Alpine lake systems are important habitat for many western native Salmonids, for example ~20 percent of the populations for one native trout (Colorado River cutthroat trout; Oncorhynchus clarkii pleuriticus) in the southern Rockies are found in high elevation (>1700 m) lake systems. ... The temperature and climate sensitivity of alpine lakes, along with projected (~3 °C rise in mean summer air temperature by 2050) and observed (+0.12 °C/yr from 1991–2006) trends in Rocky Mountain air temperatures, indicate the potential for abiotic changes in alpine lakes. Moreover, alpine lake systems may provide refuge for cutthroat trout populations that are increasingly threatened by potential climate-related impacts to streams (e.g., low flow or channel drying, increases in wildfire, etc). Key knowledge gaps that may be explored include the influence of climate change on the thermal structure of alpine lakes and how fish ecology is related to these conditions. ...Field work is expected primarily to be in the Southern Rocky Mountains and could focus on collecting detailed abiotic characteristics and native trout habitat use of alpine lakes and adjoining streams. Postdoc: permafrost in a warming world

The postdoc will be primarily responsible for running the field component of this project: supervising personnel and making measurements of isotope fluxes, ecosystem C exchange, vegetation aboveground productivity, and associated environmental measurements. The postdoc will be expected to organize, analyze, and maintain large data sets generated from a number of sensors and gas exchange measurement systems, and participate in data analysis and publications. There are also opportunities within the context of this project to develop related research interests on climate change effects in high latitude ecosystems. Candidates with a background in biogeochemistry, ecosystem ecology, plant ecology, soil science, forestry, hydrology, or isotopes are encouraged to apply. Experience with Campbell data loggers, SAS or R programming, ecosystem C exchange measurements, or isotopes would be helpful. The postdoc will generally spend the majority of the spring-to-fall (May through September) field season in Alaska running the field project, with winters spent in Florida on lab and data analysis. Experience with working and living in rugged field conditions is required. Salary is commensurate with experience, and full health care benefits are provided for individuals and families.

The last two years set a sad record in the number and scale of natural disasters and clearly demonstrated high vulnerability of the global economy to their impact. The most serious consequences have the so-called natural-technological disasters that take place when natural hazards trigger accidents and disasters at technological objects such as nuclear power plants, chemical plants, oil refineries and pipelines, or critical infrastructure facilities. One of the most large-scaled natural-technological disasters occurred on March 11, 2011 in Japan as a result of a massive earthquake and tsunami. A distinctive feature of natural-technological events is their synergistic nature with a disaster impact on the technosphere, resulting in simultaneous occurrences of numerous technospheric accidents. The consequences are the more severe the higher are the population density and concentration of industrial facilities and infrastructure in disaster-affected areas. ...In the last years, notable examples showing the failure of the infrastructure systems by flood (New Orleans, Bombay) and drought (Australia, US Southeast, Central China) has highlighted the urban water hazards to which large cities are subjected. The linkages between natural hazards at a regional scale and infrastructure risks at a local scale in urban areas can be therefore considered as crucial to assess possible scenarios in the future. The main goal of this open session is to summarize case studies of relationships between natural hazards and technological disasters and to encourage a discussion about tools and methods to prevent or minimize their consequences.

The field of Hydraulic Measurements & Experimental Methods represents the broad range of experimental tools and techniques, and the methods of data analysis, visualization, and interpretation that are used to quantify all aspects of water flows. Areas of application range from rivers to lakes to estuaries and coastal oceans, and also include manmade aquatic systems such as irrigation channels and reservoirs. It is a fact that the challenges facing water resources managers and the technological capabilities of water resources scientists and engineers are both advancing at a rapid rate. HMEM 2012 positions itself at the intersection of these two trajectories and is an opportunity for researchers, practitioners, and students of the field to come together in a focused and forward-looking forum. All relevant topics are encouraged, including new developments in measurement technologies, new analyses that improve data quality or extract increased information from existing tools, unique examples of applications of techniques, the analysis of uncertainty, and the optimization of the deployment of measurement technologies to minimize uncertainty. Developments of data collection networks, autonomous networks of sensors, and remotely sensed measurements are of special interest. The Earth System Governance Project, a ten-year research programme under the auspices of the International Human Dimensions Programme on Global Environmental Change (IHDP), was launched in 2009 to address the problems of environmental governance. Climate change mitigation requires a fundamental transformation of the energy system and new approaches to biospheric carbon management. ... Depending on specific biomass conversion technologies, bioenergy will compete for feedstocks with livestock production, and more generally it will compete for land and water resources with food production. Options for reducing pressures on agriculture include further expansion of agricultural land and irrigation, increasing international trade, and improving agricultural productivity through technological change. Model-based assessments of future scenarios can show, how serious the pressure on agriculture will be; what are the trade-offs between climate change mitigation, food and water security, forest conservation, and other ecosystem services; and how different options for reducing these pressures may interact. While there are various models available for global assessments of the interplay between climate change, agriculture, bioenergy and forest conservation, they follow different modeling paradigms and have a different coverage of exogenous and endogenous factors. This session aims at starting a model comparison exercise on future scenarios of agriculture and biospheric carbon management until the year 2050. Different modeling groups are invited to contribute their latest research, leading to a special issue in a high-ranking journal after the conference. Target audience are researchers and policy-makers interested in setting the right incentives for reducing future pressures on agriculture and land use from increased bioenergy demand.

The General Assembly noted water’s critical role for sustainable development, environmental integrity, and the eradication of poverty and hunger. The Stockholm Statement calls on leadership at all levels of government participating in the UNCSD to commit to achieving "universal provisioning of safe drinking water, adequate sanitation and modern energy services by the year 2030" and to adopt intervening targets to increase efficiency in the management of water, energy and food. The issue also highlights: an informal consultation on the themes of Rio+20 recently hosted by Brazil and attended by 40 countries; the Interregional Small Island Developing States (SIDS) Preparatory Meeting for the UNCSD; the 64th Annual Conference of NGOs held recently in Bonn, Germany under the theme, “Sustainable Societies; Responsive Citizens;” and a two-day seminar in Incheon, Korea in preparation for the official launch of the UN Office for Sustainable Development (UN-OSD). The UNOSD seminar included discussion on priorities for the Office’s operation as a global resource center for experience-based knowledge, training and information on sustainable development. The newsletter notes that particular attention was given to the central pillar of services to be provided through a web-based knowledge and training portal. Three themes were identified - national sustainable development strategies; indicators; and energy for sustainable development - on which guidance and training materials will be developed. The newsletter also announces that the International Chamber of Commerce’s (ICC) Green Economy Task Force has developed a business definition of “green economy” and provided comments to the UN Environment Programme's (UNEP) Green Economy Report. As a next step, the ICC Green Economy Task Force is developing a set of high-level framework conditions on green economy.

The primary duty of the position will be to inform Elwha River Restoration Project managers of hydrologic and geomorphic conditions during and following removal of the Glines Canyon and Elwha Dams. An extensive sediment adaptive management monitoring program has been developed for the project to ensure stable landforms develop in the delta regions of the reservoirs, natural appearing and functioning fluvial conditions develop, and that turbidity levels do not exceed mitigation facility design specifications. The incumbent, with assistance from the Sediment Management Team, will be responsible for carrying out the adaptive management and monitoring plan and keeping project managers apprised of physical reservoir and riverine conditions associated with the dam removal. Monitoring activities for the project are many and diverse including visual inspections, repeat surveying of cross sections, installation and maintenance of staff gauges, identification of potential landslide hazards, observation and documentation of changing river morphology, sediment and water quality characteristics, quantification of delta erosion rates and comparison with model predictions. The four countries are now involved in the ratification process and in the negotiations of instititutional aspects, including discussions regarding an annex to the Agreement on arbitration procedures. The course does not set out to provide a practical ‘toolkit’ guide for policy and practice.
