How to prepare a 5yr old for more surgery

My 5yr old is waiting for further surgery for his cleft palate. This will be his third surgery. His last op was just over a year ago and he got very distressed at the whole process. I am wondering if anyone has any advice on how to prepare him for this next op. He is a very strong minded child and it can be very hard to persuade him to do anything he doesn't want to do. During his last stay in Hosp he fought everything the nurses needed to do even down to putting cream on his hand prior to surgery. It made the whole process very distressing for both him and us. I am dreading this next visit. How do you explain why he needs to go through it all at his age? His fears extend even now as he will not even take calpol at home when he is sick. Any medicine at all has to be hidden. Following his last surgery he had to take 2 lots of antibiotics and I can still remember the tears and upset it caused. We had to try to hide it in ice cream etc but even that didn't work. Any advice anyone could give would be gratefully received as I don't want him to go through the same stress this time. Thank you. From an anxious mum.

The disc I am talking about is a hard (normally bright yellowy/orange) disc. There are no holes in it. I think you are talking about is the smaller white, flexible membrane, that sits on a disc with 4 holes? The membrane must be covered with the solid disc to ensure no leakage and keeping the formula sterile. I've been googling trying to get pics for you to explain better - this might help:- http://www.justkiddingonline.co.uk/3x-medela-breastmilk-bottles-small.ir. If you can't follow what I'm on about, give the association a shout or maybe someone else online might explain better!! Sorry about the misunderstanding. Best of luck

My son had so many difficulties ranging from continuously puking up his bottles to then choking on liquids and then there was the gagging. Just when you think one thing is sorted with them another problem pops up. The speech and language therapist will be able to help you and get the issues resolved. It will take time but hopefully you'll get it sorted.

My son is having op in 2 weeks -only discovered yesterday that lower jaw surgery may be involved. Looks as if it is not poss to push out upper jaw sufficient so in order to align teeth bottom jaw to be recessed. Concerned that lower jaw will be recessed approx 4mm (is this so minimal that we are worrying for no reason)-this might entail chin surgery in twelve mths to rectify. Obviously would like to avoid this. are you saying that if my son only wants to get upper jaw surgery done (and lower jaw surgery is warranted) that would be wrong decision to make. That it would be crazy just to give go ahead for upper jaw surgery and accept whatever improvement that will be and to leave lower jaw alone.( Going to see surgeon again next week - don't know what options we have if any. Is there a liasion person we should contact. op will be in St James.

Per year and they back date it to child's date of birth we received 6000. Of a refund just thought I'd mention it not many people kno about it.best of luck anyway and keep fighting for it.

If you're in Dublin then you'd have a choice between Crumlin hospital and Temple street, not sure about the rest of the country or the options you'd have there. Why not ring Georgina Wade and ask maybe she could help you out with information on that? Look for the contact information on this website for her or email info@cleft.ie and ask, I think that's the email.
