Tor (The Onion Router) is a way for people to use the web without surrendering the identifying data that websites typically gather. As its name suggests, it sends data traffic through a series of routers arranged in layers like in an onion to make it difficult to find out who is browsing a site or is behind any particular web activity.

Tor (short for The Onion Router) is a system intended to enable online anonymity. Individuals use Tor to keep websites from tracking them and their family members, or to connect to news sites, instant messaging services, or the like when these are blocked by their local Internet providers. The Tor client is a free software and use of the Tor network is free of charge.

Tor client software directs internet traffic through a worldwide volunteer network of servers to conceal a user’s location or usage from anyone conducting network surveillance or traffic analysis.

Using Tor makes it more difficult to trace Internet activity, including visits to Web sites, online posts, instant messages and other communication forms, back to the user and is intended to protect users’ personal privacy, freedom, and ability to conduct confidential business by keeping their internet activities from being monitored.

Tor prevents anyone from learning your location or browsing habits.

Tor is for web browsers, instant messaging clients, remote logins, and more.

Tor is free and open source for Windows, Mac, Linux/Unix, and Android

Do you want to upgrade to a more recent version of Android but are frustrated that the device manufacturer hasn't provided an official Firmware upgrade? Here is how you can do it yourself!

Now a days with the increasing prevalence of Android-based devices I often get approached by friends wanting to know if they can upgrade their Android tablet or smartphone to a more recent version.

Android updates are typically slow to reach actual devices. For devices not under the Nexus brand, updates often arrive months from the time the given version is officially released.

This is caused partly due to the extensive variation in hardware of Android devices, to which each update must be specifically tailored, as the official Google source code only runs on their flagship Nexus devices.

Porting the Android operating system to specific hardware is a time- and resource-consuming process for device manufacturers, who prioritize their newest devices and often leave older ones behind. Hence, older smartphones are frequently not updated if the manufacturer decides it is not worth their time, regardless of whether the phone is capable of running the update.

Well the good news is that if you have a branded product in most cases someone somewhere with their technical know how would have created an unofficial custom upgrade for it. However, to go about upgrading your Android tablet or smartphone, you need to understand the process & risks BEFORE you start.

Please note, if not done correctly trying to upgrade the operating system has the potential to render your device unusable forever! Also, if you decide to do it within the warranty period of your device, this act will void the manufacturer warranty.

Find a Custom ROM

Android devices all have internal memory where the Android operating system resides. Unlike installation on PCs, the operating system isn’t installed through a wizard driven process of copying of files. It is done through a process known as Flashing, which like taking a photograph, involves imprinting a disk image of the operating system (known as a ROM or Firmware) onto the device memory.

So the first thing you need to do is to find a location from where to download a Custom ROM. A good place to start, besides running a search, is at the XDA Developer forum.

Rooting your Android device

Before flashing the Custom ROM onto your Android device, you need to first prepare your device. Keep a spare SD / microSD card (as applicable to your device) ready as it will be needed to load the ROM.

To flash a ROM onto the device’s internal memory you need to get the device’s system to accept the ROM with the right system permissions. This process of giving the highest level of access permission to your system to accept the Custom ROM is called Rooting, and has it’s own set of benefits.

Rooting is accomplished using a set of developer tools which need to be installed before you start the rooting process. You will also need to download and keep ready a Stock (clean) ROM on your PC.

Next modify your device’s setting to allow your device to be connected to your PC using USB debugging mode. You will then use the developer tools to wipe your current system off the device’s memory, and flash the clean ROM from your PC onto your USB-connected device so that root permissions can be set on your device.

How to Root your Android Tablet or Smartphone >>

Rooting procedures for most branded Android devices >>

Flashing the Custom ROM

Once you are done Rooting your device using a clean ROM, it is time to flash your Custom ROM Android update. The procedure is almost the same as that for flashing the Stock ROM except for a few minor differences. These differences will be clearly mentioned by the developer who is providing the Custom ROM.

Enjoy making phone calls with your Tablet PC wherever you are thanks to the “SIM Link” Dual SIM connector. Just pair your Android Tablet to the small “SIM Link” trough Bluetooth, slip it in your pocket and you’ll be able to send text messages and make phone calls with your Android Tablet. On top of that, the “SIM Link” features GPRS internet so you can update your Facebook status, read the news and browse the internet even when there is no Wi-Fi network available.

Insert up to two SIM cards in the “SIM Link” and easily switch between numbers, manage phone logs and more through the dedicated Android App. What’s more, the “SIM Link” also works with Phones and can turn your regular Android phone into a Tri-SIM phone (1 SIM Card in Phone + 2 SIM Cards in the “SIM Link”). This way, you won’t have to carry around two or more phones and all your messages, call logs and contacts will be centralized on your favorite phone.

There is an experimental, decentralized digital currency that enables instant payments to anyone, anywhere in the world, and is gaining acceptance across geographical boundaries. Learn more about this e-currency and how it functions.

In 2009, a pseudonymous developer named Satoshi Nakamoto introduced a new decentralized digital currency based on an open-source, peer-to-peer internet protocol. It was called Bitcoin.

Bitcoin does not operate like typical currencies. It has no central bank and it solely relies on an internet-based peer-to-peer (p2p) network. Being peer-to-peer, bitcoins can be exchanged by personal computer directly through a wallet file or a website without using an intermediate financial institution.

In trade, one bitcoin is subdivided into 100 million smaller units called satoshis, defined by eight decimal places.

The money supply is automated, limited, divided and scheduled, and given to servers or bitcoin miners that verify bitcoin transactions and add them to an archived transaction log every 10 minutes.

Free blogs such as Blogger or WordPress.com are great places to start your blog. It’s very user-friendly and you can get up and running quickly without much financial costs.

A self-hosted WordPress blog, on the other hand, offers some significant advantages for a blog owner. When your blog grows there comes a time when you should think about upgrading to a self-hosted WordPress blog (the one where you need to purchase your own domain & web hosting space). And if you’re looking to start a community around it, or even on it, you should seriously consider upgrading.

5 reasons why moving to self-hosted WordPress is smart:

1) Self-hosted WordPress blog is widely perceived as more professional

Everyone knows that Blogger and WordPress.com are free blogging services and clients often see a Blogger-based blog as less serious or committed. A self-hosted WordPress blog demonstrates a higher level of investment, which is often interpreted as commitment or legitimacy.

2) WordPress allows functionality that free blogs do not

With free blogs you are on a free web hosting service. As the service is free, there are a lot of constraints around what can / cannot be done on their servers. WordPress.com even prevents you from running third-party ads or sponsored posts as per their updated terms of service (TOS). On a self-hosted WordPress blog those constraints do not exist. You could run a loyalty program, set up a store-front, configure a landing page, create a social network, or run a forum all from your very own WordPress installation just like the Clinton Goveas blog.

3) On self-hosted WordPress YOU own your site

Bloggers sometimes have their blogs marked as SPAM by Google’s robots. Sometimes they get their blog back in a few hours. However, at times it can take upto four weeks! Whats more frustrating is that when Google flags your blog, there is nobody to contact and no easy recourse. You just have to fill out a form and wait for their reply. While blogging on a self-hosted WordPress blog this would not happen. You own your content on a server that you control. If there is a problem, you simply contact your web hosting company to address it.

4) You can optimize your blog for the search engines (SEO)

With a self-hosted blog you can actively manage the SEO value of posts, pages and images, and you can install sitemap plugins to help Google read your content. This can translate to higher search results and more traffic (visitors to your site).

5) The support from the WordPress community is fast and vibrant

Getting a question answered on either the Blogger or WordPress.com forums is very painful. Queries sometimes go unanswered for weeks/months. Many professional web designers use WordPress for their clients, so the solutions for almost all issues are usually available online. There is honestly no comparison!

Deciding on a free blog or a self-hosted WordPress blog?

Consider a few questions to help you reach a decision whether to move to from a free blog to a self-hosted WordPress blog:

Is your blog more than a hobby?

Does your blog generate income?

Do you aspire to have your blog earn money through a membership community, selling a product, or working with affiliates?

Are you hoping that your blog will grow larger and impact a broader audience?

Have you been feeling nervous that your free host might shut down your blog?

If you answered NO to these questions? Then it probably means that a free blog host is the right fit for your blog and you should stay with Blogger or WordPress.com. It might still be the best solution to meet your blogging needs.

If you answered YES to any of these questions, then moving from a free blog to a self-hosted WordPress blog should be a strong consideration.

Get to know Google's first ever laptop powered by Chrome OS with high-end features. Is it a good buy? Can it be serviced easily? Can it be upgraded? Get all the facts from here.

The Chromebook Pixel is a homegrown laptop by Google, unlike the previous Chromebook Series which were made by Samsung and Acer. To the lucidity of Windows 8 and the functionality & impressive screen that is the Retina Display on the MacBook, the Chromebook Pixel adds a comprehensive integration with the Cloud.

Under the hood the Chromebook Pixel is powered by impressive hardware. A dual-core 1.8GHz Intel Core i5 processor, 4GB of memory and integrated Intel HD 4000 graphics. There are two USB 2.0 ports, a Mini DisplayPort, an SD Card slot and a combo 3.5mm headphone-microphone jack.

There’s also dual-band 802.11 a/b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 3.0, add to that a 720p webcam coupled with dual microphones up top. Theres no built-in HDMI, though you can get a Mini DisplayPort-to-HDMI adapter.

Another feature that stands out is the new Gorilla Glass-covered multi-touch screen which is 12.85-inch and has a 2560 x 1700 (239 PPI) touchscreen panel. The screen also packs a massive 4.3 million pixels and has 400 nit brightness with 3:2 aspect ratio. According to the company, this is the highest resolution display they have put in to a laptop.

The Chromebook Pixel laptop runs Chrome OS, an operating system that’s based on the Chrome Web browser, and so the Pixel relies almost entirely on online storage services for your files and apps that run in the browser.

The laptop has 32GB and 64GB local solid-state storage options, but it also comes with a FREE 1 TB of storage through Google Drive for three years. Google Drive is an online file storage service that’s almost exactly like Dropbox and functions largely as the Pixel’s hard drive.

The laptop is available in TWO versions at different price-points: a Wi-Fi only version and a 4G/LTE version
