This week, we learn that depriving cancer cells of sugar helps them survive chemotherapy, unpack why some people keep their cancer diagnosis a secret and discover a protein that promotes tissue regeneration and suppresses colorectal cancer.

Cancer cells gobble up sugar to fuel their growth but the glucose in the tumour microenvironment becomes depleted as the cancer spreads. (Hybrid Medical Animation/Science Photo Library)

Sugar starvation helps cancer survive chemo

Once cancer cells have used up most of the glucose in their microenvironment, they rewire their metabolisms to require less fuel and are therefore less vulnerable to chemotherapies that target a fuel-production pathway. To sustain fast growth, cancer cells produce molecules called pyrimidines, which in turn help generate building blocks called uridine nucleotides. Glucose is needed to convert uridine nucleotides into useful molecules, and in a low-gluclose environment, the cancer cells start to restrict their use of uridine nucleotides. This lack of dependence on this fuel source makes the cancer cells particularly resilient to attack by certain chemotherapy agents such as raltitrexed that block the fuel-production pathway.

Gut-healing protein suppresses cancer

Regeneration is a double-edged sword in biology: healing damaged tissue reduces the risk of health issues such as cancer, but allowing cells to rapidly proliferate also raises the risk of cancer. A protein called liver X receptor turns this into a win-win scenario by regenerating damaged gut tissue while simultaneously stamping out colorectal cancer. Researchers sequenced many individual cells and used living 3D models called organoids to determine the role of liver X receptor in tissue repair, and then used mouse models to demonstrate that activating this protein decreased the growth of tumours.

Valine dietary restriction must be 'just right'

Starving cancer of the essential amino acid valine is one way to kill it, but the degree of dietary restriction needs to be just right to suppress tumour growth without causing harmful weight loss. The growth of colorectal tumours stalls when mice are fed a diet containing 0.41% valine. Dropping the valine concentration down to 0.16% shrinks tumours, but it also causes the mice to lose up to 50% of their body weight.

Cell posse protects anticancer T cells

Immune cells are surrounded by friendly cells that help them fight lung cancer. Neighbouring fibroblastic reticular cells create a nurturing environment for T cells near lung tumours and along the paths that T cells normally travel, allowing them to mount an effective immune response. Destroying this network of supportive cells lowered the activity of T cells and increased tumour growth in mice.

Why people keep their cancer a secret

When speaking to colleagues and students who have had cancer, Anna Schueth was surprised to learn that almost all initially kept their diagnosis to themselves. "For some people, this secrecy is because they do not want to be seen differently from their colleagues and peers," writes Schueth, who is a cancer researcher and mental health advocate. Explaining a cancer diagnosis at work is energy-draining and can take a toll on one's mental health. Even after cancer is treated, "life is often far from back to normal", with the fear of recurrence and the need for lifelong monitoring. However, pretending everything is fine can also be an emotional burden for people, and sharing personal cancer stories helps to break down stigma and promote mental health.

NIH faces big changes under Trump

The US National Institutes of Health (NIH) — the largest funder of biomedical research in the world — looks certain to undergo a major overhaul in the coming years. Robert Kennedy, who president-elect Donald Trump has nominated to run the NIH's parent agency, says that, if confirmed, he intends to pause NIH research into infectious diseases and replace 600 employees. Cancer research and former NIH head Harold Varmus was "alarmed" by Kennedy's remarks. "We may need congressional republicans and even democrats who are traditional supporters of NIH to speak up for the agency," he says.

Это навык, который формируется из накопленного опыта и системного подхода.

❗️ Когда опыта недостаточно, «интуитивные» решения скорее запутают, чем помогут.

Эмоции могут заставить Вас:
🟠 Войти в сделку во время хаотичной волатильности.
🟠 Закрыть позицию раньше времени из-за страха или неуверенности.

Без чёткой стратегии интуиция превращается из союзника во врага.

Как не попасть в ловушку собственных эмоций?

1️⃣ Всегда работайте по системе. Анализируйте данные, а не полагайтесь на внутренний голос.
2️⃣ Позвольте опыту расти. Настоящая интуиция приходит только после множества решений, ошибок и их анализа.
3️⃣ Действуйте размеренно. Спешка часто приводит к убыткам.

👍 Чем больше Вы контролируете свои эмоции, тем надёжнее становится интуиция. Она перестаёт быть хаотичной и начинает работать на Вас.
