(I'm sure you're wondering ... what the heck could he be emailing me about!) Well, I just had to tell you something amusing. The reason I'm telling you now is because the following has happened TWICE in the past 2 weeks.

I was working a 50 year old birthday party last weekend. Strolling. I see a couple sitting off by themselves, so I figure I'll go amuse them. I'm making some small talk with them, and they ask me if I know you, Al The Only. And they start raving about you. (Don't worry, I set them straight. LOL just kidding.) They were talking about the card on the ceiling ... They had used you for parties quite a bit in the past. (The mans name was Marshall, with an exotic looking wife.)

The point being, that this has happened in the past a few times, and TWICE in the past week, that people have mentioned Al The Only. And I have to try and follow that!!!!! Hopefully I did a good job.

But jeez, you really put the pressure on sometimes.

I wonder why the heck you moved out of town, with the reputation you have here. (Well, I don't really wonder why since Detroit SUCKS. More now than ever with the auto industry problems.)

Anyway, that's my story. I thought you would enjoy it.

Fred Lenter

Magician Al The Only appearing for Toys for Tots on Thursday, December 14, 2006 in Grosse Pointe Shores, Michigan at Robusto's Martini / Cigar Bar

Magician Al The Only appearing for Toys for Tots
on Thursday, December 14, 2006
at 8:30 pm
in Grosse Pointe Shores, Michigan
at Robusto's Martini / Cigar & Wine Bar

Seasons Greetings,

I'm sure you are in the throws of the busy, hectic, mad dash of the holidays. style="color:#000000;">The year was 1980; I was 22 years old and had been in love with magic since I was 12. That was the year I met the illustrious Will Rock (William George Rakauskas, April 25, 1907 - May 4, 1995), but first allow me to digress.

In 1972 I received a magicians’ pictorial book, as a gift, from an amateur magician, Joe Tomasik (July 3, 1903 - November 16, 1985) who lived in Wyandotte, Michigan. Mr. Joe was a friendly gentleman who worked in the steel mills downriver from Detroit. Even though Mr. Joe never did magic full time he loved to perform magic for family, friends and at church functions. My oldest brother, Stan, who, at the time was a priest at Mt. Carmel Catholic Church where Mr. Joe was a parishioner, told Mr. Joe that one of his younger brothers was an aspiring magician. Mr. Joe extended an invitation to me come over and visit. He had a basement full of magic tricks, props, books and memorabilia. It was a magician’s playroom and Mr. Joe delighted in showing me trick after trick. I had the pleasure of subsequent visits and each time was sent home with a trick to learn. Our friendship grew and on one visit while perusing through Mr. Joe’s library I came across a book published by the Abbott’s Magic Manufacturing Company out of Colon, Michigan. The book “Tops Pictorial Album of Magicians” was published in 1966. Basically it was a compilation of photos of magicians who graced the cover and pages of “The Tops” and “The New Tops” magazines. There are pictures of the well known greats like Houdini, Blackstone, Sr. and Jr., Dante, Keller, Carter and Thurston, just to name a few; ninety-two pages of the world famous and local greats. By the time I received the book some of these prestidigitators had passed but many of them were still alive. I took it upon myself to get as many autographs as possible. I carried the book around to magic meetings, conventions and of course to the Abbott’s Magic Get-Together every August, in Colon, Michigan where many of these folks still attended each year.

As the years passed, more and more of these wonderful people were leaving this worldly stage. On a chance meeting in 1980, with a magician friend, Warren Stephens (December 13, 1931 - April 6, 2006), from Roseville, Michigan, I found out some wonderful news. Warren, a magic inventor, manufacturer, lecturer and historian, was paging through my book, admiring some of the autographs I’d collected. He told me stories of many of the magicians pictured in the book. He also told me of who was still around and who was gone. I put a cross next to the names of those who had departed, hoping it would be awhile before I met them. As we leafed through the pages we came upon Will Rock’s picture. Warren told me that Will was still alive. I couldn’t believe it. I didn’t know much about Will Rock but I knew he had purchased the Thurston show and that he traveled with a full evening show. He was of iconic class in the magic community, a legend, one of magic’s unsung heroes. I HAD TO MEET THIS MAN! Warren told me that Will Rock lived in St. Clair Shores, Michigan, was retired from magic, hated magicians and wanted to be left alone. I didn’t care. All I wanted was an autograph, one minute of the man’s time and I wouldn’t bother him after that. I wouldn’t pester him. I simply wanted an autograph. Warren told me to leave him alone. He told me that if I called Will and Will found out that I was a magician, he would hang up on me. If I showed up at his door he would slam the door in my face. This was the furthest thing from the truth but I didn’t know it at the time. I was young, persistent and had to meet Will Rock, albeit for an autograph.

It just so happened that my then girlfriend and now my wife, Lori, lived in St. Clair Shores. Not that St. Clair Shores is a small city but I assumed that it would be easy to find Will. I called the local Catholic church to see if Will was registered there. No luck. Then by a stroke of genius I decided to look in the phone book and there he was.

What to do? I was told to leave him alone. I was told that once he found out I was a magician he wouldn’t have anything to do with me, but I couldn’t resist. All I wanted was Will Rock’s autograph. I thought of sending Lori in my place, there’s no way he could have said no to that beautiful brunette. Instead, I mustered up all the courage I could find to call him. I tried to fit in two minutes of an introduction into five seconds. I was afraid that as soon as Will knew I was a magician, he would certainly hang the phone up on me.

I placed the call. “Hello? Is this Will Rock?” I asked as the person answered the phone.

“Yes,” he replied.

“My name is Al, please don’t hang up on me. I’m a local professional magician. I’d love to meet you. I have a book with your picture that I would love to have you autograph. That’s all I want. My girlfriend lives here in St. Clair Shores, I’m not too far away. I promise not to bother you after that. Please, can I meet you?” I’m sure I said more and didn’t take a breath in between the sentences.

Will interrupted me and I was afraid that was it. He was going to hang up on me. He knew I was a magician. This was the end. Instead, he said, “I’m very busy right now and need to get going, but if you call me tomorrow, I’d be happy to talk to you.”

“I can call you tomorrow?” I asked surprisingly.

“Yes, please do,” the wonderful voice said on the other end of the phone.

“Really, I can call you back tomorrow?” I asked or begged, I’m not sure which.

“Of course, I’d love to talk to you,” said Will.

What just happened? Will I be able to live until tomorrow, I thought. Seriously, I could call Will Rock back the following day. What will he tell me tomorrow, I asked myself. All I wanted was an autograph.

The following day came. I don’t know why I was nervous. I was invited to call this person back. I wanted to meet him but I was uncertain if he would give me the opportunity. The next day came and I made the call. I was so nervous. Once again I was talking a mile a minute. I was afraid that I wouldn’t be able to plead my case before being hung up on. As I was rattling off my litany I was sure to be cut off and hung up on. In the middle of a sentence Will told me to slow down. I took a deep breathe. I explained to Will that I had a book that I would love to have him autograph. He sounded trilled and invited me to come over. Really? I thought. “Can I bring my girlfriend with me?” I asked. This entire scenario was going in a different direction than I had expected.

Will gave me his schedule and told me what day would be the best for him. He literally lived within a half mile from Lori’s home. We made a date and Lori and I went to meet Will Rock.

Will and Ruth Rock lived in a nice condominium on Jefferson Avenue in St. Clair Shores. They had a swimming pool outside their front door. Will Rock, a short, white haired, white handle bar mustachioed gentleman answered his door.

“Hi, I’m Al The Only and this is my girlfriend, Lori,” I said.

When Lori and I arrived we were made very welcome by our gracious hosts.

We were quickly invited in and introduced to Ruth.

Ruth was a petite, pretty lady. The couple would have looked perfect on a wedding cake. They were delightful.

“This is the book I told you about, can I please have your autograph?” I asked.

We were invited to sit down. “Would you like anything to drink?” we were asked. Graciously we accepted and all sat down.

I have to admit, I was expecting an ogre, a bitter old man, who without knowing me would hate me just because I was a magician. It was the furthest thing from the truth. Will and Ruth were superb hosts. We talked about magic, magicians and how Lori and I fit into the mix. Will graciously autographed my book and gave me a few souvenirs of his show biz days. Will had put together a little surprise package for me complete with 8x10s, throw out cards, news articles and assorted memorabilia. This was far and beyond anything I had expected. The thing that startled me the most was when we were leaving--- he invited us back!

I still wasn’t sure where I stood in all this. I promised Warren Stephens I wouldn’t bother Will Rock but then Will invited me back, what to do? I didn’t want to bother Will and Ruth but they seemed genuinely sincere about inviting us back.

I had the pleasure of visiting with Will and Ruth on a few more occasions. Each time we grew a little closer. Each time, new and exciting stories where told to me. Stories of how magicians made it through the depression. Stories of how Will used his brother in certain illusions and finally the story of how it was time to pack up the show, settle down with his family and put that chapter of his life behind him.

I found Will and Ruth to be a fun, wholesome, wonderful couple. They lived two separate lives, the life of show biz and the life on regular city folk. I respected their privacy and relished in their company. There was always a cocktail to be had and a story to be told. They were comfortable with both.

On August 31, 1988, Lori and I hosted a luncheon for a few of Detroit’s Magic Elite. As a full time pro, I was very fortunate to know and hold as friends some of the greats in our industry. Two of my dear friends included Milt Kort (October 13, 1917 – August 1, 2003) and Clare Cummings (February 4, 1912 - October 31, 1994).

Milt Kort was a pharmacist by trade but was probably one of the best coin men in our industry. Milt co-authored Bobo’s “Modern Coin Magic.” Clare Cummings worked for Dupont but every Saturday morning on local televison he was the original Milky the Twin Pines Dairy Magic Clown. There was a waiting list of kids who wanted to be on his TV show. To this day if you ask a 50 year old who grew up in Detroit what the magic words are, he’ll exclaim, “Twin Pines!” (Side note: Clare Cummings’ caricature of Milky the Clown is still on the milk cartons of Twin Pines Dairy. Karrell Fox was the second Milky.)

Milt and Clare knew I was in contact with Will Rock. Neither had ever met him. Lori and I decided to have a little luncheon and invite all three couples to attend. The Rocks graciously accepted and were enthusiastic to meet Milt and Clare but you would have thought Milt and Clare were star stricken kids (as I was, too) when they found out they were going to meet Will Rock. I understood they’re excitement because I couldn’t contain mine. I was having lunch with these three notable gentlemen and their spouses in my home! It was a delightful afternoon. I just wish I had a video camera to film them as the stories abounded that afternoon.

Will Rock was a warm, gentle man. He loved magic. He loved talking about magic, the good and the bad. He loved reminiscing about life on the road and he wasn’t shy about explaining why his wife, daughter and personal life determined that it was time to stop traveling. I didn’t realize what a special friendship I had with Will until his death in 1995. Lori and I were two of only three magicians invited to attend Will’s memorial service. Of all the people Will had entertained and all the magicians he had touched, I was flattered to be invited. What overwhelmed me was that the family asked me to perform some magic as a tribute to Will, as his eulogy. You cannot imagine my esteemed honor. What surprised me is that many of Will’s recent friends didn’t know anything about Will’s life as a magician. They didn’t even address him as Will, to them he was Bill. Will Rock who toured with a full evening magic show; Will Rock who followed in the footsteps of Howard Thurston; Will Rock who left the stage to be a father and family man; Will Rock who was revered by magicians from around the world; Will Rock who silently disappeared from magic; and I was asked to perform at his memorial, an honor I humbly accepted.

I will always cherish my friendship with Will and Ruth Rock and now their daughter Gretchen. I will not forget the warm and endearing man who toured with a full evening magic show but still took the time to autograph a book for a young aspiring magician. This handsome, white haired, handlebar mustachioed, short-in-stature person (who) by being humble and sincere was larger than life.

I miss you Bill and Ruth, may you rest in peace.

Aloha,

Al The Only
www.tricky1.com

Please tell your friends to log in to my writings at Al The Only blogs
http://altheonly.blogspot.com
and please leave a comment, I’d love to hear from you.

Cute Short Halloween Jokes for Children

Children love to laugh.

When I first started doing magic shows in 1970 (I was all but a child myself) I performed at a lot of children’s birthday parties. After a few years I graduated to Mother and Daughter luncheons, Father and Son banquets and Cub Scout Blue and Gold Banquets. As a magician I knew my job was to amaze my audience but I quickly learned that people love to laugh. It’s actually very therapeutic. I don’t do very many children’s show any more. All my time is focused on entertaining adults at conventions and company events but when I do get the chance, the uncle in me comes out and, boy do we have fun!

Children enjoy a good joke just like the rest of us. To them silly is funny. To them gross is funny. Children can find the element of funny in just about everything. So I share with you the following groaners and guffaws. A little bit of clean humor goes a long way.

If you have kids, grandchildren, nephews or nieces you going to have some good clean fun telling them these jokes. These jokes are silly, cute and by adult standards, down right dumb but try a few on a child and watch them run off to tell their friends. And another thing, you just might find yourself reminiscing about when you heard these jokes as a kid.

Enjoy and Happy Halloween!

Earthquake that hit Hawaii on Sunday, October 15, 2006

Dear Friends,

I am overwhelmed by everyone’s concerns regarding the earthquake that hit the Hawaiian Islands on Sunday, October 15th. My wife, Lori, and I have been inundated with phone calls and e-mails from around the world. It's very heart warming. Your thoughtfulness is very appreciated.

I am currently on the mainland. I just did a big fund raiser on Saturday evening for a wonderful organization called “Just For Kids.”

Lori called me Sunday morning after the quake hit. It was her first earthquake and she doesn't want to go through another one. I was in two different earthquakes in California a few years ago.

Thankfully everyone and everything is fine. Lori was a little shook up (no pun intended). We lost power at the house and a few things fell off the shelves and walls but other than that, no major damage. We called friends on the Big Island (which is closer to the epicenter) and fortunately they are fine, too.

I guess this was scarier than damaging. My concern was that this could have trigger a tsunami but all reports are that it shouldn't happen.

Here is a report and a few thoughts from Lori:

The news media makes it sound worse than what it is. And since all news comes out of Honolulu, Oahu, they act like they had the major brunt of the quake when in reality we on Maui are closer to the Big Island (i.e. Hawaii) where the epicenter was. Our friends on the Big Island are fine other than being shaken up (still no pun intended). Fortunately there were no casualties and damage was minimal. Any evacuations are merely precautionary.

A reference to the epicenter to Maui would be like the distance from Chicago to Detroit. I was in the bathroom getting ready for church when the entire condo started shaking violently. It sounded and felt like a freight train coming thru the wall. I could hear knickknacks falling off the walls and shelves. My cupboards held up well so no broken dishes or what not. Being a midwest girl and observing windy and overcast weather, my initial thought was tornado and thus ducked down in the bathtub all the while thinking the upstairs condo was going to crash in on me.

In a minute or two it ended. I ran outside and asked my neighbors, "What the HELL was that?!" "That--" they declared, "was an earthquake!" We were without power for about 4 hours. We learned that the quake was 6.6 and the epicenter located approx 6 miles south of the Big Island (Hawai'i). Thankfully, I did not feel the 2-3 aftershocks that followed. Everyone's main concern was tsunami but radio reports quickly assured us there was no threat of one.

Oh and if anyone viewed the AOL news pictures -- that chicken stand in Kihei (here on the South shore of Maui about 30 minutes from us) with all the people lined up -- had nothing to do with the earthquake but everything to do with just being good grinds. (That’s local talk for good food.)

News people!!?$!!

Hope that was the first and last quake I'll ever experience. Thanks for caring.

Well that’s the update from Lori who was there. I’m here on the mainland for two more shows before I return home on October 25th.

The phone is ringing with shows being booked for 2007. If any portion of your trip will take place after December 31, you'll need a valid passport to re-enter the U.S.

When I travel, which is frequently, I always carry my passport. It’s just a good practice. That way it’s always with me and I never need to go looking for it when the occasion arrises and I need it.

Here’s an extra little travel tip. I have made xerox copies of my passport. One copy is in my office, an other is at home where my wife can find it and the third is in my carry on bag. In the event I lose my passport or it gets stolen, I have a copy with me or I’m a phone call away of getting a copy or at least I can get the number to get a replacement. This is a small precaution that I haven’t needed to use but it’s there. Another idea is to scan your passport and have it in your laptop computer.

For more information on how to get a passport, prices and requirements go to www.travel.state.gov.

I wish you safe and happy travels.

Aloha,

Al The Only
www.tricky1.com

Please tell your friends and invite them to check out my blogs at
Al The Only blogs
http://altheonly.blogspot.com
and please leave a comment, I’d love to hear from you.

Ventriloquist Week is coming to the Late Show with David Letterman.

Ever try talking to a dummy? How a business gets a new client? Or how long it takes to make a sale?

The bottom line is that “word of mouth” is the best form of advertising.

I’ve been in the entertainment field for 26 years, full time, doing magic and comedy shows. Friends are constantly asking me how I get booked around the country. Well, let me tell you, it doesn’t happen over night. I just booked a show in Jacksonville, Florida for a conference being held in January of 2007 for trucking firm. I’ll be presenting my stand-up, magic and comedy show called “Adults Laugh Louder.” (Come back to my blog next February and find out how it went.) And now for the rest of the story. (Thank you Paul Harvey.)

In November of 1998, Rob Lee was in Detroit for a convention and saw me perform. After the show he approached me and suggested that I would be great for the Christmas party his company was going to have. Well, by the time Rob got my information back to his office in Rockford, Illinois all the plans for that year’s party were in place.

Each year after that something came up. Either I was already booked, there was no budget or the party got cancelled completely. A couple years went by and I hadn’t heard anything. So in 2004 I called the company to speak to Rob just to find out that he was gone, retired, no longer with the company. You’d think my lead dried up. I asked to speak to the new person in charge of the entertainment, Denis Knuth, but found out that was a dead end, too. At this point I cut my losses, packed my bag and moved on.

Then, clear out of the blue, in June 2006, I get a call from Denis Knuth. The company was planning a huge picnic/conference for it’s vendors and employees. Denis told me that he knew Rob, had all my contact information and wanted to consider me for their corporate event. The catch was that they had a company executive who may be wanting to speak to the group. Because the day was packed with seminars and activities it was either the company honcho or me. Well, the company guy pulled rank. LOL He spoke and I didn't get the gig, but, it sounds like the folks in Rockford will be hiring me for 2007.

Time passes and this September I receive an e-mail from Patty Marin in Jacksonville, Florida. Patty works for a division of the company up in Rockford. She tells me that she’s heard about me and needs more information. I sent her to my website, spoke to her on the phone twice and was told she wants to hire me. The contract is sent, a deposit is paid and I’ll be in Jacksonville, Florida on January 25th.

So, what started eight years ago and is three times removed from the person whom I originally met has finally culminated in a show for the client and a booking for me.

There are quicker and easier ways to get booked but persistence, product and timing do pay off. I have some companies who are just getting around to organizing this year’s Christmas party and other groups who are booking me into the year 2008. If you have an event: be it a luncheon, banquet, holiday party, convention or hospitality suite in Illinois, Florida, Michigan, Hawaii, Maui, California or anywhere else please contact me so we can talk about how I can help you.

Aloha,

Al The Only
www.tricky1.com

Please tell your friends and invite them to check out my blogs at Al The Only blogs
http://altheonly.blogspot.com
and please leave a comment, I’d love to hear from you.

Robusto’s Martini Lounge and Wine Bar Grosse Pointe Woods, Michigan My favorite Martini Bar in the country!

Do you ever want to get away, relax, enjoy a delicious cocktail and, even though you’re a stranger, feel welcome?

I travel, a lot! Sitting in a hotel room, or almost as bad, a hotel bar just isn’t my idea of seeing a city. So where do you go? If you’re ever in the Detroit metropolitan area, enjoy outstanding drinks (especially martinis), savor a good cigar, relish tasty gourmet appetizers or just want to delight in an elegant, intimate lounge, YOU HAVE TO GO TO Robusto’s Martini Lounge and Wine Bar.

Robusto's is located on the East side of town at 19271 Mack Avenue (on the West side of the street), just North of Moross in Grosse Pointe Woods, Michigan. You can call them at 1-313-881-0100.

Robusto's celebrates the renaissance of the Martini with Michigan's largest original Martini menu (over 185) and a delicious gourmet appetizer and snack selection. Let me tell you a couple quick points before I tell you the rest of the story.

• Robusto’s is Open 6 nights
• Live music Thursday, Friday and Saturday
• Gourmet Appetizers
• 100" Big Screen TV
• Over 185 Martinis
• Voted Best Martini Lounge by The Detroit News

My first experience with Robusto’s was back in December of 2001 when I was hired to perform my sleight-of-hand, strolling, up close magic at a company Christmas Cocktail Party. The place was bought out for the night to host this corporate event. Let me tell you, I’ve been in a few bars in my life, this one read sophisticated casual and welcoming all over it. From the granite counter tops, African Mahogany walls, loft, extensive use of real wood and brass, and the impressive banks of humidors, Robusto’s exudes elegance. That evening I didn’t partake in the libations but I certainly sampled the food, it was scrumptious. That evening I also met the owners, Scott and Jackie Baumgart. You haven’t met two more delightful people. This hard working couple couldn’t have been more hospitable if you were in their own home. They bought the bar in 2000. Scott has been around this business for over 20 years, Jackie was new to it. Scott says, “Jackie wanted a bed and breakfast and wound up with a martini lounge.” (Some people might love that turn of events.)

While you’re there, ask about the cards on the ceiling.

I’ve had the pleasure of preforming at Robusto’s on a couple subsequent occasions but I’ve also taken delight in the opportunity of occasionally visiting just to relax and enjoy.

Robusto’s gives me the impression of a corner bar, a Cheers, but a place where business people co-mingle with local socialites and everyone gets dressed up to be there. It’s classy, cozy, comfy, elegant all on the dressy side of casual. It’s refined yet cordial. It’s a must visit if you like martinis and cigars.

Robusto's serves its Martinis the way they were meant to be served, "Shakin'… not stirred!" From the traditional Vodka Martini to their selection of original Martini recipes that spans the sublime - the Dirty Pickled Martini garnished with a large Pickle Spear; to the delightfully unique - Robusto's Chocolate Martini, served in a chocolate dripped glass. Did I mention that Robusto's has over 185 Martinis on their menu? By the way, I love their vanilla martini.

Robusto's also offers a fine selection of wines by the glass or bottle, Champagne, a variety of single malt Scotches, beer, coffee drinks and delicious desserts, as well as a limited selection of fine smoking cigars. Additionally, only the finest ingredients are used in all of Robusto's libations, such as fresh juices, fruits, vegetables, gourmet olives and the like.

Though Martinis are the mainstays of this intimate Grosse Pointe Woods establishment, do not refer to it as just a Martini lounge. It's a cocktail lounge, a cozy gathering spot where people can casually partake in the good life -- fine liquor, cigars, carefully selected wine, conversation and great music. Robustos's emphasizes casual mingling and cozy conversations, fueled by artfully mixed décor, comfortable seating, music and the best libations and friendliest service around.

For your listening enjoyment Robusto's employs some of the finest local and regional musicians and bands Thursday through Saturday nights. Furthermore, Robusto's has a large 100" screen TV in the loft area and another TV centered above the bar. There is also a Robusto's Club Member "VIP" area for select clients. Valet parking service is available on Friday and Saturday nights and many special occasions.

This may be the finest Martini, Wine, Cigar and Music lounge in Metro Detroit! I know it’s my favorite in the country. Why don't you try it for yourself?

Tell Scott and Jackie that Al The Only said “aloha.” Maybe I’ll see you there.

Aloha,

Al The Only
www.tricky1.com

Please tell your friends to log in to my writings at Al The Only blogs
http://altheonly.blogspot.com
and please leave a comment, I’d love to hear from you.

Good Bye to Genie’s Wienies

Do you have a favorite restaurant?

In all my travels, a couple of my favorite restaurants are still the ones back in my old hometown of Hamtramck, Michigan.

The tale begins in 1950 when John Cieslak purchased the little restaurant in Detroit, on the corner of Conant and Casmere, a block off the Hamtramck border. John’s oldest son, Gene, took over the restaurant in 1970. Gene, who is the very name to Genie’s Wienies, and his wife Donna ran the family business until Gene retired in 1999. Their daughter, Michelle, took over as the third generation owner.

So what is Genie’s Wienies? Genie’s is a rare metro Detroit coney island owned by Polish Americans for the past 56 years. Genie’s is more than a local coney island, it’s a city icon, celebrated by dinners, musicians and pop-culture mavens. It contains only 675 square feet and features a simple menu; hot dogs, loose burgers in a hot dog bun, hamburgers and cheese burgers all smothered with onions, mustard and their famous secret-recipe chili. French fries and Boston Coolers top off their menu. (A Boston Cooler is Vernor’s Ginger Ale with vanilla ice cream and it can’t be just any ginger ale, it HAS to be Vernors. To try a Vernors for yourself, you can order it by mail at www.vernors.com.)

My first experience going to Genie’s was when I was an alter boy at Our Lady Queen of Apostles. One Saturday, after helping the nuns clean the sacristy, my friend Rob Solecki’s dad treated us to Genie’s Wienies. The year was 1970, I was in the sixth grade. I remember the burgers cost a quarter because Rob’s dad said he recalled when they were only fifteen cents. Today you’ll dish out two dollars and five cents for the tasty morsel and if you want a cheese burger, that will cost you and extra thirty-five cents. The price may have gone up but the delicious flavor is the same.

When I was in the seventh and eight grades at Q of A Grade School my mom would occasionally give my younger brother, Joe, and me a dollar each for lunch. During our lunch break we would race over to Genies, a block away from the school, for a burger, fries and Coke; all for under a dollar. It was definitely a treat I looked forward to.

Throughout the years, as out-of-town guests would visit, one of the highlights was a visit to Genie’s. A visit to Hamtramck just wasn’t complete without it. One friend, Jeff Bibik, from Chicago, even missed his flight home because he had to have a Genie’s. What had happened was that Bibik forgot to set his watch ahead. His flight was to leave at 4pm Eastern Standard Time (EST). His watch read 2pm, but it was set to Central Standard Time (CST), which in actuality was 3pm in Detroit. So after our quick meal I ran him to the airport, we said our good-byes and a half an hour later he called to tell me he missed his flight, but not to worry, the Genie’s Wienies were worth it.

Also, throughout the years my wife, Lori, and I have had the pleasure of introducing our nephews and nieces to our local treat.

Whether it was for lunch, dinner or as a late night snack after the bars closed you always knew you’d get a delicious, one of a kind fix at Genie’s along with a smile and a hardy welcome from Gene, Donna, Gene’s brothers John or Bob and most recently Gene and Donna’s daughter, Michelle.

On September 3rd, 2006, at 5pm, after 56 years, the Cieslaks will shut down Genie’s. Sunday is going to be a sad day in Hamtramck. It’s like saying goodbye to an old friend. Genie’s Wienies has been a part of my life for over thirty-five years. A visit to my old home town just won’t be the same without them.

I wish my friends, the Cieslak family, good fate and good fortune. They are planning on reopening out in the suburbs in the near future but there will be a great void left where they once were.

Aloha,

Al The Only
www.tricky1.com

You can visit me at my above website and at
Al The Only on MySpace
http://www.myspace.com/magicianaltheonly

Please tell your friends to log in to my writings at
Al The Only blogs
http://altheonly.blogspot.com
and please leave a comment, I’d love to hear from you.

Magic in Dearborn, Michigan = up-close, close up with Magician Al The Only

Looking for a wonderful place to go out for a delicious meal? There are a few of you who get to break away on a vacation but are still tied to your laptop, PDA and cell phone.

I use Trend Micro PC-cillin as virus protection on my laptop / notebook computer and am extremely happy with their product and upgrades.

In the July edition of their new monthly newsletter “Security Brief” the fine folks at Trend Micro offer some sound advice.

*******************************************************

Protect your Digital Gear while on Vacation

Planning to take your laptop, PDA, cell phone with you on vacation? Remember some basic travel and vacation protection tips.

Make sure your computer has the latest Internet Security software for protection from viruses, spyware, Trojans, hackers and SPAM. Before you depart on your vacation, back up all critical files and information and leave your backup(s) in a secure location at home or work.

Remove unnecessary information from your laptop and USB drive, in case the device(s) are compromised or stolen. Also, password protect your computer, PDA and other digital equipment.

Be wary when accessing wireless hot-spots; free does not mean safe.

Don't pack your digital computer or other valuables in checked luggage.

Do not put or leave your laptop computer, PDA, cell phone or camera visible in the car; store it out of sight in the trunk prior to arriving at your final destination.

Keep a watchful eye on your computer, digital equipment, and other valuables, as they pass through security checkpoints. Retrieve all of your belongings after passing through security.

If lost or stolen, put a hold or cancel all of your online accounts as soon as possible - including your computer account(s), to minimize the chances of identity and information theft.

Most of all, remember to enjoy your vacation and your time away from the office.

Click here to learn more about PC-cillin and Trend Micro.

*******************************************************

I would like to thank Trend Micro for their advice and I’d like to add the following suggestions.

Have your data backed up on a travel disk and keep it separate from your computer or PDA. I keep my updated data information on a back up disk so that in the event my laptop crashes, or just as bad, gets stolen, I can access my information from another computer.

Bolt your computer down in your hotel room. I carry a cable wire with lock to secure my laptop in my hotel room. This connects to your computer and wraps around a table leg. I’ve never had any problems with hotel maids or staff but this does add a little extra security when I’m out of the room for the day. Cable locks can be purchased from you favorite computer retailer.

Personalize your equipment. It’s not a bad idea to engrave your name and phone number onto the bottom of you equipment. This may not help you find it in case of robbery but it certainly will help you identify the item if recovered.

You can’t enter without the secret word. I totally agree to have password protection on all your programs especially on your bios booth system. That way, even if anyone turns your computer on, it makes it more difficult for them to easily access your information. It’s better that they trash your machine rather then get your person or business data.

I’m in Montreal working a conference. Whether you’re on vacation or on the road for business, I wish you safe and happy travels.

Aloha,

Al The Only
www.tricky1.com

Client Testimonial

I received this wonderful letter from the new Mr. & Mrs. Ernie Lush. If you read my blog yesterday (8/13/06 - “Should we hire Al The Only or order the shrimp?”) I told you about this delightful couple who at the ages of 79 and 61, after twenty years of being together, finally got married. I performed my strolling magic during their reception back in July. Here is what Diane wrote:

*******************************************************

August 6, 2006

Dear Al,

Greetings from the new bride and groom.

Thank you for the thank you letter. You beat me to it. We are the ones who should be thanking you. The entertainment you provided our guests was certainly one of the most enjoyed and talked-about elements of our celebration. Remember our choice was “Al The Only” or shrimp? You said they’d remember you long after the taste of shrimp was forgotten. You were right!!!

We hope our affair leads to new contacts for you and that we’ll be invited to someone else’s affair so we can once again mystified and entertained by your talents. You’re terriffic!

Sincerely,

Mr. and Mrs. Ernie Lush (I just love seeing that in print.)

*******************************************************

WOW! Isn’t that nice!?!? I’ve been performing magic as a full time living for the last 26 years and I’m still flattered by such kind words. They met at a Parents Without Partners Dance in 1986. They’ve been happily ever after ever since; now, both with grown children and a couple grandchildren. They’ve been living, loving, working and playing together for twenty years. One day they overheard their youngest granddaughter tell her older sister that Grandpa and Grandma had said something. The older girl, seven years old, told her younger sister that they’re really not their grandparents because they’re not married.

This broke Ernie and Diane’s hearts. They never gave into peer pressure to get married. They didn’t get married because of the kids but that particular day their grandchildren melted their hearts. So after twenty years of dating they decided to tie the knot at the ages of 79 and 61. Diane laughingly says that “We finally got serious about the relationship.” Ernie says he robbed the cradle; Diane says she robbed the wheelchair! You have to love these two. They both have a wonderful sense of humor and even a greater zest for life.

Ernie retired from the jewelry business in March of 2006. So where do I come in?

Ernie and Diane first became acquainted with me in 1987 when the couple saw me perform at Les and Lili Gold’s American Jewelry and Loan Company Christmas Party. Diane still has the playing card I had her sign and used it in a card trick that evening. Ernie and Diane have seen me at subsequent parties. When they stared planning their wedding reception they knew they wanted to make it special. When Ernie described the reception he said that he had spent his entire life making money and now he and Diane were going to enjoy spending it. They rented the Ovation, a stunning, tri-level, 138-foot yacht that sails up and down Lake St. Clair and the Detroit River (between the international boarder of Canada and the United States). They knew that the food was going to be delicious. They knew the band, who played on the open air top level, was going to be terrific. They knew that the booze was going to be flowing freely. They knew the staff and crew of the Ovation was going to make sure the evening would float (pun intended) without a hitch (oops another pun). But Ernie and Diane wanted to take their party over the top. They wanted their very important guests to remember and talk about their reception long after the icing on the cake had melted.

Ernie and Diane had close to 250 guests at their wedding. Friends flew in from all over the world: Japan, Australia, Germany, Russia and England. Friends and family came up to Michigan from all across the United States. It was a fitting tribute to two very charming people. Ernie and Diane knew that I would be the ticket to make their party more memorable.

When I’m back in the Detroit area and have a free Wednesday evening, I magically pop back into my old stomping grounds, Kiernan’s Steak House, in Dearborn, Michigan, where I use to perform before moving to Maui. Ernie and Diane contacted me, found out what night I was going to be at Kiernan’s, came in for dinner and to talk to me. In between courses I would stop at their table to entertain them with my magic. They told me the story about their granddaughters. They told me about their wedding plans and how they wanted to include me. Every time I stopped by, we had fun, they kept saying how much they loved my work and they wanted me at their party but probably couldn’t afford me. I told them I would call them after I knew if I was available for their date.

My calendar was open for that date and I was going to be in the area. I called to tell them that I was available and what my fee was. Diane exclaimed that that’s exactly what the cost of the jumbo shrimp was going to be. (Later Diane told me that I had said that I would be more appreciated and with all the other delicious food no one would miss the shrimp.) Diane told me to send her a contract.

Saturday, July 22nd, 2006 was a beautiful, sunny, warm day in the Detroit area. Ernie and Diane exchanged their wedding vows near a gazebo overlooking Lake Saint Clair. The guests boarded the Ovation and as we sailed out of the Jefferson Beach Marina in St. Clair Shores, Michigan the party began. The cruise lasted four hours. My job was to mingle with the guests on all three levels as the ship sailed. Using my up close, strolling magic, sleight-of-hand and interactive comedy I brought people into conversations, included strangers into groups and basically entertained them beyond belief. The two granddaughters, who finally got Ernie and Diane together, followed me around like a pied piper. Everyone had a grand evening.

The accolades, even after 26 years, still overwhelm me. The new Mr. and Mrs. Lush (Diane LOVES seeing that in print), kept gushing over me and thanking me for being such a big part of their evening. I know I had as much fun as their guests did.

Come back for tomorrow's blog post to read Ernie and Diane’s letter to me after the reception.

Aloha,

Al The Only
www.tricky1.com

PS I'm not just selling entertainment, I provide wonderful memories of your party for your guests!

SPECIAL TRAVEL ADVISORY - August 11, 2006

As you know, I fly over 100,000 miles a year performing around the country at company parties, corporate functions and association events. That’s a lot of time in airports and on airplanes. Like many, I was glued to the news as reports came out of the UK regarding the latest terrorism attempt. You have to compliment and appreciate the fine work the UK government displayed to thwart off a potentially disastrous day.

In Hawaii, I fly Aloha Airlines Inter-island to perform at conventions with my “Al Loha - The tourist who missed his flight home and stayed by popular demand” magic and comedy show. I belong to several frequent flier clubs. I want to compliment Aloha Airlines. They were the first airline to send a public notice to help us travelers understand the new travel advisory (reprinted, with permission, below).

When visiting Hawaii check out Aloha Airlines for great rates and wonderful service to fly between the islands.

Aloha,

Al The Only
www.tricky1.com

SPECIAL TRAVEL ADVISORY - August 11, 2006

Aloha,

You may have a trip planned in the near future, and we'd like to inform you about some new security measures that have been implemented effective today.
Due to the heightened security levels recently enacted at our airports, Aloha Airlines has been advised by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) that effective immediately, any liquids or gel-like substances will not be allowed as a carry-on aboard any aircraft. Screening and disposal of such items will take place at the security checkpoints and at the departure gates. Examples of prohibited items include but are not limited to: bottled water, all beverages such as juice and milk, shampoos, toothpaste, perfumes, aerosols, hair gels, oils, lotions and creams.

NO LIQUIDS OR GELS OF ANY KIND WILL BE PERMITTED IN CARRY-ON BAGGAGE. ITEMS MUST BE IN CHECKED BAGGAGE.

Items that fall within this category include:

All beverages of any type in any size container, including:

Bottled water

Shampoo

Suntan lotion

Creams

Toothpaste

Hair gel

Contact lens solution

Other items of similar consistency

Such items may be transported in checked baggage. Exceptions include:
Baby formula or breast milk, only if a baby or small child is traveling

Prescription medicine with a name that matches the passenger's ticket

Insulin and essential other non-prescription medications

Beverages purchased in the sterile area must be consumed before boarding because they will not be permitted onboard the aircraft.

Any item that is liquid or gel-like in form, will only be allowed in the passenger's checked baggage.

Travelers should anticipate longer lines and slower processing by the TSA at the security checkpoints as a result of the additional security measures. Please plan accordingly to assure that you have sufficient time to get to your departure gate to board your flight on time. Passengers are advised to arrive at the airport at least three hours prior to departure for Trans-Pacific flights and two hours prior to departure for Inter-island flights.

Aloha Airlines would also like to advise our customers on steps you can take to ease your travel experience during this period:

Pack lightly, without clutter to facilitate easier screening.

Please arrive three hours prior to scheduled departure time for Trans-Pacific flights and two hours prior for Inter-island flights within Hawaii.

Cooperate with TSA personnel at all checkpoints and gates. TSA Security Officers will also be checking carry-on baggage at the gate.

Be attentive and vigilant to any suspicious activity.

Do not leave luggage or personal items unattended.

Due to these heightened security measures, we ask for your patience and understanding as we work closely with the TSA and our airport authorities to assure your flight's safety.

Further information is available on our website at AlohaAirlines.com/TravelAdvisory or from the TSA's own advisory page found here: TSA Travel Advisory.

TFTD (Thought For The Day) = "LOST IN THE 1950s & A friend suggested seeing Esther’s Follies. Man, am I glad I went!!!

Esther’s Follies is Texas’ Premier Magical Musical-Comedy Troupe. It’s the New Vaudeville! Since 1977 Esther’s Follies has been performing Texas’ best topical satire, magic, musical-comedy parodies and sure-fire fun set against the backdrop of Austin’s hysterical, historical entertainment district: 6th Street!

The main reason I went was to meet Ray Anderson. Ray is an outstanding, charismatic, energetic showman and he’s hilarious, too. He’s an Austin native, a nationally renowned magician and has been with Esther’s Follies for over 15 years. He’s polished in his performance and his timing is well honed. He’s been deemed "best spellbinder" by the Austin Chronicle. He perplexes both audience members and curious 6th Street revelers peering through Esther’s trademark windows. Whether as himself or his "Amazing Frank" alter-ego, Ray uniquely combines magic and comedy in a way you probably have never seen before. Ray displays cutting edge illusions just feet away from the audience but what made the night magical for me was watching his rendition of the dancing cane. Without a doubt, Ray’s rendering is by far the best in the business!

If you love to laugh, and I do mean LOL, if you love music, if you love satire, if you love magic, I guarantee you’ll absolutely love Esther’s Follies. While you’re there please tell Ray Anderson, Al The Only sent you.

Esther’s Follies is located at 525 East 6th Street in weird and wonderful downtown Austin. For tickets call (512) 320-0553.

A trip to Austin won’t be complete unless you go.

Aloha,

Al The Only
www.tricky1.com

TFTD (Thought For The Day) = “A friend is a present you give yourself.”

Many years ago I found this saying in a Chinese Fortune Cookie. I often think about its meaning.

I’m blessed with many friends, friends in my personal life and in my professional one. They’re to numerous to name but each one has touched my life either by inspiring, teaching, enlightening, encouraging, motivating, humoring, counseling and even consoling me.

Someone said “A stranger is someone you haven’t met.” I wouldn’t go that far but I certainly believe people come in and out of our lives for a reason. The friends we keep truly are presents we give ourselves.

Today, tell a friend how much they mean to you. It’ll make their day and I’m sure yours, too.

Aloha,

Al The Only
www.tricky1.com

QFTD (Quote For The Day) = "The only disability in life is a bad attitude."

The Quote For The Day

"The only disability in life is a bad attitude." - Scott Hamilton

How pure and simple this is and true, too!

You’ve seen it in your family, friends, coworkers, associates, subordinates and bosses. It’s a shame to see great potential held back and all due to bad attitude.

You’ve been to meetings, seminars, conventions and even parties where you can tell "someone" isn’t all there, simply because of bad attitude. You can see it in their body language, in their face and in their disposition. They are there in body but are disabled to learn, grow, share, interact, have fun or just plain ol fit in because they are disabled with bad attitude.

Laughter is said to be the best medicine. I can give you a double dose. At times we all need attitude adjustments. Let me offer a little bit of help with my after dinner show called "Adults Laugh Louder" or my highly acclaimed "Strolling Magic." I may not be able to totally change someone’s bad attitude but I can certainly help them put it aside for awhile.

Thank you Scott Hamilton for this poignant quote.

Aloha,

Al The Only
www.tricky1.com

TFTD (Thought For The Day) = "It is choice, not chance, that determines our destiny!"

Sonia Fatheree, closes her e-mails with the above quote. Sonia is an Account Manager for Arthur J. Gallagher & Company in Orlando. She’s a delightful gal who is high spirited and motivated. My impression of her is that she’s willing to take chances to reach the best results. Sonia hired me, Magician Al The Only, to entertain with walk around, up-close, strolling magic at a welcome reception on Marco Island, Florida for Public Risk Management Association (PRIMA) statewide Education Conference for State of Florida Officials. The conference was held at the Marco Island Hilton Resort. (My room overlooked the pool and Gulf Coast. Those Hilton folks sure make one feel welcome.)

Sonia found me on the internet. She checked out my website http://www.tricky1.com/close-up-strolling-magic.htm and looked at my references and list of past clients. She later admitted that it was when she spoke to me she knew I was the one for the event. I made her right and proud. Sonia even gave me a video testimonial that you can see on my website.

It may have been "CHANCE" that Sonia found me. The truth is that she was looking for entertainment for the kids. After we spoke she knew my talent and skill would be best used to entertain their very important adult attendees. It was her "CHOICE" to look outside of the box and convince her committee that Al The Only would be perfect for the welcome reception / cocktail party. The "DESTINY" that was determined that evening was that the attendees were blown away by the interactive sleight-of-hand and engaging, clean comedy. Best of all for Sonia, and me, was that all the principals (her bosses) were overwhelmed by the positive reaction of the attendees and where appreciative and glad of Sonia’s "CHOICE"

It’s your choice to come back and visit and please tell your friends to drop by, too.

Aloha,

Al The Only
www.tricky1.com
