4 and Reception have been working together on Thursday mornings throughout this term on a project on India. They have been supported by the Davinder Virk and Liz Rose who have shown them how to design traditional Paisley patterns. All children have produced some beautiful decorative art work. There is a display of children’s work on the notice board in the hall.

Thursday mornings were not just spent producing artwork; the classes practiced separately performing the story of the Raja’s Ears. The story was told in dance and song with Davinder and Liz narrating and playing a musical accompaniment to the story. Children performed brilliantly and amazed us all with their brilliant bhangra dancing. Before the performance finished, children were invited to bring their parents to the front to join in the dancing. You can truly say that a good time was had by all! Thank you to all the teaching staff who came along on Monday evening and performed alongside the children – you all helped to make the performance a lively, exciting event.

On Monday 4th April Class 4 and Year R did a performance called the Raja’s big ears. At 2pm in the afternoon we did a performance to the school and by the look of it the audience really enjoyed it! Then at half six all the parents came and we did a second performance and, of course, we couldn’t have done it without Liz and Davinder. A big thank you to them. By Katie Phillips Year 4.

PE Footwear

We would like to remind parents that children should have a pair of trainers and a pair of shorts for outdoor PE activities. Please ensure that all your child’s PE and uniform items are clearly labelled.

Lost property

On Wednesday, weather permitting we intend to display all lost property in the playground. The team showed fantastic netball skills throughout and they won very convincingly. Alex Bruce was named “player of the match”. All have very promising ability to play netball for years to come. I would like to thank Miss Gath and the parents for the very generous gift I received. Also thank the parents for their support and taking teams to matches throughout the season and doing refreshments. Netball finishes for year 4 & 5 next Monday until September. Sarah Bonsall

Year 1 visit to Leamington Gurdwara Sahib

On Friday 1<sup>st</sup> April, year 1 visited the Leamington Gurdwara Sahib to support our R.E work on the Sikh faith. We had a fascinating morning looking around such an impressive building. We were shown the three prayer halls and were fortunate that in one, the Priest was reading from the Gura Granth Sahib so the children had the opportunity to sense the atmosphere during Sikh worship. Although they were in unfamiliar surroundings the children behaved impeccably and were a credit to our school community. Many thanks to the adults who came with us. Here are just a few of the children’s comments – I liked the Gurdwara ! The size was just amazing! – Lewis;

I learnt that it takes 48 hours to read all of the Sikh Holy Book – Eleanor; Now I know why you take your shoes off and cover your head – Isabelle.

Please check the website as we will load some photos very shortly.

Football News

Last Thursday was the first tournament that the current football team has played together. My word, what a fantastic performance from every player! After the first match ended 0-0, the boys won the next two games 1-0! Going into the final group game, we were told it would be very close at the top, but a 0-0 draw put Claverdon through to the semi-finals. After a hard fought game against a very good Temple Grafton, a 0-0 draw meant the match would go to penalties. Unfortunately we lost the shoot-out but the players were delighted with their performance. A great sign for future success for Claverdon football team!

Dinner Money

As the spring term comes to an end next Friday, please can all dinner money accounts be settled by then. If you are not sure what you might owe, please see Sheila in the office!

Film Premiere at Claverdon!

Hollywood style came to Claverdon School on Tuesday morning. The red carpet was laid down outside Year 3 and a group of edgy reporters from Year 6 had microphones at the ready to catch a few words from some of the stars before they entered the classroom. The stars were really dressed up for the occasion and many parents managed to put on the glam too!

Everyone enjoyed watching the premiere of the film based on their topic of healthy eating. We watched several very professional interviews and heard various experts pass on their knowledge about healthy lifestyles. like all good films, great attention was paid to careful editing (thanks to Miss. Smets – a brilliant job done). Careful editing meant that there were several out takes. The out takes followed the film. Film stars themselves gave us plenty to enjoy as we watched their well acted interviews, but the out takes had some of the audience rolling in the aisles as the children showed us the humour that was integral to this project. Congratulations to Miss Smets and Year 3.

Easter Activity Morning

Children enjoyed a very different morning on Wednesday. We had a variety of activities on offer. Children chose a workshop before break and a second workshop after break. All staff ran workshops on their own or with a colleague. Children could choose from a selection of workshops including Easter card making, biscuit making and decorating, painting, a spring maths trail, Country dancing and , of course, an Easter egg hunt. We invited visitors to have a look around the school at the same time and were pleased to welcome several parents and parents and younger children.

Year 2 visit to Stratford Butterfly Farm

On Thursday morning, Year 2 visited Stratford Butterfly Farm as part of their topic on lifecycles. They were given a very informative tour of the farm including the “emerging cupboard” where the children witnessed a brand new butterfly leaving its chrysalis behind! It brought the current science topic on “life cycle” to life. The tour guide commented on their excellent listening skills and thoughtful questions.

Best wishes,
Kate Gover

FCPS

We would just like to say huge thanks you for last weeks cake Friday. We raised an impressive £68.00 and also managed to feed our visiting netball players,

Diary Dates 2011

Apr 15th Break up Easter Holiday

May 3rd Summer term starts

May 9th – 13th Sats Week

May 17th Maths Day

May 24th e-safety parent session

May 27th Inset day – School Closed

May 30th-June 3rd Half Term School Closed

June 7th Henley Field Events

June 9th Henley Track Events

June 24th-27th Yr 6 to Tregoyd

w/c June 27th Enterprise Week

June 28th Secondary Transfer Day

July 4th-8th Year 5 to IOW

July 13th Sports Day

July 14th Alternative Sports day (if wet)

July 18 – 19 Year 5/6 Production

July 22nd End of term

Sept 6th School opens yr 1-6

Sept 7th Reception start

Oct 21st School closed – training day

Oct 24th – 28th Half term

Dec 16th School closes Christmas Holidays

Jan 4th Spring term start – School open

Feb 13th-17th Half Term

April 2nd – 13th School closed Easter Holidays

June 4th – 8th School closed half term

July 19th School closes for children

July 20th School closed – training day for staff

http://www.claverdonschool.org.uk/

Miss. Gath and Year 4 link with Year 4 at Birchfield. Thank you to parents who went with Year 4 on Tuesday. The following reports were written by Year 4 pupils.

On Wednesday 29th March Class 4 went to Birchfield Community School. First we went in a coach which took about 45 minutes. Then we arrived at Birchfield, it was massive! We went to a mosque which was very interesting. After that we played with Class 15 and had lunch. I had curry it was very yummy. I really enjoyed Birchfield and I was sad when we had to go. Hopefully they are going to come to Claverdon soon and I am very excited. I really enjoyed meeting Birchfield Frankie

On Wednesday year 4 went to Birchfield Community School. First Mrs Ravat and Mr Hassein took us round the mosque and the man that showed us round gave us a carton of orange juice at the end. When we got back from the mosque we had lunch and finally Mrs Ravat took us on a tour round the school with 21 classes and I liked the whole school handprints on the wall. Then we got on the coach and came back to Claverdon School. Sabyn

Football Success!

The football team competed at the Stratford District Tournament on Thursday 31st March. They played brilliantly and made it to the semi-final! They unfortunately lost in a penalty shoot out but it was a great achievement to get this far especially as players came from Years 4, 5 and 6. A huge thank you to Mr Field for all his hard work with the Football Club and the team.

Schoolcomms

On Tuesday we e-mailed all parents for whom we have an e-mail address to test the new Schoolcomms e-mail system. The accompanying letter details the new system and further actions required – we will be collecting updated e-mails from you until the end of term and will begin using the system after the holiday. You can confirm your details on the accompanying slip or by e-mail to admin2017@we-learn.com

FCPS - Mother’s Day Gift Shop – Tuesday 29th March

The gift shop did a roaring trade! Our thanks to Mrs. Laura White and Mrs. Lucy Wade from FCPS who organized such a super shopping opportunity for all to purchase some little mother’s day gifts which will no doubt be appreciated on Sunday. The shop generated great excitement and many children wanted to personalize and to re wrap their gifts at Clover Club on Tuesday afternoon.

Fun Friday cake sale last Friday was a great success. Thank you to everyone who contributed another wonderful selection of delicious cakes to raise money for the school.

FCPS donation to the school

If you have been in the school hall recently you will see that it has been painted and we have new blinds at all the windows. The blinds are a great improvement on the old curtains. The blinds successfully blackout most of the daylight and are extremely effective. This helps us to create a better atmosphere in the hall for our assemblies and productions.

A great big thank you to the FCPS for funding our new blinds. This is such a valuable donation to the school and is a gift in daily use.

FUTURE EVENTS

Spring / Easter Workshops / Open Morning – Wednesday 6th April

Please come and ‘drop in’ on Wednesday morning from 9.15 – 10.00 and / or from 11.00 -11.45 when the children will be enjoying be a variety of Easter themed activities. He weighed in at just over 6lbs. Our congratulations to the family. You may meet Joseph enjoying the sunshine walking with his parents in village.

Year 6 Assembly Wednesday 23rd March

Year 6 took us back to the Sixties for their assembly this week. They modelled clothes from the decade and reported key news events. They did so well despite the technical problems. A massive thank you to all parents for singing Hey Jude !

Year 4 visit to Sulgrave Manor last week.

Kaitlin wrote the following;

On Wednesday 16th March Class 4 went to Sulgrave Manor to learn more about the Tudors.

When we arrived we found a huge gate that was very mysterious, we were all in costume for the day and when the gate opened the people who were there were dressed up too. When they introduced them selves we found out their names were Alice and Nell. We found out what some Tudor clothes are called.

After a quick visit to the shop and lunch, we looked in the manor house. We stopped in the kitchen, bedchambers and dining room; then we hopped on the bus and went back to school.

Year 1 visit to Compton Verney Tuesday 22nd March

Year 1 went to Compton Verney to further investigate their topic on buildings. Children had an exciting day looking at architectural shapes around the building. Following their walk everyone was able to make a clay impression featuring some of the shapes they had observed in the building’s structure. Thank you to parents and Mrs. Pilling who came along to help.

Open the Book Assembly

Thank you to the ‘Open the Book’ group who performed a Bible story in our assembly on Monday morning. We appreciate their occasional performances.
