3120 Upright vacuum cleaner launched in South Africa

Southern African distributor of the Tennant cleaning equipment range announced the launch of a green-labeled ETL certified upright vacuum cleaner known as the Tennant model 3120 in Southern Africa.

Vacuum cleaning moved from cleaning carpets and other surfaces into a science where it is important not just to remove dust, but also ensure good indoor air quality. (IAQ) Vacuums that effectively remove soil and keep carpets looking good will lead to carpets lasting longer, increasing return on investment.

In 2000 the CRI (United States) introduced a Green label testing program for vacuum cleaners. The testing program entails two areas of testing: a) general purpose vacuums approved for use on all conventional carpet styles; and b) vacuums specifically approved for use on carpet with a low pile, or surface texture, measuring approximately 1/4 inch or less. Vacuum cleaners that meet test protocols may display the CRI green label on packaging and the products itself.

Tennant International´s 3120 upright vacuum cleaner passed the low pile protocol which means that the 3120 vacuum cleaner is approved for use on carpet typically found in commercial or institutional buildings, such as corporate offices, schools and healthcare facilities.

S12 ride-on battery sweeper launch

Johannesburg, South Africa - Sorma S.A.(Pty) Ltd. t/a TENNANT S.A., Southern African distributor of the Tennant cleaning equipment range announced the launch of a S12 ride-on battery sweeper this week. The S12 ride-on sweeper is a larger version of the S8 walk behind sweeper and ideal for larger retail facilities.

The Tennant S12 is a very compact battery-driven ride-on sweeper with a sweeping path of 90cm. Due to its high maneuverability and the retractable side brushes it can easily reach tight corners. The hopper pops out easily for quick emptying, brushes can be changed without tools and filter cleaning is a snap. The S12 also offers low effort steering which decrease operator fatigue. The front side brush and the 70cm main brush sweep up 85L of litter and debris into its hopper. A standard dust flap picks up bulky debris.

S8 walk behind sweeper launch

Keeping indoors and out-door floors clean at the best of times is a dirty business, especially in high traffic areas for example shopping centers. How many times do you visit your local mall with the cleaning crew sweeping and mopping only with customers trampling over the floors again while they are still cleaning it?

Well, those days could soon be over with the introduction of the S8 walk behind sweeper in the South African market place. The Tennant S8 is a highly efficient battery powered sweeper with a sweeping path of 50cm to 67cm. The three-wheel turning system and easy controls are user-friendly for low operator fatigue. Tennant T6600 outdoor sweeper

Approximately 6 months ago, I did a cold call at Vesuvius South Africa. Eventually I managed to speak to Mr. Gert Coetzee, the factory manager. He advised me that they used Tennant´s products in the past and might require an outdoor sweeper in the near future.

The old machines were still on-site. I took this up with our Director at Tennant (Ricky Bodmer) after which he accompanied me to visit Mr. Coetzee.

After agreeing that a trade-in is possible, we did a complete customer needs analysis and site survey resulting in us recommending a Tennant T6600D sweeper. The demonstration took place in beginning June 2006, with the final order on 7 July 2006.

Chris Louters from Umtata recently contacted the Durban office regarding their scrubbing requirements. As part of our continued service, it is standard procedure to do a site inspection. Upon arrival the next day, we discovered that one of our competitors were on-site busy with a demonstration of their equipment.

As it so happens, we actually supplied SAB Umtata (Coca Cola´s next door neighbor) with a Tennant 7100 scrubber about a year ago. After establishing Coca-Cola´s needs and a demonstration, we met with the SAB depot manager who was kind enough to act as a Tennant referral.

Coca Cola Umtata ordered the T7 Scrubber 2 days later. Our recent follow-up indicated a very happy customer, as they were very impressed with the T7´s performance and capabilities.

Premier Foods recently invited Tennant SA to do a cleaning demonstration at their food distribution facility in Johannesburg. Being involved in food substance packaging and distribution, Premier foods required a clean and dust free environment.

We demonstrated the 5400 FaST TM autoscrubber due to its unique capabilities and features. Forklifts, trolleys and staff are continuously moving around the floor which at the best of times, make scrubbing and cleaning difficult.

Diverse labelling Company, part of the Astraflex group recently upgraded their floorcare equipment from the Tennant 5200 to the new T3 FaST^TM foam scrubber. Over the last 3 years they maintained their surfaces comprehensively. Following their recent installation of an epoxy coated floor, they needed to improve the systems in order to maintain it.

As a printing business, the operation never shut down to allow cleaning time, and this made cleaning difficult, inefficient and inconvenient to the workers.

Opting for the FaST^TM system now allows the cleaning operator to spend far more time on the floor cleaning and protecting the expensive finishes. Using less water means that the floors are left drier therefore increasing safety aspects to their staff.

At Tennant SA we believe in teamwork. This month we asked our cleaning equipment consultants to share their experiences with us as we believe that we could convey the message to clients better with practical, real life examples.

This contribution has been made by Des Reddy, from our Johannesburg offices:

Des received a call from a client in Lenasia, South of Johannesburg regarding a vacuum cleaner they were using. The client was experiencing the following:

Carpet pile was falling flat during vacuum cleaning.

Carpets did not look clean after vacuuming.

The machine they used made a lot of noise.

The area requiring cleaning was very big.

Upon probing the client, Des discovered that they were using a barrel vacuum. Armed with a G1 upright vacuum and a demo filter, Des set out to visit the client. Upon arrival at the client, Des discovered that the barrel vacuum was not the right equipment for the specific application. Barrel vacuums are known not to pick up carpet pile, hence not cleaning underneath the pile. This resulted into the carpets always looking dirty.

Des did a demo showing the client, that with the G1 upright vacuum cleaner, carpet pile is actually lifted and the dirt in between and under the carpet pile is removed. The G1 worked efficiently and fast with the carpet looking new after cleaning. By using the proper machine the large carpeted area was cleaned in less time. The G1 carpet cleaner also have reduced noise levels which did not only impress our client but her co-workers as well.

Combined with a wet extraction machine, the desired results were achieved leaving our client with a clean office.

Dust mites - removing dust effectively

The house dust mite, is a cosmopolitan guest in human habitation. The mite thrives in modern fully-carpeted, double-glazed, draught-proof homes and thrives at 25 ° C with a relative humidity of 75%.

Thes mites live on shedded human skin cells, predigested by a fungus called Aspergillus repens. It is particularly common in carpets and bedding.

Many humans are highly allergic to this allergen which cause allergic asthma, rhinitis, conjunctivitis and dermatitics. The protein responsible for the allergic reaction is called DerP1, a protease digestive enzyme found in mite feces.

So how do we control/eradicate or clean in order to remove these mites?

Regular vacuum cleaning (especially with high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters

Regular damp dustin of surfaces

Replacement of carpets with vinyl or tile floors

Covering of mattresses and pillows with impervious materials

Use of chemicals (acaricides) to kill mites

Use of fungicides to kill Aspergillus.

Cleaning vomit from carpets

Cleaning Vomit from carpets:

Citroplus food grade chemical could be used to assist with the removal of vomit from carpets.

Some vomit stains might be permanent due to the fact that it contains gastric acids.

In most cases you can use an acidic solution such as Fibreplus to help remove any staining. This will add to neutralising the carpet where the stain occured.

Vomit smells might be lingering due to bacteria remaining in the carpet fibres. To solve this problem, QAC (Sanplus) detergent could be used to eliminate the bacteria causing the smell. Please ensure that you allow some reaction time on the carpet. This is the only way to successfully remove the smell.

Sorma Sanplus:
Sorma Sanplus is a one step hard surface disinfectant cleaner sanitizer fungicide mildewed and deodorant.

DISINFECTION:
Thoroughly wet surfaces to be treated. Surfaces must remain moist for at least 10 minutes to assure proper germicidal action. This product may be used for cleaning and deodorizing, one-step cleaning, and disaffection or as a disinfectant of pre-cleaned, hard, non-porous inanimate environmental surfaces such as glass, metal, glazed porcelain, linoleum, tile, smooth leather, vinyl and enameled and finished wood surfaces. Apply this product to walls, floors, appliances, and furnishings. This product may be used through automatic floor scrubbing equipment.

CLEANING:
To clean and deodorize or to pre-clean prior to disaffection: Depending on the soil level of the area to be cleaned, use a final dilution of 1 part cleaner to 10 parts of water.

Curry stain removal from fabrics

Curry stains are a difficult substance to remove from carpets and fabrics due to the dyes present in curry powders. Citroplus will assist the removal of most of the unwanted matter. If a stain is still present after treatment with Citroplus, an ammonia solution should be used. Blot after the ammonia solution has been added. Then us a vinegar solution (Fibreplus), and blot. There might be enzymes remaining in the carpet or fabric so the use of an enzyme chemical will ensure complete success.

Citroplus is a medium to heavy duty commercial domestic and industrial liquid detergent to clean a large variety of surfaces, equipment and areas. It´s a water based detergent which makes it non-flammability contains no abrasives, ammonia or acids. Citroplus is fully biodegradable. Citroplus contains a blend of naturally derived additives specifically formulated for the breakdown of fat and oils.

Chewing gum removal from fabrics

Chewing Gum is a difficult substance to remove from fabrics. One problem is TIME. How long has is been on the surface for?

A couple of solutions:

Ice – Use ice to harden the concerned area, then chip away as much of the gum as possible. Due to the fact that gum is a natural substance a food grade chemical such as Citroplus will remove the oils and deposit on the fabric.

Peanut butter will lubricate and loosen the gum from the carpet. Of course one must now remove the peanut butter, but this can be done with Citrolplus.

The Model 800 features a massive steel frame and rugged T-beam super-structure that withstands heavy use and abuse over time. Huge steel bumpers encircle and protect the machine. The specially protected hydraulic system is designed to give and flex with movement and vibration. Other features include a side brush that retracts on impact and a Thermo-Sentry^TM to sense excess heat in the hopper and stop air flow. An SE (Severe Environment) version offers tower corner and upper body bumpers, protection devices for longer engine life and a stainless steel hopper bottom.

The logistics behind the recent grand prix held in Durban are generally unknown to most and seldom noticed on race day. However those involved tell a different story. It is interesting to know that there is a rule book specifically complied to manage such an event. The book covers procedures relating to safety, security, medical evacuation right down to the stand by plumber and electrician that has to be on call given 5 minutes notice. Of prime importance is the track surface. Imagine a puncture at 300 kph! Due to the importance of this requirement the specialists, namely TENNANT S.A, were called in to handle this prime responsibility.

TENNANT S.A. recommended using two 800D ride-on street sweepers. Covering the complete track and pit area with both machines for a total sweep in under 3 hours. Sweeping commenced at 05h00 and was generally completed before 08h00. Intermittent requirements between race's in specific areas were also handled. On one occasion our operator did a "doughnut" in front of the main stand to a standing ovation.

Spot cleaning large floor areas requiring frequent cleaning

Mopping units should always form part of the company's janitorial supply list.

The janitor will require quite a large mopping unit also known as a gear press in order to clean large floor areas. We would recommend at least 40 liter capacity.

Change the water and detergent regularly especially when the floor size is vast. Ensure that the janitor has a "wet floor" sign to warn any pedestrians that the floor is slippery when wet.

To date, as part of our cleaning equipment series for various floor areas, we looked at small area cleaning, medium areas that requires frequent cleaning and this week we will look at large areas or applications that require frequent cleaning.

Normal procedure requires sweeping, scrubbing/ vacuum cleaning. We also take a look at spot cleaning for each type of area.

Sweeping large areas.
