We’re now the Learning Round Table (aka LearnRT). For the time being, you will continue to see CLENE in various places online. It will take awhile to get everything changed, including a logo and other design templates. Our new website www.alalearning.org is up and running but currently under construction. We are also still using our original website www.ala.org/clenert. So, pardon our dust while we get our “house” in order. And stay tuned for some very exciting developments with the Learning Round Table.

We hope to see you at one of our programs and, as always, you’re invited to join us at our Board meetings; to participate, observe or just drop in to say hello.

PRECONFERENCES on Friday July 10

AM Preconference: Making it Stick: Designing, Delivering, and Surviving Presentations: A polished and memorable presentation requires skills that depend on your ability to work with, influence, and persuade your audience. This interactive hands-on workshop will help you understand and develop rapport with your audience; develop active content in your presentation; help you learn to be comfortable in front of your audience; and understand when and how to use support materials.
Speakers: Lori Reed, Employee Learning Coordinator for the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library; Paul Signorelli, writer/trainer/consultant for libraries and nonprofit organizations (Paul Signorelli & Associates).

PM Preconference: Punch it up with Pictures: Presentations with visual power: Are your presentations riddled with bullet points? Visual images often speak louder and more succinctly than words. In the tight format of a PowerPoint presentation, strategic use of images can convey more meaning than bullet points and text. The presenter skills you learn in the morning workshop on delivering an unforgettable presentation will shine brighter when your support materials complement rather than compete with you. This workshop will help you to understand how visuals communicate, show you where to find free-use images, and share some best practices for editing and adding images to your presentations.
Speakers: Tony Tallent, Director of Libraries & Arts for the City of Boulder, Colorado; Michael Porter, Interactive Strategy Manager for WebJunction; Betha Gutsche, Learning Initiatives Developer for WebJunction.

PROGRAMS BY DATE

Friday, July 10

Making it Stick: Designing, Delivering, and Surviving Presentations, 8:30 am – 12:00 pm. This has been a wonderful way to communicate with each other.

We would like to encourage all CLENE members to participate in our virtual monthly meetings. This is a great way for members to connect, communicate and collaborate.

Below is our online meeting schedule for the remainder of 2009. CLENE virtual meetings run from 2:00-3:00 EDT.

• Wednesday, June 10
• Thursday, July 16
• Wednesday, August 12
• Thursday, September 17
• Wednesday, October 14
• Thursday, November 19
• Wednesday, December 9

I strongly urge you to attend the June 10th meeting. We will be discussing a proposed name change for the CLENE Round Table and we want your input!

A recent survey sent out to people involved in training, staff/professional development and continuing education suggested that most people, including CLENE members, have no clue what the CLENE acronym stands for.

The proposed name change is from CLENE Round Table to the LEARNING Round Table. Learning is what we do, what we’re passionate about and what we promote. We’re not all trainers, we’re not all educators but we’re ALL learners... and learning is what brings us all together.

ALA’s deadline for requesting a name change is June 12th. Please join the virtual meeting on June 10th and put in your two CEnts worth before it’s too late.

If you can’t attend the next virtual meeting, please send comments or questions about the name change to Stacy Schrank, CLENE President (sschrank [at] metrolibrary.org) or Pat Carterette, CLENE Vice-President (pcarterette [at] georgialibraries.org).

Join the CLENE virtual meeting in OPAL a few minutes prior to each meeting: http://www.conference321.com/masteradmin/room.asp?id=rs423c62c43df0

If you’ve never used OPAL before, be sure to run the set-up Wizard. Is someone from your library attending ALA this summer?

If so, you’re invited to participate in the CLENE Training Showcase where you can share information about your program AND learn about the best practices of other libraries and organizations. There is NO COST to participate! All you do is stand by your table and talk about your cool program with people who stop by. It’s really fun! Applications are due on April 1.

The CLENE Round Table Training Showcase will be Sunday, July 12 from 1:30-3:30 pm. The planning committee is on the lookout for libraries, library organizations, presenters, speakers and vendors to participate – anyone who has a great training or staff development program they’d like to share. CLENE is all about sharing ideas (and stealing ideas ?)so this Training Showcase is the perfect venue. If you have any questions, please give us a call!

The Showcase normally attracts between 200-300 attendees over a period of 2 hours – all of whom are interested in training and staff development. The number of participants(presenters) varies from 20-30. It’s a really fun event with refreshments and lots of door prizes. Each participant has a 6’ draped table on which to put a portable table-top display unit, handouts or other related materials.

Please see CLENE Round Table Training Showcase website for more information. There’s a link on the main page for the Training Showcase Page with even more info about the Showcase, along with two online application forms – one for those wishing to participate and one for those want to be a sponsor or a donor.

There are a few photos from last year’s Training Showcase in Anaheim in the Dec. 2008 CLENExchange Newsletter.

For more information, contact either Pat Carterette, pcarterette@georgialibraries.org or404-235-7124 OR Melissa Lattanzi at lattanzm@neo-rls.org or 330.847.7744, extension 12

What are the competencies that we will need as we lead our libraries in future skill development and employee learning?

To celebrate Employee Learning Week, join us for an exploration of current and future competencies for learning professionals working in libraries. We will look at strategies for our own development and the resources available to help us pursue them.

ASTD’s Employee Learning Week, December 8-12, features champions, who successfully connect staff learning with achieving results. For more information, go to: http://www.employeelearningweek.org/

This hour-long webinar is co-sponsored by WebJunction and ALA's Continuing Library Education Network and Round Table (CLENERT).

Mary Ross, CLENERT Board member and former manager of staff development at the Seattle Public Library, will lead the discussion. As with the new year comes time once again to solicit participants for the upcoming CLENE Training Showcase to be held at the ALA Annual Meeting in June - this year is sunny Anaheim, CA.

This past year, the showcase was a great success - we had hundreds of people come through our doors and with the participation of great people (like ourselves) we were able to give away a large assortment of prizes throughout the event. We also had three great sponsors - WebJunction, The Crisis Prevention Institute, Inc., and Infopeople - who made it possible for us to furnish snacks and beverages during the event.

This year, we are securing sponsorships again and hope to be bigger and better than ever! As you have presented in the past, we would encourage you to once again consider participating in our showcase. And if your budget allows, consider sponsorship of our event. What a great way to connect one-on-one with colleagues who are using your products, services, or your ideas to continue the educational advancement and networking of library staff across the nation and the world. We want the CLENE Showcase to be what people are talking about at Annual!

Participation proposals can be completed online by visiting the CLENE page on the ALA website (http://www.ala.org/ala/clenert/trainingshowcase/index.cfm). Deadline for submissions is Friday, February 22nd. We hope to accept as many participants as possible. Final decisions will be made prior to March 7th.

Please Note: Each participant will be provided with a 6' banquet table and two chairs. Electricity is available (please select this on your proposal form). Wireless Internet may be available for an extra charge. If you are planning to use wireless, please contact me.

Sponsors and participants will be featured in the June edition of the CLENE X-Change in preparation for the Annual Meeting. Advertisement for the showcase will also be conducted at the Public Library Association Conference in March in Minneapolis, MN. CLENE will be sponsoring three programs there and information on CLENE events at Annual will be distributed. If you will be at PLA, look us up - we would love to see you!!

If you have any additional questions regarding the CLENE Showcase, please feel free to contact me at your convenience using the information here.
