So, Tony Danza spent a year teaching in Philadelphia (for a television program) and now's he's written a book about the experience. I haven't read his book, nor have I watched the television series. But, I did read his USA Weekend Op-Ed, "What I learned teaching your kids."

I was, admittedly, a little skeptical of the entire process (teaching, filming, writing the book) . . . it was staged; it's going to end with former drop-outs jumping on their desks shouting something akin to, "O Captain! My Captain!" . . .

As a educator hardened by years of anti-teacher sentiment from the media, I didn't expect much. And, I still don't know what I'd think about the editing of the television series, Teach Tony Danza. (I don't think I'll be able to watch it here in Germany.) But, based on his editorial, I think I would be interested in reading the book.

"The bottom line: Kids need to want it. We can’t want them to get an education more than they want it for themselves. . . We all have a role to play in this, but when I was in teacher orientation, I constantly heard that teachers must “engage” the students. After a year of teaching, it strikes me that what we really need are students to engage in their own education."

Here's my 2 cents . . .

I often hear various members of the educational community lament that 'kids just aren't like the used to be . . . " Of course, implying that it "the kids" were the only factor that had changed in the equation of kids + education = success. A lot has changed in this equation. There are practically innumerable contributing factors, including how we define "success" and what we consider to be "education." We must not forget that "education" is really the sum of experiences -- input and interaction -- from parents, siblings, friends, media, teachers, schools, etc. When any of those is a big fat zero . . . well, that significantly diminishes the overall potential for success. And, if the motivation from "the kids" is zero . . . you get the picture.

This is a complicated issue and I feel like schools have been so maligned by all, that it is difficult for "the kids" to see value in and to respect them. To pick up on one of Tony's major points, all adults in a child's life need to understand that they, too, are teachers. We all teach by our example. We teach "the kids" what's important by how we act, what type of media we consume, where were place value, how we respond to criticism and challenge, how we react to praise, and how/if we engage in their formal education.

Kindle Fire and 2-Step Email Verification

There are three things Kindle Fire users need to do to enable Gmail with 2-step verification on the Kindle Fire Mail App.

1. Enable IMAP in your Gmail settings. (Do this in your web browser.) http://support.google.com/mail/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=77695

2. Create an application-specific password in the security settings of your Google account (do this in your web browser) and use that new password instead of the "original" Google password when logging into the Mail App (in Mail settings) on the Kindle Fire. Don't forget to input this new password in both the "Incoming Server" and "Outgoing Server."

I've always thought that the Ausbildung/Praktikum model in Germany is excellent. It affords people exposure to the practical skills that accompany the theory they learn in the classroom. There is so much opportunity in Germany for people to gain the skills and experience to make them more attractive as employees. And, it's not only the technical, job-specific skills, it's also maturity and professionalism. I'm glad to see that Spain is looking into this model. I wish the USA were more open to this.

I do sincerely apologize that I have been so tardy in explaining my lack of posts on Cliotech. Things are finally settling down and I can take the time to provide an explanation of how my life has changed drastically in the past month.

I am writing this from Munich, Germany. My husband and I moved to Germany last week after selling our house and most of our possessions. We are going to be teaching in Bad Tölz, Germany, starting in September 2011. Our goal is to fully assimilate and, to that end, are in Germany 9 months early to take language classes in Munich.

During this time, I will be taking a hiatus from blogging here at Cliotech. Of course, I will not be entirely absent, but the posts will be less frequent. Once the school year starts I'll be back to blogging about educational issues and edtech full time.

USADA True Sport Awards Entries Now Open

The United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA), in partnership with Discovery Education, announce the kick-off of the second year of The USADA True Sport Awards , promoting honesty, respect, teamwork, and healthy choices.

The USADA True Sport Awards program encourages teachers, coaches, school administrators, and other youth program leaders to motivate young people to lead safe and healthy lifestyles, free from performance-enhancing drugs, using the life lessons learned through sport as its platform. The program provides a powerful opportunity for educators and community leaders to win local program funding, support and prizes for their efforts to influence positive beliefs and behaviors in their communities. In year one of the program, which was awarded the 2010 Mom’s Choice Award® for online family-friendly resources, more than 600 educators across the country participated, and 50 winners in 19 states were awarded prizes.

In addition to The USADA True Sport Awards, USADA and Discovery Education are partnering again to offer free curricula for both middle school and high school students that help educators and community leaders impart the critical life lessons that contribute to the development of ethical and healthy individuals. These curricula are tied to national education standards, are implemented easily into classroom or other youth group educational settings, offer self-assessment tools, teachers’ guides and student activity materials, and are available at http://usadatruesport.discoveryeducation.com/ and at www.usada.org.

Keep Your STAR Status for 2010-2011: New Ways to Demonstrate Activity

Are you a DEN STAR? If so, it just became even easier to keep shining!

As the new school year approaches, now is the time to make sure your STAR status is intact. We've added a couple other options to help you demonstrate how you actively contribute to the community.

There are lots of ways to stay active:

• Report at least two events from this past school year

• Report one event and upload a resource to the Educator Resources library on the DEN site

• Report one event and tell us one other way you have shared the power of Discovery with your peers (e.g., newsletter, podcast, etc.)

Diigo 5.0 is LIVE!

I spent several hours today exploring all the tremendous new features in Diigo V5. All I have to say is, "WOW!!!" Actually, let me amend that by also admitting that the new iPad web highlighter and the offline reader for the iPhone / iPod Touch make me absolutely salivate to get into an Apple store.

So, what’s new with Diigo 5.0?

Diigo 5.0 enables the collection and annotation of screenshots and pictures: check out the new Diigo toolbars’ Capture feature & cool new Chrome extension >> “Awesome Screenshot: Capture & Annotate by Diigo

Diigo 5.0 also enables “Notes”, which is best suited for quick personal memos (via website & new Android app)

A new Android phone application called “Diigo Power Note” is being released as a part of Diigo 5.0, which enables Android phone users to collect, organize, sync and access a variety of information such as bookmarks, notes, and pictures. So you can jot down your ideas and thoughts, and take pictures of things you like to be reminded to buy or research later, or business cards handed to you. With Diigo Power Note, you literally have a photographic memory!

Web Highlighter for iPad Safari is being released as part of Diigo 5.0, which enables you to highlight and annotate webpages, using fingers, in iPad Safari, just as you can with ebooks on iBooks or Kindle.

As with each previous major release, Diigo 5.0 has substantially revamped the user interface for improved look & feel and usability.

Converting QuickTime Files for iMovie '09

Is anyone else frustrated with QuickTime (.mov) files that won't import into iMovie '09? Here's the scoop. iMovie ‘09 does not support the Codec: Sorenson Video 3, MPEG Layer 3 which is how many .mov files have been compressed. The codecs it does support are H.264, MPEG Layer 4 and MPEG Layer 2. They have no plans to add the Sorenson compression.

Here is a free work-around that processes the .mov files through iTunes to compress it as an iPod, iPhone, iPad, or Apple TV file that will import into iMovie '09.

Note: If you are running QuickTime Pro you can "save as" instead of running the video through iTunes.

Discovery Education streaming just added Disaster in the Gulf: A Race Against Time.

Take a behind-the-scenes look at the engineering efforts to stop the 2010 Deep Water Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, the worst environmental catastrophe in U.S. history. The program follows an elite team of chemists and engineers from the federal government and private companies as they attempt to plug the leak inside the oil rig 5,000 feet below the water's surface. On the Louisiana coast, biologists and environmentalists struggle to keep the oil from damaging the area's fragile ecosystems. NOTE: Please preview this program before showing it to students.

Classroom Resources for the Haiti Earthquake

It's considered one of the worst natural disasters to hit the Western Hemisphere, but many students still don't have a comprehensive understanding of what happened in Haiti earlier this year. The USGS has some great resources and Google has created some excellent data layers viewable in Google Maps and Google Earth. Google News Timeline is a great way to visualize how the media responded to catastrophe. And, don't forget that you can view your traditional Google Search results in Wonder Wheel and Timeline view to create a more visually striking data set.

The Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation (HWCF) announced today an unprecedented, innovative alliance with leading media companies Discovery Education and Meredith Corporation to help parents, educators, and children address the problem of childhood obesity.

The Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation will promote ways to help people achieve a healthy weight through energy balance – calories in and calories out.
