So, &lt;a href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001103/"&gt;Tony Danza&lt;/a&gt; spent a year teaching in Philadelphia (for a &lt;a href="http://www.aetv.com/teach-tony-danza/"&gt;television program)&lt;/a&gt; and now's he's written a &lt;a href="http://www.amazon.com/Like-Apologize-Every-Teacher-Ever/dp/0307887863/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&amp;amp;ie=UTF8&amp;amp;qid=1346318525&amp;amp;sr=1-1"&gt;book&lt;/a&gt; about the experience. &amp;nbsp;I haven't read his book, nor have I watched the television series. &amp;nbsp;But, I did read his &lt;a href="http://www.usaweekend.com/article/20120824/HOME01/308240011"&gt;USA Weekend Op-Ed&lt;/a&gt;, "What I learned teaching your kids." &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
I was, admittedly, a little&amp;nbsp;skeptical of the entire process (teaching, filming, writing the book) . . . it was staged; it's going to end with former drop-outs jumping on their desks shouting something akin to, "&lt;a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/O_Captain%21_My_Captain%21" rel="wikipedia nofollow" target="_blank" title="O Captain! My Captain!"&gt;O Captain! &amp;nbsp;My Captain!&lt;/a&gt;"&amp;nbsp;. . .&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
As a educator hardened by years of anti-teacher sentiment from the media, I didn't expect much. &amp;nbsp;And, I still don't know what I'd think about the editing of the television series, &lt;a href="http://www.aetv.com/teach-tony-danza/"&gt;Teach Tony Danza&lt;/a&gt;. &amp;nbsp;(I don't think I'll be able to watch it here in Germany.) &amp;nbsp;But, based on his editorial, I think I would be interested in reading the book.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;blockquote&gt;
"The bottom line: Kids need to want it. We can’t want them to get an education more than they want it for themselves. . . We all have a role to play in this, but when I was in teacher orientation, I constantly heard that teachers must “engage” the students. After a year of teaching, it strikes me that what we really need are students to engage in their own education."&lt;/blockquote&gt;
Here's my &lt;i&gt;2 cents&lt;/i&gt; . . .&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
I often hear various members of the educational community lament that 'kids just aren't like the used to be . . . " Of course, implying that it "the kids" were the only factor that had changed in the equation of &lt;i&gt;kids&lt;/i&gt; + &lt;i&gt;education&lt;/i&gt; = &lt;i&gt;success&lt;/i&gt;.  A lot has changed in this equation.  There are practically innumerable contributing factors, including how we define "success" and what we consider to be "education."  We must not forget that "education" is really the sum of experiences -- input and interaction -- from parents, siblings, friends, media, teachers, schools, etc.  When any of those is a big fat zero . . . well, that significantly diminishes the overall potential for success. &amp;nbsp;And, if the motivation from "the kids" is zero . . . you get the picture.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
This is a complicated issue and I feel like schools have been so maligned by all, that it is difficult for "the kids" to see value in and to respect them.  To pick up on one of Tony's major points, all adults in a child's life need to understand that they, too, are teachers.  We all teach by our example.  We teach "the kids" what's important by how we act, what type of media we consume, where were place value, how we respond to criticism and challenge, how we react to praise, and how/if we engage in their formal education. &lt;br /&gt;

&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;I am writing this from Munich, Germany. &amp;nbsp;My husband and I moved to Germany last week after selling our house and most of our possessions. &amp;nbsp;We are going to be teaching in Bad Tölz, Germany, starting in September 2011. &amp;nbsp;Our goal is to fully assimilate and, to that end, are in Germany 9 months early to take language classes in Munich. &amp;nbsp;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;During this time, I will be taking a hiatus from blogging here at Cliotech. &amp;nbsp;Of course, I will not be entirely absent, but the posts will be less frequent. &amp;nbsp;Once the school year starts I'll be back to blogging about educational issues and edtech full time. &amp;nbsp;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;

The program provides a powerful opportunity for educators and community leaders to win local program funding, support and prizes for their efforts to influence positive beliefs and behaviors in their communities.  In year one of the program, which was awarded the 2010 Mom’s Choice Award® for online family-friendly resources, more than 600 educators across the country participated, and 50 winners in 19 states were awarded prizes.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In addition to The USADA True Sport Awards,   USADA and Discovery Education are partnering again to offer free curricula for both middle school and high school students that help educators and community leaders impart the critical life lessons that contribute to the development of ethical and healthy individuals.
