Apple Cider Vinegar Acne Treatment

Apple cider vinegar has been known for decades to have a vast variety of health and healing benefits. From stress reduction to weight loss apple cider vinegar can do wonders depending on the chemical balance of your body. One treatment not often found by a general search about this remedy is that it also helps treat multiple aspects of acne.

The Bottle

At first I bought a bottle of organic pure and unfiltered ACV from the grocery store (its works better if its organic and best if its organic WITH “the mother” it will usually say this on the bottle if it has it) to use directly on my acne and scars. The cost for a substantial bottle is pretty cheap. Mine was around $3(Bragg’s brand). It is recommended to mix ACV and water in a 1:2 ratio and also that you test your skin’s sensitivity to it. If it’s too strong, add more water. Use a cotton ball and dab the trouble areas. Warning! This stuff stinks, but its a small price to pay to help heal your acne. Also, if you have any openings in the skin it will sting. If your skin isn’t super sensitive to it, you can even sleep in it and wash it off in the morning, although its mainly used as a toner to apply then wash off after a few minutes (I started with 15 min). I do this two times a day and after 2 weeks I saw a reduction in my scars and to the acne that had already formed that I hadn’t seen using any other product I have tried in my life. Also the tone of my skin was a lot healthier looking. The amount of time to start seeing results vary depending on your body. Typically it is around 2 weeks though it can be sooner or later. You can try heavier mixing ratios at your own risk. I have heard of people being sensitive to ACV, so be careful. Personally, I am now using ACV straight on without mixing with water, but only on a q-tip to dab any trouble areas.

Tablets

Next up, I decided to double team my acne/scar problems and buy ACV tablets. This was 2 weeks after I started the toner/skin treatment method. You can make a mixture to drink the same ACV you bought in the bottle (2 tbs daily mixed in a bottle of water or other healthy drink), but its been celebrated as eventually wearing away your tooth enamel and esophagus due to the acidity level. It is safer and easier for most to take the tablets which can be found in many online vitamin and drugstores. Particularly since the liquid tastes terrible! I choose tablets that are 500mg each which is the equivalent to 2 tsp. I take them twice daily as directed on the back of the bottle, and it has helped finish the formation of new acne from the inside out and also helps balance your pH levels and creates a healthier glow to your skin.

Upkeep

I pair these up with using Neutrogena soap in the shower instead of soaps with lots of fragrances and moisturizers, and use a gentle non-comedogenic moisturizer after my showers since ACV does tend to dry out your skin. I have been doing this for a little over a month and the results have been great! Better than the hundreds of products I have tried designed to cure and succor acne. Obedient Luck!

Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is the discoloration, in the form of red marks or brown marks, that remains on the skin after the acne subsides.

According to Healy and Simpson from the Department of Dermatology at the University of Newcastle, “acne is as common as it was 20 years ago but is now less severe in teenagers and affects more people in their 20s and 30s, who have high expectation of treatment.” The prevalence factor and the transition from the teens toward the slightly older generation are both significant because millions of people of all ages are left with post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation as their skin attempts to heal from the inflammatory lesions.

Several beauty products, medications, and home remedies have shown moderate efficacy in treating post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. The most popular choices in the United States and the rest of the world are outlined and discussed below.

Remedy Number One: Chemical Peels

Chemical peels have gained popularity over the modern years due to their economical and convenient uses. A chemical peel consists of applying several layers of acid to the hyperpigmented areas in order to remove the top layer of the skin through a controlled burning mechanism. Addressing active acne lesions prior to starting any type of skin care procedure is absolutely necessary!

Glycolic, lactic, and trichloroacetic acids–all examples of alpha hydroxy acids–are the three most recommended chemical peels.

Glycolic acid, both colorless and odorless, comes in concentrations varying from 10% to 80%. It is the most popular at-home peel due low risks and great penetrating ability. Before attempting a glycolic acid peel, a glycolic-based toner is recommended in order to prep the skin for the forthcoming peel. Following the prepping procedure, the glycolic peel is applied with a q-tip for two minutes. After the two minutes elapse, the solution is neutralized by applying baking soda or rinsing with water. The way may be repeated once every two weeks for maximum results; six treatments are usually enough for significant improvement of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Individuals who have no previous experience with glycolic peels are recommended to start with concentrations between 10% and 15%; more experienced peel users may find concentrations between 30% and 50% perfectly tolerable. After the skin adjusts to the plot, higher concentrations are suggested and necessary in order to see improvement.

Lactic acid is the mildest alpha hydroxy allowing the users to start with 30% to 50% concentrations without adverse side-effects. Depending on the skin care kit, some peels come with a pH-prepping solution that is applied right before the peel is performed. The procedure for doing a lactic peel is similar to that of glycolic peel, except for longer duration of the application–usually lasting 3 to 7 minutes. Lactic peels are great for individuals with sensitive skin; however, due to mild nature, lactic acid peels are less effective compare to glycolic or trichloracetic peels.

Trichloroacetic acid (TCA) is the strongest of the three peels listed above. As a result, it is generally only used in concentrating ranging between 10% and 50% with 15% being the average. Generally, the recommended concentration depends on the skin tolerance as well as the depth of the hyperpigmented acne scars; furthermore, as the concentration of the peel increases, so does the strength of the peel. A itsy-bitsy amount of the solution is placed on the toothpick and applied to the skin. Instead of just letting the solution sit on the skin for few minutes, the peel is applied through a layering process where one rubs the toothpick over the affected areas for up to two minutes. TCA peel does not need to be neutralized; therefore, it is left on the skin and not rinsed out. The same procedure is repeated the next day for greater results. The following couple of days are marked by skin tightening and finally peeling where tall layers of skin are removed. The modern skin is a refreshing pink color depicting improved tone and texture.

Remedy Number Two: Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) can be purchased in most supermarkets, such as Walmart, and it has been recently advertised as a weight loss cure. However, many acne sufferers use apple cider vinegar to diminish stubborn acne marks–or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. The application is simple: use a cotton ball to apply a solution of two parts water to two parts apple cider vinegar to the affected areas of the skin and rub for one to two minutes every morning and night.

As early as one week into the treatment, a noticeable reduction of pseudo acne scars should be noted. (Since post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation marks are not indented scars in a sense that they move over time, they are often referred to as pseudo acne scars.)

Skin tightening and greater overall texture are the acquired results with this simple, yet effective Apple Cider Vinegar treatment.

Remedy Number Three: Lasers

N-lite, IPL, and Cooltouch lasers are among the more expensive treatment options for post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation varying between $1,000.00 and $3,000.00 per procedure. Furthermore, compare to ablative lasers–which can cause potential scarring, additional hyperpigmentation, and permanent change of skin texture–non ablative lasers carry almost no risk.

N-lite laser therapy is an FDA well-liked, non ablative, yellow-light laser that claims to improve skin tone while destroying the acne causing bacteria in the process. The procedure generally lasts about 20 minutes and the pain is minimal. In order to see desired results, the treatment usually needs to be repeated.
IPL, or Intense Pulse Light treatment, is a white light, non ablative laser that interacts with fibroblasts and broken capillaries in the dermis in order to improve skin tone and texture. The downtime is minimal and the laser claims to stimulate collagen formation, thus further improving skin texture and hyperpigmentation.

Cooltouch laser is a grouping of cryogen spray and an Nd-Yag laser, which similarly to IPL claims to induce collagen formation by stimulating fibroblasts. The procedure is very quick, lasting about 15 minutes, and the recovery includes slight redness on the treated areas. The Cooltouch laser has controversial reviews with some people experiencing very little improvement or requiring multiple treatments over a prolonged period of time. Some patients become skeptical of the Cooltouch laser due to lack of the immediate improvement as collagen formation can lift up two months.

Remedy Number Four: Hydroquinone

Hydroquinone is a topical treatment in a gel or cream form used for hyperpigmentation.

It is generally advised for patients suffering from hyperpigmented areas such as age spots, cholasma, melasma, and freckles, and those whose spots or marks are brown versus red in color. For this reason, a wide group of acne sufferers with red marks from acne do not see great improvement with hydroquinone.

Those who are willing to try hydroquinone for their post-inflammation hyperpigmentation need to be aware of the potential side effects, i.e., burning, itching, redness, stinging and those more serious such as an allergic reaction or a rash. Furthermore, some countries have banned the use of hydroquinone due to the potential link to determined types of cancers.

Exposing the skin to sunlight while using the medication will lead to additional darkening of the skin, thus counteracting the potential benefits.

Remedy Number Five: Alpha Hydroxy and Beta Hydroxy Acid Products

Beta hydroxy acids (BHA) are lipid soluble, i.e., salicylic acid. Alpha hydroxy acids (AHA) are water soluble and include five groups: glycolic acid, malic acid, tartaric acid, lactic acid, and citric acid.

While the first allotment of the article refers to alpha hydroxy peels specifically, this allotment pertains to their use in over-the-counter, skin care products such as creams, gels, toners, and more recently foundations to address hyperpigmentation.

My adventure with acne started when I was 15 years old. I was a skinny, braces-wearing, awkward girl, and it was my deepest wish that I could race up my ability to age. No one warned me to watch what I wish for. I’m 33 years old, still with no discernable bust line, but I’ve got acne to spare.

Having adult acne is a very isolating experience. It’s often associated with uncleanliness, a poor diet, and with laziness. And I was recently dismayed to hear that drug users (particularly meth users) often have skin problems that look a whole lot like acne.

When I meet people, I can’t help but wonder if they search for at my skin and think I’m a skinny, dirty, drug user. You can imagine what this does to my self-esteem.

People often say that acne is something you’ll grow out of. However, this approach has not worked for me (obviously). So I decided to secure proactive. I set out to get some answers.

The basics

Your skin is covered with tiny hairs, which sit inside equally slight ducts. Inside those ducts are small glands that secrete oils to keep your skin soft and hydrated. Acne begins when those ducts plug up with fat, dead skin cells and oil. That plugged duct can then fill with bacteria and lead to a puss-filled pimple.

The whole process is usually attributed to hormones, testosterone in particular. Women may have breakouts during a particular part of their menstrual cycle.

Some people believe that acne is caused by what they eat. The American Academy of Dermatology specifically refutes this, however. They say that studies have shown no link between what you eat and acne.

Experts to agree, though, that steps you take to “cure” acne could actually cause more breakouts. For example:

• Scrubbing your skin with a washcloth can cause minor abrasions that can harbor bacteria, which can lead to breakouts.

• Using alcohol-based products can make your skin very dry. This makes the glands work double-time, trying to keep your skin moist. This can lead to, you guessed it, another breakout.

• Avoiding moisturizers can also develop the skin dry, and cause the glands more, acne-causing, work.

• Picking, poking or squeezing pimples can drive the bacteria deeper into the skin. This can cause deep acne scarring. Additionally, it’s a great way to spread bacteria around your face, which can lead to new pimples.

Steps to take

So, what’s a girl to do? Everything I’ve read says that acne can be controlled with two things: persistence and patience. The course I’m outlining below seems to be the best course of action.

1. Go shopping. Buy a mild cleanser, a composed astringent (no alcohol), an acne treatment containing 2.5 percent benzoyl peroxide (no higher), and a non-comedogenic (won’t block pores) SPF 15 moisturizer.

2. In the morning, wash with the cleanser for 2 minutes (no scrubbing!) and pat dry. Follow with the astringent. Follow with the benzoyl peroxide, and then the moisturizer.

3. Skip the makeup. You can use a flesh-colored acne treatments to cover and heal blemishes, but most foundation makeup can block pores.

4. During the day, do not touch your face at all. No resting your chin in your hands, scratching your nose, picking at your pimples, rubbing your eyes. Don’t tuck the phone underneath your chin. Drink lots of water.

5. At night, follow your morning cleansing routine, and get plenty of rest.

Acne treatments work by preventing new breakouts, which means it can take up to two months to see complete results. And this is where the patience comes in. You’ll need to follow the treatments faithfully, even if you think they aren’t working.

And finally, if you notice no improvement in two months, it might be time to pop over to the dermatologist. Birth control pills may help, or low-dose antibiotics, or laser treatments. Hopefully, I won’t have to take those steps, as I don’t relish the idea of taking medications for what is, obviously, a cosmetic problem. But if I do, I’ll be able to take that step knowing I’ve done all I can at home to treat the condition.

Proactiv Solution – More Proof that There Really is One Born Every Minute

It seems as if the people of Guthy-Renker, the distributors or Proactiv Solution, have acne sufferers across America by the cajones.

It is rather difficult to view a television program (usually on cable) without some highly-decorated celebrity – namely Jessica Simpson, Vanessa Williams, and Kelly Clarkson, to name a few – showing up on the screen, smiling beautifully for the camera while extolling the virtues of this great bottled hope known as Proactiv Solution, a line of products developed by dermatologists to help heal acne in people of all ages, regardless of the severity of the acne.

I was lucky to get through my teenage years and early twenties with extremely minimal acne. Any blemishes I had went away quickly. Then I entered my mid-twenties, and my face started erupting. I went to the drugstores and basically tried everything across the board – Clearasil, Neutrogena, Clean and Clear. None of them helped. Granted I might not have given them enough time and expected them to work overnight, but I was desperate. And to make matters worse, I had no desire to spy a doctor because 1. I was ashamed, and 2. my prescription drug plan was not very sterling, and I had a bad feeling I would have had to try several different things until we found something that would work, and those accumulating copays would have drained my wallet dry.

So, having seen the commercials and having been sucked in by propaganda, I purchased the Proactiv Solution.

According to the package, there is a three-step process consumers MUST follow. The first is a cleanser. The second is a toner. The third is a repairing solution. All for a whopping $60 at my local mall’s Proactiv kiosk. But, hey, I concept, it’s supposed to work! Kelly Clarkson said so! At the bathroom sink, I opened each bottle. The first thing I noticed was the odor. The booklet that came with the kit told me it was a “fragrance,” but to me there is a difference between fragrance and odor, and I assure you, what wafted out of that bottle when I went to squeeze a couple of drops of the cleanser onto my fingertips was indeed an odor. To slightly damp skin, I applied the cleanser. Though I applied it gently, I found it was rather abrasive. When I rinsed, I felt that there was a hint of a stinging sensation in my skin. Thinking this was normal, I dried my face and applied the toner. Then I applied the repairing solution which smelled just as rank as the cleanser. I left my bathroom, allowing the Proactiv to do its work. I could not back but view on my way out of there that the towel with which I dried my face had bleached streaks running through it. Blame it on the benzoyl peroxide. I made a mental note to use white towels from that point on.

Time went by. Any change to my complexion was minimal. I was becoming frustrated again. But I kept at it, naively thinking it would work. I mean, this was Proactiv! This was what people were clamoring to buy in hopes of achieving perfect skin! Not to mention, there were testimonials on the website from regular everyday consumers (read: NOT Jessica Simpson) who were honest about singing hymns for this product. Really, it impartial HAD to work, didn’t it?

As more than several months went by, I had my respond in the form of a “NO!” that hit me as subtly as a cinder block to the forehead. And with that “no” came the realization that I was another American consumer sucked into the capture of just another celebrity-endorsed product.

I had enough. I was tired of allowing myself, a proud, free-thinking American to be swayed by some flavor-of-the-week celebrity and of paying rude amounts of money for something that contained more stench and more filler and more propaganda than trusty acne-fighting drug, and I felt it was time to do something.

After doing some research online and in magazines (and not for one person to tell me, “Use this, and only this. It’s magic,” but to get information and achieve it together to develop my beget solution because I still stubbornly refused to check in with a doctor, which I do not recommend to anybody), I was back at square one, in the health and beauty section at Target. I picked up a bottle of Cetaphyl, a very detached cleanser that 100% odor- and fragrance-free and a tube of 10% benzoyl peroxide gel by Acne Free. Why those products? Well, I mentioned the mildness of the Cetaphyl, which was very important for me. The percentage of benzoyl peroxide in the gel was deciding factor for me to buy the gel. Benzoyl peroxide is a key ingredient in fighting acne. Any website, article, or other piece of information about acne will tell you that. I contain it is the percentage of benzoyl peroxide that also plays a major role. In the first step of Proactiv, the cleanser, the percentage of benzoyl peroxide is 2.5%. The second step, the toner, contains none, and the third step, the repairing solution, contains 2.5%. The important thing to understand is that 2.5% benzoyl peroxide plus 2.5% benzoyl peroxide does NOT equal 5% benzoyl peroxide! All you will have set aside on your skin is 2.5% benzoyl peroxide plus more 2.5% benzoyl peroxide. That is really it. And that can make one wonder, “Then what is the point of the third step when I have already put 2.5% benzoyl peroxide on my face? ” Again, this objective goes to show that the makers of Proactiv are interested in making people buy more products at once so that they can make more money.

Well, my new way not only saved me a nice chunk of change (the Cetaphyl is only about $7 and the Acne Free Terminator 10 benzoyl peroxide gel is only about $4 at Target), but it worked! I have been washing with the Cetaphyl and applying the gel twice a day for about two months, and I am very satisfied to have found something that works that I will stick with. What made me even happier was that this welcome change came along to calm my acne just in time for my wedding. I really believe that had I stayed with the more expensive and less reliable Proactiv, I would have had something to cause me a little misery on my big day, and, really, what bride wants that?
