<itunes:summary>You should always try to get rid of acne in the natural way first, even if that means keeping the infected areas clean just by washing your face (neck or back) with water and mild soap.

When you’re stuck with acne, your main objective is to remove impurities clogging the pores. These impurities include dead skin cells mixed with sebum, the oily substance produced by sebaceous glands.

Doing this at least twice a day will hopefully clear your skin of the blackheads, whiteheads and pimples that make you wince each time you look in the mirror.

On the other hand, these mild forms of acne can become irritated if you leave them unchecked. That’s a sure sign bacteria is working their way to multitudes and already causing infection.

When this happens, the acne becomes pinkish or reddish, and traps fluids which all leads to swelling. If you feel that washing with soap and water is not enough, there are other, natural remedies that can help you clear your skin of acne.

See what regular user of witch hazel for acne has to say about it:

One plant-based remedy is witch hazel. Read this article and watch the video above to discover what is it about this plant that makes it so successful in treating acne!

Witch Hazel contains tannins and astringents
For many years, witch hazel has been known to be effective against acne. The two of its important components that make it ideal natural remedy for skin infections are tannin and saponin.

Saponin makes for effective cleansing because of its soapy action. Treatment always begins with cleaning the acne-infected parts of your body (be it face, neck or back).

Tannin, on the other hand, is known as an antiseptic. It has the ability to draw out skin irritants, which causes infection in these kinds of disorders.

At the same time, it helps reduce inflammation, especially with severe acne cases. Aside from acting as disinfectant, witch hazel also is an astringent.

Once impurities have been drawn out to and the pores have been unclogged, astringents work to make the skin contract, which effectively closes the pores and keeps the dirt and pollutants out.

Tannin, too, provides witch hazel anti-oxidant properties that prevent cellular damage. This way, you can keep acne away or at least prevent it from worsening. You get all these benefits from witch hazel without harmful chemicals that are otherwise added to other treatments prescribed for acne!

How to use Witch Hazel for acne treatment?

Unless you can find the actual plant and extract the juice, witch hazel is usually sold as liquid solution in the form of astringents or as creams (like Clear Skin MAX).

It is applied on the infected areas using cotton balls twice or thrice a day, depending on the severity of the acne being treated. You can apply witch hazel not only on the face, but in other areas where acne breaks out like the back, shoulders, chin or forehead.

Its efficacy to fight infection is evident since during the time of American Indians. They used it to treat bruises, swelling and sores until it was eventually discovered to control skin disorders like acne.

Witch hazel products are available in pharmacies. However, you must also be careful in choosing which kind to buy. Read the label. Go for the pure, distilled form. Some are mixed with alcohol and other harmful substances that may be harsh for your skin.

Ask the pharmacist whether an astringent or cream is better for your condition.

Clear Skin MAX contains Witch Hazel
Or you can opt for skin care products that use witch hazel as its ingredients. You'll discover one such product that uses this natural herbal remedy for acne once you check out Clear Skin MAX review.

<itunes:summary>Hormones tend to trigger acne breakouts because they stimulate the sebaceous glands to produce more sebum (oily substance) than your skin needs it for protection and hydration.

However, the worst form of acne (pustules and cysts) is not just the consequence of too much sebum. It is actually the result of bacterial infection.

And antibiotics are oftentimes used to eliminate the source of infection, the bacteria known as Propionobacter acne (P. acne). Keep reading to discover more on how antibiotics are used for acne treatment.

Why you need to be careful with using antibiotics for acne:

Antibiotics can help treat severe acne caused by bacterial infection

As you may know, blackheads and whiteheads form before bacteria multiplies to runaway levels (you can check out What is acne? for details).

These mild forms of acne are basically caused by pieces of dead skin mixed with sebum, which haven’t been properly expelled due to clogged follicles.

However, if not treated immediately they may eventually become infected and turn into pustules and cysts: those painful, red, swollen forms of acne that often contain fluid. And that’s when you have to seriously consider taking antibiotics.

Don’t go rushing to the pharmacy just yet. You still need to consult a dermatologist on how best to go about with this treatment.

You can get antibiotics for acne in oral or topical form

Antibiotics to treat acne come in topical or oral forms.

The severity of your skin disorder will determine the type of antibiotic that should be taken or applied to reduce swelling, kill the bacteria (or prevent it from multiplying) and restore your skin’s natural condition (hopefully with minimal damage).

If the inflammation is mild to moderate, topicals may just do the job. You can find topical antibiotics for acne in the form of creams, lotions, gels and other solutions that are applied to the acne itself.

When topicals don’t work, doctor may prescribe oral antibiotics to target the acne-causing bacteria. These may have infected more than just the localized area where the acne has popped out.

There are also cases when you will need both topical and oral antibiotics to effectively get rid of severe types of acne.

It takes time for antibiotics to start working

Whether it is topical or oral, don’t expect your condition to miraculously improve overnight. It will take several days (often even months) to see any improvement. But the important thing is to keep it from getting worse.

You can notice the first signs of healing when you feel less pain in the infected areas. Swelling, too, should subside as well as the redness.

Treat acne with antibiotics only when everything else fails

You resort to antibiotics because everything else has failed to treat your severe acne condition.

Since drugs affect people differently, it is actually impossible to predict how antibiotics for acne will work on you. It is not uncommon for one person to respond favorably to one type of antibiotic, while getting negative or no reaction from another.

When the environment is ideal, bacteria multiplies rapidly and your acne gets worse. In order to treat such conditions, you need powerful drugs in order to kill the acne causing dirt.

While antibiotics can stop the growth of bacteria (or eliminate the existing ones), strong antibiotics are also known to target “good” bacteria, thereby destroying their balance in the body and produce certain side effects, which are not necessarily pleasant.

One other disadvantage of antibiotics is that your body develops immunity to them if used often. Once this happens, the next time you have another severe acne breakout, you may need a stronger kind of antibiotic to fight off the bacteria, one that may produce even more side effects.

Get to know your acne antibiotics to reduce possible side effects

The most commonly prescribed antibiotics for skin application are mupirocin,</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>A pimple on your nose is bad enough. A blackhead or whitehead even worse. But a cyst – the worst kind of acne – all red and swollen, is a nightmare!

What you’ve got is some form of acne, which is a result of infection due to bacteria breeding in your skin. Even the most modest person wants to get rid of any form of acne.

Of course, the best way is to prevent acne from breaking out in the first place. That means minimizing conditions that will lead to breakouts. And water plays an important role in this.

How water helps your body and skin:

Cleaning your skin with water is cruical for clear and acne-free skin

Acne, indirectly, is caused by overactive hormones. Androgens, specifically, which is a male hormone, but is also present in females only in lesser quantities.

Hormonal activity influences the production of sebum, the oil from sebaceous glands that coats follicles found at the end of skin pores.

The skin needs sebum as protection. One of its important functions is to trap moisture in the skin cells to keep it soft and smooth.

Dehydrated skin contracts and thus becomes dry and prone to breaking. Acne, however, is a result of an overproduction of sebum. This occurs with hormonal over-activity, such as during puberty, pre-mestrual period, or even in stressful situations.

During these times, you can notice how your skin, including the scalp, becomes oilier. The glands respond to raging hormones by producing more oil than is needed. Too much sebum allows bacteria to thrive.

Your skin collects dirt and other pollutants regularly and unless you keep it clean and healthy, you are a candidate for acne. Cleaning is especially important in the face and other areas where sebaceous glands are most dense. This includes the neck, shoulders, chest and back.

By drinking water you flush the toxins out of your body

When the body is unable to elimate waste products efficiently and regularly, these accumulate and become toxins. The liver and the kidneys have the primary function of excreting waste. Liver breaks down fat and kidneys flush out waste by-products.

Unfortunately, unhealthy habits (like eating too much fatty foods and sweets) produce more waste than these organs are able to handle. Water is an essential component in flushing out toxins. That’s why the body is two-thirds water to keep the system running smoothly.

Both sensitive organs, the liver and kidneys need water to work properly. If they are overburdened by too much waste products and lack water, expect them, like most machines, to break down.

The system then will look for other means to get rid of these toxins. The skin being the biggest organ, could be one outlet for waste. And skin breakouts, like acne is a manifestation of toxins finding a way to be expelled.

How water helps you prevent and treat acne problems

So if lack of water can indirectly lead to acne breakouts, will hydration help treat them? It will prevent them, definitely.

That is why drinking at least eight (8) glasses of water daily is recommended as part of a healthy regimen.

The latest studies in the field of sports medicine even show that a person should drink half their body weight in ounces, i.e. if you weigh 100 lbs, you should be taking at least 50 ounces of water or 6 and ¼ cups throughout the day.

The more active you are, or the more temperate your climate, the more you need to replenish the water in your body.

By drinking enough water and not just any fluids, you help clean out your system efficiently so toxins will exit where they should be expelled and not find alternatives like the skin.

Less toxins in the body means less infections and therefore less acne as well. Water pushes dead skin cells out, and makes it difficult for bacteria to thrive and ensure only the right amount of oils is retained to leave the skin clear, soft and supple.

Washing with water is just as beneficial to help fight acne.</itunes:summary>

As you can read in What is acne?, sebum is the culprit behind all types of acne breakouts. But what causes its excess formation? Hormones, primarily. Hormones stimulate sebaceous glands to produce sebum.

That’s why when people hit puberty that’s the time when they are most prone to acne, the bane of the young who put a premium on looks to belong. At puberty, the oil glands respond to hormonal changes thus making teenagers more susceptible to acne breakout.

In particular, it is the male hormone androgen (produced in the testes), but which is also present in women (through the ovaries) in smaller quantities, that causes the over-activity of these glands.

It is therefore not unusual for a woman to become prone to acne breakout during the pre-menstrual period. Stress is another factor that can lead to excess sebum production due to enlargement of the glands.

Diet and exercise are also important factors that control sebum production and reduce clogging of pores. This is because the body stores less fat when it uses energy more efficiently.

How can you prevent acne breakouts?
Acne is both preventable and treatable. You can take steps to avoid getting pimples and the like by always cleaning your face.

This ensures that the pores in your skin are not clogged and prevent the growth of bacteria. Even simply washing with water will remove excess oil on the skin’s surface.

As I mention above, hydration is also important when it comes to preventing acne breakouts.

So, make sure to drink water regularly. Adding lots of fruits and vegetables to your diet will also keep your skin healthy.

Other natural means to fight bacteria that causes acne are honey, oatmeal, sugar and even oranges that are used as exfoliants to rid the face of excess oils and dead cells.

You can control sebum overproduction with oral medication like birth control pills and vitamin A derivatives, such as isotretonoin.

Topical medication is also available for mild cases of acne. These can heal the skin breakouts and remove scarring.

Severe cases of acne may require antibiotics to reduce inflammation and fight infection. It is best to see your dermatologist before going ahead with any treatment, especially for bad acne.

If you have been asking yourself "What is acne?", you may want to read this article to discover the answers!

As you may know, our skin is made up of pores and hair follicles. The skin breaks out primarily because of too much oil, known as sebum, which clogs the pores.

Sebum, a component of body oils, is produced by the sebaceous glands, and is responsible for coating the skin, protecting it against bacteria as well as preventing water loss.

This also explains why proper hydration is essential for a healthy skin.

Acne, in its many variations, results when there is too much oil in the skin and pores clog up preventing it from “breathing.” Unfortunately, bacteria thrive in an oily environment thus leading to infection and ultimately, inflammation.

Different types of acne
Once infected, the skin breaks out and depending on the state it leaves the clogged pore in, that’s the type of acne that forms and becomes visible. There are many forms of acne:

blackheads,
whiteheads,
pimples,
and cysts.

For blackheads and whiteheads, sebum and dead cells clog the pores. In the latter, the surface remains open and you can see black dead cells. The opposite happens with whiteheads – the pore closes as the sebum binds with dead cells.

When the number of bacteria increases rapidly due to the oil formation, the clogged pore becomes inflamed leaving you with pimples, characterized as red, hot and swollen.

What you want to avoid are cyst forms, the worst kind of acne, because the swelling has penetrated beyond the skin’s surface. It is the most painful kind and often leaves scarring.

Just for the record, acne is not confined to the face but in areas where sebaceous glands are most dense. In the face, this is the forehead, chin and cheeks. The middle portion of the back, the chest and shoulders are other areas prone to sebum accumulation so don’t be surprised when acne breakouts suddenly appear there.

The good news is that you can get rid of acne with natural products like Clear Skin MAX. Please read Clear Skin MAX review if you'd like to discover how it helps treat and prevent acne breakouts!</itunes:summary>
