-- General Electric Co., the biggest maker of wind turbines in the U.S., wants a trade agency to block Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. from importing rival energy equipment to the U.S.

Turbines made by Mitsubishi, Japan’s largest heavy- machinery maker, infringe three patents, GE lawyer Scott Breedlove told U.S. International Trade Commission Judge Carl Charneski today.

The technology being used brought “wind energy into the mainstream,” Breedlove said in opening arguments to the judge. Mitsubishi is using the inventions “in a pretty straightforward fashion.”

Several weeks ago, an AES worker suffered injuries in an accident atop a wind turbine.

Kern County Fire Department carried out a rescue operation that involved lowering him down the outside of a turbine.

An eight-page Deficiency Letter from DEP on March 17 cites unacceptable plans for restoration of disrupted streams, an undisclosed timber disturbance, improper labeling and scaling of the construction site drawing, inadequate documentation of approval by the Federal Aviation Administration, etc.

Gamesa hasn’t satisfactorily met its legal obligation to consult with the Pennsylvania Natural Diversity Inventory. This is especially egregious because of the presence of state and federally endangered Indiana bats at the site.

Unaddressed discrepancies exist between Gamesa’s paid, single-season survey of migratory golden eagles and data gathered independently over several years at the Allegheny Front Hawk Watch.

A wind turbine whose blades are spinning out of control has triggered the closure of Hwy. 58 between Hwy. 14 and Tehachapi Willow Springs Road for what may be several days.

The California Highway Patrol closed the road at 3 p.m. Sunday as a safety measure in case the mechanism self-destructs in the high winds and the 1,000-pound blades – or chunks of them – are thrown into the roadway.

When they were alerted of the situation, the CHP was told the chunks could fly as far as a mile.

The turbine is located 1,400 feet – about a quarter of a mile – from the intersection of Hwy. 58 and Sand Canyon Road.

The cowling covering the machinery at the top of the derrick was thrown off by the motion of the unchecked blades, the CHP said.

Section of falling tower causes death

A falling section of a lattice tower used for wind measurements caused the death of a contract worker on Sunday at a Kenedy County wind farm, his employer said Tuesday.

Babcock and Brown officials would not give details about the accident.

Turbines making a big difference to land values in Gippsland

John Jess has been valuing properties in Gippsland, Vic, since 1982 and says wind turbines are having a significant impact on values for both farmland and residential property.

Having conducted valuations for a panel hearing on proposed wind farms, Mr Jess said farming properties appear to drop 10-15 pc near turbines.

There is stronger evidence to suggest rural-residential values drop by 30-40pc near win turbines.

Union Fenosa SA and Iberdrola SA are among companies that submitted bids for Babcock's European wind assets, three people with knowledge of the plan said in June. Babcock in December 2005 bought the Enersis project for 490 million euros ($626 million) and then sold half to affiliate Babcock & Brown Wind Partners.

Babcock said June 16 it was ``confident'' the wind assets would be sold this year -- an assumption Heagerty said may prove too optimistic.

``The sale of Babcock's wind assets is likely to be postponed further given the difficulties for the acquirers in obtaining financing,'' he said.

Falling energy prices have forced billionaire oilman and investor T. Boone Pickens to trim spending on his renewable energy campaign and put his West Texas wind farm project on hold.

When Pickens launched his plan this summer to boost the use of wind and natural gas to ease American dependence on foreign oil, gasoline prices were at a record $4.11 a gallon and oil prices were at $147 a barrel.

A group of concerned citizens has banded together in Hammond to try to get a moratorium on wind development, even though the town has passed an amendment to its zoning law that controls wind farms.

"At this point we're just talking to citizens who've been to board meetings," said William A. Rogers, spokesman for the Concerned Citizens of Hammond. "We just want openness from the town and citizens' input."

AG Establishes Wind Industry Ethics Code

A new Wind Industry Ethics Code that establishes guidelines to facilitate the development of alternative energy in New York while assuring the public the wind power industry is acting properly and within the law has been announced by the state Attorney General’s office.

The Code calls for new oversight through a multi-agency task force and establishes unprecedented transparency that will deter any improper relationships between wind development companies and local government officials.

Friends of Lincoln Lakes also questions whether the town should do business with First Wind, which is currently being investigated by the New York State Attorney General’s Office for allegations of improper dealings with public officials and anti-competitive practices. A lawsuit against First Wind has also been filed in New York regarding the company’s project in Prattsburgh, N.Y., according to The Quoddy Tides. Wind turbine blade crashes down in Illinois field

An India-based company that made a wind turbine that broke and dropped a 6.5-ton blade into an Illinois corn field this week says it is fixing blades on more than 400 turbines -- most of them in the U.S. -- that could have similar problems.

Suzlon Energy Ltd. says its fiberglass-coated turbine blades can develop cracks because of a design flaw, something the company says it can fix by adding more fiberglass.
