Day 3...September Cebu

Today is our last day in Cebu City but before heading towards the airport after our hotel check out, we go first to Mactan Shrine, Lapu Lapu City thru Grab booking.

Mactan Shrine is a large open area where you can see the Mactan Shrine and read over the Mactan battle depiction. You will really remember Cebu from history for this Battle of Mactan when Ferdinand Magellan and his crew attacked Mactan Island and Lapu-Lapu and his men fought back and defeated them. It is believed that this place is where the battle took place and that the shrine was made in the area where Ferdinand Magellan died during the battle.

I noticed that most of the visitors in that area that day are foreigners in groups with their tour guide, probably relaying the history that had taken place in the area. Cebu is truly where fighters with great courage are born of.

I know that there is more of Cebu and not just its city. Three days may not be enough and actually it is the most relaxed province travel I had since I am with my mother. We needed to travel in a slow pace and in return I am just making the most of what is…the most important is that at least we have more time spent together. It really takes time, treasure, effort to plan and travel.

I will definitely go back to Cebu again and learn and explore more of this province. Thank you Cebu City, for a taste of your goodness, rich heritage, works of art, and your love of nature.

September Cebu...Cebu Tops and Sirao Garden

Cebu “Tops” is actually on a mountain top, Busay Cebu. The road going to Cebu’s highlands is steep, narrow, and winding but our driver seems not minding and very familiar with the road. There is an entrance fee but at that day time seems to have very limited guests coming in. They said that the “Tops” is best at sunset until night.

The “Tops” is a viewing deck where you could see the whole of Cebu city. It also has its interesting concrete circle architecture with tables and chairs for family picnic dining area. We do have a few shots there before finally going to our ultimate Busay destination, the Little Amsterdam of Cebu.

They have called Sirao Garden as the Little Amsterdam of Cebu. There are lots of colorful and beautifully arranged flowers inside like the sunflower. They have also placed many Bali-inspired photo accessories and background. In fact, I enjoyed taking Nanay’s picture with these beautiful backgrounds. It is a little bit crowded though at that time as people are posing and snapping pictures everywhere. There are also long lines towards the gigantic hand statue but it is worth the wait. I also enjoy the weather at that time and how the wind just blew in and around the place. So relaxing, not to mention the calming effect of the blooming flowers and the mountain horizons that has brought my eyes.

I really wanted to stay more but we need to go. Kuya driver told us that there is one more Sirao Garden in that place but I could feel that Nanay wants to go already besides we still have one more major tourist attraction to visit…the Taoist Temple.

The Taoist Temple is located in Beverly Hills Subdivision of Lahug, Cebu City. It is a place for Taoist meditation, built on hillside and so needs to climb almost a hundred steps from the gated entrance before reaching the temple. It was not easy for me to put my feet on every step up but Nanay still manage to put a few more steps going up. I thought initially that she will wait in the car but not as our curiosity find its way to step up towards the top and get to see and observe the Taoist Temple. Thank God that Nanay is still strong and manage to walk a long mile.

An almost five to six hours Busay tours including the Taoist temple, we decided to eat along Larsian, the “Dampa of Cebu”. We ordered fresh lapu lapu for sinigang and barbecue with lots of “puso” rice. Puso rice is a rice wrapped and boiled n a triangular casing made of woven coconut leaves. After eating our sumptuous meal, we proceeded to the pasalubong area as the next day will be visiting first the Lapu Lapu Shrine in Mactan before heading to the airport back to Manila.

Day 2 September Cebu...Temple of Leah

Day 2. The whole day of our second day in Cebu City is dedicated to just tour Cebu city by car. An eight (8) hour private car charter thru Klook advance booking made us possible to tour Cebu city with ease and comfort specially with Nanay. I have most of my Cebu city wish list “must-see” in our own pace because of the private car. I also appreciate the lobby guard from One Central hotel wishing us to enjoy the tour while also noting the car plate number as soon as we hop inside the private car as if telling us, “Mam, you will be monitored and we will be waiting for you to comeback safely.”

We started our trip towards Cebu’s Taj Mahal…Temple of Leah in barangay Busay in Cebu City. It was told that Temple of Leah was owned by Adarna family and built as a symbol of the undying love and ceaseless devotion to Leah Adarna by his husband. With an entrance fee of P50, you could see how this 5,000 sqm land area with seven storeys high built because of love and devotion. The nine-foot bronze statue of Leah is its main element with a brass plaque on its podium signed by Teodorico Adarna that says “Beloved Wife and Mother: Leah V. Albino-Adarna was chosen Matron Queen of her Alma Mater the University of Southern Philippines. This bronze statue portrays her composure and regal bearing when she was crowned. May the beholder discern her innate beauty, poise, and gentleness.”

“May the beholder discern her innate beauty, poise, and gentleness”. Wow! It is possibly these features of her that captured his heart and love her timelessly and physically manifesting that timeless love by building this architectural design that can withstand time. Daydream while inside the temple and feel the love!

September Cebu City Travel

Today is Mother’s Day year 2020. Finding an inspiration and timing to write, even just a few about my travel, is not so easy for me. Sometimes I blog, sometimes not at all. In honor of Mother’s Day and since we are still in Enhanced Community Quarantine in Manila as well as Cebu City, remembering and documenting about Nanay’s and I recent travel in Cebu City last September is as easy as pie.

Bohol is my mother’s hometown…and Cebu City is just an hour or two Ferry ride. Nope, we did not travel from Bohol but from Manila which is only an hour and 30 minutes flight. Being with Nanay is a breeze for me since she knows the Visayan dialect and I know that she can well relate to the Cebuanos. I am just surprised knowing that this travel inside Cebu City is also her first time. Our Cebu travel is just three days two nights stay. Of course, I have a list with the itinerary in and around Cebu City but I also need to make it more relaxed as I am travelling with a Senior Citizen, my Nanay.

Day 1. We arrive at Mactan-Cebu International Airport at around 8:30am. I made an advance booking thru Klook noting our flight details and our hotel destination. There has been an advance info on the name of the driver and the car detail but there was a last-minute change that made me think twice of truly trusting Klook for our first time travel in Cebu City. I really do not want to play so rigid but I need to be safe than sorry. I still trust God that our travel will be guided and protected, I need to surrender because I will be enjoying the stay.

Our almost an hour ride to the hotel was an ease as Nanay has a Visayan conversation with the driver. It also made me comfortable hearing their exchange of stories living in and out of Visayas. While on the way to hotel, I am already familiarizing myself with my Cebu City goggle map on the phone. It really helps to already see with your own eyes your google map location-destination especially if walking around Cebu downtown is part of the plan.

It is still early to check in at the hotel and so we left our bags in the hotel to walk around Cebu downtown and find the Sto Nino Basilica. I thought, Cebu downtown is just like Manila downtown area but it is far from it as the streets are well kept and clean. I also feel comfortable walking from and along its streets than Manila downtown. Thanks for google map again that I can easily check on the streets and way to Basilica. There are also jeepneys around but I am not familiar yet with the coding. I initially memorize the number codes I saw while we are walking so we could already ride a jeepney back to our hotel.

We attended the noon mass at Basilica and it is just great way to start our travel in Cebu City. We lighted candles and bought souvenirs from the church store. Nanay bought a life size green rosary that lights up in the dark. There are also photos displayed in a patio towards Sto Nino relic that depicts events related to the Christianization of the Philippines through the image of Senor Santo Niño de Cebu. I love Sto Nino as He always reminds me to be humble and be childlike…and to worry less.

We ride a jeepney back to the hotel but as soon as I saw a familiar street, we got off and walk back to our hotel. We rest first in the hotel and had our dinner in the nearby mall.

Bicol...More than Escapades

My vacation in Bicol does not end on Good Friday. Hey, there is always an Easter Sunday!

We travelled back the following day to Ate Fei’s house just in time for swimming at Villa Sotto resort at Castilla Sorsogon. This is to celebrate Ate Fei’s birthday with the family. As usual, children enjoy swimming so much with the warm water pool and having a grandeur time with the adults until about 7pm.

We attended mass for Easter Sunday at St Gregory Church Legazpi City. Thank God that the mass celebration is in English. After the mass, Ate Fei and Phine also accompany me to tour around Legazpi city i.e visit the Our Lady of Guadalupe Shrine, Gaisano mall and Embarcadero. I will always remember the first time to eat the sili ice cream level 1 and 2 at Colonial Grill. Sili ice cream is good although I would not dare try to finish level 2 as I am really not fond of spicy food. Phine also gave me pili nuts directly from their farm. The Farm is almost an hour trek form the main road and thank God that there is a fresh picked buko to quench our thirst. Her husband harvested almost 40 pili nuts for me take as pasalubong. I have also experienced riding at the back of their Carabao, Sinag. Sinag is pregnant at that time and I softly scream as Sinag sway its tail towards its back.

I have never thought of visiting my checklist on my last day at Bicol because I feel that it is more than what I have planned…

…new food that I have tasted : lubi lubi gata, sili ice cream, pili nut ice cream, mazapan, fresh guava juice, kinunot, pinangat

…new places that I have explored : Hoyop hoyopan cave, the chocolate hills in Albay, Jovellar underground river, Kawa Kawa Hill

...new faces I have met and shared happy and memorable moments.

I do not regret staying in Ate Fei’s family with Phine’s family. They are such a sweet, thoughtful, caring, and happy family. I also enjoyed bonding with the children as each of them called me “Ninang”.

It’s been a full 6 days experience in Bicol, the longest out of town I have experienced so far. It is really more than escapades to share. It is really meeting people, feeling their warmth and hospitality, experiencing their traditions, and tasting the best food of the province. I have not expected much about this long vacation but God has given me another “more” to enjoy. Thank you again Lord for experiencing your blessings thru your wonderful creation and the wonderful people that come my way. ;D

Bicol Holy Week at Daraga, Albay

I and my friend, Phine stayed in Balay De la Rama in Albay for a Holy Thursday and Good Friday reflection at Daraga Church. Daraga Church is just a walking distance to/from Balay Dela Rama but for those who are not used to walking, there are tricycles around that can be hired.

Daraga church offers a vantage point of Mayon Volcano. It is one of the most beautiful churches in the Philippines.

The church is also known as the Our Lady of the Gate or the church of Nuestra Senora de la Porteria. The construction of this Baroque style building is done with the use of volcanic materials that makes it even more special and unique. To prevent it from regular exposure the outer was coated with lime stone so that the future generation can still see the beautiful facade of the church to save it from further degrading.

We attend the Holy Thursday mass at 5:30pm with the "Washing of the Feet" until 7:30pm. The only thing that is different now is dialect that is used during the mass as I know little of Bicol dialect and most of the time, I will ask my friend to translate the word I just heard. It is just good to know that no matter what dialect the mass is…it will always be the same. Two words that have been used most of the time and thus retained in my mind…”Kagurangnan” and “Tugang” which means “Lord” and “Brother/Sister”, respectively.

Good Friday hearing of seven last words, sharing and mass reflection were even more a challenge to me as I really have to “hear” the words or plainly “hear-between-the-lines”. I sometimes hear visayans words I am already familiar with. Although, I cannot fully understand, it is really quite heavenly staying in the church from 12nn because of the heavenly voice I am hearing in between the seven last words.

Good Friday procession follows after the mass and Cross adoration. We can see that there are lots of people, including children, who have joined the procession and more are coming in after the mass. I believe that each barangay is with their Patron image in the carriage joining the procession and they are doing this every Good Friday. People coming from the church are also joining the procession as I and Phine are watching the processions from the small patio of Daraga Church.

I could really feel the devotion from the people’s heart especially those joining the procession. I may have not really fully undertand the sharing of each of the people but I could see their faces and feel their hearts. It was really an intimate and meaningful holy week experience.

Bicol Escapades...Kawa Kawa Hill Ligao City

Today I remember to finish my blog on my Bicol escapades. I almost forgot to finish but The Mayon volcano is currently erupting as if getting my attention to finish my blog and to share more of my beautiful holy week experience in Bicol.

Ligao City-Kawa Kawa Hill

It is still a day before holy Thursday but we already visited Kawa Kawa HIll at Ligao City right after Jovellar Underground adventure. Visting kawa kawa hill has been a regular experience for Bicolano's specially during holy week. It is also has become a popular religious site because of the unique, life size statues which depict the fourteen (14) Stations of the Cross. Theses stations are arranged at the slope of the hill overlooking Mayon Volcano. The Carmelites Nuns of the Holy Trinity put up the Divine Mercy and a life-size images of the Station of the Cross in the area. Divine Mercy Shrine and Carmelite monastery is already built at the foot of the hill.

Visiting Kawa Kawa hill is like being with Jesus in each of the life size station of the cross. It is actually bigger the the life-size statues. Each station has its corresponding guides of readings and meditations. I remembered that we are still doing the final three stations of the cross during sunset on the summit with the cool, calming wind and where sunset rays flashed towards the station of the cross.

I have never felt really tired going up the 250-meter-high hill neither have I heard the children complaining going up until the last station. Maybe it is also because the hill offers a lush scenery and serene ambiance. When you reach the summit you will be amazed to see a six-hectare crater and also a breathtaking view of Ligao City.

Kawa Kawa Hill is a really a place for prayer and reflection.

We arrived back home at 9pm already having kinunot and pinangat. Next day will be another day as I and Phine will be in Daraga, Albay for a Holy week observance.

Bicol Escapades…the Tour day (Jovellar Underground River and Sigpit Falls)

The Jovellar Underground River is yet to be discovered by tourists in Albay Bicol. It’s almost an hour of drive from Camalig Albay. Although the place is almost an end of a road...I would say that this is a real find!

We eat first our delicious adobo lunch inside “Salvacion”. Salvacion is the jeepney owned by Kuya Mike and it is been our constant companion throughout our travel. I would say that I have underestimated my travel this day as I only brought an extra shirt and a short. I have assumed that I will just dip my feet into the water and enjoy the view.

A registration is required before you enter the underground river plus a fee for the underground river tour as you will be going inside the cave thru bamboo raft “balsa”. They will also not allow your group without a tour guide so better get one. We have a short trek first before the entrance of the cave. At the entrance of the cave, there is already a swimming area where people jump from a cliff. It is very exhilarating to watch them jump off the cliff and splash deep into the water.

At first, I am hesitant to get inside the cave as the tour guide told us that we will definitely get wet. In addition, I am afraid to get in the boat to cross the cave. Who’s not afraid of going inside the dark unknown? Ate Fei’s just remind me that this is a once in a lifetime experience and besides I was the one who introduce them the place. And yes, I should be excited to experience it myself…setting beside all the fears…disregarding of what I have not, but of what I have at the moment…and be expectant that the view after the rafting is awesome.

We went down through this squeaky bamboo stairs, and got into the bamboo balsa. For just less than five minutes, we cross a 100 meter long quiet river, it as if I am experiencing the famous Palawan underground river. We can see the formation inside the cave through a flashlight of our tour guide. As we get closer, we heard this loud sound of water fall. Slowly as we made our way in, a light started to appear and made us too excited upon seeing this beautiful water cascading towards us. We are so mesmerized by numerous rock formations and just want to immediately play with the cold water. The exit point, as they call it, is actually a meeting place for the river, the cave and the waterfalls.

In order to get across, we also have to go through the water current. With a proper guide, we safely cross and climb rocks just to get to the other side. I would say that this adventure is not really very ideal for unprepared children and senior citizens. You must have that “real adventurer” guts to take the challenges but I can assure that the experience is so worth it. I am just so glad that I have immersed myself into this kind of place.

I am already soaking wet but more prepared to get into the next water falls…Sigpit Falls. We have not used the Balsa anymore but instead we climb up a hill back to the cave entrance to meet Phine who is waiting with our slippers and towels. Mae also experience jumping off the cliff with the tour guide. I have realized that when you trust that at least "One" will be there to watch over you and rescue you when something goes wrong, you will be brave enough to do it. Did I say that there is my "One" that will convince me to jump off the cliff to the river? Whooah...I would dare not. I have to start from the basic first.

Sigpit Falls is about 350m from the underground river and is across the other side where we left Salvacion. This time, its children play time as the place is much safer. I remember that one kid who does not know how to swim, with his vest on, enjoys jumping from the rock to the river with much joy and giggles. At last, those kids that did not join the underground river tour for safety reasons, now enjoys the Sigpit falls.

I will always treasure these “water adventure” moments. I am still amazed by how nature could produce such a wonder! Indeed, God never fails to amaze His people.

Bicol Escapades…the Tour day (Hoyop-hoyopan Cave and Camalig Greenhills)

This day will be a Tour day…a day to tour what I have been planning to visit. A day before this, I have given Ate Fei my list so her husband, Kuya Mike, our ever patient tour driver, can check if he knows the way. Can google, map our way? Well, I have no intention to push what’s all in my paper as long as I enjoy the tour with the whole family.

Hoyop hoyopan cave

Caving…the third that I will get through…first in Sagada, second in Bohol…now in Bicol. Hoyop hoyopan cave is located in Camalig Albay and is privately maintained. Its name was derived from the word “hoyop” which means “blowing of air or wind” in Bicolano. An entrance fee of P50/pax is needed to enter the cave with the cave tour guide. We are just lucky that all of the children are free of the entrance fee as we are almost a dozen.

Tourists are expected to observe the rules inside the cave to maintain its natural form and avoid untoward accidents i.e no touching of stones. The cave is really different from all other caves that I have been through. A claustrophobic person might enjoy this as we surely enjoy the cool, fresh air as the wind passes freely through the different opening in the cave. Of course, nobody else is the perfect man to capture our moments inside the cave than our tour guide as he knows where the “perfect spots” are.

Concrete steps are mounted at the rear of the main entrance and incandescent light bulbs are strategically placed around the cave, making it easy for the visitors to navigate the area. Though, the passageways will test your skill in squeezing, crawling, and kneeling to get through in order to reach the different chambers, including a mini-pond and a dance floor. Inside the cave are wonderful formations of stalagmites and stalactites, as well as hidden sacred knowledge of the life of our ancestors — the early inhabitants of the area. I remember, manong tour guide would relate the dance floor as where parties are held inside the cave as curfew were strictly imposed during the martial law era.

Camalig Greehills (Solong Eco Adventure Park)

Just a few minutes travel away from Hoyop hoyopan cave, we visit the greenhills of Camalig. It is just like the chocolate hills of Bohol. A few hundred steps up the mountain, you can see the numerous hills mountain formation.

The Solong cave was explored for a few minutes by some of our brave companions with just a flashlight, not to mention that most of them are just teens. (",) Perhaps, if you are a real cave explorer, you will enjoy the challenge as they told us that it will take you more than hours to explore the whole part of the cave.

The Beautiful “Magayon” … Bicol Escapades

Mount Mayon or Mayon Volcano. The Local folklore refers to the volcano being named after the legendary princess-heroine Daragang Mayon (English: Beautiful Lady). The cone is considered the world's most perfectly formed volcano for its symmetry,which was formed through layers of lava flows and pyroclastic surges from past eruptions and erosion erupting over 49 times in the past 400 years. It stands majestically at 2,462 meters and is geographically shared by the eight cities and mucipalities of Legazpi, Daraga, Camalig, Guinobatan, Ligao, Tabaco, Malilipot and Santo Domingo.

Astonished by its majestic shape, will fear conquer me by just being alone in this trip? Nope! In fact I was just alone in my airplane trip but not my whole time in Bicol. I planned this trip since last year and of course with all the must “see”, must “experience”, must “eat”, must “buy”, and must “do”. I can never imagine doing all these just by being alone but at least with my long lost best friend, who is now residing in Bicol together with her family and almost near to her sister.

Excitement overflows as it is my first time to be in Bicol area also knowing that I will be with Phine and family for almost a week of stay. It will also be my first to personally meet all of her children and Ate Fei’s children too…well, except my god children with them. It will also be a different “holy week” as this will also be my first to observe and join lenten activities in a province.

They picked me up at Legazpi airport by 7am. We hugged as if time nor distance has never passed between us. We have so many stories to tell and I know that a day is never enough to compensate the lost time. They have already in mind where they would tour me that day but I just have one wish that I would not let pass…to visit the a church in Legazpi before any tour of the day.

St Rafael Church is only three (3) kilometers east of Legazpi Airport in front of Plaza Rizal, Legazpi City. Just a short visit to thank God for the safe trip and wonderful memories and meaningful holy week that will be set me on this province.

CAGSAWA CHURCH RUINS

For almost two centuries the Cagsawa Ruins has stood as a symbol of Bicol region’s impressive landscape, rich history and the people’s strength and resiliency to face and to rise from the ravages of Mother Nature. The 1814 eruption was recorded to be worst eruption of Mt. Mayon. Some 1,200 people who took refuge and sought the sanctuary of the church during the eruption all died when the church was engulfed by the flowing lava.

I will never forget the great shots we have here with my friend. We are playing with the camera phone thru the great hands of the tourist photographer in Cagsawa. He instructed us a lot of poses that will capture the moment and of course, the beauty of Mt Mayon and the Church. For just a minimal tip for taking our pictures thru my camera…we already have these historical shots.

Bacolod City Tour and Silay City

During my Bacolod stay, I always made sure that I attend the morning mass or just visit the Carmelites monastery. It is my way of being grateful for each day that passed and a new bright morning to attend to. It always works to be grateful always..why would not I? A granted prayer request just happened that very early morning! Thank God!

I was left alone on the fourth and last day. Arnie decided to just change her flight to early in the AM to catch up with her birthday celebration with her family. I decided to just continue on the journey as the original flight back to Manila is still 7pm. It is just making the most of what you already have!

After the mass at Carmelites, I immediately proceeded to the remaining itineraries...small walk to the park and municipal hall.

The Capitol Lagoon Park is located at the very heart of the central business district of Bacolod City. The Lagoon is a quick sanctuary to breathe fresh air. They say that the Lagoon is simply at its best in the morning.

That same morning, people of different ages have their physical activities like tai chi and jogging. I also have some small chat with the gardener in charge who happens to once lived in manila.

After breakfast near the park, I went back to the hotel to check out at exactly 10am. It doesn't end there as I still have one courageous act to do...for the first time...going to place I have never been alone...in a city I rarely know. What makes me continue to do so? A big smile and a confident answer from a hotel receptionist made me decide to proceed with joy and peace in my heart...to Silay City!

Thanks to blogs and google map that made it easy for me to travel to Silay City alone without the hassle. Even if I do not understand the Bacolod dialect,, there is just one thing that is common that makes you feel at ease around each other...the Smile!

I arrived in Silay City at 11AM after a 30 minute bus ride from Bacolod city bus terminal. My purpose is to visit the ancestral houses in Silay City and eat a special dessert in the famous El Ideal Bakery.

My first stop is the church of Silay City as I am still thinking where to go first. I have no ancestral houses map and according to the blog I need to go to the tourism office to get the map. There is no signage of the tourism office but I immediately saw the Silay City Hall. I went inside the City Hall to ask for a map of the ancestral houses that I can visit. The City hall personnel was so generous and welcoming enough to accompany me to the tourism office at the other side of the road. The welcome was so warm with their big smiles that radiates thru the heart. I can really feel that I am indeed a special tourist deserving to have a special attention! Thank you Genevieve! After my Silay City tourism office historical tour, I then proceeded to the only open ancestral house for inside tour...the Balay Negrense. Balay Negrense is the 1897 ancestral house of the Gaston family, one of Negros' pioneering sugar plantation owners. There is a entrance fee for the inside house tour but it is just a minimal fee considering that there is a tour guide that shares a story behind each room and corner of the house.

After the Balay Negrense ancestral house tour, I took my lunch for another Inasal meal. Then to El ideal for the Guable pie and pasalubong. I still manage to have a picture of the facade of a few more Silay City ancestral houses. I then proceeded to the airport at 3pm to catch my 7pm flight back to Manila. I still feel ill at ease riding a plane in solo but not that night as God gave me an angel who sat beside me, a mother and a baby.

What a wonderful and meaningful trip! Thank you Lord for an enjoyable and safe trip during our Bacolod stay!

Bacolod Day2 - Mambukal Adventure

The end road of Murcia and serves as a gateway to the Mount Kanlaon volcano. Mambukal has many beautiful sites. Calming and refreshing! Imagine that it has a land area of more than 23 hectares…it is really more than a playground to stay. (“,)

Mambukal has a bath house and a spa and not to mention the Mother Nature hot springs with sulfuric soda water. Of course, I experience the bathe in the hot spring…even being just alone and for a 15 minutes whole body dip. Why wouldn’t I if it is known for its therapeutic treatment esp. to people with body fatigue to relieve stress and relax. Indeed...It is truly relaxing!

Mambukal also has seven falls, the natural springs, and it flows through the center of the resort, feeding the swimming pools and boating lagoon. With a guide, I and June managed to see the first three falls as the way to the fourth falls is already closed for fear of falling debris. It just rained that day, but the rain just ensures us that we get the best view of the falls. (“,) I am happy that I’m in my both feet again climbing mountain to witness God’s wonderful creation. Just imagine that instead of rappelling, stairs were already built and carved to climb up to the next higher falls. You can really feel the energy coming from the waterfalls…gushing thru your face. It is really worth the effort! It is an opportunity that you should never missed when going to Bacolod. ;D

Bacolod Trip - October 2016 Part 1 The Ruins

I have already set my mind that I will be open to the messages that will come my way during my trip to Bacolod. Four days and nights are not that easy knowing that your main purpose of going to Bacolod will not materialize...that is to witness the highlights of the Masskara Festival.

Many times before the scheduled trip, plans and wishes of cancellation came by…Bomb threats in Bacolod during the festival due to the recent event in the Davao Public Market.; Eugene cancelled because of his work trip to Adelaide; our expected date of the event highlights of the Masskara festival were moved which is only after our scheduled Bacolod trip, and Arnie almost change her mind since she must travel to Adelaide the following day after we arrived Manila. Wheeh!

However, I still considered it as a blessing in disguise since there will be no more big crowds on our scheduled trip but only last until Sarah told me about her dream. I got scared and almost feel weak but I wrote the message and reflect on it in a positive way. Then, it seems that it was the beginning of me being open to all the messages, spoken or circumstances, and able to listen and reflect during our Bacolod stay.

So much for the initial emotional reflections…now, it’s time to travel and witness the beauty of Bacolod as it reflects its rich heritage, history, and its nature’s best!

First day - We started the day by a visit to the Carmelites monastery which is just a walking distance from the hotel. We arrived there during the English mass homily. It was a beautiful mass homily reflecting on and knowing that God alone Suffices. After the mass, I met Jun, Arnie’s kababata. June is a professional photographer and works in a call center. Several of his rest hours were allotted just to accompany us during our Bacolod trip.

First stop…The Ruins. A less than 10min drive from Robinson,

The Ruins is owned by the Lacson family. If you just simply look at it, it was really am abandoned building. If not for the restoration and the beautiful garden around it, I wouldn’t consider it an A. Then why is it a landmark of Bacolod? Because of its history, a story that stands the test of time. A story of the family, the wife that is the love of his life and inspiration, of the materials used in building it, and the story of letting it go by sacrificing the house to burn so it will not be used by the Japanese as its headquarter. What is entertaining here is how these were told by PBB Roger. You will remember its story because of him on how he retold the stories. Guess what? Most of the people rented the place for wedding prenuptial photos.😊

A Warm Tagaytay GetAway

I just cannot resist travelling to Tagaytay at least once in a year...but this year I travel and stayed overnight with Nanay, Renzo, Lara, and with Mars. I considered this as a family treat for a pre-birthday celebration.

Tagaytay City: Tagaytay city is one of the country's most popular tourist destinations. Tagaytay city provides a good view of the Taal Volcano. The city is a popular summer tourist destination because of its cool climate due to its high altitude.

Top 5 Places to visit in Tagaytay:
1. Tagaytay Picnic Grove
2. Tierra De Maria
3. Sky Ranch Theme Park
3. Pink Sisters
4. Food Trip

The Picnic Grove is not usually a friendly place for elders as exploring the entire place will require a lot of walking and stair climbing but for Nanay, it is quite different. Nanay just turned 69 years old last August 12 but she is very much used to trekking. I would say much more used to than my nephew and niece. Php50 entrance fee and activities inside that you can enjoy like zipline, cable cars and horse back riding for a fee. You can also find a lot of Tagaytay souvenirs with a good price.

After our sumptuous lunch at Picnic Grove, we checked in an economy hotel for an overnight stay. At 3pm, we continue our "lakwatsa" to Skyranch.

There are a lot of rides that you can enjoy at Skyranch. Renzo and Lara enjoyed the Sky Eye ride, Super Viking s and Drop Tower. Nanay rode the carousel.We stayed there until 7pm where we have experienced a glimpse of sunset and fog by 6pm then Dinner at Mc Donald before we retire to bed at our hotel.

I thought we would just end our getaway that way but I and Mars went to Pink Sisters for the 6;30am mass the following day.

We took another sumptuous lunch at Uncle Cheffy at Nuvali where everyone is happy and have enjoyed the set meal. A good healthy lunch for a good price!

Tagaytay is one of my resting place because of its weather, breathtaking view of taal, and nice food. I will always go back to this place over and over again. It is a warm Tagaytay getaway this year coz this time I'm not alone and thanks to the long weekend where I had a chance to invite them to go out of town. A recently declared "State of Lawlessness" did not prevent me back to my fave getaway...in fact, I just feel safer with less worries on someone that I need to look after to.

Bamboo Biking

I usually spend biking around just near my place on weekend. Today is totally different! I bike with another bike…a bamboo bike!!! Bamboo biking is totally different but safe as it is made of not just an ordinary bamboo.

This is my buddy baby today and the rest of the bike in Bambike Tour in Intramuros.

The Bambike Tour in Intramuros was a relaxed but informative biking experience. I am not really fond of history but this made me review my history in a very fun way. The Bambike tour is a guided bamboo bike tour for historical sites around the walled city, Intramuros. It was a two and a half hours tour but it took us three hours because of the rain showers we encountered while biking. The rain shower is indeed a blessing in disguise because we got to get more information from Rey, our Bambike tour guide. Rey is a very friendly, sport and outdoor savvy, and most of all I would say a humorous but real good history teacher. I had a lot fun of re-learning.

Among other places that we visited are San Agustine Church, Baluarte de San Diego gardens, Escuella Taller, Intendencia Ruins, and Fort Santiago.

Bambike is located at Plaza San Luis Complex near San Agustine Church. It was really worth the ride! I’ve got to really enjoy the informative fun ride and help Gawad Kalinga (GK) at the same time. GK is where part of the proceeds of the Bambike Tour goes.

Bohol Bee Farm...it's like you're into a family provincial vacation to a place you considered home!

As soon as I step into Bohol Bee Farm, I already sensed my longing for a deep relaxation and vacation. The silence is so tempting...I knew I would definitely enjoy being away from the busy city of Manila and be refreshed. I never regret staying here for three days minus the one day Bohol day tour.

We stayed at a "kubo" type room and wait for Beng to arrive before we took our lunch, as she took a different but free flight to Bohol. There is real silence around. You cannot even hear anyone talking outside or walking nearby and what else you can do when you had restless nights before? Sleep! I really had a "power nap"!

This is our first lunch meal order at Bohol Bee Farm. Honey glazed chicken, Grilled fish, their version of soup, natural fresh fruit drinks, and eggplant ensalada. What's so good about this food is that these are all organic food. The vegetable salad with flowers on it...the herbs or spices mixed in the food...all these are home grown at Bohol Bee farm. We thought that the flowers in the salad like bougainvillea are just for decoration only but we found out that it's all edible!

After our meal, we began exploring Bohol Bee Farm. The Farm is real farm with its various plants around the area mostly used as herbs, spices, and ingredients in the meals they served. Another refreshing beauty of the Farm is its seaside beauty. The sound of the waves, the wind touching your face, and the smell of the sea. There is a sunbathing or lounging area for use only for stay-in or Bohol Bee farm guests where you can just dip on the water but never seen anyone swimming coz there is a warning on jelly fish. My two sisters also go for the foot spa pampering session that lasted for almost two hours. While waiting for them, I tour the area alone for some savoring moments...one on one with mother nature. Around Bohol Bee Fram

Walking with reflections is definitely different from trekking and hiking. That time, that moment, you will never have to worry about the time and your safety while you are on the trail. You are secured because you are already on a maintained place really suited for people who just looks for a very good refreshing vacation...so you know you are safe! I still discover some areas around Bohol Bee Farm...some more planting areas, one beehive coz they told us most of the beehives have been destroyed by the recent super typhoon in Bohol, the crafts and livelihood area, different swimming pools, the bakery, and the ice cream area. At night just before we go to sleep, we also had a relaxing full body massage. Every night is a good night sleep and every morning is a good morning as we took our breakfast with natural fruit juices, corn coffee, brown rice, eggs, pancakes, pasta and cassava cereals.

My Bohol Bee Farm Noche Buena was the most memorable Noche Buena I ever had. The sumptuous dinner at the seaside, the soothing music, the laughter, the gifts and Nanay singing while relating her "Come to me" theme song with her late husband.

I really wished at least my parents were here enjoying the refreshing Bohol Bee Farm. I wished they are like Nanay Medila who is always on the go...on the road even at 70+...or maybe I wished I already could have started my own family. I am just thankful how the Distor family welcomed me as their own. They are my Manila family since college.

This has been a real refreshing and memorable Christmas vacation. I thanked God that despite the many odds that happened just before I went to Bohol, God gave me a real super duper Christmas vacation! Jesus... You are the celebrant but You have always been giving me!

Bohol on the Road… (second part of Bohol Christmas Get Away)

The Chocolate Hills is probably the most famous tourist attraction in Bohol. We can never leave Bohol without seeing this unusual geological formation. This is our first Bohol road trip destination with Beng, Ate Cecile,and their mother – Nanay Medila.

We rented a van owned and driven by Manong Pepe who also acts as our tourist guide. We have no planned itinerary beforehand but Manong pepe is so enthusiastic to let us visit all the “must-see” of Bohol. We attended mass first at Bohol Loboc church and we are fortunate enough that the famous Loboc Children’s Choir is singing although in visayan dialect and remembered the words “gugma” and “igsoon”. After that, we head on to chocolate hills with almost an hour travel. Manong Pepe’s enthusiasm never runs out and he is talking all the way, all day about Bohol. I remember he mentioned about the myth of Chocolate Hills about two giants having a fight that went on for days and threw stones and sands at each other that’s why there’s giant mole hills that is scattered throughout the municipalities of Bohol. He also mentioned that it’s called “Chocolate” since when its summer or dry season it turns brown but that time it’s all green…and that’s why we jokingly called it “Green Hills”. We have to go up to the peak by walking in order to have the majestic view of many Chocolate Hills. Going up is tiresome but not to Nanay, at 70+ years old, she can still walk up with a smile and with matching picture takings. There a lot of tourists at that time and each one are so excited about taking their own pictures and so are we.

I still wanted to stay more but we have to move on and maximize our one day Bohol road trip. While on the road, Manong Pepe stop the car and said that we have to make pictures with this man-made forest in Bilar Town with the Mahogany trees and giant ferns…it looks like we are in the twilight movie. Taking pictures in the middle of this road is like capturing an act of courage. It’s a picture I really would treasure.

One thing that always reminds me of my mother during our Bohol trip is her only request to buy Cacao. I always check if there is a Cacao for sale in our every stop over. We have a quick picture taking at the Shiphaus then went to Tarsier Reservation area. I’m just quite disappointed at seeing this little animal…because it is soooo little. We cannot hold it, nor touch it, nor communicate with it. It’s already away from its man-visitors unlike before when visitors can touch or have a closer picture with it coz they told us that they are already protecting the tarsiers. Interesting fact about Tarsiers is that Tarsiers are able to rotate their head 180 to compensate for their immovable eyeballs! I just wanted to see the tarsiers move and jump and hear them sing… but I didn’t…I just wished that they would be just in a more large secluded place where they can enjoy their natural habitat. Just glad that we made it to this place coz this is where I bought my mother’s request of Cacao and one of my favorite…peanut kisses.

We have our lunch at Loboc long river cruise. It’s a buffet lunch and yes we have our good lunch but what is more enjoyable is the soothing melody of music inside the cruise. There is also a music and dance presentation of a group of men, women, and kids in the cruise stopover…I was so delighted to see this with some of the diners joining the presentation. It’s a happy Christmas indeed!

Four more places to go and short time left that‘s why we have a quick visit and picture taking at Blood compact, Old Clarin House, and Old Baclayon church where Manong Pepe show us a hidden picture of Padre Pio at Church façade and there also we lighted up pink, red, and orange candles that represents areas to be prayed over. Lastly, we went to Hinagdanan cave that reminds me of my Sagada adventure at Sumaging cave. This cave is just a short trip inside with touring assistant and there’s already a clean and easy way of getting in. There a lot of cheap items you can buy around this area especially if you are looking at “pasalubong”.

It is almost beyond our travel contract time with Manong Pepe but still he has lot of energy to accompany us. We have dinner together near Alona beach and this is my first time to taste grilled Longanisa Cebu. We went back to Bohol Bee farm at past 7pm and we did enjoy the day. It is a long day…another journey I would never forget!

This is an actual photo at Chocolate Hills during our second day stay in Bohol. Second day is our tour day when we get to know the beauty and serenity Bohol offers. I never thought that Bohol is this fascinating and indeed a real tourist destination not until I enjoy it myself since my last visit here with my mom when I was still in my elementary years. I so love it!

This is the first year when i celebrated away from my parents but with a friend and her family whom i considers "home". Bohol is also a home for me since this is my mom's hometown...although it is...it is still a stranger to me not until we tour it and glad we did. One day is enough to capture this serene beauty! We also visited places like Loboc church with the Loboc children's choir singing in visayan mass, Shiphaus, Tarsier, Hanging bridge, Loboc long river cruise, old Baclayon church, Blood compact, Hinagdanan cave, Alona beach, and Clarin Ancestral house.

We stayed at Bohol Bee farm during our trip in Bohol. Chillax on first day...at our "kubo" and near the sea. Silence is so tempting...I can't help myself but communicate with it. It's indeed a gift after so much hard work.

How can you resist to just staring at this seaside beauty at Bohol bee farm? The horizon of the sea...the sound of its waves...the air sweeping your hair...everything is music! I really want to go back here.

Majayjay...cold but sweet!

Majayjay Falls

I have always remembered Majayjay adventure whenever i would have a cold shower in the morning. There are times i really enjoyed having a cold shower even when its not really hot. Yes, only to remember the times we had so much water that is so cold in a mountain. Majayjay, which is located in laguna, is not really a hiking type of adventure that's why we call it another fun climb. A 15 minute walk is all we need to be at the camping site!

It is summer at that time when we have been in Majayjay. It feels like we are in a resort type of vacation only we have tents as our inn. We do have our overnight stay in our tent and just imagine how cold the water in the early morning...it is freezing!!!

The goddess of Majayjay,..bakit yung iba hindi pa rin nabasa! (",) The fun thing is we don't stay in the water but climb up hill to the falls. It's our nature. Experience is more beautiful if you have pictures in it but i guess memories never fades eventhough it was years ago...the fun, excitement and friendship!!!

Fun Climb at Mt Famy

Mt Famy or Mt Romelo in Siniloan Laguna is just two hours ride from Manila and the closest place we have ever been in hiking last 2002. For beginners, this was mostly recommended because it is considered an easy or minor climb.

Famy is different from our other hiking experience since Famy has so many falls and rivers.

The most memorable place to me in Famy is in Batya Batya. The picture of Batya-Batya at the side, which is one of my treasured photos, reminds me of our group strategies in order to have our way through the top of that rock not by swimming, coz most of us are not very good swimmers, but by just holding on to the stones at the side of the river and another is holding on to a fat stick while the stick is being held by Nads and Norman. Our two men are our heroes!

Finally at the top of Batya Batya but there's more coz we have to cross another river to go up to Sampaloc Falls. Another river is located at our back in the picture.

Here is a picture from the jump off point. Look at my Montanara red bag... he is my best hiking buddy ever! Also in the picture are four of my keppel officemate and my former pna colleague. It has always been more girls than boys especially if it just a fun or minor climb.

This is our complete group picture at the top most hill of Mt Famy with extra.. a dog! I remember we labeled the dog as a picture of our guide and protector coz we have been saved from a group of robbers if not for some blessing in disguise. The blessing in disguise? We are supposed to leave Manila at night but one of our group members is late! We hated being late especially when it comes to our itinerary because we will definitely miss out our planned schedules. Because of the late, we missed the last trip and we have to wait the first trip in the morning else hire a private jeepney just for our group. We have several discussions and fiery exchange of comments until we decided to just spend the night in the office waiting. We then took the first trip in the AM and headed to Mt Famy. It is still dawn when we arrived at the jump off point and I felt the pressure around. Some of us are not already happy even before we started the climb. We are worried that our campsite might not be that good since we are late from our itinerary schedule and therefore loose the best camp site. Silence only gives in at the top hill of Mt Famy. We heard that a group of hikers just before our group has been robbed and many things were taken and some of them get hurt. We immediately realized that if not for the “late” drama we will be the group that has been robbed. It was a real blessing in disguise! This realization immediately changed us and our group is back on trail! Fun climb will always be a fun climb!

Mt Maculot Dayhike

It has been raining these past days and it is just perfect for me to reminisce our only day hike in 2002. The group policy is “no climb” when it’s raining that’s why we always check the weather update days before the climb and on the climb itself. It was not always perfect and we underestimate our day hike that turns into night.

It was a beautiful weather in fact there is no sign or report of any low pressure area and we believe that our Day hike in Mt Maculot would be just perfect. Itinerary has been prepared and it is much different from our ordinary climb coz it would be a traverse trek in just one whole day and that’s a real challenge!

This dayhike was our second climb in Mt Maculot in 2002 and it is when I have conquered my fear of Mt Maculot Rockies and eventually enjoy the spectacular view at that dangerous rockies spot. Our half day itinerary was filled with our ascent using the regular Mt Maculot trail and rockies adventure. We still set up our only tent at the campsite but I remember that due to some time constraint and itinerary schedule, others just prefer to be there watching our things while waiting for us to come back from rockies. We ate our packed lunch together at the campsite and have some sharing on our Rockies experience and again on our Mt Banahaw experience. Other Mt Maculot stories are also on the sides. While we are having our chit chats, I saw a small shell near the tent and I remember having also to found a medium sized shell in Mount Banahaw. We just concluded that if there are shells in Mt Maculot then it has same story as Mt Banahaw where once maybe on thousand years ago, this mountain is also submerge in water. We never run out of stories and enjoyed it but we still have time to catch up and immediately we packed our things to prepare for the descent.

A few steps from the camp site, we could already see the tall and sharp grasses that covered the trail and Nads told us that it seems that the trail has not been used for a very long time or rather a few hikers only tried to take the Mt Maculot traverse. We had a slight hesitation to continue and what happens to be a joke at first becomes a reality!

I didn’t remember going up from the campsite because of that tall grasses not until we saw that we are on a much higher ground and a steep descent is coming our way. When we reached the peak, the rain already started to pour down without any signs and as expected, we have no raincoat. We are day hikers! We had visualized a perfect day so we didn’t prepare for this kind of weather! I can’t count the number of times it rains then it stops for a while then it rains again.

First few steps down were already a challenge since we have to use a rope because it is almost a vertical descent. Sometimes, we also have to use our half body to get in touch with the ground just to make sure we are safe in passing through that slippery and muddy trail. Our two men started to get injured. One got sprained and many times he slipped thru the trail and the other, our sweeper, had his knee pain. We stopped from time to time because of their injuries and to make sure everyone is in sight and nobody is left behind. I was already praying Psalm 23 coz it’s already been two hours or so of descent and we are getting nowhere. We didn’t expect that it would take this long to go down from Summit campsite. We even encountered a two trail that requires decision on which trail to take. Is it left or right? There is no sign in fact, most visible is the right but we decided based on our Mt Banahaw experience that when in confusion of trail going down, always take the left road. Maricel took the courage to take a look of the left trail and indeed she shouted us that there is a trail.

We are already hearing conversations echoes and we felt that we are almost near the jump off point with just a few more steps. However, we realized that we are still at the top when we saw another mountain across and that’s even after so many hours of descent. We are so frustrated and it is already dusk and we have only one small flashlight and estimated to last for a few hours only. We begin to make inventory to check if we can stay there but it is not safe since it is not a campsite and we just trust that little flashlight and the bright moon could lead us back down and return home safe and sound. What made us hopeful is the Grotto across the mountain. We had a short visit to the Grotto and prayed silently that God will see us through in this difficult and seems to be unending trail. The trail from Grotto going down is exposed and has cemented stairs so we don’t have problem on the trail tracking even though it is already dark. We do not need to worry about the time but our two injured men so we have to stop from time to time.

It was very late at night when we reached the jump off but it was really a great relief! Yes, it was another freedom! We decided to go to Maricel home in Taal instead of going back to Manila so we can have our rest and fix our self. We are tired and hungry and the first thing we do upon arrival in Maricel’s home is to get a good shower and change our wet and dirty clothes and hung it dry. We still manage to share on the day experience with Maricel’s family and told us that we are lucky that we didn’t get lost. Maricel and Nads also shared their creepy experience during our descent. Maricel really didn’t found the missing trail all by herself but she somehow saw someone who passed by in the middle of the tall grasses that made her realize that there is really a trail. Nads also shared that while being a sweeper he saw a light focusing on our way but he knows that there is no one at his back. Maybe there are mountain spirits but I believe that Angels are spirits too! I just thanked God that although there are injuries, we are still safe and sound! Even if our Day trek turns into night…the night has its moonlight!

Mount Maculot...Fun and thrilling!

Mount Maculot is located in Brgy Poblacion Cuenca Batangas. We have two or three climbs up there in 2002 simply maybe because the climb as we often call it is always a "fun climb". Rockies is my favorite spot. The picture tells it so! It was a shot made after we have overcome a cliff and a moving rock. "I AM FREE!!!", a shout I would never forget!

Mount Maculot climb is our second climbing experience, a month after the first BIG climb at Mt Banahaw. We have now our guide who usually climbs Mt Maculot even on just a day hike. Yes, you can climb Mt Maculot even on a day hike! It was just a two hours trek up the mountain if you will be using the usual trail to the summit. I admit that I am still ill-at-ease at that time coz the fear of what just happened in my first climbing experience still creeps within. But this time, we are prepared!

We have checked our things, I have brought my first ever Montanara red hiking bag. Helen also bought the same bag with gray color. Those first timers, our officemates who had been curious enough to go because of our Mt Banahaw stories, are bringing backpacks. We had a pre-climb meeting and assignments and checklists are also given. I remember almost every essential things that are needed in the climb were mentioned, the tents and how many can it accommodate, the hiking stove, a swiss knife, an extra shirt, sunblock, bottled water at around 2 liters each, canned goods, rice, trail food. It is also my first time to hear about the earth pad and the proper way to put all that in your hiking bag. Purpose: Distributing weight and for comfort and safety.

It was really a fun climbing experience at Mt Maculot. No stiff rock just slippery trail because of the dry leaves scattered around the trail. We had a great time climbing up especially when I see the reactions and actions of the first timers. What's really fun about our going up is that Janet, who is very consistent in her beauty regimen, wears make up and I think she also brought an umbrella. (",) Well, you know the rest is history! We also had a great time at the summit, stories and many more stories! The view at the top? It is breathtaking! I could really appreciate the beauty it shows! The view of the other mountains, Taal Volcano, the river, the green fields, the birds, the breeze of the wind...and the voices of the people in the summit! Everything is beautiful!

Rockies is one of my Mt Maculot challenge. My first time to go there was not a success because I was overwhelmed by the fear of falling and my feet slipping. All I have to do was to just watch their courage as they go to the most beautiful Rockies spot. After that first fun climb, I regret about it! I failed because I have not tried at all! I then promise myself to at least give it a try and trust that my feet would bring me to the place safely. My second time try, was a success! The picture above was my second try. All along, while I was going on that cliff, while holding my companion's hand, my heart was beating fast and I could almost hear it. After that, all I could do was shouting...I AM FREE!!! I am free because I know I have overcome my fear of heights...I have overcome my fear thoughts...I have overcome my weak myself!

finale...Durungawan

Six hours! Six hours passed before we finally finished the climb up to Durungawan. The first thing that I expected to see is the store with overflowing food waiting for us to devour! It was a promise meant to be broken! No food and no stores! But still we are fortunate that a group of young students stayed for a while at Durungawan and they are currently cooking their food! We shared our food. We still have canned goods left, the remaining food we reserved for the summit. I actually don’t remember eating the canned goods but for the first time in my life….I ate rice with salt and grilled onion! I never mind my food but just to satisfy my hunger. Immediately after we ate, others started to lie down in the tent of the young students. I saw a buddy sitting at the edge of the cliff looking at the majestic view of the Mt Banahaw summit. I sit beside him and stared at the beauty of the mountain! The cold wind and the surroundings ease my body pain and for a while I forgot all the hardships we’ve been through while climbing up. I also lie down to rest but just for while since the group of young students started to inform us that they will be going down to Kinabuhayan in a while and have to packed their things including the tent. I didn’t hesitate to respond that we will also be going down with them but others in our group still wanted to continue resting. I insisted on joining with the group of students since they know the trail going down to Kinabuhayan and besides they have their strength to guide us through. Finally, we will all be going back to Kinabuhayan!

Going down is as hard as going up. I have to use my knees to control my steps. The pain almost stop me most of the time but a young student told us that we should not be minding it so I started to run down the trail thru my buddy’s help. It is effective! The more I enjoy it, the easier my steps become. I even saw the young students playing around and fell but they are just laughing about it. What a sight! Life is still beautiful! It’s already getting dark and we have only one flashlight and a “gasera”, which was given by an old man we met while climbing up. The two things lighted our way down but still the creepy sound around bothers me and my buddy even adds up to my fear when he told me that a certain tree in Mt Banahaw is a home to “Kapre”. I started to pray in silence and believe that no one can harm us because my Lord is the Lord of all lords…God of the living and the dead! I believe and have faith that He is good and is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow and no matter how I have been so busy minding my own life…God is just right there seeing me even in the dark or maybe even walking with me in the midst of darkness until I would feel him again.

We reached Kinabuhayan faster than expected. We didn’t expect that we can still have our things intact in the tent since it’s already very late at night and somebody might have stolen our things but God is good! Nobody touched our things and our tent! No trace of someone getting in to steal! Indeed, it is a holy mountain! It is still God’s place! We immediately packed our things and went back to Manila. We are so exhausted as we travel back to Manila. Everyone is quiet and asleep until we reached Manila.

The pain was still there the next morning but I was happy that we are alive and nobody was hurt. I took a day off and that’s when my mother visited me at the boarding house. She told me that they are very worried about my whereabouts because they cannot contact me and then awhile later she called my father to tell him that I’m ok. We have our lunch together and there I started to tell my mother about my mountain experience. The story telling doesn’t end there. We shared it to our officemates and friends. We have a post climb meeting where lots of realization came in. One major realization that I cannot forget from an atheist hiker friend is that…it is God’s providence that saves us! I don’t know if they were converted by the experience but I just want to believe so because they started to speak about God. It was very unlikely that…we met the hikers going down using the path going up and become our food source, an old man we met that gave us “gasera” that we thought we don’t need coz it is still morning, and a group of young students in the summit still cooking their food and as if they are angels sent by God to feed us and guide the way down. All these are blessings that only God can plan and provide! I thank God so much because this became the start of my deep longing to renew my spiritual life.

Do you think this experience stops us from climbing again? No! especially knowing after that Mt Banahaw is one of the major climb! First climb… First major climb! It was a suicide we don’t know! We planned to climb another mountain again, this time with real hikers with hiking gears, itinerary, and warm ups. There are no failures only lessons learned! In fact, my experience in Mt Banahaw is one of my treasured memories. I have not written it until now. It was stored in my mind and in my heart! Every time I am experiencing life difficulties, I would always play the scene going up…no matter how hard my steps are… Don’t forget to breathe! Mind one step at a time! ...soon it will be over and I will reach the top!

Going up...Durungawan

The excitement from last night’s long talk and chitchats still lingers as we woke up and start to prepare to go up Durungawan. Being prepared to a climb to Mt Banahaw summit, Durungawan, was not really in the vocabulary of the girls group but we all entrusted everything to the boys whom we know are experts on this type of adventure besides this is our first time and we don’t have anything to contribute and give but trust them.

We left our things in the tent. I brought some cash, some candies, a towel and nothing else. No trail food or bottled water. Cash would be our means to buy food and water along the trail same in Sta Lucia where several mini stores are along the way. I also remembered them packing the food from last night, bringing big bottled water so we can still save money. They also bought bread for our trail food which also serves as our breakfast.

We started to move up to the trail and we expect to be there at Durungawan in four hours. First expected stop is at Kuweba ng Diyos Ama. After an hour, we then ate our breakfast trail food but when I started to ask for the left over food last night, they told us that they have not brought them coz it’s already spoiled. Our trail food is already consumed and water is already half empty. We still have a long way to go but we promised to buy food and water once we see a store along the trail. After more than two hours of walk, unfortunately, no store in sight! Our money is useless! The leader of the group began to decide to go back but most of us pushed him to continue the way up to the summit. There were several discussions way up and each step is not anymore filled with happy faces but tiredness, paleness, and thirst. We don’t anymore see the beauty around us, we forgot to appreciate the mountain and I don’t remember the trail except when it’s stiff, it’s rough, or it’s hard coz we have to climb up the rock using a rope. There is only one thing that made me remain hopeful…the LORD is my Shepherd!

I began singing the Lord is my shepherd in tagalog. I clearly remember the lyrics since that is my favorite song when I was a member of a Chapel choir in our barangay during my high school days. I also started to think and reflect on what just happened that I deserve things like these. First, going out without the knowledge of my family means I might not be able to return as expected and nobody will worry for me. Second, of trusting too much and not even thinking of my own safety. Third, if Helen, my officemate whom I just invited, would be hurt then I will be responsible. Several more entered my mind as we quietly move up. Our strength slowly deteriorates, our feet and muscles aching. Just glad that my buddy partner never gave up my hands and continue to help me. I was so hungry that I shouted to the mountain… “Pabili ng Pagkain!” A minute later, the buddy group in front of us found a bread still packed in plastic and they gave us a piece share. I only smell the bread then ate it right away. We would also have not survived the six hours hike to the summit if not for the hikers we met while they are going down to Kinabuhayan. They gave us their remaining canned goods, eggs, and biscuits. We have satisfied our thirst and refill our bottles at Kuweba ng Diyos Ama. The water was very satisfying and thirst quenching, so sweet and cold. But all these were not enough for us. The last hour to the summit was very difficult the only thing that we can hear is our breathing. I am already counting my slow steps. I just prayed that I or anyone else will not faint so there would be no additional burden. I began to fight for my life and listen to the motivating words of my co group in front of us shouting… “Malapit na! Nakikita ko na! Sa taas maraming pagkain!” Hope made us continue walking up the summit! I remembered being pushed thru my back during my last steps just before finally setting my feet to the ground of the Mt Banahaw Durungawan!

Kinabuhayan...

We have a long walk from Sta Lucia to Kinabuhayan. Most of the people we see that afternoon of Black Saturday are already on their way home but our group is different, we felt that it just started. While on our way to Kinabuhayan, we rest for a while in a “free coffee” along the way and an unusual conversation took place with the person in charge of the free coffee stand. When she found out that we are on our way to Durungawan, she initially asked our group, “Bakit kayo umaakyat sa bundok? Hinanap niyo ba ang Diyos sa tuktok ng bundok?” (Why are you climbing mountain?Are you seeking God in the mountain summit?). It was a challenge question that made us all silent for a while and made us think the real reason why are we going up the mountain. As for myself, it was indeed my quest! I hope to see and feel closer to God in the summit. The conversation also triggers another revelation from our new found hiker friends…most of them are an atheist. They are catholics by birth but they don’t practice it and they don’t believe in Christian practices. I haven’t felt nor noticed it from them coz most of the time they would participate silently when there are spiritual rites at Sta Lucia. My motivation and strength to continue climbing Durungawan started to slow down and fear grips me in again. Fear of something bad that might happen to us since most of our companion do not believe in God. I wanted to back out but I have no good reason to say it so there is no turning back!

When we arrived at Kinabuhayan, we immediately set up our tent and cook our dinner. We started to talk of all the places that we will go through while climbing Durungawan. The Salaming bubog, Cristalino, Kuweba ng Diyos Ama, A river with two colors, one white and one red, and all the majestic sceneries above. Mount Banahaw is indeed a Holy Mountain with its places named after mystical names. I felt recharged again, my motivation? To see all these with my eyes! Can’t wait till tomorrow am to start the climb to summit…Durungawan.
