Gameloft's Asphalt 5 - best racing app for iPhone?

Earlier this month Gameloft released Asphalt 5, the much anticipate racing game for iPhone. Already in the App Store many are saying this is the best racing game available on the platform. Having played it, I can hardly disagree.

Palm Pre WebOS 1.3.1 is now available

For you Palm Pre users out there, a new update is now available. The new 1.3.1 update provides many new updates including:

Yahoo! now appears as a Calendar/Contacts/instant messaging synchronization account.

You can forward a text or multimedia message by tapping the message > Forward.

A new option is available for restarting the phone: press and hold power > Power > Restart. The prior restart method (Device Info > Reset Options > Restart) is still available.

Widescreen videos (including YouTube) now display in widescreen mode on the phone by default, instead of being cropped.

If you tap to play a YouTube video embedded on a web page, the YouTube application launches and the video plays in the app.

You can select a unique ringtone for new message alerts: Open Messaging > application menu > Preferences & Accounts > Sound > Ringtone.

While listening to a song with album art displayed, you can tap the screen below the art to display a playback slider. Dragging the slider jumps forward or backward in the song.

Windows Marketplace for Mobile gets a significant update

Last night the new Windows Marketplace for mobile got a significant update that addressed some issues the store was having since its launch last month.  First there is a new portal for developers to submit their applications and they are taking steps to solve some piracy issues that were discovered shortly after Marketplace launched.

For end users, you can now browse the Marketplace from your computer which gives you a much richer experience.  Further, if you purchase an app on our PC and your Windows Phone is connected it will automatically download and install to your phone.

The Marketplace app is still only available for Windows Phones running 6.5 but support for 6.0 and 6.1 is expected by the end of the month.

Review of Rock Band for iPhone

Rock Band has become one of the most popular games available for any gaming platform. The Electronic Arts franchise is available on every popular game console out there - XBox, Playstation and Wii - and last month became available for iPhone and iPod Touch users. The game, which allows you to play there different instruments or sing vocals in a band, provides a rich experience even on the smaller iPhone platform. Controls are similar to that of the console versions of the game making it a quick learn for those who already play Rock Band. Urbanspoon has released their ever popular iPhone application for Blackberry. The application allows you to find restaurants near you using the classic "slot machine" style of Urbanspoon. You can also select by neighborhood, cuisine or price to do a more refined search or simply shake your Blackberry Storm and it will come up with something random.

The app works on other Blackberry's but the Storm is the only one that supports the random shaking.

The new 1.1.1 version includes a long list of new features including the ability to integrate with Facebook, a nearby tweet column (so you can see those who use TweetDeck near you), landscape composing of tweets and many other improvements and fixes. This version in my opinion is much closer to their desktop version - which I use and like.

Review of the NASA App for iPhone

One of my fondest childhood memories happened on April 21, 1981. That was the launch of STS-1, the first Space Shuttle mission in NASA history. I remember it because it was the first significant space event in my life (I don't really remember Apollo-Soyuz in the mid-70s) and my parents actually let me stay home from school so I could watch the launch live. I've been fascinated with NASA and the United States space program since I can remember and as an adult, this has changed very little. Thankfully there is a great application for iPhone and iPod Touch users directly from NASA that allows you to keep up not only with the Shuttle program but every major mission that the space agency has going on it. Best of all it's free! If you are interested in human space travel like me, the NASA app for iPhone is a no-brainer to go and get.

A note to Apple regarding the App Store

Yesterday it was announced that the Apple App Store now has over 100,000 applications available to download.  That's an insane number and more than likely only about 10% of them actually sell with any strong numbers.  The point is though that you can, literally, find any app for anything.

My problem is that searching the App Store is a beat down.  There is no real way to search by keyword effectively or find all the shiny new stuff.  Sure you have the New section when you first open up the App Store but the reality is it is often out of date.  In fact I have found the App Store app on my iPhone is more current than iTunes!

So Apple, you have a great ecosystem here but it needs a bit of help.  Develop the search function a bit better in the App Store so we can find what we are really looking for in it.

Shop at Target? There's an App...

Some of the big news floating around the interwebs this morning is that WalMart released their 1.0 version of their iPhone App. Personally I'm not a big fan of WalMart but I am of Target. So I did a bit of digging and BLAM! There is a Target app!

The app, in version 3.1.1 now, gives you weekly sales information for your area, helps you find products in various categories or departments and can help find the closest store to you. Even better, it support landscape mode - one of my pet-peeves with many apps these days.

The really cool thing is the market data in the app is also real time, not delayed like the vast majority of other apps.

Review of TaskTask for iPhone

Task management, be it for work or home, is a critical part of most people's days. Knowing what you need to get done and for whom not only makes life a lot easier, but it also helps cut down on life's little surprises related to "oops, I forgot that!" The iPhone does not have a native task management application, a significant drawback in my mind. Fortunately there are several task applications available in the App Store, my favorite being From Ryan Gregg. Gregg's TaskTask allows you to synchronize your Tasks from Exchange to your iPhone and allows you to edit, complete and create new tasks. All that you do within TaskTask is synchronized back to Exchange, keeping your task list in perfect shape. TaskTask is well worth the $4.99 price of admission.

The iPhone according to comScore, makes up 32.9% of all touchscreen phones in the United States. What's even more scary, the next closest competitor is only 8.7% of the market.

Scary much?

It is clear that the iPhone has become the standard for everyone. Now it is just a matter of who will compete with them. Will it be Motorola and the DROID or will it be HTC and the HD2? It's a great question and even more fun to watch!

If there was any question or doubt that a services company could benefit from having a mobile app, let the folks at Pizza Hut eliminate that doubt for you. Their mobile app, which was developed by imc2, has generated an impressive $1 million dollars in sales since it was released 3 months ago. Now there is no way to know exactly how much more business the app generated for Pizza Hut but it is clear it generated some new business that they wouldn't have gotten otherwise.

I've used the app personally and it is a breeze to use - makes ordering a pizza no matter where you are easy.

The ubber popular screen locking appliction for Windows Phone, S2U2, has been updated in a big way. The new 2.10 version has a massive number of updates and bug fixes. Some of the new features include:

- show Caller/Sender pics on the missed calls/message pop-up
- added option to show Active or Due Today tasks on the unlock screen
- mouse support for the Omnia
- new graphics
- multiple bug fixes

As always, S2U2 is a freeware application so there is no warranty expressed or implied. I've used it for years though and have never had a problem. S2U2 runs on QVGA, VGA, WVGA devices running Windows Mobile 5.0 or higher.

Most company's have standardize their documents using the Microsoft Office suite which is great for Windows Phone users (and a huge advantage for that platform), but for iPhone users, you are out of luck. Sure you can view things but you can't edit them. That's where Data Vis comes in for iPhone owners. Their Documents to Go application allows you to synchronize Word and Excel documents or create them on your iPhone, make the platform highly functional in an enterprise environment. Further, you can view PowerPoint, PDF, iWorks and other document formats all in this one powerful application. Bing has updated their mobile portal and added several new features:

* Flight Status - enter the airline and flight number and you get the departure/arrival information

* NFL - enter a team or player and see upcoming games, stats and score. If the game is on you can get real-time stats (in the U.S. only)

* Touch device optimization - specifically for the Zune HD, G1, Imagio and Ominia

Still no word on a new Bing application for Windows Phones but the portal should help in the meantime.

Apple updates Remote app in the App Store

With the release of iTune 9.0.2 and Apple TV 3.0, Apple also updated their Remote application in the App Store as well. This application, which allows you to control your Apple TV, has been updated to support the new 3.0 Apple TV software as well as fix other issues. With Remote you can control the music on iTunes or Apple TV, see Album artwork on your remote, create Genius lists, edit playlists, search your iTune library and control your AirTunes speakers and Apple TV. Pretty cool eh?

This application does work with either PC or Mac to control iTunes. You just need your iPhone or iPod Touch on the same wireless network as your PC/Mac.

Apple releases iTunes 9.0.2

Yesterday Apple released a small update to iTunes. The new 9.0.2 version, about a 14MB download if you are upgrading or a full 92.8MB if you are first-time installing, fixes a few bugs, adds support for Apple TV 3.0 and gives you the option of a dark background for Grid View.

Sadly however, it does appear this update once again breaks synchronization for Palm Pre owners. Several reports from blogs around the Interwebs seemed to point to the issue coming back up much as it did with the original 9.0 release. If you are a Pre owner, do some homework before upgrading to make sure everything is a-okay. iPod and iPhone users should experience no issues.

The NBA launched their new League Pass Mobile application in the App Store and it provides plenty of features and interaction for you NBA fans. With this application you can watch over 40 NBA games live each week as well as view full game replays up to 48 hours after the game (national blackout rules still apply however). You also get daily highlights, live player stats for every game, live scores, send game stats via email, Facebook or Twitter and set reminders to alert you on events with your favorite team.

The app is $39.95 and gives you all this access for the entire 2009-10 season.

Last week during the launch of Windows 7, Microsoft CEO Steve Balmmer was in The Netherlands discussing the efficiency gains through Microsoft technologies.  My good friend Remo Knops - the same guy who writes for MobilityMinded - was at the event and has posted a recap of Ballmer's presentation and added a few photos as well.

It's a good read and it does give you a good vision of how Microsoft sees the world.  One thing is for sure:  If you have counted them out in any regard you may want to think that through again.

I have said it before but I'll say it again: I travel a lot. While my travel in 2009 has been cut back significantly, I'll still reach my status level with American Airlines and with Hilton Hotels. In fact, as I write this, I'm in a Hilton hotel in Baltimore, MD. Traveling a lot means that I'm in airports a lot. This isn't a problem when I'm in my home airport, Dallas/Fort Worth International, but does become a challenge when I'm in a new airport that I haven't been to in a while or for the first time. Where do I eat? Where is the Admiral's Club? Where is the nearest bookstore? Sure I can look this up in the terminal but having it with me all the time, especially if I am having to change terminals, is much more convenient.

MobilityMinded discusses Windows Mobile 6.5 on the HTC Snap

My good friend Remo Knops over at MobilityMinded has published a great article on the newly released Windows Mobile 6.5 upgrade for the HTC Snap.

The Snap has become Remo's primary device and he has stated from the very early days that he loved the device. When the Snap's 6.5 upgrade was released he was one of the first to get it loaded up.

The results? He seems pretty positive about the upgrade although he's not exactly thrilled with the browser behavior (he discusses that in the article).

As you would expect, Remo has plenty of screenshots to go along with the review so you will get a good feel for how things look on a non-touchscreen device.

Last week NASA launched their official app for iPhone and it is spectacular! The app, free for download, allows you to access current and past mission information, view images and video from certain missions and gives you the latest news from the space agency.

If you are a NASA fan (one of my best memories was when my parents let me stay home from school to watch the very first shuttle launch) then this is an app you need to go get.

Facebook has launched a new mobile website that is optimized for touchscreen. The new site has bigger targets for touching, making the mobile experience a bit better for users than the old mobile site, http://m.facebook.com. This new site is a welcome sight for Windows Phone users. The Facebook app for Windows Phone is not very robust and is still pretty buggy. This should make life a bit easier.

There are a lot of card games available for iPhone users and many of them are pretty good. One of my favorites however is one that I reviewed on Windows Phone earlier this year: Handmark Solitaire. Handmark provides you with 12 different solitaire games that range from ones that are easy to play while others are much more difficult. Of course there is a level of luck with any solitaire game and Handmark's version is no different. But with great graphics, easy controls and a trophy room that rewards you with card backs among other things, Handmark has a real winner that will keep you playing for hours.

Microsoft FY10 1st Quarter Results

REDMOND, Wash. — Oct. 23, 2009 — Microsoft Corp. today announced revenue of $12.92 billion for the first quarter ended Sept. 30, 2009, a 14% decline from the same period of the prior year. Operating income, net income and diluted earnings per share for the quarter were $4.48 billion, $3.57 billion and $0.40 per share, which represented declines of 25%, 18% and 17%, respectively, when compared with the prior year period.
These financial results reflect the deferral of $1.47 billion of revenue, an impact of $0.12 of diluted earnings per share, relating to the Windows 7 Upgrade Option program and sales of Windows 7 to OEMs and retailers before general availability. Adding back the deferred revenue, revenue totaled $14.39 billion, a 4% year-over-year decline, and EPS totaled $0.52 per share, an increase of 8% over the same period of the prior year.

“We are very pleased with our performance this quarter and particularly by the strong consumer demand for Windows,” said Chris Liddell, chief financial officer at Microsoft. “We also maintained our cost discipline, which allowed us to drive strong earnings performance despite continued tough overall economic conditions.”

Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 launched globally on Oct. 22 as anticipated. Also during October, Microsoft released Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 to manufacturing and in July announced a strategic partnership with Yahoo! Inc. to provide search results for their global properties.

“The worldwide launches of Windows 7, Exchange Server 2010 and Windows Server 2008 R2 are exciting milestones for Microsoft, our partners and customers,” said Kevin Turner, chief operating officer at Microsoft. “We are pleased by the early positive response we are receiving for these products.”

Business Outlook
Microsoft is reducing operating expense guidance to $26.2 billion to $26.5 billion, for the full year ending June 30, 2010.

Management will discuss first-quarter results and the company’s business outlook on a conference call and webcast at 7:30 a.m. PDT (10:30 a.m. EDT) today.

Bug fix: Fixes connectivity issue many T-Mobile users were experiencing when downloading timelines.

Bug fix: After a re-tweet, the highlighted tweet would be lost, and the newest tweet would be highlighted. Fixed this.

Improved: Tapping on a user's picture in the profile or tweet window will show a large picture of the user.

My friend Remo over at MobilityMinded has posted a great review of the latest game from SPB Software, SPB Quads.

The game, designed for Windows Phones with a touchscreen, is highly addictive (trust me, I know) and is played by creating a square of four blocks of the same color. The bigger the square the more points you score.

Over at pocketnow.com, Brandon has posted a detailed review of the new neoTouch S200 from Acer. This new Windows Phone has a 1GHz Snapdragon processor coupled with 512MB of ROM and 256MB of RAM.

Brandon has a lot of praise for the neoTouch S200 but he does have some concerns as well, most notably around the quality of the ROM build. Hopefully Acer will address that soon.

GSM Palm Pre comes to O2 Germany

Palm has announced that the Palm Pre will be exclusively available from O2 Germany. This European version of the Pre will be GSM, sporting tri-band 2G and dual-band 3G (UMTS/HSDPA).

What's interesting is that the phone itself is unlocked and SIM-free so customers of other networks like T-Mobile and Vodafone can actually get the phone and use it.

Over at Just Another Mobile Monday, Doug released his latest review for the iPhone. This time he covered Galactic Bowling. The game is a bowling game with, erm, a galactic flare. The game, which has multiple modes of play, has great graphics and intuitive controls according to Doug. He does however have a few challenges with the game, the least of which is it is too easy to win sometimes.

My good friend Doug over at Just Another Mobile Monday (JAMM) was one of the first people I know that pre-ordered his Zune HD a few months ago.  Now he has had it a few weeks and has put together a great review of this highly anticipated and highly received mobile media player.

As you would expect, Doug has plenty of shots of the Zune HD, both the device itself and the user interface.  As you look through the pictures and you see what looks like Windows Phone 6.5, yes, you are right.  The UIs are the Zune HD and Windows Phone 6.5 are strikingly similar.

Doug covers virtually every feature on the new Zune HD and points out the good and the bad with each one of them.  It is one of the best reviews of the Zune HD I've seen so far.

Review of Firemint Flight Control for iPhone

If you have followed ClintonFitch.com you know I'm not much of a game reviewer. I usually try to focus on applications that enhance or add productivity be it on an iPhone or Windows Phone. That said, when I run across a game that is what I refer to as a "time suck" then I have to tell everyone about it. Thus is the case with Firemint's Flight Control for iPhone. This game came recommended to me by Christopher Galuva over at Gear Diary and I'm glad he did - or maybe not? As the name suggest, Flight Control puts you in the seat of an Air Traffic Controller. The object is to land as many planes and helicopters as possible without crashing them into each other. The more you land the higher your ranking in the online score keeping built into the game. With easy controls and great graphics, Flight Control is well worth the .99 cents!

One of my favorite sayings is that I was born with a stuffy nose. And it is pretty much true. I am allergic to all kinds of fun things that float in the air, especially in the Spring and Fall. Knowing what is in the air, particularly ragweed, and how much is helpful for planning for the day or tomorrow. I may decide not to do my evening walk if I know the pollen count is sky high. To help with this, McNeil Consumer Healthcare's Zyrtec division has developed Allergycast, an application for the iPhone. This free application gives you the forecast of how high the pollen count will be for the day and will give you a forecast of what is expected for tomorrow. Not only that, it tells you what types of pollen are going to be dominant so you can plan according to your own sensitivities to those pollens. While it is clearly Adware - there is a Zyrtec tab in the application - it is a great way to know just how much your nose is going to bother you on a particular day.

Living in Texas has many advantages - no state income tax, low cost of living and an abundance of culture. The disadvantage though are the Spring and sometimes Fall thunderstorms. Being a native Texan I've grown up with them but that doesn't mean that I take them lightly. One of the first applications I looked to find in App Store was a weather radar application for my iPhone. When it comes to thunderstorms, knowing there they are and if they are coming your way is half of the battle. Exact Magic's Weather Radar application proved to be the answer for me. Not only does it provide you with the most current radar information available in your area, it can loop the last five radar images so you can get an idea of where storms are tracking. Couple this with some good user options and a lightweight install size - 1.2MB - you get a great all-around weather application for your iPhone.

Windows Mobile 6.5 officially launches

Today marks the official launch of Windows Mobile 6.5.  This updated version of Microsoft's mobile OS has been long awaited and given the HUGE amount of leaks around it, most everyone has seen a screenshot of it I'm sure.

It's a significant day as several new services and features launch with the new OS today as well.  First is Windows Marketplace, an online application store where you can try or buy applications directly from your phone.  Windows Marketplace is only available for Windows Phones running 6.5 but a version for older 6.0 and 6.1 phones is expected next month.

As I reported yesterday, MyPhone, the online backup solution for Windows Phones has been updated and is no longer a beta product.  MyPhone backs up many things on your phone including SMS, pictures and videos.  You have 200MB of storage space in this free service.
