A lot of us assume that because we have acne, sunscreen is by far the WORST thing you could apply to your skin. This assumption is well founded considering sunscreens of the past we’re thick, greasy and would likely clog your pores. However, with all the attention on anti-aging, sun protection and sun awareness, there is a whole new kind of sunscreen being developed.

Sunscreen can now be light, non-comedogenic (meaning it won’t clog your pores) and can even be found in your moisturizer. At our Oakville acne clinic, one of our very favourite sunscreens is the Vivier Sunscreen Lotion 30SPF. It is super light-weight, moisturizes the skin and is great to use on acne prone skin. In fact, we’re so sure that it won’t make you break out; we use large pumps in all of our rooms to apply to patients’ skin after they have had an acne treatment or acne scars treatment.

We’ve spoken before about the importance of using mineral based, anti-bacterial makeup as a defense against breakouts. At our Oakville acne clinic we really love to use the Glominerals and Colorescience products. I like to think of them as being more than makeup, and actually an acne treatment because they have actually been shown to help heal and prevent breakouts. However, it is just as important to use the right tools in order to achieve or maintain clear skin. I will usually advise against applying makeup with your hands because of contamination and bacteria getting into the product as well as on your face. So using the appropriate tools is very important.

For concealer I will usually recommend a stiff, small and synthetic bristle brush. For pressed powder I love the Glominerals Kabuki brush. It is a natural, dense bristle brush that applies the makeup evenly and naturally. For liquid foundation I will often recommend the same type of synthetic brush as the concealer, but just larger. Lastly, blush tends to go on best with a natural and loose bristle brush so the colour is diffused naturally along the facial contours.

In order to keep your brushes clean and bacteria-free I recommend using an alcohol-free brush cleaner anywhere from 1-3 times a week. People who follow the clean-brush rule will be much less likely to find themselves breaking out after wearing the makeup that is supposed to be concealing!

We know that clean skin with the proper preparation including cleanser, sunscreen and an at least one active product, can be the key to having clear skin. But it is a misconception that cleansers that over-dry or strip the skin will reduce breakouts. In fact, patients that wash their skin more than two times a day can actually be making the problem worse. As with many things, sometimes less is more.

That is why at our acne clinic we will often recommend microdermabrasion for patients that experience mild acne breakouts. As an acne treatment it gets rid of all the junk that lies deep within your skin. Sometimes skin cells can build up on the surface of the skin, which ultimately blocks the pore and causes you to break out. Microderm uses a diamond tip which gently exfoliates off those dead skin cells without over drying the skin like some other forms of exfoliation. Also, because it is performed by a nurse, the treatment is also very controlled and gives an instant boost and glow to the skin! Bonus!

As we all know, there are so many things that are used to treat acne. You can order from the television, you can go to the pharmacy; or you can visit your family doctor, just to name a few. So how does our acne clinic provide the greatest overall result to our patients who are wishing to improve the look of their skin?

It all begins with having a top dermatologist in his field to work in conjunction with the very best team of nurses to make recommendations, do assessments and perform acne treatments. Then we bring all of the greatest technologies, acne laser treatments and products under one roof so we can tailor design a treatment for each one of our patients.

Not one treatment works for everyone, which is why we decided that we would have to have every viable treatment so we can attain our goal of getting our patients better. Now how do you like that for a goal?

At our acne clinic patients are thrilled when they have got a handle on their breakouts, but can still be affected by scars from previous eruptions. Cynergy laser is one of the many great acne scars treatments that work to reduce discolouration and visible acne scarring.

Cynergy or V-star laser is a quick and simple treatment that can be performed on a number of different skin types. It is extremely effective and patients can see visible improvement after only a few treatments. We have one of the biggest Before & After binders for the Cynergy laser as it is such a popular treatment and yields such positive results. I have included a picture of our pre and post photo book. Patients who come in for a free consultation are free to peruse all of these books, which can help you to choose the best treatment option.

For those of you who do not yet know us very well yet, or have not yet come into our acne clinic for a free consultation with the dermatologist and our specialized nursing staff…we would like to officially welcome you!

Every week I blog about new things that are happening in the office; whether it be new procedures, acne treatment, products or interesting and helpful facts. However, I have not yet introduced you to one of the most important people in our clinic! When you walk through our doors one of the people who you can almost certainly expect to see is Amanda. Amanda is an R.P.N and sees most of our Clear Choice patients. With her cheery disposition and friendly smile she makes appointments about often frustrating concerns a pleasure. One of the reasons that Amanda is the primary nurse who sees all of our acne patients is because of her obvious passion for helping people to achieve clear skin. Believe us, she is the first to say to her patients, “Don’t worry, we’re going to get you there, and I’m going to be there to help you do it!” We don’t call her the “acne queen” for nothing. She truly goes above and beyond to help her patients achieve clear skin and stay acne free. Amanda takes calls and emails from patients all day long, to clarify directions the doctor has given, to check in on acne laser treatments or acne scars treatments and sometimes just to see how you’re doing. These are the reasons why I wanted to blog about Amanda because of the amazing job that she does every day to help her patients to meet their goals.

There are many acne treatments that focus on clearing up visible blemishes. Whether it is topical or light therapies, many patients have concerns that extend beyond their acne. Smoothbeam is an effective acne laser treatment that not only kills acne deep within the skin, but also improves the overall tone and texture of the skin.

This treatment focuses on destroying excess sebum within the follicles, which in turn reduces the oiliness of the skin, pore size and can even act as a mild acne scars treatment. Bonus! So at our Oakville acne clinic we are able to kill four birds with one stone with a very simple and effective acne treatment. I have included a pre and post photo of a patient’s back that we treated.

How many times have you tried a new cream and then instantly breakout? So frustrating. So we get questions about this literally all the time. Things like, “I think my cream is too thick! Is it clogging my pores? Should I stop using what I have at home?” And what we will often suggest is bringing it back to the basics. If you cannot open your bathroom cupboards without being buried under a mountain of products, then listen up. Constantly changing the products you are using can be counterproductive. You really need to give your skin at least a week to fully adjust to the product you are using. If things are old or didn’t seem to work well for you in past, try to toss them so you can have a fresh start.

There are also so many products out there and it is difficult to identify which products would suit you unless you have had your skin closely analyzed. That is where our nurses and doctor comes in. So you are prepared for your free acne consultation, we need lots of information about your past history including products and prescriptions you have used. We will then ask you detailed questions to help understand how your skin functions on a month to month basis. Finally, after evaluating your skin in the clinic we can help you to find products that will be best suited to address the concerns that you have right now. If products are not how you wish to proceed, that is ok too. Acne treatments like Cynergy, Blu-u, chemical peels and Smoothbeam may be more up your alley in order to meet your goals. But the most important thing to know is we’re here to help get your skin back on track in any way we can.

Having enlarged pores is a problem that goes far beyond patients with acne. We know that patients with oily, acne prone skin are also likely to have enlarged pores on their nose, cheeks or chin. However, people with otherwise “normal” skin can also be plagued by enlarged pores.

What are enlarged pores caused from? Basically, when the follicle or pore fills with oil, it tends to become larger in appearance.

Smoothbeam laser treatments are a great option for not only battling acne breakouts, but can also be used to reduce pore size. Smoothbeam destroys excess sebum in the skin, and in turn, significantly improves the texture and look of pores.

It is a quick and simple procedure which requires little to no downtime. Patients are right back to school or work either same day or definitely the next.
