Middle ages workers in the beautiful vineyards of Bordeaux France, who were exposed to insect and weed killers, were found to be five times more likely to score lower in neurological test results than their work colleagues who had less or no exposure to toxic pesticides. In a repeat test four years after the initial examination, the same workers were found to register a significant drop in their test results on a test frequently used to diagnose dementia.[1]

Published in the peer-reviewed journal ‘Occupational and Environmental Medicine’, these findings support other research which suggests a link between the chronic use of pesticides in agriculture and the risk of neurological disorders. The research identifies France as “the highest user of insecticides and herbicides in Europe, and the fourth highest worldwide after the United States, Japan and Brazil”. What Are Pesticides

A pesticide is a poison that is designed to prevent, destroy, control or repell any pest such as weeds, spiders or insects. They come in the form of chemicals, disinfectants or biological agents. There are pesticides in your home if you have sprays, bombs, weed killers or mothballs in your cupboard.  All pesticides are potentially harmful. In May 2004, the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants determined that “10 of the 12 most dangerous and persistent organic chemicals are pesticides”.[2]

Alzheimers Disease

German psychiatrist and neuropathologist, Alois Alzheimer, was the first to identify Alzheimer’s disease in 1906. Since then, at least 500 clinical trials have been conducted into the aetiology of the disease which have resulted in several hypotheses still to be confirmed. There were 26.6 million people world wide with Alzheimers in 2006 and it is predicted that by 2050, 1 in 85 people will be affected in some way. Alzheimers mostly affects people over the age of 65 but can have an early onset in some cases. Early symptoms may include the difficulty in recalling recent events and it can go undetected for several years. Symptoms may quickly deteriorate to confusion, irritability and aggression, mood swings, disorientation, long-term memory loss and a general withdrawal as the senses decline. There is also a gradual loss of bodily function.[3]

Following diagnosis, the mean life expectancy is approximately seven years. Research shows that very few diagnosed individuals live more than fourteen years.[3]

Prevention

Research is continuing into the prevention of Alzheimer’s Disease, and while there is no definitive evidence to support prevention, it is suggested that there are a number of activities an individual can undertake to possibly reduce their risk factors. These include:

Diet - components of a Mediterranean diet including fruit and vegetables, cereals, olive oil, fish, bread, wheat and red wine may reduce the risk and course of Alzheimer’s disease. A 21-year study concluded that individuals who drank 3-5 cups of coffee per day at midlife reduced their rist of conracting dementia in late-life by up to 65%.[3]

Intellectual activities – Individuals who regularly play board games, read, play an instrument, tackle different kinds of puzzles or have an active social life are said to be at a lower risk of Alzheimers disease than people who do not undertake these activities.[3]

Diabetic Medicine recently published a placebo-controlled, double-blind crossover study that evaluated the effects of dark chocolate on weight and glycemic control and cholesterol levels in 12 patients with type 2 diabetes on stable medication. Two groups were ramdomly selected.  The first group was given 45 grams of 85 percent dark chocolate to eat per day for 8 weeks and the second group was given placebo which contained no cocoa solids but was dyed the same color as the dark chocolate.

When the 8 week trial had concluded, both groups undertook a 4 week washout period and then crossed over to the opposite group for a second 8 week period. The results revealed that none of the participants gained weight despite eating 45 grams of chocolate per day. Furthermore, no change in their overall diabetes control was detected. Researchers did discover however, that HDL cholesterol (the good cholesterol) increased significantly when the subjects ate dark chocolate on a daily basis. A decrease in the total cholesterol: HDL ratio in the dark chocolate group was also found. Researchers suspect that the high polyphenol content in dark chocolate is responsible for the positive results observed in this study. Although this was a relatively small study, it appears that chocolate in moderation is not harmful and may actually offer significant benefits.¹

Given the incredible health improvements I have experienced since taking activated liquid zeolite on a daily basis, and the fact that I would rather spend my money on zeolite, I started soaking my little finger directly in some liquid zeolite whenever I remembered.  To my amazement, within a few weeks, the fungus had changed from being throbbingly painful to completely gone.

South Africa produces 2.7 million cartons of canned pineapple per year and exports 2.4 million. In 2007, IOL, the South African news site, reported finding high levels of the toxic heavy metal cadmium in South African pineapples after farmers unknowingly used zinc sulphate fertiliser contaminated with this trace element. Traces of arsenic and lead were also found in fertiliser samples on further testing.

Zinc sulphate is used extensively in the agricultural regions of South Africa for a wide variety of crops destined for the market place, both locally and internationally. Following the discovery of high levels of heavy metals in the fertilizer, while it was reported that nobody actually died due to the contamination, it was the farmers who suffered the most. They endured huge financial losses and were outraged that their department of agriculture would allow the importation of contaminated fertiliser from China. Some farmers were forced to leave their crops to simply rot. Legal action was eventually taken against the fertiliser suppliers and representatives of the industry were required to travel all over the world to explain the crisis and what was being done to ensure that their lucrative international markets were not lost.

It is unclear if any of the contaminated canned pineapple pallets reached the shores of Australia, although one would hope that the strict Australian quarantine laws would go some way to protect us. Consumers of canned pineapple and other goods, however, while facing the unknown possibility of heavy metals, pesticides and herbicides lurking in our produce, are also faced with another dilemma, the possibility that lead may be leaching into the product from the can itself. Consumers will occasionally find an imported can that has been lead soldered instead of welded where leaching is possible. You can tell if a can is soldered or welded by looking at the seam. Only buy canned food where the can has a welded flat seam which is thin and dark with a well defined line along the joint.

What Is Zeolite?

Zeolite is a mineral that is formed when volcanic lava and ash meets the sea. The lava and ash flow into fresh and salt water and form minerals which have open spaces in them, such as you would see in a honeycomb or cage like structure. In an interview, Dr Rik Deitsch, a world leading biochemist, said that a zeolite “is created by aluminum and silica that are trapped in small tetrahedra created by oxygen atoms. These form 8-sided and 10-sided rings that stack on top of each other to form channels” which make up the cage.[1] There are about 40 naturally occurring zeolites which are negatively charged so they attract and trap into themselves, positively charged atoms, ions, and compounds, and can remove them safely from the body. It is believed that zeolite has been used for over 800 years in traditional medicine in India, China and throughout Russia and Asia. Zeolite is also used in water and river filtration, animal feed and even in some fertilizers to enhance crop health. Dr Deitsch says that for all practical purposes, zeolite is an invincible molecule.[1]

What Happens After Mining?

When zeolite is mined, laboratory testing has shown that it contains heavy metals and toxins from its natural environment, including elements of the mining process itself, such as particles of diesel from trucks at the minesite. In order for zeolite to be made suitable for human consumption, it is essential that it be thoroughly cleaned through a sophisticated cleansing process, so that no moulds, bacteria or heavy metals will be present in the cage. What Is Macular Degeneration?

Macular Degeneration is a condition that affects the macula part of the retina of the eye resulting in a disturbance to central vision. eMedicineHealth reports that “it is the macula that allows humans to see 20/20, or an eagle to spot a small rodent on the ground hundreds of feet below”.[2] It is believed that deterioration of the retina causes macular degeneration which results in a breakdown in the transmission of signals to the brain from the nerves and receptors of the eye that transmit light signals to the optic nerve. This results in a loss of the detail that allows us to read, recognise people, perform manual work or manage fine tasks such as threading a needle.  A person with macular degeneration may experience blurred or decreased central vision, blind spots, wavy lines instead of straight and size distortion.

There are two types of macular degeneration, wet and dry.

The onset of wet macular degeneration occurs when abnormal blood vessels, which have grown under the centre of the retina, bleed or leak and scar the retina. Macula damage may occur rapidly. It is not uncommon for wet macular degeneration to start in one eye and effect the other at a later time.

Dry macular degeneration, which is the most common form, results from a gradual breakdown of cells in the macula leading to blurring of central vision. The onset of dry macular degeneration can be detected early by an optometrist by the presence of small, yellowish spots, called drusen, at the back of the eye.  However, people who have drusen, may have no visual impairment or related symptoms. When dry macular degeneration advances due to prolonged, accumulative wasting in the retina and nerves, it is know as ‘geographic atrophy’ which is the main cause of vision loss in dry AMD.

Macular degeneration is treated by laser surgery, photodynamic therapy where a drug is injected that destroys newly formed, abnormal blood vessels or injections, however, none of these treatments can restore the vision that has already been lost.

Risk factors

There are a number of identified risk factors associated with AMD. Family history and age are thought to be the most common risk factors. People with outdoor occupations and continuous exposure to sunlight may be at risk, particularly if their skin is lightly pigmented. Women seem to be at a greater risk. There are also environmental and behavioural factors such as smoking and obesity. Some medications may also increase the risk of developing macular degeneration.[2] Research cited below also shows that a build up of toxic heavy metals can damage eye health.

Research

The National Institute of Health and the National Eye Institute in the US, published the results of a random study of people with moderate and advanced AMD in the Archives of Opthalmology in 2001, entitled the Age-Related Eye Disease Study. The study reported that a significant slowing of disease progression and preservation of sight could be achieved by taking dietary supplements containing high-dose antioxidants and zinc.[3]

Research published by Erie et al in 2005 in the American Journal of Opthalmology, measured the concentration of toxic heavy metals in the fluids and tissues of human eyes. Concentrations of lead, cadmium, mercury, and thallium in ocular tissues, ocular fluids, and blood were found in the autopsy of 30 eyes from 16 subjects. The study concluded that “lead and cadmium accumulate in human ocular tissues, particularly in the retinal pigment epithelium and choroid”.[4] Further study into the toxicity of these heavy metals and their possible role in eye disease was recommended.

What Can We Do?

In addition to the medical treatments mentioned above, there are a number of common sense things we can do to help prevent the onset of macular degeneration.

In order for high-dose antioxidants and zinc to be effectively absorbed into the body and to protect the eyes from heavy metals, it is firstly essential to detoxify the body with Activated Liquid Zeolite. What are Heavy Metals?

It is difficult to define the term ‘heavy metal’ as definitions can vary based on density, weight, chemical properties or toxicity (which is the measure of how harmful a substance can be to an organism). However, Life Extension defines heavy metals as “chemical elements with a specific gravity that is at least 5 times the specific gravity of water … including arsenic, 5.7; cadmium, 8.65; iron, 7.9; lead, 11.34; and mercury, 13.546″.[2]

What we do know is that heavy metals of different kinds are found in our ecosystem and that some contribute to devastating health challenges. Research has shown that the average person has at least 125 heavy metals in their bodies at any given time and that heavy metals can be transferred from mother to baby. Some of the heavy metals that are known to cause serious health challenges such as cancer as described below.

Lead is a highly toxic metal found in some products that we purchase and also in our environment. While its use has been dramatically reduced, it can still be found in lead based acid batteries or paints, lead contaminated dust and residential soils and possibly in our drinking water through corrosive plumbing materials. Lead, even in small quantities, can be very dangerous to our health resulting in damage to the brain, kidneys, nervous system and red blood cells.

Arsenic is released into the atmosphere from manufacturing processes, rat poisons, fungicides and wood preservatives. Like Lead, Arsenic may also be found in water supplies and seafood. Deposits of Arsenic in the body can affect the blood, kidneys, and central nervous, digestive, and skin systems.

Mercury is produced by mining and other industries and is also released into the atmosphere from volcanic emissions. While its use has been under scrutiny for many years, it is still used in thermometers, thermostats, and dental amalgam.  Inhalation of Mercury is the most frequent cause of exposure. Mercury poisoning can lead to nausea, vomitting, diarrhea and severe kidney damage.

Cadmium is, like Mercury,  produced by mining and other industries. It can be found in nickel-cadmium batteries, PVC plastics, and paint pigments as well as in agriculture. It may also be found in cigarettes and reservoirs containing shellfish. Exposure to Cadmium can lead to damage of the liver, placenta, kidneys, lungs, brain, and bones.

How do Heavy Metals Contribute to Serious Illness?

The presence of heavy metals in the body may lead to genotoxicity which means that the genetic material of a cell is compromised. Cells affected in this way may become mutated or carcinogenic which may contribute to the development of tumours. When a cell is affected in this way, it is unable to accurately replicate itself and spreads mutations of the original cell throughout the body. The presence of mutated cells in the body may increase the risk of cancer. Further to this, research has shown that genotoxins may be passed down to descendants if the sperm and eggs were exposed.[3]

The fundamental metabolic functioning of the body is also challenged through genotoxicity.  In particular, by accumulation of heavy metals in the cells and tissues, vital organs are affected including the heart, bone and liver etc. It is also thought that the presence of heavy metals displaces vital nutritional minerals and disturbs enzyme activity which results in metabolic disturbances.[4] Many heavy metal toxins are also fat soluble and settle in fatty parts of the body such as the brain and hormonal glands. Picture this! You are sitting on your porch in your favourite chair in your senior years, reflecting on the tapestry of your life. Are you sitting in the sun with a huge smile on your face because you have lived your life to the full and allowed yourself to take the road less travelled, or are you slumped and miserable because your dreams always seemed to pass you by and you feel like you have missed out or not fulfilled your purpose? Did you have a dream to start with?

Many Australians will remember our 22nd Prime Minister, Malcolm Fraser, advising us that life was not meant to be easy, however, he was only telling half the story. The original quote from George Bernard Shaw was “Life was not meant to be easy, my child, but take courage : it can be delightful”.[1]

Following the road that takes us out of our comfort zone is usually the road that leads to greater fulfillment. For example, Bill Gates dropped out of college to start Microsoft [2], Mother Teresa, an Indian Catholic nun, founded the Missionaries of Charity in Kolkata and ministered to the sick, poor, destitute and dying, while expanding her mission throughout India and the world [3] and Nelson Mandela, who served 27 years in prison for sabotage, went on to facilitate negotiations that led to multi-racial democracy in South Africa in 1994.[4] We might not be that famous but having the courage to say yes to the opportunities that arise in our lives takes tremendous trust and self confidence.

When it comes to taking the plunge, many of us are crippled by a fear of the unknown. A motivational speaker once said, FEAR is only ‘Fanciful Events Appearing Real’. Those of us who have taken the plunge had to very quickly change our FEAR into a more positive light -’Fabulous Energy And Respect’. Part 2 of this series gives some great tips on how to overcome fear. Or it may be, that like me, you are forced to take the next step.

For as many years as I can remember, I have had the words “go to India and work with children” passing through my mind. At times, it would be a faint murmur but at other times, I would be in tears at the thought of never fulfilling that dream. Even though it was agony at times, at the core of my being, I was fairly certain that I would never trust myself enough to actually let myself go to India and work with children. However, events conspired and my long term and permanent position at a prominent West Australian university was made redundant. At 54 years of age, I had run out of excuses not to go. After speaking to my friends about my plans, one of them said that even talking to me made him nervous because he needed security I was about to leave security behind to follow my bliss.

As the plane started its decent into Indira Gandhi Airport in New Delhi, I had a minor panic attack. What did “go to India and work with children” actually mean? What on earth was I doing? I seriously needed my mother at that moment!

Three years later, I now support a wonderful School and Children’s Home called Balmaitri Shishu Sansthan in the foothills of the Himalayas in northern India at a place called Diuli, about 30 kilometers north of Rishikesh in the state Uttarakhand. I have found sponsors for 17 of the 40 children who live there. Another 80 children walk to school from the surrounding villages 6 days a week, some walking as far as 10 kilometers a day. To date, I have raised about A$15,000 to support the school and have a wonderful relationship with the founder Mr Rishi Kumar, the staff and the children.

Balmaitri is now my home away from home and in hindsight, the experience turned out to be far less fearful than I originally thought. In fact, just yesterday, I received an envelope filled with drawings, letters and gifts from the children for their sponsors. It gives me so much joy to know them and to be a part of their family.

You are responsible for your own happiness and it is really up to the individual to develop the  physical and mental habits that lead to sustainable health and happiness. No-one else can do it for you! Here are a few tips for developing a healthy mental attitude to life.

1. The Importance of a Positive Mental Attitude

Have you ever been asked if you are a ‘glass half full’ or a ‘glass half empty’ person? What this question means is do you see the world optimistically (half full) or pessimistically (half empty)? If you are a ‘glass half full’ person, you will be able to identify the possibilities in any given situation. You will see the good that has already happened and be able to identify solutions for the difficulties you may be facing. You will gladly take responsibility for what happens in your life and feel confident in your ability to move forward in the best possible way. To the contrary, the ‘glass half empty’ person will move through the world as a victim, blaming everyone and everything other than him/herself for every situation in life. They will not be able to clearly problem solve as they feel they have little control or influence over their life situations and surroundings. They will look for the worst and will generally find it.

A great Indian sage once said “Send a happy man out to find a sad man and he will not be able to find one.  Send a sad man out to find a happy man and he will not be able to find one”. Which attitude do you think would lead to living a happier life, the glass half full or the glass half empty? If you feel you see the glass half empty, it is possible to change the way you view the world. The following 4 points contain tools that might help you to see the world in a more positive light. Our mental attitude is critical to living a happier life.

2. Self Talk

Do you ever stop to listen to how you talk to yourself? Most of us would never speak to anyone else in the same way we speak to ourselves. We are all guilty of telling ourselves negative untruths. We are our worst critic. Transactional Analysis tells us that “we each have internal models of parents, children and also adults, and that we play these roles with one another in our relationships. We even do it with ourselves, in our internal conversations”.[1] In this model, the ideal line of communication is that of adult to adult, where the talk is reasonable and assertive. However, a large proportion of our self talk is generally critical parent to child.

You can train your self talk to become more adult, firstly, by just noticing what you say and then changing it. Take time to listen, as dispassionately as possible, to how you are speaking to yourself and endeavour to make your self talk more encouraging and far less critical. Secondly, speak in the positive and try to avoid words such as can’t, impossible, wouldn’t and all forms of name calling. Replace them with ‘I can try’, ‘it might be possible’ or ‘maybe it will’ … This will change your focus from the negative, where solutions may not be available, to the positive where you might just succeed. Affirmations are also a good way to change self talk. “Positive affirmations and positive thinking techniques can help develop a powerful and positive attitude to life which is an essential element in life success and good health”.[2] Leave yourself positive and supportive notes around the house and practice writing positive statements. A person who values and respects themselves will live a happier life than a person who doesn’t.

3. Become a Listener More Than a Talker

Myers-Briggs is a personality test where, by answering a series of questions, you can get some inside information on how you move through the world. The dichotomies of the model include Extraversion (E), Intraversion (I), Sensing (S), Intuition (N), Thinking (T), Feeling (F), Judgement (J) and Perception (P). My result was INFJ. The point is, that regardless of your personality type, there is so much value in becoming a listener more than a talker. Some personality types tend to need to have their opinion heard. They may often dominate a conversation and show a lack of interest in anything that anyone else says. You may have experienced waiting for a pause so you could offer your opinion but in reality, there was no point because no-one heard what you said. You feel frustrated, undervalued and exhausted and will most likely want to run at the first opportunity. Also, how often have you told something to someone and they immediately talk about their own experience without acknowledging what you just said? They take it away from you and it feels deflating and annoying. We all want to be heard.

I’m not suggesting you become a doormat, but if you want to live a happier life, say less and try to become an active listener. Why? There are many reasons why listening, rather than forcing your opinion, is important. Your conversations will be less stressful as you show respect to others by listening to their opinion. Others will want to speak with you because they feel heard. Your confidence will grow because you have developed the skills to really listen. You will learn more. You will feel your contribution is valued because people will ask for it.

To show that you are listening, ask open ended questions which don’t call for a yes/no answer, paraphrase what the person has just said, ask about feelings, ask what happened next. In general, have an attitude that the conversation is about their experience, not yours. You will live a happier life when you listen more!

4. The Power of Meditation

Meditation is one of the most powerful tools to bring happiness into your life. Find a quiet place and make the commitment to yourself to sit in meditation for 1 hour a day for at least a week. Be sure the spine is straight, the eyes closed and the body relaxed. If you persist using 100% devoted concentration, benefits will come in time. Why not experiment and have some fun with it!

The first benefit of regular meditation is that you increase your powers of concentration which will filter through to every aspect of your life. Concentration means to focus the mind with interest and determination on any one thought or action. Beginning meditators usually focus on watching the breath. When your mind wonders (and it will), bring it gently back to the thought or action you are focused on. In time, you will be able to sustain your concentration for longer periods of time and will begin to slow your heart rate, giving that most vital organ a rest. As a consequence, the breath will slow and bodily restlessness will decrease. Feeling that inner calmness results in a closer and more confident relationship with yourself thus bringing more happiness into your life.

5. Be at Home With Yourself

If you struggle to get along with yourself, it makes sense that you will struggle to get along with others. Those who find fault in others, usually find fault in themselves as well. There is little evidence of inner harmony in people who do not have a gentle and nurturing relationship with themselves. Those who cannot find peace in their own hearts will struggle to find it anywhere else. The trick is to finish the internal war and bring harmony into your relationship with yourself. Your breath will flow and your body will be healthy if your bodily organs are working in harmony. Mental harmony will come when the mind sorts the good and useful thoughts from the useless thoughts.  When wrong thinking is banished forever, you can expect to find an inner and outer harmony in all aspects of your life. “There is not a single problem in life you cannot resolve, provided you first solve it in your inner world”.[4]

Finally …

There are a number of tips here for your consideration. Perhaps you might like to experiement with some of the suggestions. The first thing to remember is that you are responsible for your own happiness. Most people would agree that while having a loving partner and supportive family, wonderful job and exciting friends are critical aspects of life, it is really up to the individual to develop their own physical and mental habits that lead to sustainable health and happiness. No-one else can do it for you! Here are a few physical tips for your consideration.

1. Detoxify the Body

Being happy when you are sick seems almost impossible as illness can be all consuming. We have all experienced those episodes when we were so ill, we didn’t know what to do with ourselves. Detoxifying the body of heavy metals and toxins, in my view, should be number one on our “how to live a happier life” list because, simply put, heavy metals and toxins cause disease. If you want to be well, you need to detox on a regular basis. 2. Get Off The Couch

We all work so hard these days and a large percentage of us get home and flop on the couch, staying there from the news at 6pm till about 9pm watching the television. With an estimated 10,150,000 televisions in our homes, statistics show that the average Australian spends 22 hours in front of the television per week living their lives vicariously through soapies. Australians are 7th in the world in terms of time spent in front of the TV with the United Kingdom and the Unites States at equal first – 28 hours per person per week. [1] In fact, two sisters in Sydney, New South Wales, Joanne and Alanah Argyrou, 22 and 24, set a new world record on Thursday 17 June after watching 87 hours of uninterrupted television during the world cup.[2] I am not sure if that is something to be proud of. There is a beautiful world out there just waiting to be explored.  Rest and relaxation are a critical part of life and there are so many enjoyable things you can do.  Buy a kayak, go fishing, join a team, play golf, go dancing, join a choir or find an interest that gets you “off the couch”.

3. Breathe Deeply

Our breath is an incredibly powerful healing mechanism. Science tells us that a big percentage of toxins are expelled by breathing. Most of us have automatically taken shallow breaths during most of our life. The importance of deep breathing is one of the first things you will learn in a yoga or health improvement class. Expand your breathing and allow more oxygen into your lungs to live a happier life. Further to this, there is no need for me to labour the call to exercise as we all know how important exercise is to our lung capacity and to our well being. How many people do you know who say they feel happier and healthier now that they have joined a gym or bought a dog that they regularly take for walks, or started cycling to work a few times a week? As much as we might not want to hear it, exercise really does makes you feel happier. It helps with stiff and sore joints, it gets you interacting with others, it lets the sunshine and fresh air into your lungs and you feel better about yourself because you are finally making an effort for your own sake.  Deep breathing and exercise are critical keys to living a happier life.

4. Drink More Water and Less Alcohol

“Next to oxygen, water is the most important nutrient to the human body! Yet 75% of Australians are chronically dehydrated and fail to consume enough water for adequate hydration”.[3]  Approximately 60% of the human body is made up of water including the cells, tissues and organs.  Water plays the critical role of:

• “Regulating body temperature
• Removing waste from the body
• Carrying nutrients, oxygen and glucose to the cells to give the body energy
• Providing natural moisture to skin and other tissues
• Cushioning joints and helping to strengthen muscles
• Keeping stools soft”.[3]

The sign of thirst is a sign of dehydration. It is important to drink 6-8 glasses of water a day as an adult or 4-6 glasses or water a day as a child to minimise the risk of dehydration.

So what role does alcohol play in dehydration? Alcohol is a known diuretic which encourages the body to lose more water than it takes on. Alcohol may also attack our stores of vitamins and minerals, causing an imbalance in the normal functioning of the body. There may be a reduction in potassium in the body, which may lead to thirst, muscle cramps, dizziness and faintness.  Enjoy your alcoholic beverage with a glass or two of water in between and keep your long term goal of sustained happiness in mind.

5. Eat Well and Fast Occasionally

Most of us know at least some of the dangers of consuming too much fast food including an increased body mass index (BMI) and obesity, diabetes, heart disease, low fiber intake and food poisoning just to name a few. According to the Massachusetts Medical Society Committee on Nutrition, obesity is the second leading cause of preventable death in the United States and results in 400,000 deaths each year. They report that the American health care bill is said to increase by $93 billion a year because of obesity.

Excessive calories are another issue with fast food. For example, a standard hamburger with large fries and a large Coca-Cola is about 1,430 calories. “A diet of approximately 2,000 calories is considered a healthy amount of calories for an entire day (which is different depending on several factors such as age, weight, height, physical activity and gender)”.[4] The Trivia Library reported that Ireland has the greatest calorie intake of any country in the world at 3,410 per day per person, with Australia in 7th place with 3,280.  The US is 3rd with an average of 3,330 calories per day per person.[5]

To live a happier life, it is recommended that fast food be kept to a minimum.  Try to achieve the recommended 2 fruit and 5 veg a day. Steam your vegies instead of boiling them and eat as much raw and non processed food as possible. Cut down your intake of sugars and starches. In addition, why not consider fasting one day a week on water and fruit juice. This will give all the organs of your body a rest and a chance to rejuvenate. You may even feel better for it.

The call came from a civil protection official to Hanna Lara Andrews, a half-English, half-Icelandic farmer who lived on a farm at the base of the mountain which was about to explode.  She had only 20 minutes to evacuate her entire family for fear of the devastating effects of torrents of meltwater that were expected to flow onto her property from the mountain that loomed high above.

Can you imagine the fear that the people of the district surrounding the volcano must have felt on the night the mountain exploded?  This event also showed how fragile humanity is against a giant that could close most of the airspace in Europe, inconveniencing millions of travellers.  An initial shutdown of air travel occurred over much of northern Europe from 15 April to 23 April. Other parts of European airspace were closed during the ensuing weeks, followed by Ireland, Scotland, Spain, Portugal, northern Italy, Austria and southern Germany.[2]

The Eyjafjallajokull volcano, which has a summit elevation of 1,666 metres and a crater 3-4 kilometers in diameter, is situated north of Skogar, about 5 kilometers from the Atlantic coastline.   A magma chamber under the mountain feeds the volcano which had lain dormant since 1821, that is until the night of 14 April, 2010.  Increasing seismic activity had been recorded since the end of 2009 which culminated in a small eruption, rated as 1 on the Volcanic Explosivity Index (VEI) on 20 March, 2010.  On 14 April, the second phase eruption occurred and by the morning of the 15th, eye witnesses claimed they could see an ash plume rising to about 9 kilometers high which equated to a 4 on the VEI.  A web camera, installed near the area, showed a plume of water vapour surrounded by a blueish haze caused by the emission of sulphurous gases.  The large quantities of dry volcanic ash lying on the groundcombined with surface winds to create an ash mist that reduced visibility to within a metre.

Health Effects of Lava and Ash

The volcanic ash collected near the Eyjafjallajokull volcano showed a silica concentration of 58%[3].  Inhalation of fine silica dust may lead to silicosis, bronchitis and on occasion, cancer as dust particles, which do not dissolve over time, become lodged in the Further to this, farmers were warned that the ash may become wet and compact, making farming and livestock grazing almost impossible.  lungs, thus reducing lung capacity. Water-soluble fluoride was also found in the ash.  Fluoride may be harmful to livestock that drink from contaminated streams and water sources, resulting in deadly renal and hepatic disorders. The Icelandic Food and Veterinary Authority recommended that, where possible, all livestock in ash effected areas, should be kept indoors.

The Swan River is a picturesque expanse of water running for 67 kilometers from its origin to the Indian Ocean at Fremantle Harbour.  The river originates from the Avon and Canning rivers with Melville Waters as their estuary.  The Swan and Canning rivers are salt water, tidal rivers which are ideal for sailing and exciting watersports.

As recently as the 1970s, the Swan River was used as a dumping ground for waste.  Some local councils and heavy industry were maintaining rubbish tips on the banks of the river or emptying fertilizer and other industrial wastes into the river.  These sites are still today being cleaned to remove the toxins that were left to leach into the river.  In July 1997, the Western Australian Government conducted a Water and Rivers Commission to ascertain the level of pollution in the rivers in Western Australia.  At that time, the Swan River was noted for its relatively clean water, however, blooms of microscopic algae was becoming more commonplace.

The Swan River Trust, established by the State Government in 1989, plans, protects and manages the river systems of Perth.  By the development of catchments areas and filtration systems and by educating both the community and businesses, the Swan River Trust is endeavouring to protect this majestic river from becoming unusable due to algae blooms and pollution.

Algal blooms are becoming quite common during the summer months which results in the death of many of the rivers fish species.  The blooms are caused by nutrients coming into the river from the use of fertilisers in catchment areas and farming activities along the banks of the river.  The accidental spillage of chemicals and sewage have also closed sections of the river from time to time.

In order for the Swan River to maintain its dynamic ecosystem, the Swan River Trust has implemented a number of initiatives to manage nutrients and pollutants in the river.  For example, the Brand Highway Nutrient Filter consists of cracked laterite (pea gravel) to adsorb soluble phosphorus and zeolite to adsorb ammonium (soluble nitrogen) as the water passes through.  Nutrient stripping wetlands have also been constructed at a number of strategic sites along the river.

The Swan Plain, through which the river runs, is basically made up of sand and Perth gardeners, through a variety of means to improve the soil, are inadvertently adding to the demise of the river. In particular, nitrogen and phosphorous from fertilizers and garden wastes often end up being washed into storm water drains that lead to the river.   It is essential to improve the soil as often as required and to ensure that the soil is water absorbent but this must be done in conjunction with efforts to protect the river.

Many people belonging to the Baby Boomer generation will most likely have a mouth full of Mercury tooth fillings.  It was the ‘done thing’ in those days.  If you are like me, your fillings will now be breaking down, allowing leakage and bacteria to take hold which often results in bridges and root canal surgeries.  There is also a chance that we are ingesting mercury vapour with every mouthful of food we chew.

Mercury tooth fillings have been used for around 150 years.  The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) website on dental amalgam suggests that “approximately half of a dental amalgam filling is liquid mercury and the other half is a powdered alloy of silver, tin, and copper”.[1] The alloy particles are bound together by Mercury to make them strong and durable.

The type of Mercury used in dental amalgam is called Elemental Mercury, which is known to release Mercury vapour that can be absorbed by the lungs on placement and removal of the filling and also when we chew.  Researchers state that the Elemental Mercury used in fillings is different and less toxic than Methylmercury which is found in some fish.  About 125 tons of Mercury per year is used by dentists in Europe with an average of 0.5 grams per filling.  An article published by the UK Daily Mail in June, 2008 suggested that 0.5 grams of Mercury in a pond would result in warnings about eating the fish that lived there.

FDA Findings

In 2008, the FDA warned that Mercury tooth fillings could be dangerous to our health.  They suggested that Mercury vapour is released when fillings are placed or removed or by the very action of chewing.  Once the vapour is released, it could easily be breathed into the lungs.  The FDA carried out a number of urgent reviews and in July 2009 classified amalgam fillings into Class II – moderate risk and a number of controls were put in place including labeling statements.

Specifically, the FDA recommended that the product labeling include:

• A warning against the use of dental amalgam in patients with Mercury allergy;
• A warning that dental professionals use adequate ventilation when handling dental amalgam; and
• A statement discussing the scientific evidence on the benefits and risk of dental amalgam, including the risks of inhaled mercury vapor.[1]

Dental Amalgam and Health

The UK Daily News article mentioned above, reported that people in Britain had about 8 million Mercury fillings each year.  The article described Mercury as “highly toxic and highly dangerous”.  Campaigners suggest that Mercury ingestion could lead to a number of illnesses including fatigue, depression, heart conditions and Alzheimer’s disease.[2]  Some research suggests that the mercury in fillings could also be linked to high blood pressure, infertility, and disorders of the central nervous system.  The article went on to report that Norway and Denmark had banned the use of Mercury in fillings earlier in 2008 and that Finland and Japan had imposed severe restrictions on its use.  Dentists themselves were found to have high levels of Mercury in their bodies and 500 practices in Britain refused to offer Mercury fillings.

What is the Ozone Layer?

According to NASA, “ozone is an irritating, corrosive colorless gas with a smell something like burning electrical wiring”.[1]  Up to 99% of the sun’s high frequency UV light, which is potentially damaging to life on earch, is absorbed by the ozone layer.  The ozone layer was first measured in 1956 at Halley Bay, Antarctica.  Measurements by satellite began in the 70’s by the Nimbus-7 satellite and this activity today is managed by several different satellites which measure concentrations of ozone and other atmospheric gases.  Weather balloons and some airplanes are also used to measure ozone.  It is reported that “every 1% decrease in the earth’s ozone shield is projected to increase the amount of UV light exposure to the lower atmosphere by 2%”.[1]

What is Damaging the Ozone Layer?

Chlorofluourcarbons (CFCs) were first created in 1928 as non-toxic, non-flammable refrigerants.  It was estimated in 1988 that over a billion kilograms of CFCs were being consumed worldwide because they were so desirable to industry.  These CFCs were found in solvents, air conditioning, refrigeration, aerosols and foams, some of which can remain in the atmosphere for up to 200 years. Sparling reports that “intense UV solar radiation severs chlorines off the CRCs and it is these unattached chlorines that are able to convert ozone molecules into oxygen molecules”.[2]  While the growth rate of CFCs in the atmosphere is dropping due to Government regulation and industry awareness, it is reported that the stratospheric ozone will continue to deplete well in the 22nd century.

How Is Life On Earth Effected?

• Of these 430,000 NMSC cases, an estimated 296,000 were Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) cases, and an estimated 138,000 were Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) cases, however the estimates may be greater as BCC and SCC cases are not legally required to be reported.
• In 2006, there were 410 reported deaths from NMSC.[3]

Other Skin conditions – Actinic keratoses and premature aging of the skin may also be attributed to an increase in UV radiation.  These are sometimes precursors to squamous cell carcinomas and should be checked immediately on detection.

Cataracts and eye damage – “Cataracts are a form of eye damage in which a loss of transparency in the lens of the eye clouds vision”.[4]  It is thought that increased exposure to UV rays are a major cause of cataracts.  Whilst cataracts can be easily treated by modern surgery, millions of people around the globe are affected and the cost for medical care each year is in the billions.  Macular degeneration and cancer of the skin around the eyes are also attributed to UV exposure.

What is Lead?

Wikipedia tells us that “Lead is a poisonous metal that can damage nervous connections (especially in young children) and cause blood and brain disorders. Like mercury, another heavy metal, lead is a potent neurotoxin that accumulates in soft tissues and bone over time”.[1]  When freshly cut, Lead is bright and silvery but it will rapidly tarnish to a dull luster in air. Lead is considered a heavy metal also called a toxic metal.

How Is Lead Used?

Lead is highly resistant to corrosion which makes it useful in building construction such as external coverings of roofing joints, pipes, solders and architectural metals.  It is also found in car batteries, ceramics, sinkers, stained glass, firearms, protection from radiation, coollant and PVC plastics such as that wrapped around electrical wires etc.  Fortunately, some of its common uses have now been phased out such as lead paint and leaded fuels.  In ancient Rome lead was used in plumbing, as a food preservative and as a sweetener for wine which may explain why so many of the Roman Emperors had dementia.

Lead paint is named as a major source of lead exposure for children.  Once lead paint has deteriorated, it enters the body through hand-to-mouth contact or through contaminated food, water or alcohol.  Lead can also be ingested through fruits and vegetables which have been grown in soil contaminated by high levels of lead.  “Soil is contaminated due to the lead in pipes, lead dust from old paints and residual lead from gasoline with lead that was used before the Environment Protection Agency issued a regulation against its use around 1980″.[1]

Another pathway for lead to enter the body is through inhalation from the atmosphere, especially for workers in lead-related occupations. Research has shown that almost all of inhaled lead is absorbed into the body and that children absorb more than adults. ‘It is rapidly absorbed into the bloodstream and is believed to have adverse effects on the central nervous system, the cardiovascular system, kidneys, and the immune system’.[1]

The third method of exposure is through the skin, however, this is not of much concern given today’s regulatory use of lead.

How Does Lead Affect Our Health

“Lead remains in the body for long periods in mineralizing tissue (i.e., teeth and bones)”[1] and it can affect almost every organ and system in the body. There may also be evidence of small increases in blood pressure, particularly in middle-aged and older people or signs of anemia. “Exposure to high lead levels can severely damage the brain and kidneys in adults or children and ultimately cause death”.[1]  It may also reduce fertility in men.  Long-term exposure to lead or its salts may cause nephropathy and abdominal pain. “It may also cause weakness in fingers, wrists, or ankles”.[1]

The widespread use of lead has been reduced due to concern about lead’s role in cognitive deficits in children and the possbility that it is related to learning disabilities.  “During the 20th century, the use of lead in paint was sharply reduced because of the danger of lead poisoning, especially to children”. “Between 2006 and 2007 many children’s toys made in China were recalled, primarily due to lead in paint used to color the product”.[1]

Now To The Good News

I have some great news for you! Most of us believed that the pencil lead found in wooden pencils was poisonous but Wikipedia assures us that the lead pencils we spent our youth chewing on and pretend smoking have never been made from lead. “When the pencil originated as a wrapped graphite writing tool, the particular type of graphite being used was named plumbago (lit. act for lead, or lead mockup)”.[1]

Current Research

Research undertaken jointly by Zhang from The University of Western Australia and Zhejiang University in China, found that eating mushrooms and drinking green tea may protect against breast cancer. Zhang reported that breast cancer was the most common type of cancer among women worldwide and that its rate was increasing in both developed and developing countries.  Interestingly, the incidence of cancer in China was four or five times lower than in developed countries.  The study hoped to show if this could be due to the use of dried and fresh mushrooms and green leaf tea in the traditional Chinese diet.  Mushrooms, mushroom extracts and green tea had shown anti-carcinogenic properties which were thought to stimulate immune responsiveness against breast cancer.

The consumption of mushrooms and green tea by 2,000 women, aged from 20 to 87 in relatively affluent southeast China, was monitored. Half of the women were healthy and the others had confirmed breast cancer. On interview, it was found that fresh white button mushrooms, Agaricus bisporus, and fragrant dried mushrooms, Lentinula edodes, were the most commonly eaten species of mushroom. Some of the women in the study consumed neither mushrooms nor green tea while others enjoyed both up to three times a day.

The results of the study showed that the combination of a dietary intake of mushrooms and green tea decreased breast cancer risk with an additional reduced effect on the malignance of cancer.  Zhang concluded that, if confirmed consistently in other research, this inexpensive dietary intervention may have potential implications for protection against breast cancer development.

Dr. W. J. Sinden from University of Pennsylvania and Dr. E. D. Lambert from Lambert Laboratories were the first to present their research results on the medicinal compounds of Agaricus blazei. They attracted the attention of the medical community to this mushroom.  Former President Ronald Reagan used this mushroom to fight his skin cancer, which helped publicise Agaricus blazei.

The Agaricus blazei mushroom is made up of Beta-(1-3)-D-glucan, Beta-(1-4)-a -D-glucan & Beta – (1-6)-D-glucan. What is Endosulfan?

Endosulfan is an organochlorine colourless compound that is used on crops as a tool to fight insect and mite invasions.  It is known as a highly controversial agrichemical due to its toxicity, its potential to accumulate in the crop, and its role as an endocrine system disruptor.  Studies have shown that endocrine system disruption has biological effects in animals, which indicates that low-level exposure might cause reproductive and developmental damage in human beings.  The product is widely used in Australia, India and Brazil but has been banned in 62 countries around the world including the European Union and several Asian and West African nations.[1]

History

Endosulfan has a very controversial history.  It was developed in early 1950 and in 1954 was given approval for use in the USA.  By 2000, home and garden use of the product was banned.  In 2002, the Environmental Protection Agency in the USA determined that Endosulfan residues on food and in water posed unacceptable risks, however, the product was still used agriculturally.  By 2007, the international community took steps to restrict the use and trade of Endosulfan. Bayer CropScience voluntarily pulled its Endosulfan products from the U.S. market but continued to export the product.  In 2009, New Zealand banned Endosulfan. The Stockholm Convention’s Review Committee agreed that Endosulfan was a persistent organic pollutant and deemed that global action was warranted, setting the stage for a global ban.[1]

Effects on Humans

As a race, no one wants to see to see other human beings living with devastating deformities.  The 60 Minutes cameras took us to beautiful Kerela in Southern India to a village which is situated right next to a large crop that was continuously sprayed with a derivative of Endosulfan over a five year period.  Here we could see young Indian people with horrendous deformities that a doctor confirmed, through scientific testing, was attributed to the chemical spray.  A young man in England, also featured in the program, was born without eyes and had brain damage.  His mum had used an Endosulfan spray on her garden during her pregnancy.

Effects on Animals

One of the most disturbing images in the documentary was Ms Gilson’s relatively young looking dog which appeared to be neurologically damaged and couldn’t stand up.  There was a pond full of dead fish and a pet cemetary where Ms Gilson had buried horses, dogs and other livestock.  We also saw microscopically that fish embryos in the Noosa River, near Ms Gilson’s farm, were developing with two heads.

Why is this of concern to us?

Everything we buy in packages must, by law, be labelled with all the ingredients.  What about the 2 fruit and 5 veg we endeavour to consume every day.  There is no labelling here and we have no idea what chemicals were used in the production of these products.  We are told that a large amount of the goodness of our fruit and veg is found in the skins and that eating the peel is a good practice.  What else is lurking in there?  What toxins and poisons did I ingest with that apple I ate this morning?

Four Things You Can Do?

We are not helpless in this situation.  There are clearly four things we can do to be proactive in protecting ourselves, our families and our pets from Endosulfan, its derivates and other dangerous chemicals that may be in our food.

When you look into the mainstream, we are led to believe that the solution to toxicity is to clean up the environment and wait for levels of toxicity to decrease. My question is – how will that ever be achievable when we live in such a toxic world and researchers are every day proving the relationship between our toxic environment and escalating health issues.

We are told that antioxidants cleanse the body of free radicals. Providing large quantities of vitamins and minerals also allows the body to cleanse as does colon cleanses and high fiber products. My daughter and son-in-law have used the urine tests and have seen the heavy metals disappear after using the zeolite. My son-in-law had a graphic demonstration of this. Head hair analysis is simply a chemical test performed on a sample of hair.  A piece of hair is sent to a testing laboratory where the hair is processed and analysed. Following are two Australian ‘real life’ stories with hair analysis results taken before and after using activated liquid zeolite.

Tony P – is a man who had extremely high lead levels. They were so high that his doctor advised that the use of EDTA chelation therapy might damage him permanently. He chose to use activated liquid zeolite and after 3 months showed a 6 fold decrease in lead levels. [4]

John G – is a man who puts everything to the test.  His hair analysis was carried out by a Sydney laboratory, first in July 2006 and then again in January 2007 after taking activated liquid zeolite.  John says that “when I received my first hair analysis, it was pretty good.  I had some Arsenic, Cadmium, Mercury, and Barium which was off the scale. I also showed low iron and copper levels”.[4]

John’s second hair sample sent to the same laboratory in January 2007 showed a great improvement after taking activated liquid zeolite. Iron levels improved and Mercury, Arsenic and Cadmium had markedly reduced. Most importantly John’s Barium level had dropped by 63% and was now in the normal range.  Low levels of Barium are important for a healthy heart.

(For the non technical amongst us, chelation therapy is a process that uses binding agents to draw wastes and toxic metals out of the bloodstream and tissues, however, it unfortunately takes the good with the bad).

The zeolite mineral has a lattice or honeycomb like structure which has a negative charge (minus 2).  This research has shown that metal ions have a strong affinity to the clinoptilolite lattice.  What this means in a simplier language is that the negative charge of the zeolite mineral attracts and captures the positively charged metal ions inside its honeycomb structure.  “In fact, numerous studies have shown that the affinity of clinoptilolite is quite high for some of the most toxic heavy metals”.[1]

Hair analysis tests suggest that, unlike conventional chelation therapy, activated liquid zeolite may not remove essential nutrients from the body along with the heavy metals and toxins.  Dr Rik Deitsch, on a recent international conference call, anecdotally suggested that activated liquid zeolite might in fact transport essential nutrients around the body.  An article describing these hair analysis results will be available shortly on this site called “Hair and There”.

The research goes on to say that “clinoptilolite can be fed to animals with beneficial effects” which “occur in the absence of any side effects, even with long-term zeolite supplementation”.[1]  It also suggests that “an increase in the excretion of heavy metals in subjects who consume clinoptilolite would be an indication that the natural chelating properties of this negatively charged mineral might have clinical applications in cases of metal accumulation and toxicity”[1].

It has only been recently that the medical community has weighed in on how important water is to normal body function.

We are comprised of mostly water; over 70% of our bodies are water. To break it down even further our brains are over 75% water, blood 80%, and the human liver which is our main filter is 96% water.

Our nervous system which is responsible for sending the electrical signals to every cell in our body is really a system of miniscule waterways. “Most people are not aware that certain chemicals and toxins are actually at a much higher level inside our homes,” writes Dr. Garrett Wdowin in an article on the Healthier Talk website.[1]

Dr. Wdowin balances that disturbing note with two suggestions that can help control the airborne toxins in your home.

The first suggestion is that chemical exposures inside our homes will be greatly decreased by removing our shoes at the door. Given all the places our feet touch on the outside and all the floor coverings they come into contact with on the inside, this suggestion makes good sense. The chemicals referred to are found on public bathroom floors or they are pesticides on the ground or oil residues on the road or in parking lots etc. Picking up these nasties on our shoes seems unavoidable and no-one would want their house to become a cocktail of all these chemicals and toxins.

Secondly, a very effective way to improve the air quality in our homes is to add certain types of plants. Studies were conducted by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to investigate which plants could help to remove toxic chemicals from the air for use in space stations. The findings from these studies show that the most efficient plants at filtering formaldehyde, benzene, and trichloroethylene are:

• Ficus (Ficus benjamina)
• Gerbera daisy (Gerbera jamesonii)
• Mass cane (Dracaena massangeana)
• Pot mum (Chrysanthemum morifolium)
• Warnecki (Dracaena deremensis “Warneckei”[1])

Plants in the home add beauty and decrease toxic exposure for the inhabitants and they are a very effective way improve air quality. It is recommended that at least one plant be placed in each room, not necessarily of the same variety, with more than one plant in rooms where we spend more time such as our bedrooms.

The idea of using plants in the home to help reduce toxins is further substantiated by the fact that some plants are used in research to test, and in some cases remove, toxicity in soil through a process called phytoextraction. For example, in his article ‘Phytoextraction: the use of plants to remove heavy metals from soils’, Nanda Kumar P. B. A. et al conclude that Brassica juncea, also known as mustard greens, Indian mustard and leaf mustard, may be used to clean up toxic metal-contaminated sites.[2]

While Dr Wdowin gives us great tips on how to reduce toxins in our homes, it is equally essential to remove toxins from our bodies. Research increasingly confirms the relationship between heavy metal toxicity and ill health. For example, research shows that the presence of lead, cadmium, arsenic, tin, aluminium etc in our bodies is a major factor in immune system deficiency which can lead to serious illnesses including headaches, unexplainable cardiovascular problems, anxiety, osteoporosis, autism and many others. As you know he was diagnosed the beginning of August with cancer that had spread to his lungs, bones, and bone marrow. He was hospitalized until Aug. 11th. during that stay he was given 8 units of blood plus platelets and a big chemo treatment.

His tumor marker went from 20 to 86 in a matter of 10 days so his cancer was very aggressive. Update Oct 31, 2008:

Dear Friends,

We came home from the Oncology Dr. today on cloud nine.  Carl is in total remission with a tumor marker at 0.7 and the CT scans showed no signs of cancer in his lungs, liver or anywhere else.  We only have to go to the doctor once a month now for blood work and the IV to repair the damage to his bones.

We are truly Blessed with a miracle.  To come to this diagnosis, from no hope with stage 4 terminal cancer at the end of July (prostate cancer, lung cancer in both lungs, bone and bone marrow cancer), to today in remission, is truly remarkable.  Carl is back up to his normal weight after dropping 35 lbs in just a matter of a few weeks.  He was in a wheelchair as he was too weak to walk.  Now he can do everything for himself and help with the care of the  livestock.   We thank God continually for the things He put on this  earth to make these miraculous products and for the intelligent, talented people who developed these supplements for us to use to heal and maintain our bodies.
